The ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will allow the study of resonance production in nucleus-nucleus and proton-proton collisions. This paper presents results based on physics performance studies to discuss prospects in ALICE for $ϕ$(1020) meson production in pp interactions during the LHC startup.
The measurement of light vector meson production (ρ, ω, ϕ) in pp collisions provides insight into soft Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) processes in the LHC energy range. Calculations in this regime are based on QCD inspired phenomenological models that must be tuned to the data. Moreover, light vector meson production provides a reference for high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The azimuthal correlation of D mesons with charged particles in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV was measured using the ALICE detector at LHC. This measurement allows us to gain insight into heavy-flavour production processes and parton shower. The results are compared with the measurement performed in p-Pb collisions. The yield of charged particles in the near-side correlation peak and the peak width measured in the two collision systems are compatible, within the uncertainties, and described by Monte Carlo simulations.
The $\textit p_{T}$-differential cross section of D mesons in the rapidity range $|y|< 0.5$ was measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76, 7 and 8 TeV. D mesons were reconstructed in their hadronic decay channels by means of the invariant mass analysis. The D-meson production cross sections is compared among different energies and to pQCD calculations. Also the prompt D meson are studied as a function of the multiplicity of charged articles produced in inelastic pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. The measurements are compared with model calculations.
The purpose of the ALICE experiment at the LHC is the study of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a state of matter in which quarks and gluons are deconfined. The ALICE experiment is equipped with electromagnetic calorimeters of two different types: PHOS, the lead-tungstate photon spectrometer, and EMCAL, the sampling lead-scintillator calorimeter. These two detectors measure photon spectra in a wide kinematic range and allow the reconstruction of neutral mesons decaying into photons. The measurement of the inclusive spectra of neutral meson production in pp collisions will not only provide a test of perturbative QCD but also important reference data for future heavy-ion measurements. The measurement of D-meson production in heavy-ion collisions at LHC energy provides insights into the mechanisms of interaction of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium formed in these collisions. ALICE results on the D-meson nuclear modification factor and azimuthal anisotropy in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV are presented.
We present the preliminary pt differential cross section in pp collisions of the D+s meson measured in the mid-rapidity region of ALICE with an integrated luminosity of 4.8 nb^-1. The ratios between all the D meson preliminary pt differential cross sections measured in the ALICE experiment (D+s,D0,D+,D*+) are also presented and compared with the results of other experiments.
We present here recent open heavy-flavour results from the ALICE experiment, including measurements of D-meson, $\mathrm{Λ_{c}^{+}}$ baryon and $\mathrm{Ξ_c^0}$ baryon production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7~\mathrm{TeV}$ and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02~\mathrm{TeV}$.
The ALICE detector has been commissioned and is ready for taking data at the Large Hadron Collider. The first proton-proton collisions are expected in 2009. This contribution describes the current status of the detector, the results of the commissioning phase and its capabilities to contribute to the understanding of both pp and PbPb collisions
ALICE is the general purpose heavy-ion detector at the CERN LHC. Its goal is to investigate the properties of the strongly interacting matter under the extreme conditions of density and temperature reached in Pb{Pb collisions, with the aim to characterize the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). In this scenario, the upgrade of the ALICE inner tracker targets physics topics in which ALICE can bring a unique contribution to the QGP characterization via the heavy avour probes. The ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN consists of a central barrel, a muon spectrometer and of additional detectors for trigger and event classification purposes. The low transverse momentum threshold of the central barrel gives ALICE a unique opportunity to study the low mass sector of central production at the LHC. First analysis results of meson production in double gap events in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV are presented.

In this paper, an overview of recent $\mathrm D^{0}$, $\mathrm D^{+}$ and $\mathrm D^{*+}$ measurements, performed by ALICE in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}~=~2.76$, 5, 7, 8 and 13 TeV, is reported. The minimum-bias production cross sections, as well as their energy and species dependences, are compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The evolution of the D-meson yields with the event multiplicity is compared to phenomenological models.

Invariant cross sections for neutral pions and eta mesons in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 TeV were measured by the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations describe the pi0 and eta spectra at 0.9 TeV, but overestimate the measured cross sections at 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV. The measured eta/pi0 ratio is consistent with mT scaling at 2.76 TeV. At 7 TeV indications for a violation of mT scaling were found.

Open heavy-flavour hadrons are a powerful tool to investigate the properties of the high-density medium created in heavy-ion collisions at high energies as they come from the hadronization of heavy quarks. The study particle azimuthal anisotropy in heavy-ion collisions provides insight on the collective hydrodynamic expansion of the system and on its equation of state. The measurement of the elliptic flow, $v_2$, of D mesons compared to that of light hadrons is expected to be sensitive to the degree of thermalization of charm quarks within the quark-gluon plasma. The first measurement of D$^0$ meson $v_2$ with the ALICE detector at the LHC will be presented. The preliminary results obtained with the first Pb-Pb run at LHC show a hint of non-zero $v_2$ in $2<p_{\rm t} <5 $ GeV/$c$.

Differential invariant cross sections of light neutral mesons in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV and in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV have been measured up to very high transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$). Central exclusive production at hadron colliders is characterised by the hadronic state produced at or close to midrapidity, and by the two forward scattered protons, or remnants thereof. No particles are produced between the midrapidity system and the forward going beam particles, and such events can hence be identified experimentally by a double-gap topology. We present results of femtoscopic analysis with K0s-K0s, Kch-Kch, p-p, pbar-pbar, p-pbar and lambda-antilambda in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=2.76 TeV and K0s-K0s in pp collisions at sqrt{s}=7 TeV registered by ALICE at the LHC. The femtoscopic radius is extracted from the one-dimensional correlation functions. The analysis reveals that the emission source sizes of pions, kaons and protons measured in heavy-ion collisions exhibit approximate transverse mass scaling which is consistent with hydrodynamic collectivity prediction. The strong electromagnetic fields surrounding the Pb-ions accelerated at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) allow two-photon and photonuclear interactions to be studied in a so far unexplored kinematic regime. The measurement of jets recoiling from a trigger hadron in heavy-ion collisions can be used to understand the properties of the Quark Gluon Plasma. Jet-medium interactions cause jets to lose energy in the medium and may modify the jet structure. We present the measurements related to the spin alignment of $\mathrm{K^{*0}}$ and $\mathrmϕ$ vector mesons at mid-rapidity for Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The second diagonal spin density matrix element ($ρ_{00}$) is measured from the angular distribution of the decay daughters of the vector meson in the decay rest frame, with respect to the event plane and the production plane. A selection of recent ALICE results from pp, p--Pb, Pb--Pb and Xe--Xe collisions taken during the Run 1 and Run 2 phases are summarized in this contribution, and the prospects for the upcoming Run 3 phase are outlined.
The quark model has proven successful in describing the basic building blocks of strongly interacting particles in the Standard Model, where hadronic states consist of quarks and gluons. The ALICE detector is dedicated to studying the properties of hot and dense matter created in heavy-ion collisions. The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider will provide a large sample of charm mesons in addition to its primary goal of B meson production. The large data sample and wide variety of accessible D meson decay modes in a clean experimental environment provide sensitivity to new physics via D meson mixing and CP violation measurements. This contribution briefly describes selected components of the upgrade from Belle to Belle II and KEKB to SuperKEKB, and some prospects for new physics searches in the areas of charm mixing and CP violation.

The intense photon fluxes of relativistic nuclei provide a possibility to study photonuclear and two-photon interactions in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPC) where the nuclei do not overlap and no strong nuclear interactions occur. The production of open heavy-flavour particles was studied in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV using the ALICE detector. The ALICE Collaboration studies the production of J/psi meson in pp collisions at the center-of-mass energies of 2.76 and 7 TeV at mid- and forward-rapidity. Inclusive production cross-sections are presented as a function of the collision energy, rapidity and transverse-momentum. We also show the per-event D-meson yields as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at $\s$ = 7 TeV.
The ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN consists of a central barrel, a muon spectrometer and of additional detectors for trigger and event classification purposes. The low transverse momentum threshold of the central barrel gives ALICE a unique opportunity to study the low mass sector of central production at the LHC. I will report on first analysis results of meson production in double gap events in minimum-bias proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV, and will describe a dedicated double gap trigger for future data taking.
The production of charm-hadrons at midrapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV was recently measured by the ALICE Collaboration. The results show that the baryon-to-meson yield ratios differ from predictions where the hadronisation has been tuned to measurements obtained in $\rm e^{+}e^{-}$ and ep collisions for different charm-baryon species. These observations suggest that the charm fragmentation fractions are not universal and that the baryon-to-meson ratio depends on the collision systems. The ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC has conducted first systematic studies of heavy-flavour hadron production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV. In pp collisions the differential production cross sections of D mesons at mid-rapidity, as well as the cross sections for electrons and muons from semileptonic heavy-flavour hadron decays at mid- and forward-rapidity, respectively, have been measured. The $ρ^0$ is copiously photoproduced in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. In this talk, I will present recent results on $ρ$ photoproduction with ALICE, including cross-section measurements from PbPb and XeXe collisions, including a discussion of the production of high-mass final states that decay to $π^+π^-$, and of neutron production that accompanies $ρ$ photoproduction. I will conclude by presenting some prospects for ALICE in Runs 3 and 4.
