Active Object Tracking (AOT) is crucial to many visionbased applications, e.g., mobile robot, intelligent surveillance. However, there are a number of challenges when deploying active tracking in complex scenarios, e.g., target is frequently occluded by obstacles. In this paper, we extend the single-camera AOT to a multi-camera setting, where cameras tracking a target in a collaborative fashion. To achieve effective collaboration among cameras, we propose a novel Pose-Assisted Multi-Camera Collaboration System, which enables a camera to cooperate with the others by sharing camera poses for active object tracking. In the system, each camera is equipped with two controllers and a switcher: The vision-based controller tracks targets based on observed images. The pose-based controller moves the camera in accordance to the poses of the other cameras. At each step, the switcher decides which action to take from the two controllers according to the visibility of the target. The experimental results demonstrate that our system outperforms all the baselines and is capable of generalizing to unseen environments. The code and demo videos are available on our website https://sites.google.com/view/pose-assistedcollaboration.

Active Multi-Object Tracking (AMOT) is a task where cameras are controlled by a centralized system to adjust their poses automatically and collaboratively so as to maximize the coverage of targets in their shared visual field. In AMOT, each camera only receives partial information from its observation, which may mislead cameras to take locally optimal action. Besides, the global goal, i.e., maximum coverage of objects, is hard to be directly optimized. To address the above issues, we propose a coordinate-aligned multi-camera collaboration system for AMOT. In our approach, we regard each camera…

We address the unsupervised learning of several interconnected problems in low-level vision: single view depth prediction, camera motion estimation, optical flow, and segmentation of a video into the static scene and moving regions. Our key insight is that these four fundamental vision problems are coupled through geometric constraints. Consequently, learning to solve them together simplifies the problem because the solutions can reinforce each other. We go beyond previous work by exploiting geometry more explicitly and segmenting the scene into static and moving regions. To that end, we intro…
Robust and accurate six degree-of-freedom tracking on portable devices remains a challenging problem, especially on small hand-held devices such as smartphones. For improved robustness and accuracy, complementary movement information from an IMU and a camera is often fused. Conventional visual-inertial methods fuse information from IMUs with a sparse cloud of feature points tracked by the device camera. We consider a visually dense approach, where the IMU data is fused with the dense optical flow field estimated from the camera data. Learning-based methods applied to the full image frames can …
Conventional computer-assisted orthopaedic navigation systems rely on the tracking of dedicated optical markers for patient poses, which makes the surgical workflow more invasive, tedious, and expensive. Visual tracking has recently been proposed to measure the target anatomy in a markerless and effortless way, but the existing methods fail under real-world occlusion caused by intraoperative interventions. Furthermore, such methods are hardware-specific and not accurate enough for surgical applications. In this paper, we propose a RGB-D sensing-based markerless tracking method that is robust a…
In this paper, we focus on the multi-object tracking (MOT) problem of automatic driving and robot navigation. Most existing MOT methods track multiple objects using a singular RGB camera, which are prone to camera field-of-view and suffer tracking failures in complex scenarios due to background clutters and poor light conditions. To meet these challenges, we propose a MultiModality PAnoramic multi-object Tracking framework (MMPAT), which takes both 2D panorama images and 3D point clouds as input and then infers target trajectories using the multimodality data. The proposed method contains four…

We propose a novel and pragmatic framework for traffic scene perception with roadside cameras. The proposed framework covers a full-stack of roadside perception pipeline for infrastructure-assisted autonomous driving, including object detection, object localization, object tracking, and multi-camera information fusion. Unlike previous vision-based perception frameworks rely upon depth offset or 3D annotation at training, we adopt a modular decoupling design and introduce a landmark-based 3D localization method, where the detection and localization can be well decoupled so that the model can be…

Pedicle screw insertion technique has made revolution in the surgical treatment of spinal fractures and spinal disorders. Although X- ray fluoroscopy based navigation is popular, there is risk of prolonged exposure to X- ray radiation. Systems that have lower radiation risk are generally quite expensive. The position and orientation of the drill is clinically very important in pedicle screw fixation. In this paper, the position and orientation of the marker on the drill is determined using pattern recognition based methods, using geometric features, obtained from the input video sequence taken…

Robotic-assisted surgeries benefit both surgeons and patients, however, surgeons frequently need to adjust the endoscopic camera to achieve good viewpoints. Simultaneously controlling the camera and the surgical instruments is impossible, and consequentially, these camera adjustments repeatedly interrupt the surgery. Autonomous camera control could help overcome this challenge, but most existing systems are reactive, e.g., by having the camera follow the surgical instruments. We propose a predictive approach for anticipating when camera movements will occur using artificial neural networks. We…

This paper presents a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) scheme for proactive Multi-Camera Collaboration in 3D Human Pose Estimation in dynamic human crowds. Traditional fixed-viewpoint multi-camera solutions for human motion capture (MoCap) are limited in capture space and susceptible to dynamic occlusions. Active camera approaches proactively control camera poses to find optimal viewpoints for 3D reconstruction. However, current methods still face challenges with credit assignment and environment dynamics. To address these issues, our proposed method introduces a novel Collaborative T…

Camera-only 3D detection provides an economical solution with a simple configuration for localizing objects in 3D space compared to LiDAR-based detection systems. However, a major challenge lies in precise depth estimation due to the lack of direct 3D measurements in the input. Many previous methods attempt to improve depth estimation through network designs, e.g., deformable layers and larger receptive fields. This work proposes an orthogonal direction, improving the camera-only 3D detection by introducing multi-agent collaborations. Our proposed collaborative camera-only 3D detection (CoCa3D…
Multi-human 3D pose estimation plays a key role in establishing a seamless connection between the real world and the virtual world. Recent efforts adopted a two-stage framework that first builds 2D pose estimations in multiple camera views from different perspectives and then synthesizes them into 3D poses. However, the focus has largely been on developing new computer vision algorithms on the offline video datasets without much consideration on the energy constraints in real-world systems with flexibly-deployed and battery-powered cameras. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient edge-as…
This paper presents a novel method for fully automatic and convenient extrinsic calibration of a 3D LiDAR and a panoramic camera with a normally printed chessboard. The proposed method is based on the 3D corner estimation of the chessboard from the sparse point cloud generated by one frame scan of the LiDAR. To estimate the corners, we formulate a full-scale model of the chessboard and fit it to the segmented 3D points of the chessboard. The model is fitted by optimizing the cost function under constraints of correlation between the reflectance intensity of laser and the color of the chessboar…
Recognizing actions from a video feed is a challenging task to automate, especially so on older hardware. There are two aims for this project: one is to recognize an action from the front-facing camera on an Android phone, the other is to support as many phones and Android versions as possible. This limits us to using models that are small enough to run on mobile phones with and without GPUs, and only using the camera feed to recognize the action. In this paper we compare performance of the YOLO architecture across devices (with and without dedicated GPUs) using models trained on a custom data…

6D object pose estimation aims to infer the relative pose between the object and the camera using a single image or multiple images. Most works have focused on predicting the object pose without associated uncertainty under occlusion and structural ambiguity (symmetricity). However, these works demand prior information about shape attributes, and this condition is hardly satisfied in reality; even asymmetric objects may be symmetric under the viewpoint change. In addition, acquiring and fusing diverse sensor data is challenging when extending them to robotics applications. Tackling these limit…

To mitigate the data scarcity issue and improve the scalability of the neural localization models, we introduce TOPO-DataGen, a versatile synthetic data generation tool that traverses smoothly between the real and virtual world, hinged on the geographic camera viewpoint. As camera and LiDAR sensors capture complementary information used in autonomous driving, great efforts have been made to develop semantic segmentation algorithms through multi-modality data fusion. However, fusion-based approaches require paired data, i.e., LiDAR point clouds and camera images with strict point-to-pixel mappings, as the inputs in both training and inference, which seriously hinders their application in practical scenarios. Thus, in this work, we propose the 2D Priors Assisted Semantic Segmentation (2DPASS), a general training scheme, to boost the representation learning on po…
Rolling shutter distortion is highly undesirable for photography and computer vision algorithms (e.g., visual SLAM) because pixels can be potentially captured at different times and poses. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network to predict depth and row-wise pose from a single image for rolling shutter correction. Our contribution in this work is to incorporate inertial measurement unit (IMU) data into the pose refinement process, which, compared to the state-of-the-art, greatly enhances the pose prediction. The improved accuracy and robustness make it possible for numerous vision algo…

Dynamic 3D object tracking has then become a significant capability in visual SLAM with the requirement of understanding dynamic surroundings in various scenarios including autonomous driving, augmented and virtual reality. However, performing dynamic SLAM solely with monocular images remains a challenging problem due to the difficulty of associating dynamic features and estimating their positions. In this paper, we present MOTSLAM, a dynamic visual SLAM system with the monocular configur…

Precise localization of polyp is crucial for early cancer screening in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Videos given by endoscopy bring both richer contextual information as well as more challenges than still images. The camera-moving situation, instead of the common camera-fixed-object-moving one, leads to significant background variation between frames. Severe internal artifacts (e.g. water flow in the human body, specular reflection by tissues) can make the quality of adjacent frames vary considerately. These factors hinder a video-based model to effectively aggregate features from neighborhood …
4D radar is recognized for its resilience and cost-effectiveness under adverse weather conditions, thus playing a pivotal role in autonomous driving. While cameras and LiDAR are typically the primary sensors used in perception modules for autonomous vehicles, radar serves as a valuable supplementary sensor. Unlike LiDAR and cameras, radar remains unimpaired by harsh weather conditions, thereby offering a dependable alternative in challenging environments. Developing radar-based 3D object detection not only augments the competency of autonomous vehicles but also provides economic benefits. In r…
