The concept of extended Hamiltonian systems allows the geometrical interpretation of several integrable and superintegrable systems with polynomial first integrals of degree depending on a rational parameter. Until now, the procedure of extension has been applied only in the case of natural Hamiltonians. In this article, we give several examples of application to non-natural Hamiltonians, such as the two point-vortices, the Lotka-Volterra and some quartic in the momenta Hamiltonians, obtaining effectively extended Hamiltonians in some cases and failing in others. We briefly discuss the reasons of these results.
We introduce the cotangent universal hierarchy that extends the so-called universal hierarchy (as for the latter, see e.g. arXiv:nlin/0202008, arXiv:nlin/0312043 and arXiv:nlin/0310036). Then we construct a (2+1)-dimensional double central extension of the cotangent universal hierarchy and show that this extension is bi-Hamiltonian. This yields, as a byproduct, the central extension of the original universal hierarchy.
The technique of "extension" allows to build $(n+1)$-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with a non-trivial polynomial in the momenta first integral of any given degree starting from a $n$-dimensional Hamiltonian satisfying some additional properties. Until now, the application of the method was restricted to integer values of a certain fundamental parameter determining the degree of the additional first integral. In this article we show how this technique can be generalized to any rational value of the same parameter. Several examples are given, among them the anisotropic oscillator and a special…
Bertrand's theorem asserts that any spherically symmetric natural Hamiltonian system in Euclidean 3-space which possesses stable circular orbits and whose bounded trajectories are all periodic is either a harmonic oscillator or a Kepler system. In this paper we extend this classical result to curved spaces by proving that any Hamiltonian on a spherically symmetric Riemannian 3-manifold which satisfies the same conditions as in Bertrand's theorem is superintegrable and given by an intrinsic oscillator or Kepler system. As a byproduct we obtain a wide panoply of new superintegrable Hamiltonian s…
We present in this work the hamiltonian formulation of an octonionic extension for the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The formulation takes into account the non commmutativity and non associativity of the implicit algebra which defines the equation. We also analize the Poisson structure of the hamiltonian formulation. We propose a parametric master Lagrangian which contains the two hamiltonian structures of the integrable octonionic equation.
We show that a recently developed method for generating bounds for the discrete energy states of the non-hermitian $-ix^3$ potential (Handy 2001) is applicable to complex rotated versions of the Hamiltonian. This has important implications for extension of the method in the analysis of resonant states, Regge poles, and general bound states in the complex plane (Bender and Boettcher (1998)).
An extension of the super Korteweg-de Vries integrable system in terms of operator valued functions is obtained. In particular the extension contains the $N=1$ Super KdV and coupled systems with functions valued on a symplectic space. We introduce a Miura transformation for the extended system and obtain its hamiltonian structure. We also obtain an extended Gardner transformation which allows to find an infinite number of conserved quantities of the extended system.
The results from the article [Strachan I.A.B., Szablikowski B.M., Stud. Appl. Math. 133 (2014), 84-117] are extended over consideration of central extensions allowing the introducing of additional independent variables. Algebraic conditions associated to the first-order central extension with respect to additional independent variables are derived. As result $(2+1)$- and, in principle, higher-dimensional multicomponent bi-Hamiltonian systems are constructed. Necessary classification of the central extensions for low-dimensional Novikov algebras is performed and the theory is illustrated by sig…
A harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian augmented by a non-Hermitian \pt-symmetric part and its su(1,1) generalizations, for which a family of positive-definite metric operators was recently constructed, are re-examined in a supersymmetric context. Quasi-Hermitian supersymmetric extensions of such Hamiltonians are proposed by enlarging su(1,1) to a ${\rm su}(1,1/1) \sim {\rm osp}(2/2, \R)$ superalgebra. This allows the construction of new non-Hermitian Hamiltonians related by similarity to Hermitian ones. Some examples of them are reviewed.
For any odd $k$, a connection is established between the dihedral and supersymmetric extensions of the Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz Hamiltonians $H_k$ on a plane. For this purpose, the elements of the dihedral group $D_{2k}$ are realized in terms of two independent pairs of fermionic creation and annihilation operators and some interesting trigonometric identities are demonstrated.
We compute the deficiency spaces of operators of the form $H_A{\hat{\otimes}} I + I{\hat{\otimes}} H_B$, for symmetric $H_A$ and self-adjoint $H_B$. This enables us to construct self-adjoint extensions (if they exist) by means of von Neumann's theory. The structure of the deficiency spaces for this case was asserted already by Ibort, Marmo and Pérez-Pardo, but only proven under the restriction of $H_B$ having discrete, non-degenerate spectrum.
We consider the hamiltonian operator associated with planar sec- tions of infinitely long cylindrical solenoids and with a homogeneous magnetic field in their interior. First, in the Sobolev space $\mathcal H^2$, we characterize all generalized boundary conditions on the solenoid bor- der compatible with quantum mechanics, i.e., the boundary conditions so that the corresponding hamiltonian operators are self-adjoint. Then we study and compare the scattering of the most usual boundary con- ditions, that is, Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin.
We study the self-adjoint extensions of the Hamiltonian operator with symmetric potentials which go to $-\infty$ faster than $-|x|^{2p}$ with $p>1$ as $x\to\pm\infty$. In this extension procedure, one requires the Wronskian between any states in the spectrum to approach to the same limit as $x\to\pm\infty$. Then the boundary terms cancel and the Hamiltonian operator can be shown to be hermitian. Discrete bound states with even and odd parities are obtained. Since the Wronskian is not required to vanish asymptotically, the energy eigenstates could be degenerate. Some explicit examples are given…
We give a detailed account of the Hamiltonian GNH analysis of the parametrized unimodular extension of the Holst action. The purpose of the paper is to derive, through the clear geometric picture furnished by the GNH method, a simple Hamiltonian formulation for this model and explain why it is difficult to arrive at it in other approaches. We will also show how to take advantage of the field equations to anticipate the simple form of the constraints that we find in the paper.
A well known tool in conventional (von Neumann) quantum mechanics is the self-adjoint extension technique for symmetric operators. It is used, e.g., for the construction of Dirac-Hermitian Hamiltonians with point-interaction potentials. Here we reshape this technique to allow for the construction of pseudo-Hermitian ($J$-self-adjoint) Hamiltonians with complex point-interactions. We demonstrate that the resulting Hamiltonians are bijectively related with so called hypermaximal neutral subspaces of the defect Krein space of the symmetric operator. This symmetric operator is allowed to have arbi…
A new class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real spectrum, which are written as a real linear combination of su(2) generators in the form $ H=ωJ_{3}+αJ_{-}+βJ_{+}$, $α\neq β$, is analyzed. The metrics which allows the transition to the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian is established. A pseudo-Hermitian supersymmetic extension of such Hamiltonians is performed. They correspond to the pseudo-Hermitian supersymmetric systems of the boson-phermion oscillators. We extend the supercoherent states formalism to such supersymmetic systems via the pseudo-unitary supersymmetric displacement operator m…
In this paper, we construct the Sato theory including the Hirota bilinear equations and tau function of a new $q$-deformed Toda hierarchy(QTH). Meanwhile the Block type additional symmetry and bi-Hamiltonian structure of this hierarchy are given. From Hamiltonian tau symmetry, we give another definition of tau function of this hierarchy. Afterwards, we extend the $q$-Toda hierarchy to an extended $q$-Toda hierarchy(EQTH) which satisfy a generalized Hirota quadratic equation in terms of generalized vertex operators. The Hirota quadratic equation might have further application in Gromov-Witten t…
The family of Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz Hamiltonians $H_k$ on a plane, corresponding to any positive real value of $k$, is shown to admit a ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric extension of the same kind as that introduced by Freedman and Mende for the Calogero problem and based on an ${\rm osp}(2/2, \R) \sim {\rm su}(1,1/1)$ superalgebra. The irreducible representations of the latter are characterized by the quantum number specifying the eigenvalues of the first integral of motion $X_k$ of $H_k$. Bases for them are explicitly constructed. The ground state of each supersymmetrized Hamiltonian is s…
We generalize the idea of "extension of Hamiltonian systems" -- developed in a series of previous articles -- which allows the explicit construction of Hamiltonian systems with additional non-trivial polynomial first integrals of arbitrarily high degree, as well as the determination of new superintegrable systems from old ones. The present generalization, that we call "modified extension of Hamiltonian systems", produces the third independent first integral for the (complete) Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz (TTW) system, as well as for the caged anisotropic oscillator in dimension two.
In this article we study port-Hamiltonian partial differential equations on certain one-dimensional manifolds. We classify those boundary conditions that give rise to contraction semigroups. As an application we study port-Hamiltonian operators on networks whose edges can have finite or infinite length. In particular, we discuss possibly infinite networks in which the edge lengths can accumulate zero and port-Hamiltonian operators with Hamiltonians that neither are bounded nor bounded away from zero. We achieve this, by first providing a new description for maximal dissipative extensions of sk…
Submanifolds of Frobenius manifolds are studied. In particular, so-called natural submanifolds are defined and, for semi-simple Frobenius manifolds, classified. These carry the structure of a Frobenius algebra on each tangent space, but will, in general, be curved. The induced curvature is studied, a main result being that these natural submanifolds carry a induced pencil of compatible metrics. It is then shown how one may constrain the bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies associated to a Frobenius manifold to live on these natural submanifolds whilst retaining their, now non-local, bi-Hamiltonian struc…
In previous papers we determined necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a class of natural Hamiltonians with non-trivial first integrals of arbitrarily high degree in the momenta. Such Hamiltonians were characterized as (n+1)-dimensional extensions of n-dimensional Hamiltonians on constant-curvature (pseudo-)Riemannian manifolds Q. In this paper, we generalize that approach in various directions, we obtain an explicit expression for the first integrals, holding on the more general case of Hamiltonians on Poisson manifolds, and show how the construction of above is made possib…
In the present paper we deal with the issue of finding the self-adjoint extensions of a $p^4$-corrected Hamiltonian. The importance of this subject lies on the application of the concepts of quantum mechanics to the minimal-length scale scenario which describes an effective theory of quantum gravity. We work in a finite one dimensional interval and we give the explicit $U(4)$ parametrization that leads to the self-adjoint extensions. Once the parametrization is known, we can choose appropriate $U(4)$ matrices to model physical problems. As examples, we discuss the infinite square-well, periodi…
We carry out a detailed analysis of a time dispersive dissipative (TDD) string, using our recently developed conservative and Hamiltonian extensions of TDD systems. This analysis of the TDD string includes, in particular: (i) an explicit construction of its conservative Hamiltonian extension, consisting of the physical string coupled to "hidden strings;" (ii) explicit formulas for energy and momentum densities in the extended system, providing a transparent physical picture accounting precisely for the dispersion and dissipation; (iii) the eigenmodes for the extended string system, which provi…
We derive a classification of the self-adjoint extensions of the three-dimensional Dirac-Coulomb operator in the critical regime of the Coulomb coupling. Our approach is solely based upon the Kre{\uı}n-Višik-Birman extension scheme, or also on Grubb's universal classification theory, as opposite to previous works within the standard von Neumann framework. This let the boundary condition of self-adjointness emerge, neatly and intrinsically, as a multiplicative constraint between regular and singular part of the functions in the domain of the extension, the multiplicative constant giving also im…
In this work, we review two methods used to approach singular Hamiltonians in (2+1) dimensions. Both methods are based on the self-adjoint extension approach. It is very common to find singular Hamiltonians in quantum mechanics, especially in quantum systems in the presence of topological defects, which are usually modelled by point interactions. In general, it is possible to apply some kind of regularization procedure, as the vanishing of the wave function at the location of the singularity, ensuring that the wave function is square-integrable and then can be associated with a physical state.…
We prove absolute continuity for an extended class of two-dimensional magnetic Hamiltonians that were initially studied by A. Iwatsuka. In particular, we add an electric field that is translation invariant in the same direction as the magnetic field is. As an example, we study the effective Hamiltonian for a thin quantum layer in a homogeneous magnetic field.
When a non-hermitian hamiltonian has a certain symmetry, such as the PT pseudo-hermiticity, it is still possible that the hamiltonian has a real spectrum. In this note, by adding an imaginary potential proportional to ip_1p_2 to the hamiltonian of an anisotropic planar oscillator, we construct a PT pseudo-hermitian hamiltonian and obtain its real spectrum. In addition, we find that the reality of the energy spectrum remains when the model is extended to the canonical noncommutative space.
It is natural to investigate if the quantization of an integrable or superintegrable classical Hamiltonian systems is still integrable or superintegrable. We study here this problem in the case of natural Hamiltonians with constants of motion quadratic in the momenta. The procedure of quantization here considered, transforms the Hamiltonian into the Laplace-Beltrami operator plus a scalar potential. In order to transform the constants of motion into symmetry operators of the quantum Hamiltonian, additional scalar potentials, known as quantum corrections, must be introduced, depending on the Ri…
We describe a procedure to construct polynomial in the momenta first integrals of arbitrarily high degree for natural Hamiltonians $H$ obtained as one-dimensional extensions of natural (geodesic) $n$-dimensional Hamiltonians $L$. The Liouville integrability of $L$ implies the (minimal) superintegrability of $H$. We prove that, as a consequence of natural integrability conditions, it is necessary for the construction that the curvature of the metric tensor associated with $L$ is constant. As examples, the procedure is applied to one-dimensional $L$, including and improving earlier results, and …
Wigner's theorem asserts that an isometric (probability conserving) transformation on a quantum state space must be generated by a Hamiltonian that is Hermitian. It is shown that when the Hermiticity condition on the Hamiltonian is relaxed, we obtain the following complex generalisation of Wigner's theorem: a holomorphically projective (complex geodesic-curves preserving) transformation on a quantum state space must be generated by a Hamiltonian that is not necessarily Hermitian.
In this study, firstly, the k-th order extension of complex product manifold is consid- ered. Then the higher order vertical, complete lifts of geometric structures on product manifold to its extended spaces are given. Also higher order lifts of tensor field of type (1,1) are presented. And then extended contact manifolds are defined. Finally higher order vertical and complete lifts of time dependent complex Hamiltonian equations on contact manifold to its extensions are introduced. In conclusion, geometric meaning of Hamiltonian mechanical systems is discussed.
We consider smooth area-preserving flows (also known as locally Hamiltonian flows) on surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$ and study ergodic integrals of smooth observables along the flow trajectories. We show that these integrals display a \emph{power deviation spectrum} and describe the cocycles that lead the pure power behaviour, giving a new proof of results by Forni (Annals 2002) and Bufetov (Annals 2014) and generalizing them to observables which are non-zero at fixed points. This in particular completes the proof of the original formulation of the Kontsevitch-Zorich conjecture. Our proof is base…
We show that for a natural polynomial Hamiltonian system the existence of a single Darboux polynomial (a partial polynomial first integral) is equivalent to the existence of an additional first integral functionally independent with the Hamiltonian function. Moreover, we show that, in a case when the degree of potential is odd, the system does not admit any proper Darboux polynomial, i.e., the only Darboux polynomials are first integrals.
If a higher derivative theory arises from a transformation of variables that involves time derivatives, a tailor-made Hamiltonian formulation is shown to exist. The details and advantages of this elegant Hamiltonian formulation, which differs from the usual Ostrogradsky approach to higher derivative theories, are elaborated for mechanical systems and illustrated for simple examples. Both a canonical space and a set of constraints emerge naturally from the transformation rule for the variables. In other words, the setting for quantization and the procedure for eliminating instabilities arise na…
We derive a one-step extension of the well known Swanson oscillator that describes a specific type of pseudo-Hermitian quadratic Hamiltonian connected to an extended harmonic oscillator model. Our analysis is based on the use of the techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics and address various representations of the ladder operators starting from a seed solution of the harmonic oscillator given in terms of a pseudo-Hermite polynomial. The role of the resulting chain of Hamiltonians related via similarity transformation is then exploited. In the second part we write down a two dimensional …
Physical self-adjoint extensions and their spectra of the simplest one-dimensional Hamiltonian operator in which the mass is constant except for a finite jump at one point of the real axis are correctly found. Some self-adjoint extensions are used to model different kinds of semiconductor heterojunctions within the effective-mass approximation. Their properties and relation to different boundary conditions on envelope wave functions are studied. The limiting case of equal masses (with no mass jump) are reviewed.
We find supersymmetric partners of a family of self-adjoint operators which are self-adjoint extensions of the differential operator $-d^2/dx^2$ on $L^2[-a,a]$, $a>0$, that is, the one dimensional infinite square well. First of all, we classify these self-adjoint extensions in terms of several choices of the parameters determining each of the extensions. There are essentially two big groups of extensions. In one, the ground state has strictly positive energy. On the other, either the ground state has zero or negative energy. In the present paper, we show that each of the extensions belonging t…
An extension of Riewe's fractional Hamiltonian formulation is presented for fractional constrained systems. The conditions of consistency of the set of constraints with equations of motion are investigated. Three examples of fractional constrained systems are analyzed in details.
We study the stationary problem of a charged Dirac particle in (2+1) dimensions in the presence of a uniform magnetic field B and a singular magnetic tube of flux Phi = 2 pi kappa/e. The rotational invariance of this configuration implies that the subspaces of definite angular momentum l+1/2 are invariant under the action of the Hamiltonian H. We show that, for l different from the integer part of kappa, the restriction of H to these subspaces, H_l is essentially self-adjoint, while for l equal to the integer part of kappa, H_l admits a one-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions (SAE). In…
We consider singular self-adjoint extensions for the Schrödinger operator of spin-$1/2$ particle in one dimension. The corresponding boundary conditions at a singular point are obtained. There are boundary conditions with the spin-flip mechanism, i.e. for these point-like interactions the spin operator does not commute with the Hamiltonian. One of these extensions is the analog of zero-range $δ$-potential. The other one is the analog of so called $δ^{(1)}$-interaction. We show that in physical terms such contact interactions can be identified as the point-like analogues of Rashba Hamiltonian (…
A supersymmetric extension of the Hunter-Saxton equation is constructed. We present its bi-Hamiltonian structure and show that it arises geometrically as a geodesic equation on the space of superdiffeomorphisms of the circle that leave a point fixed endowed with a right-invariant metric.
This work is devoted to review the modern geometric description of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms of the Hamilton--Jacobi theory. The relation with the "classical" Hamiltonian approach using canonical transformations is also analyzed. Furthermore, a more general framework for the theory is also briefly explained. It is also shown how, from this generic framework, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian cases of the theory for dynamical systems are recovered, and how the model can be extended to other types of physical systems, such as higher-order dynamical systems and (first-order) classica…
Consider the ensemble of Gaussian random potentials $\{V^L(q)\}_{L=1}^\infty$ on the $d$-dimensional torus where, essentially, $V^L(q)$ is a real-valued trigonometric polynomial of degree $L$ whose coefficients are independent standard normal variables. Our main result ensures that, with a probability tending to 1 as $L\to\infty$, the dynamical system associated with the natural Hamiltonian function defined by this random potential, $H^L:=\frac12|p|^2+ V^L(q)$, exhibits a number of chaotic regions which coexist with a positive-volume set of invariant tori. In particular, these systems are typi…
We prove that Nagaoka's theorem, that the large-$U$ Hubbard model with exactly one hole is ferromagnetic, holds for any balanced Hamiltonian. Simply put, if a positive bond encodes friendship and a negative bond encodes enmity, then balance implies when that enemy of one's enemy is one's friend. We argue that, in itinerant electron systems, a balanced Hamiltonian, rather than bipartite lattice, defines an unfrustrated system. The proof is valid for multi-orbital models with arbitrary two-orbital interactions provided that no exchange interactions are antiferromagnetic: a class of models includ…
We extend the $CPT$ theorem to quantum field theories with non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and unstable states. Our derivation is a quite minimal one as it requires only the time independent evolution of scalar products, invariance under complex Lorentz transformations, and a non-standard but nonetheless perfectly legitimate interpretation of charge conjugation as an anti-linear operator. The first of these requirements does not force the Hamiltonian to be Hermitian. Rather, it forces its eigenvalues to either be real or to appear in complex conjugate pairs, forces the eigenvectors of such conjugat…
We propose a fairly simple and natural extension of Stollmann's lemma to correlated random variables. This extension allows (just as the original Stollmann's lemma does) to obtain Wegner-type estimates even in some problems of spectral analysis of random operators where the Wegner's lemma is inapplicable (e.g. for multi-particle Hamiltonians).
The family of Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz (TTW) Hamiltonians $H_k$ on a plane, corresponding to any positive real value of $k$, is shown to admit another ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric extension than that previously introduced by the present author. This new extension is of the same kind as that considered by D'Hoker and Vinet in the study of magnetic monopoles and is characterized by the fact that all the irreducible representations of the corresponding ${\rm osp}(2/2, \R)$ dynamical superalgebra are atypical lowest-weight state ones. The new supersymmetric Hamiltonians may be referred to as …
By taking the Weyl equation with external electro-magnetic potentials as the simplest representative for a system of PDOs, we give a new method of treating non-commutativity of coefficients matrices. More precisely, we construct a Fourier Integral Operator with``matrix-like phase and amplitude'' which gives a parametrix for that Weyl equation. To do this, we first reduce the usual matrix valued Weyl equation on the Euclidian space to the one on the superspace, called the super Weyl equation. Using analysis on superspace, we may associate a function, called the super Hamiltonian function, corre…
In this paper, we present a mathematically rigorous quantum-mechanical treatment of a one-dimensional motion of a particle in the Calogero potential $αx^{-2}$. Although the problem is quite old and well-studied, we believe that our consideration, based on a uniform approach to constructing a correct quantum-mechanical description for systems with singular potentials and/or boundaries, proposed in our previous works, adds some new points to its solution. To demonstrate that a consideration of the Calogero problem requires mathematical accuracy, we discuss some "paradoxes" inherent in the "naive…
In this study we develop a systematic procedure to construct a Poisson operator that describes the dynamics of a three dimensional nonholonomic system. Instead of reducing by symmetry the antisymmetric operator that links the energy gradient to the velocity on the tangent bundle, the system is embedded in a larger space. Here, the extended antisymmetric operator, which preserves the original equations of motion, satisfies the Jacobi identity in a conformal fashion. Thus, a Poisson operator can be obtained by a further time reparametrization. Such Poissonization does not rely on the specific fo…
We study twisted products $H=α^rH_r$ of natural autonomous Hamiltonians $H_r$, each one depending on a separate set, called here separate $r$-block, of variables. We show that, when the twist functions $α^r$ are a row of the inverse of a block-Stäckel matrix, the dynamics of $H$ reduces to the dynamics of the $H_r$, modified by a scalar potential depending only on variables of the corresponding $r$-block. It is a kind of partial separation of variables. We characterize this block-separation in an invariant way by writing in block-form classical results of Stäckel separation of variables. We cl…
In this work we introduce contact Hamiltonian mechanics, an extension of symplectic Hamiltonian mechanics, and show that it is a natural candidate for a geometric description of non-dissipative and dissipative systems. For this purpose we review in detail the major features of standard symplectic Hamiltonian dynamics and show that all of them can be generalized to the contact case.
We consider formal quantum hamiltonian of a charged particle on the Poincaré disk in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic vortex and a uniform magnetic field. It is shown that this hamiltonian admits a four-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions. Its resolvent and the density of states are calculated for natural values of the extension parameters.
