Assuming the validity of Dickson's conjecture, we show that the set $\mathcal{V}$ of values of the Euler's totient function $φ$ contains arbitrarily large arithmetic progressions with common difference 4. This leads to the question of proving unconditionally that this set $\mathcal{V}$ has a positive upper Banach density.
In this paper we give some relation involving values of q-Bernoulli, q-Euler and Bernstein polynomials. From these relations, we obtain some interesting identities on the q-Bernoulli, q-Euler and Bernstein polynomials.
We construct an analytic approach to evaluate odd Euler sums, multiple zeta value $ζ(3,2,\ldots,2)$ and multiple $t$-value $t\left(3,2,\ldots,2\right)$. Moreover, we also conjecture a closed expression for multiple $t$-value $t\left(2,\ldots,2,1\right)$.
The fact that the double zeta values at n and m can be written as a sum of products of two zeta values and of zeta value at m+n, whenever n+m is odd is due to Euler. We shall show a weak version of this result for the Galois l-adic realization.
For positive integers $p_1,p_2,\ldots,p_k,q$ with $q>1$, we define the Euler $T$-sum $T_{p_1p_2\cdots p_k,q}$ as the sum of those terms of the usual infinite series for the classical Euler sum $S_{p_1p_2\cdots p_k,q}$ with odd denominators. Like the Euler sums, the Euler $T$-sums can be evaluated according to the Contour integral and residue theorem. Using this fact, we obtain explicit formulas for Euler $T$-sums with repeated arguments analogous to those known for Euler sums. Euler $T$-sums can be written as rational linear combinations of the Hoffman $t$-values. Using known results for Hoffm…
The alternating multiple harmonic sums are partial sums of the infinite series defining the Euler sums which are the alternating version of the multiple zeta value series. In this paper, we present some systematic structural results of the van Hamme type congruences of these sums, collected as finite Euler sums. Moreover, we relate this to the structure of the Euler sums, which generalizes the corresponding result of the multiple zeta values. We also provide a few conjectures with extensive numerical support.
We present several formulas for some specific multiple $L$-values of conductor four. This grew out from the study of zeta functions of level four of Arakawa-Kaneko type. Closely related is a new version of multiple poly-Euler numbers and we briefly discuss this too.
We generalize well-known Catalan-type integrals for Euler's constant to values of the generalized-Euler-constant function and its derivatives. Using generating functions appeared in these integral representations we give new Vacca and Ramanujan-type series for values of the generalized-Euler-constant function and Addison-type series for values of the generalized-Euler-constant function and its derivative. As a consequence, we get base $B$ rational series for $\log\frac{4}π,$ $\frac{G}π$ (where $G$ is Catalan's constant), $\frac{ζ'(2)}{π^2}$ and also for logarithms of Somos's and Glaisher-Kinke…
In this paper, we study some Euler-Apéry-type series which involve central binomial coefficients and (generalized) harmonic numbers. In particular, we establish elegant explicit formulas of some series by iterated integrals and alternating multiple zeta values. Based on these formulas, we further show that some other series are reducible to ln(2), zeta values, and alternating multiple zeta values by considering the contour integrals related to gamma functions, polygamma functions and trigonometric functions. The evaluations of a large number of special Euler-Apéry-type series are presented as …
For a fixed odd prime q we investigate the first and second order terms of the asymptotic series expansion for the number of n\le x such that q does not divide phi(n). Part of the analysis involves a careful study of the Euler-Kronecker constants for cyclotomic fields. In particular, we show that the prime k-tuples conjecture and a conjecture of Ihara about the distribution of these Euler-Kronecker constants cannot be both true.
This is a note of talks I gave at the number theory seminar at Tsinghua University in Fall 2011. We will introduce the local and global Euler characteristic formulas given by John Tate(1962) for Galois cohomology. We will give a detailed proof based on the idea in Hida's book[1,ch4.4.5] and Milne's book[2,ch1.5].
In this paper we are interested in Euler-type sums with products of harmonic numbers, Stirling numbers and Bell numbers. We discuss the analytic representations of Euler sums through values of polylogarithm function and Riemann zeta function. Moreover, we provide explicit evaluations for almost all Euler sums with weight 5, which can be expressed in terms of zeta values and polylogarithms. Furthermore, we give explicit formula for several classes of Euler-related sums in terms of zeta values and harmonic numbers, and several examples are given. The given representations are new.
Let $\vfi$ be Euler's function, $\ga$ be Euler's constant and $N_k$ be the product of the first $k$ primes. In this article, we consider the function $c(n) =(n/\vfi(n)-e^\ga\log\log n)\sqrt{\log n}$. Under Riemann's hypothesis, it is proved that $c(N_k)$ is bounded and explicit bounds are given while, if Riemann's hypothesis fails, $c(N_k)$ is not bounded above or below.
In 1776, L. Euler proposed three methods, called prima methodus, secunda methodus and tertia methodus, to calculate formulae for double zeta values. However strictly speaking, his last two methods are mathematically incomplete and require more precise reformulation and more sophisticated arguments for their justification. In this paper, we reformulate his formulae, give their rigorous proofs and also clarify that the formulae can be derived from the extended double shuffle relations.
We give new closed and explicit formulas for "multiple zeta values" at non-positive integers of generalized Euler-Zagier multiple zeta-functions. We first prove these formulas for a small convenient class of these multiple zeta-functions and then use the analyticity of the values on the parameters defining the multiple zeta-functions to deduce the formulas in the general case. Also, for our aim we prove an extension of "Raabe's lemma" due to E. Friedman and A. Pereira.
We show that a Frobenius-semisimple Weil representation over a local field K is determined by its Euler factors over the extensions of K. The construction is explicit, and we illustrate it for l-adic representations attached to elliptic and genus 2 curves. As an application, we construct an absolutely simple 2-dimensional abelian variety over Q all of whose quadratic twists must have positive rank, according to the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.
Flajolet and Salvy pointed out that every Euler sum is a $\mathbb{Q}$-linear combination of multiple zeta values. However, in the literature, there is no formula completely revealing this relation. In this paper, using permutations and compositions, we establish two explicit formulas for the Euler sums, and show that all the Euler sums are indeed expressible in terms of MZVs. Moreover, we apply this method to the alternating Euler sums, and show that all the alternating Euler sums are reducible to alternating MZVs. Some famous results, such as the Euler theorem, the Borwein--Borwein--Girgensoh…
Let $ϕ(n)$ be the Euler-phi function, define $ϕ_0(n) = n$ and $ϕ_{k+1}(n)=ϕ(ϕ_{k}(n))$ for all $k\geq 0$. We will determine an asymptotic formula for the set of integers $n$ less than $x$ for which $ϕ_k(n)$ is $y$-smooth, conditionally on a weak form of the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture.
We define a parametric variant of generalized Euler sums and construct contour integration to give some explicit evaluations of these parametric Euler sums. In particular, we establish several explicit formulas of (Hurwitz) zeta functions, linear and quadratic parametric Euler sums. Furthermore, we also give an explicit evaluation of alternating double zeta values $\ze(\overline{2j},2m+1)$ in terms of a combination of alternating Riemann zeta values by using the parametric Euler sums.
In this paper, we study the value-distributions of $L$-functions of holomorphic primitive cusp forms in the level aspect. We associate such automorphic $L$-functions with probabilistic models called the random Euler products. First, we prove the existence of probability density functions attached to the random Euler products. Then various mean values of automorphic $L$-functions are expressed as integrals involving the density functions. Moreover, we estimate the discrepancies between the distributions of values of automorphic $L$-functions and those of the random Euler products.
In this paper, we define a parametric variant of generalized Euler sums and call them the (alternating) parametric Euler $T$-sums. By using the contour integration method and residue theorem, we establish several explicit formulae for the linear parametric Euler $T$-sums. Furthermore, by applying the results, we obtain explicit formulae for the Hoffman's (alternating) double $t$-values and Kaneko-Tsumura's (alternating) double $T$-values.
Let phi denote Euler's phi function. For a fixed odd prime we give an asymptotic series expansion in the sense of Poincare for the number E_q(x) of n<=x such that q does not divide phi(n). Thereby we improve on a recent theorem of B.K. Spearman and K.S. Williams [Ark. Mat. 44 (2006), 166-181]. Furthermore we resolve, under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, which of two approximations to E_q(x) is asymptotically superior using recent results of Y. Ihara on the Euler-Kronecker constant of a number field.
We study several variants of Euler sums by using the methods of contour integration and residue theorem. These variants exhibit nice properties such as closed forms, reduction, etc., like classical Euler sums. In addition, we also define a variant of multiple zeta values of level 2, and give some identities on relations between these variants of Euler sums and the variant of multiple zeta values.
Euler systems are certain compatible families of cohomology classes, which play a key role in studying the arithmetic of Galois representations. We briefly survey the known Euler systems, and recall a standard conjecture of Perrin-Riou predicting what kind of Euler system one should expect for a general Galois representation. Surprisingly, several recent constructions of Euler systems do not seem to fit the predictions of this conjecture, and we formulate a more general conjecture which explains these extra objects. The novel aspect of our conjecture is that it predicts that there should often…
In this paper, we study the alternating Euler $T$-sums and $§$-sums, which are infinite series involving (alternating) odd harmonic numbers, and have similar forms and close relations to the Dirichlet beta functions. By using the method of residue computations, we establish the explicit formulas for the (alternating) linear and quadratic Euler $T$-sums and $§$-sums, from which, the parity theorems of Hoffman's double and triple $t$-values and Kaneko-Tsumura's double and triple $T$-values are further obtained. As supplements, we also show that the linear $T$-sums and $§$-sums are expressible in…
In this paper we give some interesting identities between Euler numbers and zeta functions. Finally we will give the new values of Euler zeta function at positive even integers.
We prove unconditionally that for each $\ell \geq 1$, the difference $ϕ(p-\ell) - ϕ(p+\ell)$ is positive for $50\%$ of odd primes $p$ and negative for $50\%$.
In this paper, we establish some expressions of series involving harmonic numbers and Stirling numbers of the first kind in terms of multiple zeta values, and present some new relationships between multiple zeta values and multiple zeta star values. The relationships obtained allow us to find some nice closed form representations of nonlinear Euler sums through Riemann zeta values and linear sums. Furthermore, we show that the combined sums \[H\left( {a,b;m,p} \right) := \sum\limits_{a + b = m - 1} {ζ\left( {{\left\{ p \right\}_a},p + 1,{\left\{ p \right\}_b}} \right)}\quad (m\in \N,p>1) \] an…
Recently, there has been some interest in values of arithmetical functions on members of special sequences, such as Euler's totient function $ϕ$ on factorials, linear recurrences, etc. In this article, we investigate, for given positive integers $a$ and $b$, the least positive integer $c=c(a,b)$ such that the quotient $ϕ(c!)/ϕ(a!)ϕ(b!)$ is an integer. We derive results on the limit of the ratio $c(a,b)/(a+b)$ as $a$ and $b$ tend to infinity. Furthermore, we show that $c(a,b)>a+b$ for all pairs of positive integers $(a,b)$ with an exception of a set of density zero.
We study three special Dirichlet series, two of them alternating, related to the Riemann zeta function. These series are shown to have extensions to the entire complex plane and we find their values at the negative integers (or residues at poles). These values are given in terms of Bernoulli and Euler numbers.
In this paper, by using the method of Contour Integral Representations and the Theorem of Residues and integral representations of series, we discuss the analytic representa- tions of parametric Euler sums that involve harmonic numbers through zeta values and rational function series, either linearly or nonlinearly. Furthermore, we give explicit formulae for several parametric quadratic and cubic sums in terms of zeta values and rational series. Moreover, some interesting new consequences and illustrative examples are considered.
This paper concerns the values of the Euler phi-function evaluated simultaneously on k arithmetic progressions a_1 n + b_1, a_2 n + b_2, ..., a_k n + b_k. Assuming the necessary condition that no two of the polynomials a_i x + b_i are constant multiples of each other, we show that there are infinitely many integers n for which phi(a_1 n + b_1) > phi(a_2 n + b_2) > ... > phi(a_k n + b_k). In particular, there exist infinitely many strings of k consecutive integers whose phi-values are arranged from largest to smallest in any prescribed manner. Also, under the necessary condition ad \ne bc, any …
The double zeta function was first studied by Euler in response to a letter from Goldbach in 1742. One of Euler's results for this function is a decomposition formula, which expresses the product of two values of the Riemann zeta function as a finite sum of double zeta values involving binomial coefficients. In this note, we establish a q-analog of Euler's decomposition formula. More specifically, we show that Euler's decomposition formula can be extended to what might be referred to as a ``double q-zeta function'' in such a way that Euler's formula is recovered in the limit as q tends to 1.
We characterize which residue classes contain infinitely many totients (values of Euler's function) and which do not. We show that the union of all residue classes that are totient-free has asymptotic density 3/4, that is, almost all numbers that are 2 mod 4 are in a residue class that is totient-free. In the other direction, we show the existence of a positive density of odd numbers m, such that for any $s\ge0$ and any even number $a$, the residue class $a\pmod{2^sm}$ contains infinitely many totients.
In this paper we propose a construction of $p$-adic Euler $\ell$-function using Kubota-Leopoldt's approach and Washington's one. We also compute the derivative of $p$-adic Euler $\ell$-function at $s=0$ and the values of $p$-adic Euler $\ell$-function at positives integers.
We compute the special values at nonpositive integers of the partial zeta function of an ideal of a real quadratic field applying an asymptotic version of Euler-Maclaurin formula to the lattice cone associated to the ideal considered. The Euler-Maclaurin formula involved is obtained by applying the Todd series of differential operators to an integral of a small perturbation of thecone. The additive property of Todd series w.r.t. the cone decomposition enables us to express the partial zeta values in terms of the continued fraction of the reduced element of the ideal. The expression obtained us…
We show how to calculate the Euler characteristic of a local system associated to an irreducible representation of the symplectic group of genus 3 on the moduli space of curves of genus 3 and the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension 3.
We study a special Dirichlet series studied before by Apostol and Matsuoka and specify its values at negative integers. These values are related to a certain convolution of Bernoulli numbers
In this note we shall study the Witten multiple zeta function associated to the Lie algebra so(5) defined by Matsumoto. Our main result shows that its special values at nonnegative integers are always expressible by alternating Euler sums. More precisely, every such special value of weight w>2 is a finite rational linear combination of alternating Euler sums of weight w and depth at most two, except when the only nonzero argument is one of the two last variables in which case $ζ(w-1)$ is needed.
In this paper, we present new explicit simultaneous rational approximations converging sub-exponentially to the values of Bell polynomials at the points of the form $(γ, 1! (2a+1)ζ(2), 2!ζ(3),..., (m-1)!(a+1+(-1)^ma)ζ(m)),$ $m=1,2,...,a,$ $a\in{\mathbb N}.$
An elementary method of computing the values at negative integers of the Riemann zeta function is presented. The principal ingredient is a new q-analogue of the Riemann zeta function. We show that for any argument other than 1 the classical limit of this q-analogue exists and equals the value of the Riemann zeta.
Let $T$ be the triangle with vertices (1,0), (0,1), (1,1). We study certain integrals over $T$, one of which was computed by Euler. We give expressions for them both as a linear combination of multiple zeta values, and as a polynomial in single zeta values. We obtain asymptotic expansions of the integrals, and of sums of certain multiple zeta values with constant weight. We also give related expressions for Euler's constant. In the final section, we evaluate more general integrals -- one is a Chen (Drinfeld-Kontsevich) iterated integral -- over some polytopes that are higher-dimensional analog…
The Hurwitz-type Euler zeta function is defined as a deformation of the Hurwitz zeta function: \begin{equation*} ζ_E(s,x)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{(-1)^n}{(n+x)^s}. \end{equation*} In this paper, by using the method of Fourier expansions, we shall evaluate several integrals with integrands involving Hurwitz-type Euler zeta functions $ζ_E(s,x)$. Furthermore, the relations between the values of a class of the Hurwitz-type (or Lerch-type) Euler zeta functions at rational arguments have also been given.
We give an explicit formula for the shuffle relation in a general double shuffle framework that specializes to double shuffle relations of multiple zeta values and multiple polylogarithms. As an application, we generalize the well-known decomposition formula of Euler that expresses the product of two Riemann zeta values as a sum of double zeta values to a formula that expresses the product of two multiple polylogarithm values as a sum of other multiple polylogarithm values.
