The lecture discusses both the current status of the LHC collider as well as its future running scenarios. In addition a selection of the latest physics results from ATLAS/CMS and LHCb is presented.
We discuss the current status and the physics prospects at the LHCb detector, the dedicated B physics detector at the LHC, due to start data taking in 2007.
The LHCb experiment at LHC is a single-arm spectrometer designed to pursue an extensive study of B physics and CP violation. In this contribution the physics which will be performed by LHCb is reviewed.
Future Experiments at LHC will have the opportunity to pursue an extensive program on B Physics and CP violation. The expected performance are presented here.
In the following, the prospects for measuring the SM Higgs properties at the LHC are reviewed, in particular its mass, width, spin, CP eigenstates as well as its couplings to the SM fermions and gauge bosons. The possibility of performing the difficult trilinear Higgs self-coupling measurement is also discussed.
We present the recent prospects and strategies of the ATLAS and CMS experiments in the search for signatures of Supersymmetry. The emphasis is placed on standard signatures with missing transverse energy and on the initial data taking periods.
High-precision measurements performed by the LHCb collaboration have opened a new era in charm physics. Several crucial measurements, particularly in spectroscopy, rare decays and CP violation, can benefit from the increased statistical power of an upgraded LHCb detector. The upgrade of LHCb detector, its software infrastructure, and the impact on charm physics are discussed in detail.
The status and prospects of time-integrated measurements of the CKM angle gamma at LHCb, the LHC's dedicated flavor physics experiment, are reviewed. Yields obtained from early data taking are presented and extrapolations are made to estimate what can be expected to be obtained from the 2011 data. The conclusions drawn from these extrapolations are that LHCb will produce the world's best measurement of gamma by the end of 2011 and that the long-term outlook is excellent.
The LHCb experiment is running at the Large Hadron Collider to study CP violation and rare decays in the beauty and charm sectors. The physics potential is given for five key observables sensitive to new physics in nominal conditions. The motivation and the strategy of the upgrade envisaged for 2016 is presented with the expected performance for an integrated luminosity of 50 1/fb.
As first Run II data acquisition has begun, it is useful to expose the pending questions by reviewing some of the most recent results obtained with Run I data analyses. Early results of the current data taking and middle-term prospects are also shown to illustrate the efficiency of the acquisition and analysis chain.
LHCb is the heavy flavour precision experiment of the proton-proton Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It will search for new physics in CP violation and rare decays and is ready for the start-up of the LHC. An overview of its physics program will be given, illustrated by few key examples: measurements of the CKM angle $γ$, of the CP violating phase in $ B_s \overline{B_s}$ oscillations and searches for new physics in $B^0_d \to K^*μ^+μ^-$ and in $B^0_s \to μ^+μ^-$.
This talk is a review of possible discoveries of exotic not Standard Model Physics in the early stage of LHC (first two years), with the ATLAS and CMS experiments. LHC will be the first experiment ever to explore the TeV region and new exotic particles could be discovered at early stages of the LHC running if their masses are not too large. This talk is focused on three main search topics: new vector bosons, contact interaction and extra dimensions.
The prospects for electroweak measurements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are discussed. In addition to high-luminosity results, special emphasis is placed on early start-up measurements with a total luminosity ranging from 10/pb to 100/pb, using the general-purpose detectors ATLAS and CMS and their initially larger calibration and alignment uncertainties. Topics discussed here include inclusive W and Z production, W-boson mass, Z forward-backward asymmetry, Z-plus-jets production and di-boson production, the latter constraining trilinear electroweak gauge couplings. (Invited talk at the 3…
The LHCb experiment is running at the Large Hadron Collider to study CP violation and rare decays in the beauty and charm sectors. The motivation and the strategy of the upgrade envisaged for the long shutdown LS2 (2018) is presented. The current results for some exemplary physics analyses are given and the expected performances foreseen for 2018 and for the LHCb Upgrade project with an integrated luminosity of 50 fb$^{-1}$ are summarized.
Future lepton colliders will have a rich top quark physics program which would add to our understanding of this interesting quark and promise an ultimate precision on the experimental knowledge of top-quark mass. We present possible improvements in the understanding of systematic uncertainties for various top-quark mass measurement techniques at the LHC, including projections for running conditions foreseen in the future.
An estimation of the sensitivity to measure Bs-Bsbar oscillations with the ATLAS detector is given for the detector geometry of initial layout. The delta ms reach is derived from unbinned maximum likelihood amplitude fits using Bs0 events generated with a simplified Monte Carlo method.
The Large Hadron Collider will be a unique place to find new physics in the next decade. A huge production of b and c quarks will allow a rich programme of Heavy Flavour Physics to be carried out either by the multipurpose experiments ATLAS and CMS or by LHCb, the experiment designed for such physics. An overview of the LHC machine and experiments' performances will be given with the first 2010 data. The start-up is very bright and some first LHC heavy flavour results will be presented. The b physics program at LHC will be illustrated with three examples: the searches for rare decays such as B…
We present the prospects for the discovery or exclusion of heavy vector-like charge 2/3 quarks, T, in proton-proton collisions at two center-of-mass energies, 14 and 33 TeV at the LHC. In this note, the pair production of T quark and its antiparticle, with decays to W boson and a b quark (Wb), a top quark and the Higgs boson (tH), and a top quark and Z boson (tZ) are investigated. Higgs boson decays to $b\bar b$ and $W^+W^-$ final states are selected for this study.
The search for the Higgs boson is a major physics goal of the future Large Hadron Collider. The discovery potential is described as a function of the Higgs mass. It is shown that a Standard Model Higgs boson can be discovered within the first year of data taking. The status of MSSM Higgs searches is also discussed.
Single top quark processes are interesting as direct probes of the $Wtb$ vertex, and are also an important background in searches of the Higgs boson and beyond the standard model physics. Both ATLAS and CMS have performed studies with simulated data to estimate the expected uncertainty on the production cross section measurements of the three single top processes ($t$-channel, s-channel, $tW$ production) in the first years of LHC operations. Results in the different channels and for the two experiments are reported.
Triggering on hadronic tau decays is essential for a wide variety of analyses of interesting physics processes at ATLAS. The ATLAS tau trigger combines information from the tracking detectors and calorimeters to identify the signature of hadronically decaying tau leptons. In Run 2 operation expected to start in 2015, the trigger strategies will become more important than ever before. In this paper, the tau trigger performance during Run 1 is summarized and also an overview of the developments of Run 2 tau trigger strategy is presented.
With a high instantaneous luminosity and the large top quark pair production cross section, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be a "top factory" allowing the analysis of millions of top events. After a short description of the top quark pair production mechanism and the cross section measurement, the accuracy of the top mass measurement needed for a sound consistency check of the Standard Model is briefly discussed. Different top mass measurement methods are presented. The observability of the single top quark production is described. Finally the observation of the Higgs boson produced in a…
The possibility to observe a Higgs boson having a mass between 300 and 600 GeV and to measure its couplings to vector bosons and top quark with CMS at the LHC is studied. Six different signatures are analyzed. The possibility to separate the Higgs events produced through weak boson fusion from the Higgs produced through gluon fusion using the forward going jets emitted in the weak boson fusion process is discussed for each of these different channels. The results are then used to determine the possible statistical errors on the ratio between the two Higgs decay branching fractions when it deca…
{Since the start of the Large Hadron Collider program, direct searches for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) particles have constrained their mass scale to limits which are now above the energy reach of the current collider. As a result, studies of indirect probes of BSM physics have gained a considerable momentum, both experimentally and theoretically. The flavour anomalies in $b$ hadron decays are now recognized as an important laboratory for the indirect detection of BSM physics. This short review presents several key analyses in this area, and some prospects with future data.
We report on the potential for the discovery of a Standard Model Higgs boson with the vector boson fusion mechanism in the mass range $115<M_H<500 \gev/$c$^2$ with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Feasibility studies at hadron level followed by a fast detector simulation have been performed for $H\to W^{(*)}W^{(*)}\to l^+l^-\sla{p_T}$, $H\toγγ$ and $H\to ZZ\to l^+l^-q\bar{q}$. The preliminary results obtained here show a large discovery potential in the range $115<M_H<300 \gev/$c$^2$. Results obtained with multivariate techniques are reported for a number of channels.
We review the current strategies to search for generic SUSY models with R-parity conservation in the ATLAS and CMS detectors at the LHC. The discovery reach in early data will be presented for the different search channels based on missing transverse momentum from undetected neutralinos and multiple jets. We will also describe the search for models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking for which the NLSP is a neutralino decaying to a photon and a gravitino. Finally, we will present recent work on techniques used to reconstruct the decays of SUSY particles at the LHC in early data, based on …
I will review simplified models with leptoquarks, which can explain recent anomalies in $B$-meson physics, and I will indicate the High-Luminosity LHC prospects for testing these theories, with a special focus to the efficient channel of pair leptoquark production in the $t\bar t$ plus missing energy final state.
We show prospects on a search for invisible decays of a Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). This search is performed on a Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson. We expect that the branching ratio of 17-22% (6-14%) could be excluded at 95% confidence level with 300 fb^{-1} (3000 fb^{-1}) of data at sqrt(s)=14 TeV. The range indicates different assumptions on the control of systematic uncertainties. Interpretations with Higgs-portal dark matter models are also considered.
This note presents the prospects of searches for new heavy resonances decaying to diboson (WW) and measurements of electroweak WW/WZ production via vector boson scattering (VBS) in association with a high-mass dijet system in the $\ellνqq$ final states ($W\to\ellν$, $W/Z\to qq$). The prospects are presented for an integrated luminosity of 15 ab$^{-1}$ of proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at $\sqrt{s}=27$ TeV with an ATLAS-like detector simulated in the Delphes framework. The cross-section measurement of the electroweak $WW/WZ$ production in VBS processes is expected to reach the precision of $\s…
High-energy collisions at the LHC are now starting. The new physics agenda of the LHC is reviewed, with emphasis on the hunt for the Higgs boson (or whatever replaces it) and supersymmetry. In particular, the prospects for discovering new physics in the 2010-2011 run are discussed.
The prospects of measuring the CKM matrix elements |V_tq| with top quarks decays at the LHC are discussed here, with the top quarks produced in the processes pp \rightarrow ttbarX and pp \rightarrow t/tbarX, and the subsequent decays t \rightarrow Ws and/or tbar \rightarrow Wsbar. As for the direct measurement of |V_tb|, there is also a lot of interest in the direct measurements of |V_ts| and |V_td|, as the absolute values of these CKM matrix elements can be modified by approximately a factor 2 from their SM values. Direct determination of these matrix elements will require a good tagging of t…
These lectures were presented at the 2019 CERN Latin-American School of High Energy Physics. They were centered on the experimental methods used in hadron colliders to advance our understanding in the field of high energy particle physics. From accelerators, to particle detector technologies, object identification and data analyses techniques, the lectures did not attempt to provide a comprehensive, in-depth technical background, but rather focused on an overview of experimental techniques that enabled our advances in supporting and challenging the predictions of the standard model. This docum…
We present the results and prospects for searches beyond the Standard Model (SM) at the LHC by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. The minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM has been investigated in various configurations and lower limits are set on the s-particle masses. The searches for other scenarios of physics beyond the SM are also presented and lower limits on the mass scale are derived in a large variety of models (new heavy gauge bosons, extra-dimensions, compositeness or dark matter). The prospects for physics using 300 /fb and 3000 /fb of data at the high luminosity LHC are also s…
The ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will allow the study of resonance production in nucleus-nucleus and proton-proton collisions. This paper presents results based on physics performance studies to discuss prospects in ALICE for $ϕ$(1020) meson production in pp interactions during the LHC startup.
The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider is expected to deliver up to 3000 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy. We present prospects for selected heavy-ion, Standard Model and Higgs sector measurements with the CMS detector at the HL-LHC, and discuss potential sensitivity to several beyond-Standard Model new physics scenarios.
The discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC opened up a new possibility to obtain a precise understanding of the origin of mass and the structure of the vacuum. Several theories beyond the Standard Model predict an extended Higgs sector, with additional scalar particles. We outline the complementary search possibilities for these beyond Standard Model Higgs bosons at the LHC and at possible future high-energy collider facilities.
We present a summary of the most recent measurements relevant to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) delivered by the D0 and CDF Tevatron experiments by May 2008. CDF and D0 are moving toward precision measurements of QCD based on data samples in excess of 1 fb-1. The inclusive jet cross sections have been extended to forward rapidity regions and measured with unprecedented precision following improvements in the jet energy calibration. Results on dijet mass distributions, bbbar dijet production using tracker based triggers, underlying event in dijet and Drell-Yan samples, inclusive photon and diphot…
This article summarizes a talk given at Higgs Hunting 2014 on projections of the sensitivity of the ATLAS and CMS experiments to beyond Standard Model Higgs physics at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. We describe results on vector boson scattering, searches for additional neutral Higgs bosons in two Higgs doublet models and flavour changing neutral current top decays.
We discuss the implementation of the "minimal" type III seesaw model, i.e. with one fermionic triplet, in FeynRules/MadGraph. This is the first step in order to realize a real study of LHC data recorded in the LHC detectors. With this goal in mind, we comment on the possibility of discovering this kind of new physics at the LHC running at 7 TeV with a luminosity of few fb^-1.
The charge asymmetry in hadronic top-antitop-quark production is a powerful test observable of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Since its origin in terms of Feynman diagrams is distinct from charge-symmetric top-antitop production, probing the charge asymmetry provides complementary information to cross section measurements. Furthermore, asymmetric observables offer new ways to distinguish new physics beyond the standard model. This article summarizes prospects to investigate the top-quark charge asymmetry at the LHC in and beyond the standard model. Particular attention is given to observ…
Run 1 of the LHC has provided three new motivations for supersymmetry: the need to stabilize the electroweak vacuum, the mass of the Higgs boson, and the fact that its couplings are Standard Model-like (so far). The prospects for discovering (and measuring) supersymmetry during future runs of the LHC are discussed in the frameworks of the constrained MSSM (CMSSM), models with non-universal soft supersymmetry-breaking contributions to Higgs masses (NUHM1,2) and the phenomenological MSSM with 10 arbitrary soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters (pMSSM10). In addition to the classic searches for m…
The document is prepared for the LCWS2016 conference proceedings. The expected status of Higgs physics at the end of Run-3 is presented. The current Run-2 status is briefly reviewed, and the expected Higgs reach after the HL-LHC period is also summarized for some channels.
Data taking for Run II of the HERMES experiment will start in late 2001 with three main physics objectives for the next 4-5 years: a measurement of transversity distributions, an improved measurement of helicity distributions, and measurements of exclusive reactions to access Generalized Parton Distributions.
Recent results and future prospects for Y(5S) running at B-factories are discussed. The first Belle measurements with 23.6 fb-1 of data taken at the Y(5S) energy are reported. Eligibility of potential measurements expected with 100 fb-1 and 1000 fb-1 of data at the Y(5S) is estimated.
A quantitative discussion on the future prospects of the 750 GeV resonance at the LHC experiment is given using a simple effective field theory analysis. The relative size of two effective operators relevant to diphoton decays can be probed by ratios of diboson signals in a robust way. We obtain the future sensitivities of $Zγ$, $ZZ$ and $WW$ resonance searches at the high luminosity LHC, rescaling from the current sensitivities at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Then, we show that a large fraction of parameter space in the effective field theory will be covered with 300 fb$^{-1}$ and almost the whole para…
We present a summary of top quark physics results from Run 1 at CDF using the Run 1 data sample of 106 pb$^{-1}$. In addition to the precursory measurements of the top quark mass and $\ttbar$ cross section, we have performed a number of other analyses which test the consistency of the $\ttbar$ data sample with the standard model (SM). Deviations from SM expectations could provide hints for new physics. We find that the data are consistent with the SM. While the Run 1 data are statistically limited, we have shown that the systematic uncertainties are under control and thus have layed the ground…
The D0 Detector at Fermilab is currently undergoing an extensive upgrade to participate in the Run II data taking which shall begin on March 1, 2001. The design of the detector meets the requirements of the high luminosity environment provided by the accelerator. This paper describes the upgraded detector subsystems and gives a brief outline of the physics prospects associated with the upgrade.
This document is prepared for the LCWS2016 conference proceedings. It reviews the current results on the Higgs CP property measurements from both ATLAS and CMS experiments in the Higgs to diboson decays, and in the Vector Boson Fusion production of Higgs via the ditau decay channel. The projected sensitivity of the ditau signal in HL-LHC is briefly discussed. Finally, it gives the prospects for the CP measurement in the Higgs to ditau decay with the tau substructure developments at both collaborations.
The LHC Run-1 was very successful and included the discovery of a new particle with mass of about 125 GeV compatible with the Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model. The prospects for Higgs physics at the high-luminosity LHC and at future colliders are presented. In particular, the ultimate precision attainable for the couplings measurements of the 125 GeV particle with elementary fermions and bosons is discussed along with prospects for self-coupling measurements, for the ATLAS and CMS detectors at the upgraded LHC.
Searches for Beyond the Standard Model Higgs processes in the context of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and Next to MSSM are presented. The results are based on the first LHC run of pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of about 5 and 20 fb$^{-1}$ respectively. Current searches constrain large parts of the parameter space. No evidence for BSM Higgs is found.
LHCb is a dedicated detector for b and c physics at the LHC. I will present a concise review of the detector design and expected performance together with some first results on the commissioning of the different sub-systems based on cosmic data and particle beams delivered by the LHC during the summer of 2008. The experiment is ready to exploit first data expected from the LHC. An integrated luminosity of ~0.3fb-1, which should be collected during the first year of physics running, will already allow LHCb to perform a number of very significant mesurements with the potential of revealing New P…
The claim that the W boson mass might be measured at the LHC with a precision of O(10 MeV) is critically reviewed. It is argued that such a precision cannot be achieved, unless a dedicated measurement program, specific to the LHC is pursued. We propose such a program. Its main target is to significantly improve the experimental control of the relative polarisation of the W+, W- and Z bosons. We propose to achieve this goal either by running dedicated isoscalar beams at the LHC or by running, in parallel to the standard p-p collision program, a dedicated muon scattering "LHC-support-experiment"…
The search for new physics is a major goal of the LHC physics program. As excitement grows for the upcoming start of Run 2, I review the CMS and ATLAS searches for physics beyond the Standard Model from Run 1 and present recent analyses. These searches have covered a wide range of new physics scenarios including Supersymmetry, new resonances, additional Higgs bosons, new hidden sectors, other Dark Matter, and multi-charged particles. In addition to reviewing some of the techniques that made the analyses possible, I will summarize what we have learned from the results and briefly discuss prospe…
We study the discovery potential of the $cg \to tA\to tZH$ process at the LHC, where $A$ and $H$ are CP-odd and even exotic scalars, respectively. The context is the general Two Higgs Doublet Model, where $cg \to tA$ is induced by the flavor changing neutral Higgs coupling $ρ_{tc}$. We find that the process $cg \to tA\to tZH$ can be discovered for $m_A \sim 400$ GeV, but would likely require high luminosity running of the LHC. Such a discovery would shed light on the mechanism behind the observed Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe. We also study $cg \to tA\to tZh$, where $h$ is the observed 125 …
For a long time, global fits of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model (SM) have been used to exploit measurements of electroweak precision observables at lepton colliders (LEP, SLC), together with measurements at hadron colliders (Tevatron, LHC), and accurate theoretical predictions at multi-loop level, to constrain free parameters of the SM, such as the Higgs and top masses. Today, all fundamental SM parameters entering these fits are experimentally determined, including information on the Higgs couplings, and the global fits are used as powerful tools to assess the validity of the the…
The ATLAS and CMS experiments will take first data soon. I consider here the prospects for new physics (excluding SUSY) with a few inverse fb of data. This means processes with signal cross sections of a few 100 fb or less, with clear and fairly simple signatures - precision comparison of data to Standard Model tails will take longer, needing more luminosity and very good understanding of detector calibrations, resolutions and trigger efficiencies. The approach I take here is signature rather than model based, but examples of models will be given.
We report on the potentialities offered by a fixed-target experiment at the LHC using the proton and ion LHC beams (AFTER@LHC project) regarding the study of J/psi exclusive-photoproduction in pA and AA collisions. The foreseen usage of polarised targets (hydrogen, deuteron, helium) gives access to measurements of the Single-Transverse-Spin Asymmetries of this exclusive process, therefore allowing one to access the helicity-flip Generalised Parton Distribution (GPD) Eg. We detail the expected yields of photoproduced J/psi in proton-hydrogen and lead-hydrogen collisions and discuss the statisti…
Run 1 at the LHC was very successful with the discovery of a new boson. The boson's properties are found to be compatible with those of the Standard Model Higgs boson. It is now revealing the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking and (possibly) the discovery of physics beyond the Standard Model that are the primary goals of the just restarted LHC. The ultimate precision will be reached at the High-Luminosity LHC phase with a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV. In this contribution physics prospects are presented for ATLAS for the integrated luminosities 300/fb and 3000/fb: the …
In this work, we aim to provide a comprehensive and largely model independent investigation on prospects to detect long-lived multiply charged particles at the LHC. We consider particles with spin 0 and $\frac{1}{2}$, with electric charges in range $1 \le |Q/e| \le 8$, which are singlet or triplet under $SU(3)_C$. Such particles might be produced as particle-antiparticle pairs and propagate through detectors, or form a positronium(quarkonium)-like bound state. We consider both possibilities and estimate lower mass bounds on new particles, that can be provided by ATLAS, CMS and MoEDAL experimen…
