In this work, we revisit a toy model proposed by Camanho {\it et.al.} [JHEP 10 (2015) 179] and extensively study the possible existence of gravitational phase transition from AdS to dS geometries by adding the Maxwell field as an impurity substitution. We show that the phase transitions proceed via the bubble nucleation of spherical thin-shells described by different branches of the solution which host a black hole in the interior. In order to demonstrate the existence of the phase transition, we examine how the free energy and temperature depend on the higher-order gravity coupling $(λ)$ indicating the possibility of thermalon mediated phase transition. We observe that the phase transitions of the charged case is possible in which the required (maximum) temperature is lower than that of the neutral case. Interestingly, we also discover that the critical temperature and the coupling $λ$ of the phase transitions are modified when having the charge. In addition, our results agree with the claim that the generalized gravitational phase transition is a generic behavior of the higher-order gravity theories even the matter field is added.
We consider spherically symmetric and static charged black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell gravities in general $D\ge 5$ dimensions and study their photon spheres and black hole shadows. We show that they all satisfy the sequence of inequalities recently proposed relating a black hole's horizon, photon sphere, shadow and its mass.
We study charged black hole solutions in 4-dimensional (4D) Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory to the linearized perturbation level. We first compute the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. We then demonstrate how bulk causal structure analysis imposes a upper bound on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant in the AdS space. Causality constrains the value of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α_{GB}$ to be bounded by $α_{GB}\leq 0$ as $D\rightarrow 4$.
In this paper we consider the holographic DC and Hall conductivity in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with momentum dissipation. We analytically derived the DC conductivity and Hall conductivity from the black horizon data, and found that the conductivities are independent on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also used the entropy function formalism to get the conductivities in terms of the charge of the black hole, even without knowing the explicit black hole solutions.
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the hydrodynamics with conserved current from the dual Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. After constructing the perturbative solution to the first order based on the boosted black brane solution in the bulk Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we extract the stress tensor and conserved current of the dual conformal fluid on its boundary, and also find the effect of Gauss-Bonnet term on the dual conformal fluid. Our results show that the Gauss-Bonnet term can affect the parameters such as the shear viscosity $η$, entropy density $s$, thermal conductivity $κ$ and …
We study five dimensional thin-shell wormholes in Einstein-Maxwell theory with a Gauss-Bonnet term. The linearized stability under radial perturbations and the amount of exotic matter are analyzed as a function of the parameters of the model. We find that the inclusion of the quadratic correction substantially widens the range of possible stable configurations, and besides it allows for a reduction of the exotic matter required to construct the wormholes.
In this paper, we present a class of rotating solutions in Gauss--Bonnet gravity in the presence of cosmological constant and conformally invariant Maxwell field and study the effects of the nonlinearity of the Maxwell source on the properties of the spacetimes. These solutions may be interpret as black brane solutions with inner and outer event horizons provide that the mass parameter $m$ is greater than an extremal value $m_{ext}$, an extreme black brane if $m=m_{ext}$ and a naked singularity otherwise. We investigate the conserved and thermodynamics quantities for asymptotically flat and as…
We obtain new exact solutions in Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity of every odd dimension higher than three. These new spacetimes are stationary but non-static, coupled with the Maxwell field, and asymptotic AdS at least locally. In order to investigate such new solutions, we adopt the characteristic ansatz for the metric form. It is presented that the local expression of our metric possesses some interesting properties, in which the most peculiar one is what is called Sasakian structure. Somewhat intricate relationship is unveiled between our solution and the already-known rotating solution which…
The dual fluid description for a general cutoff surface at radius r=r_c outside the horizon in the charged AdS black brane bulk space-time is investigated, first in the Einstein-Maxwell theory. Under the non-relativistic long-wavelength expansion with parameter ε, the coupled Einstein-Maxwell equations are solved up to O(ε^2). The incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with external force density is obtained as the constraint equation at the cutoff surface. For non-extremal black brane, the viscosity of the dual fluid is determined by the regularity of the metric fluctuation at the horizon, who…
We study a solution of the Einstein-Gauus-Bonnet theory in 5 dimensions coupled to a Maxwell field, whose euclidean continuation gives rise to an instanton describing black hole pair production. We also discuss the dual theory with a 3-form field coupled to gravity.
Following the previous work 1103.3773, we give a more general and systematic discussion on the Chern-Simons effect in the 5-dimensional Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. After constructing the first order perturbative black brane solution, we extract the stress tensor and charge current of dual fluid. From these results, we find out the dependence of some transport coefficients on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$ and Chern-Simons coupling $κ_{cs}$. We also show that the new anomalous term can provide an additional contribution to the anomalous chiral magnetic conductivity.
The influence of the Maxwell field on a static, asymptotically flat and spherically-symmetric Gauss-Bonnet black hole is considered. Numerical computations suggest that if the charge increases beyond a critical value, the inner determinant singularity is replaced by an inner singular horizon.
We apply the membrane paradigm and the holographic Wilsonian approach to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory. The transport coefficients for a quark-gluon plasma living on the cutoff surface are derived in a spacetime of charged black brane. Because of the mixing of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling and the Maxwell fields, the vector modes/shear modes of the metric and Maxwell fluctuations turn out to be very difficult to decouple. We firstly evaluate the AC conductivity at a finite cutoff surface by solving the equation of motion numerically, then manage to derive the radial flow of DC conductiv…
In this work, we study the possible existence of gravitational phase transition from AdS to dS asymptotic geometries in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity by adding the Maxwell one-form field ($A_μ$) and the Kalb-Ramond two-form field ($B_{μν}$) as impurity substitutions. The phase transitions proceed via the bubble nucleation of spherical thin-shells described by different branches of the solutions which host a dS black hole in the interior and asymptotic thermal AdS state in the exterior. We analyze the phase diagrams of the free energy and temperature to demonstrate the existence of the phase tr…
In this paper, we extend the work on the AdS/QCD model to quadratic gravity to gain insight into the influence of gravity. We obtain an anisotropic black brane solution to a $5D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-two Maxwell-dilaton system. The background is specified by an arbitrary exponent, a dilaton field, a time component of the first Maxwell field, and a magnetic component of the second Maxwell field. The system in three cases has been investigated and in each case the effect of the parameter of theory, the anisotropic parameter has been considered. The blackening function supports the thermodynamic…
Recently in (Phys. Rev. D 76, 087502 (2007) and Phys. Rev. D 77, 089903(E) (2008)) a thin-shell wormhole has been introduced in 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet (EMGB) gravity which was supported by normal matter. We wish to consider this solution and investigate its stability. Our analysis shows that for the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) parameter $α<0,$ stability regions form for a narrow band of finely-tuned mass and charge. For the case $α>0$, we iterate once more that no stable, normal matter thin-shell wormhole exists.
Recently, it is found that the strong cosmic censorship (SCC) is violated in RNdS black hole by a minimal coupled neutral massless scalar field at the linear perturbation level. For the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory which is famous for the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon, there exists the scalar field coupled with the Gauss-Bonnet term. Whether the SCC of the RNdS black hole can be repaired by the non-minimal coupled scalar field perturbation at the linear level becomes an interesting question. In this paper, we firstly investigate the extendibility of the metric beyond the …
We analytically and numerically investigate the properties of s-wave holographic superconductors by considering the effects of scalar and gauge fields on the background geometry in five dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We assume the gauge field to be in the form of the Power-Maxwell nonlinear electrodynamics. We employ the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem for analytical calculation of the critical temperature and the shooting method for the numerical investigation. Our numerical and analytical results indicate that higher curvature corrections affect condensation of the holographic…
We consider the Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of a new class of nonlinear electromagnetic field, namely, power Maxwell invariant. By use of a suitable transformation, we obtain a class of real rotating solutions with $k$ rotation parameters and investigate some properties of the solutions such as existence of singularity(ies) and asymptotic behavior of them. Also, we calculate the finite action, thermodynamic and conserved quantities of the solutions and using the the Smarr-type formula to check the first law of thermodynamics.
Motivated by recent progresses in the field of massive gravity, the paper at hand investigates the thermodynamical structure of black holes with three specific generalizations: i) Gauss-Bonnet gravity which is motivated from string theory ii) PMI nonlinear electromagnetic field which is motivated from perspective of the QED correction iii) massive gravity which is motivated by obtaining the modification of standard general relativity. The exact solutions of this setup are extracted which are interpreted as black holes. In addition, thermodynamical quantities of the solutions are calculated and…
The local and global thermal phase structure for asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes charged under an abelian gauge group, with both Gauss-Bonnet and quartic field strength corrections, is mapped out for all parameter space. We work in the grand canonical ensemble where the external electric potential is held fixed. The analysis is performed in an arbitrary number of dimensions, for all three possible horizon topologies - spherical, flat or hyperbolic. For spherical horizons, new metastable configurations are exhibited both for the pure Gauss-Bonnet theory as well as the pure higher deri…
In this paper, we are considering two first order corrections to both gravity and gauge sides of the Einstein-Maxwell gravity: Gauss-Bonnet gravity and quadratic Maxwell invariant as corrections. We obtain horizonless magnetic solutions by implying a metric which representing a topological defect. We analyze the geometric properties of the solutions and investigate the effects of both corrections, and find that these solutions may be interpreted as the magnetic branes. We study the singularity condition and find a nonsingular spacetime with a conical geometry. We also investigate the effects o…
Recently, the non-trivial solutions for 4-dimensional black holes of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity had been discovered. In this paper, considering a charged particle entering into a 4-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell black hole, we calculate the black hole thermodynamic properties by using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In the normal phase space, the cosmological constant and Gauss-Bonnet parameter are fixed, the black hole satisfies the first and second laws of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) is valid. On the other hand, in the case of extended phase space, the …
We consider Maxwell and Yang-Mills (YM) fields together, interacting through gravity both in Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theories. For this purpose we choose two different sets of Maxwell and metric ansaetze. In our first ansatz, asymptotically for $r\to 0$ (and $N>4$) the Maxwell field dominants over the YM field. In the other asymptotic region, $r\to \infty $, however, the YM field becomes dominant. For N=3 and N=4, where the GB term is absent, we recover the well-known Ba\U{f1}ados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) and Reissner-Nordstr\U{f6}m (RN) metrics, respectively. The second ansatz correspo…
We study holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We consider two particular backgrounds: a $d$-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black hole and a Gauss-Bonnet-AdS soliton. We discuss in detail the effects that the mass of the scalar field, the Gauss-Bonnet coupling and the dimensionality of the AdS space have on the condensation formation and conductivity. We also study the ratio $ω_g/T_c $ for various masses of the scalar field and Gauss-Bonnet couplings.
We study the stability of thin-shell wormholes in Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The equation of state of the thin shell wormhole is considered first to obey a generalized Chaplygin gas and then we generalize it to an arbitrary state function which covers all known cases studied so far. In particular we study the modified Chaplygin gas and give an assessment for a general parotropic fluid. Our study is in d-dimensions and with numerical analysis in d=5 we show the effect of the GB parameter in the stability of thin-shell wormholes against the radial perturbations.
We propose a boundary term to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet action for gravity, which is constructed as the dimensional continuation of the Chern-Weil theorem, and such that the extremization of the full action yields the equations of motion when Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed. When translated into tensorial language, this boundary term is the generalization to this theory of the Katz boundary term and vector for general relativity. The construction allows to deal with a general background and includes the Gibbons-Hawking-Myers boundary term as a special case, when the background is tak…
We present a novel, exact, traversable wormhole (T-WH) solution for $(3+1)$-dimensional Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory (EsGB) coupled to a power-Maxwell nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED). The solution is characterized by two parameters, $\mathcal{Q}\!_{\rm e}$ and $\mathcal{Q}\!_{_{ \mathcal{S} }}$, associated respectively with the electromagnetic field and the scalar field. We show that for $\mathcal{Q}^2_{\rm e} - \mathcal{Q}\!_{_{ \mathcal{S} }}>0$ the solution can be interpreted as a traversable wormhole. In the general case, with non-vanishing electromagnetic field, the scalar-Gauss-B…
We derive the Lichnerowicz equation in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term. Using the modified Lichnerowicz equation we study the metric perturbations of Gauss-Bonnet black strings in Codimension-2 Braneworlds.
We study the phase space of the spherically symmetric solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet system nonminimally coupled to a scalar field and prove the existence of solutions with unusual asymptotics in addition to asymptotically flat ones. We also find new dyonic solutions of dilatonic Einstein-Maxwell theory.
To ensure the existence of a well defined linearized gravitational wave equation, we show that the spacetimes in the so-called "Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimension" have to be locally conformally flat.
We discuss a new extended gravity model in ordinary $D=4$ spacetime dimensions, where an additional term in the action involving Gauss-Bonnet topological density is included without the need to couple it to matter fields unlike the case of ordinary D=4 Gauss-Bonnet gravity models. Avoiding the Gauss-Bonnet density becoming a total derivative is achieved by employing the formalism of metric-independent non-Riemannian spacetime volume-forms. The non-Riemannian volume element triggers dynamically the Gauss-Bonnet scalar to become an arbitrary integration constant on-shell. We describe in some det…
Using Noether's identities, we define a superpotential with respect to a background for the Einstein Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. As an example, we show that its associated conserved charge yields the mass-energy of a D-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet black hole in an anti-de Sitter spacetime.
We study the bending of light in the space-time of black holes in four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity, recently proposed by Glavan and Lin \cite{Glavan}. Using Rindler-Ishak method, the effect of Gauss-Bonnet coupling on the bending angle is studied. We show that a positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling gives a negative contribution to the Schwarzschild-de Sitter deflection angle, as one would expect.
In this paper we have analytically investigated holographic superconductors in four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity background. Recently the novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity has been formulated by rescaling the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α\rightarrow \fracα{d-4}$ and taking the limit $d\rightarrow 4$, and this predicts several interesting new features. To know the effect of the curvature correction on the $(2+1)$-dimensional superconductors, we have consider the $3+1$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Using the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue approach, th…
Accelerating vacua with maximally symmetric, but not necessarily spherical, sections for Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravities in generic dimensions are obtained. The acceleration parameter has the effect of shifting the cosmological constants in Einstein gravity, whereas in Gauss-Bonnet gravity the effective cosmological constants remain the same in the presence of acceleration as in the case without acceleration.
The topological classification of critical points of black holes in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity coupled to Born-Infeld theory is investigated. Considered independently, Born-infeld corrections to the Einstein action alter the topological charge of critical points of the charged AdS black hole system, whereas the Gauss-Bonnet corrections do not. For the combined system though, the total topological charge of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory is unaltered in the presence of Born-Infeld coupling.
We discuss the formation of scalar hair on Gauss-Bonnet solitons and black holes in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. We present new results on the static case and point out further details. We find that the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term has an influence on the pattern of soliton solutions for small enough values of the electric charge. We also discuss rotating Gauss-Bonnet black holes with and without scalar hair.
We propose a new model of $D=4$ Gauss-Bonnet gravity. To avoid the usual property of the integral over the standard $D=4$ Gauss-Bonnet scalar becoming a total derivative term, we employ the formalism of metric-independent non-Riemannian spacetime volume elements which makes the D=4 Gauss-Bonnet action term non-trivial without the need to couple it to matter fields unlike the case of ordinary D=4 Gauss-Bonnet gravity models. The non-Riemannian volume element dynamically triggers the Gauss-Bonnet scalar to be an arbitrary integration constant M on-shell, which in turn has several interesting cos…
We construct generalizations of the D=5 Kerr black string by including higher curvature corrections to the gravity action in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet density. These uniform black strings satisfy a generalised Smarr relation and share the basic properties of the Einstein gravity solutions. However, they exist only up to a maximal value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, which depends on the solutions' mass and angular momentum.
We study the Wilson line response in the holographic superconducting phase transitions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the black brane background case, the Little-Parks periodicity is independent of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter, while in the AdS soliton case, there is no evidence for the Little-Parks periodicity. We further study the impact of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the holographic phase transitions quantitatively. The results show that such quantum corrections can effectively affect the occurrence of the phase transitions and the response to the Wilson line.
The Kerr-type solutions of the five-dimensional Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations look pretty similar when written in Kerr-Schild form. However the Myers-Perry spacetime is circular whereas the rotating solution of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory is not. We explore some consequences of this difference in particular regarding the (non) existence of Boyer-Lindquist-type coordinates and the extension of the manifold.
We compute the mass and angular momenta of rotating anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity using a superpotential derived from standard Noether identities. The calculation relies on the fact that the Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet vacuum equations are the same when linearized on maximally symmetric backgrounds and uses the recently discovered D-dimensional Kerr-anti-de Sitter solutions to Einstein's equations.
We treat spherically symmetric black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity by imposing boundary conditions on fluctuating metric on the horizon. Obtained effective two-dimensional theory admits Virasoro algebra near the horizon. This enables, with the help of Cardy formula, evaluation of the number of states. Obtained results coincide with the known macroscopic expression for the entropy of black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity.
We employ the variational method for the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem to analytically study the phase transition between the holographic insulator and superconductor in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity. By investigating the s-wave and p-wave holographic insulator/superconductor models, we find that this analytic method is more effective to obtain the analytic results on the condensation and the critical phenomena in the AdS soliton background in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Our analytic result can be used to back up the numerical computations in the AdS soliton with Gauss-Bonnet correction.
We present \emph{area (or entropy) functional relation} for multi-horizons five dimensional (5D) Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet-AdS Black Hole. It has been observed by exact and explicit calculation that some complicated function of two or three horizons area is \emph{mass-independent} whereas the entropy product relation is \emph{not} mass-independent. We also study the local thermodynamic stability of this black hole. The phase transition occurs at certain condition. \emph{Smarr mass formula} and \emph{first law} of thermodynamics have been derived. This \emph{mass-independent} relation sugge…
We investigate the presence of a black hole black string phase transition in Einstein Gauss Bonnet (EGB) gravity in the large dimension limit. The merger point is the static spacetime connecting the black string phase with the black hole phase. We consider several ranges of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter. We find that there is a range when the Gauss-Bonnet corrections are subordinate to the Einstein gravity terms in the large dimension limit, and yet the merger point geometry does not approach a black hole away from the neck. We cannot rule out a topology changing phase transition as argued by Kol…
In this paper, we investigate the photon sphere, shadow radius and quasinormal modes of a four-dimensional charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole. The perturbation of a massless scalar field in the black hole's background is adopted. The quasinormal modes are gotten by the $6th$ order WKB approximation approach and shadow radius, respectively. When the value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant increase, the values of the real parts of the quasinormal modes increase and those of the imaginary parts decrease. The coincidence degrees of quasinormal modes derived by the two approaches increase…
We study the greybody factors of the scalar fields in spherically symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes in higher dimensions. We derive the greybody factors analytically for both minimally and non-minimally coupled scalar fields. Moreover, we discuss the dependence of the greybody factor on various parameters including the angular momentum number, the non-minimally coupling constant, the spacetime dimension, the cosmological constant and the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient in detail. We find that the non-minimal coupling may suppress the Hawking radiation, while the Gauss-Bonnet coupl…
It is known that Gauss-Bonnet terms in higher dimensional gravity can produce an effective cosmological constant. We add extra examples to this picture by presenting explicitly two branches of accelerating vacuum solutions to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravities with a bare cosmological constant in 5 and 6 dimensions. Both branches of solutions are of constant curvature and the effective cosmological constants are independent of the acceleration parameter. One branch (the "-" branch) of the solutions is well defined in the limit when the Gauss-Bonnet parameter approaches zero, in which case the…
We study general models for holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find that different values of Gauss-Bonnet correction term and model parameters can determine the order of phase transitions and critical exponents of second-order phase transitions. Moreover we find that the size and strength of the conductivity coherence peak can be controlled. The ratios $ω_g/Tc$ for various model parameters have also been examined.
We make an extensive study of evolution of gravitational perturbations of D-dimensional black holes in Gauss-Bonnet theory. There is an instability at higher multi-poles $\ell$ and large Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$ for $D= 5, 6$, which is stabilized at higher $D$. Although small negative gap of the effective potential for scalar type of gravitational perturbations, exists for higher $D$ and whatever $α$, it does not lead to any instability.
We summarize our proof that the "Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity in Four-Dimensional Spacetime" introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020) does not have consistent field equations, as such the theory does not exist. The proof is given in both the metric and the first order formalisms.
We argue that the Weyl coordinates and the rod-structure employed to construct static axisymmetric solutions in higher dimensional Einstein gravity can be generalized to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. As a concrete application of the general formalism, we present numerical evidence for the existence of static black ring solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in five spacetime dimensions. They approach asymptotically the Minkowski background and are supported against collapse by a conical singularity in the form of a disk. An interesting feature of these solutions is that the Gauss-Bonnet…
