We examine the behaviour of a charged particle in a two-dimensional confining potential, in the presence of a magnetic field. The confinement serves to remove the otherwise infinite degeneracy, but additional ingredients are required to produce sensible results. We treat both circular and square geometries, and in the latter we explicitly demonstrate the gauge invariance of the energy levels and wave function amplitudes. Both bulk states and edge states are examined, and in the latter case, with sufficiently high quantum numbers we achieve significant differences in the square and circular geometries. Results are achieved using straightforward matrix mechanics, in a manner that is accessible to novices in the field.
We present the results of numerical calculations of the groundstates of weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensates containing large numbers of vortices. Our calculations show that these groundstates appear to be close to uniform triangular vortex lattices. However, slight deviations from a uniform triangular lattice have dramatic consequences on the overall particle distribution. In particular, we demonstrate that the overall particle distribution averaged on a lengthscale large compared to the vortex lattice constant is well approximated by a Thomas-Fermi profile.
It is quite easy to control spin polarization and spin direction of a system via magnetic fields. However, there is no such a direct and efficient way to manipulate valley pseudospin degree of freedom. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that it is possible to realize valley polarization and valley inversion in graphene by using both strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields and real magnetic fields. The pseudomagnetic fields, which are quite different from real magnetic fields, pointing in opposite directions at the two distinct valleys of graphene. Therefore, coexistence of the pseudomagnetic fie…
In two-dimensional hole systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells, where the heavy- and light- hole states are close in energy, we observe a very unusual crossing of the lowest two Landau levels as the sample is tilted in magnetic field. At a magic tilt angle $θ\simeq 34^{\circ}$, which surprisingly is independent of the well-width or hole density, in a large filling factor range near $ν=1$ the lowest two levels are nearly degenerate as evinced by the presence of two-component quantum Hall states. Remarkably, a quantum Hall state is seen at $ν=1$, consistent with a \textit{correlated} $Ψ_{11…
Measurements in clean two-dimensional electron systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells in which two electric subbands are occupied reveal an unexpected rotation of the orientation of the stripe phase observed at a half-filled Landau level. Remarkably, the reorientation is sensitive to the spin of the half-filled Landau level and the symmetry of the charge distribution in the quantum well.
A comprehensive understanding of quantum Hall edge transmission, especially the hole-conjugate of a Laughlin state such as a $2/3$ state, is critical for advancing fundamental quantum Hall physics and enhancing the design of quantum Hall edge interferometry. In this study, we report a robust intermediate $2h/e^2$ resistance quantization in a quantum point contact (QPC) when the bulk is set at the fractional filling $2/3$ quantum Hall state. Our results suggest the occurrence of two equilibration processes. First, the co-propagating $1/3$ edges moving along a soft QPC arm confining potential fu…
We investigate the integer quantum Hall effect in Cd3As2 thin films under conditions of strong to moderate quantum confinement (thicknesses of 10 nm, 12 nm, 15 nm). In all the films, we observe the integer quantum Hall effect in the spin-polarized lowest Landau level (filling factor ν = 1) and at spin-degenerate higher index Landau levels with even filling factors (ν = 2,4,6). With increasing quantum confinement, we also observe a lifting of the Landau level spin degeneracy at ν = 3, manifest as the emergence of an anomaly in the longitudinal and Hall resistivity. Tight-binding calculations sh…
Using the recently developed approach to quantum Hall physics based on Newton-Cartan geometry, we consider the hydrodynamics of an interacting system on the lowest Landau level. We rephrase the non-relativistic fluid equations of motion in a manner that manifests the spacetime diffeomorphism invariance of the underlying theory. In the massless (or lowest Landau level) limit, the fluid obeys a force-free constraint which fixes the charge current. An entropy current analysis further constrains the energy response, determining four transverse response functions in terms of only two: an energy mag…
We observe fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at the even-denominator Landau level filling factor $ν=1/2$ in two-dimensional hole systems confined to GaAs quantum wells of width 30 to 50 nm and having bilayer-like charge distributions. The $ν=1/2$ FQHE is stable when the charge distribution is symmetric and only in a range of intermediate densities, qualitatively similar to what is seen in two-dimensional electron systems confined to approximately twice wider GaAs quantum wells. Despite the complexity of the hole Landau level structure, originating from the coexistence and mixing of the hea…

We show how snake-orbit states which run along a magnetic edge can be confined electrically. We consider a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined into a quantum wire, subjected to a strong perpendicular and steplike magnetic field $B/-B$. Close to this magnetic step new, spatially confined bound states arise as a result of the lateral confinement and the magnetic field step. The number of states, with energy below the first Landau level, increases as $B$ becomes stronger or as the wire width becomes larger. These bound states can be understood as an interference between two counter-propa…
We investigate the ground state properties of a two-dimensional electron gas in the lowest Landau level using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group. The electron gas is confined to a cylinder with a strong magnetic field perpendicular to the surface. For a thin cylinder, the ground state is for generic filling factors a charge density wave state, however, at $ν=1/2$ a homogeneous and apparently gapless ground state is found and particle and hole excitations are studied.
Thermal measurements on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure reveal that the state of the confined two-dimensional electrons dramatically affects the nuclear-spin diffusion near Landau level filling factor ν=1. The experiments provide quantitative evidence that the sharp peak in the temperature dependence of heat capacity near ν=1 is due to an enhanced nuclear-spin diffusion from the GaAs quantum wells into the AlGaAs barriers. We discuss the physical origin of this enhancement in terms the possible Skyrme solid-liquid phase transition.
In previous papers we solved the Landau problems, indexed by 2M, for a particle on the ``superflag'' S U (2|1)/[U (1) x U (1)], the M = 0 case being equivalent to the Landau problem for a particle on the ``supersphere'' S U (2|1)/[U (1|1)]. Here we solve these models in the planar limit. For M = 0 we have a particle on the complex superplane C(1|1) ; its Hilbert space is the tensor product of that of the Landau model with the 4-state space of a ``fermionic'' Landau model. Only the lowest level is ghost-free, but for M > 0 there are no ghosts in the first [2M ]+1 levels. When 2M is an integer, …
Polarization-resolved magneto-luminescence, together with simultaneous magneto-transport measurements, have been performed on a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined in CdTe quantum well in order to determine the spin-splitting of fully occupied electronic Landau levels, as a function of the magnetic field (arbitrary Landau level filling factors) and temperature. The spin splitting, extracted from the energy separation of the σ+ and σ- transitions, is composed of the ordinary Zeeman term and a many-body contribution which is shown to be driven by the spin-polarization of the 2DEG. It is…
Single-component quantum gas confined in a harmonic potential, but otherwise isolated, is considered. From the invariance of the system of the gas under a displacement-type transformation, it is shown that the center of mass oscillates along a classical trajectory of a harmonic oscillator. It is also shown that this harmonic motion of the center has, in fact, been implied by Kohn's theorem. If there is no interaction between the atoms of the gas, the system in a time-independent isotropic potential of frequency $ν_c$ is invariant under a squeeze-type unitary transformation, which gives collect…
Measurements in very low disorder two-dimensional electrons confined to relatively wide GaAs quantum well samples with tunable density reveal reentrant $ν=1$ integer quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level near filling factors $ν=4/5$ and 6/5. These states are not seen at low densities and become more prominent with increasing density and in wider wells. Our data suggest a close competition between different types of Wigner crystal states near these fillings. We also observe an intriguing disappearance and reemergence of the $ν=4/5$ fractional quantum Hall effect with increasing density…
We present a theoretical study of the energy levels in a parabolically confined quantum dot in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI). The features of some low-lying states in various strengths of the SOI are examined at finite magnetic fields. The presence of a magnetic field enhances the possibility of the spin polarization and the SOI leads to different energy dependence on magnetic fields applied. Furthermore, in high magnetic fields, the spectra of low-lying states show basic features of Fock-Darwin levels as well as Landau levels.
We report electrical transport measurements in a tilted magnetic field on a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system confined at the MgZnO/ZnO heterointerface. The observation of multiple crossing events of spin-resolved Landau levels (LLs) enables the mapping of the sequence of electronic states. We further measure the renormalization of electron spin susceptibility at zero field and the susceptibility dependence on the electron spin polarization. The latter manifests the deviation from the Pauli spin susceptibility. As the result, the crossing of spin-resolved LLs shifts to smaller tilt…
It was shown recently that Weyl fermions in a superconducting vortex lattice can condense into Landau levels. Here we study the chiral magnetic effect in the lowest Landau level: The appearance of an equilibrium current $I$ along the lines of magnetic flux $Φ$, due to an imbalance between Weyl fermions of opposite chirality. A universal contribution $dI/dΦ=(e/h)^2μ$ (at equilibrium chemical potential $μ$ relative to the Weyl point) appears when quasiparticles of one of the two chiralities are confined in vortex cores. The confined states are charge-neutral Majorana fermions.
Quantum phases of electrons in the filling factor range $2 \leqν\leq 3$ are probed by the weak optical emission from the partially populated second Landau level and spin wave measurements. Observations of optical emission include a multiplet of sharp peaks that exhibit a strong filling factor dependence. Spin wave measurements by resonant inelastic light scattering probe breaking of spin rotational invariance and are used to link this optical emission with collective phases of electrons. A remarkably rapid interplay between emission peak intensities manifests phase competition in the second La…
We describe a new regime of magnetotransport in two dimensional electron systems in the presence of a narrow potential barrier imposed by external gates. In such systems, the Landau level states, confined to the barrier region in strong magnetic fields, undergo a deconfinement transition as the field is lowered. We present transport measurements showing Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations which, in the unipolar regime, abruptly disappear when the strength of the magnetic field is reduced below a certain critical value. This behavior is explained by a semiclassical analysis of the transformati…
Magnetotransport in a laterally confined two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) can exhibit modified scattering channels owing to a tilted Hall potential. Transitions of electrons between Landau levels with shifted guiding centers can be accomplished through a Zener tunneling mechanism, and make a significant contribution to the magnetoresistance. A remarkable oscillation effect in weak field magnetoresistance has been observed in high-mobility 2DEGs in GaAs-AlGa$_{0.3}$As$_{0.7}$ heterostructures, and can be well explained by the Zener mechanism.
Via measurements of commensurability features near Landau filling factor $ν=1/2$, we probe the shape of the Fermi contour for hole-flux composite fermions confined to a wide GaAs quantum well. The data reveal that the composite fermions are strongly influenced by the characteristics of the Landau level in which they are formed. In particular, their Fermi contour is $\textit{warped}$ when their Landau level originates from a hole band with significant warping.
We show that the thin films of Weyl semimetals have a regime of parameters in which they develop very flat Landau bands under strong magnetic fields. Addressing the case of thin films in a perpendicular magnetic field, we observe that two different types of Landau states may arise depending on whether the line connecting a pair of opposite Weyl nodes is parallel or perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. In the latter instance, we show that the flat Landau bands are made of states peaked at the two faces of the thin film. When the line connecting the Weyl nodes is parallel to the…
The inversion layer of p-InSb(110) obtained by Cs adsorption of 1.8 % of a monolayer is used to probe the Landau level wave functions within smooth potential valleys by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy at 14 T. The nodal structure becomes apparent as a double peak structure of each spin polarized first Landau level, while the zeroth Landau level exhibits a single peak per spin level only. The real space data show single rings of the valley-confined drift states for the zeroth Landau level and double rings for the first Landau level. The result is reproduced by a recursive Green's function algo…
Single particle basis functions for composite fermions are obtained from which many-composite fermion states confined to the lowest electronic Landau level can be constructed in the standard manner, i.e., by building Slater determinants. This representation enables a Monte Carlo study of systems containing a large number of composite fermions, yielding new quantitative and qualitative information. The ground state energy and the gaps to charged and neutral excitations are computed for a number of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states, earlier off-limits to a quantitative investigation. …
Motivated by recent transport experiments, we theoretically study the quantum Hall effect in topological semimetal films. Owing to the confinement effect, the bulk subbands originating from the chiral Landau levels establish energy gaps that have quantized Hall conductance and can be observed in relatively thick films. We find that the quantum Hall state is strongly anisotropic for different confinement directions not only due to the presence of the surface states but also because of the bulk chiral Landau levels. As a result, we re-examine the quantum Hall effect from the surface Fermi arcs a…
This work reports the three-band structure associated with a Lieb lattice with arbitrary nearest and next-nearest neighbors hopping interactions. For specific configurations, the system admits a flat band located between two dispersion bands. Three inequivalent Dirac valleys are identified so that the quasi-particles are effectively described by the spin-1 Dirac-type equation. Under external homogeneous magnetic fields, the Landau levels are exactly determined as the third-order polynomial equation for the energy can be solved using Cardano's formula. It is also shown that an external anti-sym…
Electrical conduction is studied along parabolically confined quasi-one dimensional channels, in the framework of a revised linear-response theory, for elastic scattering. For zero magnetic field an explicit multichannel expression for the conductance is obtained that agrees with those of the literature. A similar but new multichannel expression is obtained in the presence of a magnetic field B||z perpendicular to the channel along the x axis. An explicit connection is made between the characteristic time for the tunnel-scattering process and the transmission and reflection coefficients that a…
Magnetic states of the electron gas confined in modulation-doped core-shell nanowires are calculated for a transverse field of arbitrary strength and orientation. Magneto-conductance is predicted within the Landauer approach. The modeling takes fully into account the radial material modulation, the prismatic symmetry and the doping profile of realistic GaAs/AlGaAs devices within an envelope-function approach, and electron-electron interaction is included in a mean-field self-consistent approach. Calculations show that in the low free-carrier density regime, magnetic states can be described in …
The chiral two-dimensional electron gas in Landau levels $\left\vert N\right\vert >0$ of a Bernal-stacked graphene bilayer has a valley-pseudospin Ising quantum Hall ferromagnetic behavior at odd filling factors $ν_{N}=1,3$ of these fourfold degenerate states. At zero interlayer electrical bias, the ground state at these fillings is spin polarized and electrons occupy one valley or the other while a finite electrical bias produces a series of valley pseudospin-flip transitions. In this work, we extend the Ising behavior to chirally-stacked multilayer graphene and discuss the hysteretic behavio…
We study the confinement of charged Dirac particles in 3+1 space-time due to the presence of a constant and tilted magnetic field. We focus on the nature of the solutions of the Dirac equation and on how they depend on the choice of vector potential that gives rise to the magnetic field. In particular, we select a "Landau gauge" such that the momentum is conserved along the direction of the vector potential yielding spinor wavefunctions, which are localized in the plane containing the magnetic field and normal to the vector potential. These wave functions are expressed in terms of the Hermite …
When an energy gap is induced in monolayer graphene the valley degeneracy is broken and the energy spectrum of a confined system such as a quantum dot, becomes rather complex exhibiting many irregular level crossings and small energy spacings which are very sensitive to the applied magnetic field. Here we study the energy spectrum of a graphene quantum dot that is formed between Landau levels, and show that for the appropriate potential well the dot energy spectrum in the first Landau gap can have a simple pattern with energies coming from one of the two valleys only. This part of the spectrum…
Optical polarimetry measurements of the orientational order of a discotic liquid crystal based on a pyrene derivative and confined in parallel-aligned nanochannels of monolithic mesoporous alumina, silica, and silicon as a function of temperature, channel radius (3 - 22 nm) and surface chemistry reveal a competition of radial and axial columnar order. The evolution of the orientational order parameter of the confined systems is continuous, in contrast to the discontinuous transition in the bulk. For channel radii larger than 10 nm we suggest several, alternative defect structures, which are co…
An effective field theory of composite Dirac fermions was proposed by Son [Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)] as a theory of the half-filled Landau level with explicit particle-hole symmetry. We compute the electromagnetic response of this Son-Dirac theory on the level of the random phase approximation (RPA), where we pay particular attention to the effect of an additional composite-fermion dipole term that is needed to restore Galilean invariance. We find that once this dipole correction is taken into account, spurious interband transitions and collective modes that are present in the response of…
It was recently pointed out that topological liquid phases arising in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) are not required to be rotationally invariant, as most variational wavefunctions proposed to date have been. Instead, they possess a geometric degree of freedom corresponding to a shear deformation that acts like an intrinsic metric. We apply this idea to a system with an anisotropic band mass, as is intrinsically the case in many-valley semiconductors such as AlAs and Si, or in isotropic systems like GaAs in the presence of a tilted magnetic field, which breaks the rotational invari…
A generalized algebra of noncommutative coordinates and momenta embracing non-Abelian gauge fields is proposed. Through a two-dimensional realization of this algebra for a gauge field including electromagnetic vector potential and two spin-orbit-like coupling terms, a Dirac-like Hamiltonian in noncommutative coordinates is introduced. We established the corresponding energy spectrum and from that we derived the relation between the energy level quantum number and the magnetic field at the maxima of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. By tuning the non-commutativity parameter θin terms of the value…
