Polarization-resolved magneto-luminescence, together with simultaneous magneto-transport measurements, have been performed on a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined in CdTe quantum well in order to determine the spin-splitting of fully occupied electronic Landau levels, as a function of the magnetic field (arbitrary Landau level filling factors) and temperature. The spin splitting, extracted from the energy separation of the σ+ and σ- transitions, is composed of the ordinary Zeeman term and a many-body contribution which is shown to be driven by the spin-polarization of the 2DEG. It is argued that both these contributions result in a simple, rigid shift of Landau level ladders with opposite spins.
We propose a novel method to manipulate the state of a single electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD). The manipulation is achieved by tunnel coupling a QD, labeled $L$, and occupied with an electron to an adjacent QD, labeled $R$, which is not occupied by an electron but having an energy linearly varying in time. We identify a parameter regime in which a complete population transfer between the spin eigenstates $|L\uparrow\rangle$ and $|L\downarrow\rangle$ is achieved without occupying the adjacent QD. This method is convenient due to the fact that manipulation can be done electrica…
Motivated by recent realizations of qubits with a readout by macroscopic quantum tunneling in a Josephson junction, we study the problem of barrier penetration in presence of coupling to a spin-${1\over 2}$ system. It is shown that when the diabatic potentials for fixed spin intersect in the barrier region, Landau- -Zener transitions lead to an enhancement of the tunneling rate. The effect of these spin flips in imaginary time is in qualitative agreement with experimental observations.
We investigate the charge carrier dynamics in bilayer graphene subject to monochromatic laser irradiation within the Landau level quantization regime. Even though the radiation field does not lift the energy degeneracy of the lowest Landau levels (LLs), it nevertheless has a strong effect on the photoinduced pseudospin polarization response for higher LLs ($n\ge2$). Our results show that the photoinduced bandgaps lead to a finite response of the averaged pseudospin polarization with nontrivial oscillating behavior. It is shown that the contribution from these higher LL transitions turns out to…
We consider a bi-layer electronic system at a total Landau level filling factor nu =1, and focus on the transition from the regime of weak inter-layer coupling to that of the strongly coupled (1,1,1) phase (or ''quantum Hall ferromagnet''). Making the assumption that in the transition region the system is made of puddles of the (1,1,1) phase embedded in a bulk of the weakly coupled state, we show that the transition is accompanied by a strong increase in longitudinal Coulomb drag, that reaches a maximum of approximately $h/2e^{2}$. In that regime the longitudinal drag is increased with decreas…
We report the observation of an isolated charged impurity in graphene and present direct evidence of the close connection between the screening properties of a 2D electron system and the influence of the impurity on its electronic environment. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and Landau level spectroscopy we demonstrate that in the presence of a magnetic field the strength of the impurity can be tuned by controlling the occupation of Landau-level states with a gate-voltage. At low occupation the impurity is screened becoming essentially invisible. Screening diminishes as states are filled u…
Measurements in clean two-dimensional electron systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells in which two electric subbands are occupied reveal an unexpected rotation of the orientation of the stripe phase observed at a half-filled Landau level. Remarkably, the reorientation is sensitive to the spin of the half-filled Landau level and the symmetry of the charge distribution in the quantum well.
The energy spectrum for an ultracold rotating Bose gas in a harmonic trap is calculated exactly for small systems, allowing the atoms to occupy several Landau levels. Two vortex-like states and two strongly correlated states (the Pfaffian and Laughlin) are considered in detail. In particular, their critical rotation frequencies and energy gaps are determined as a function of particle number, interaction strength, and the number of Landau levels occupied (up to three). For the vortex-like states, the Lowest Landau level (LLL) approximation is justified only if the interaction strength decreases…
Coulomb drag between two parallel two dimensional electron gases has been measured at high magnetic fields in samples with two different layer spacings. As the layer filling factor deviates from nu=1/2, we find that the magnitude of the drag is enhanced quadratically with Delta nu = nu - 1/2, and the curvature of the enhancement is insensitive to both the sign of Delta nu and the spacing between the layers. Our results suggest that the enhancement is not due to non-perturbative interlayer correlations.
Strong resonant enhancements of inelastic light scattering from the long wavelength inter-Landau level magnetoplasmon and the intra-Landau level spin wave excitations are seen for the fractional quantum Hall state at $ν= 1/3$. The energies of the sharp peaks (FWHM $\lesssim 0.2meV$) in the profiles of resonant enhancement of inelastic light scattering intensities coincide with the energies of photoluminescence bands assigned to negatively charged exciton recombination. To interpret the observed enhancement profiles, we propose three-step light scattering mechanisms in which the intermediate re…
Particle-hole symmetry breaking in the fractional quantum Hall effect has recently been studied both theoretically and experimentally with most works focusing on non-Abelian states in the second electronic Landau level. In this work, we theoretically investigate particle-hole symmetry breaking of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level under the influence of the realistic effect of a finite magnetic field strength. A finite magnetic field induces Landau level and sub-band mixing which are known to break particle-hole symmetry at the level of the Hamiltonian. We…
A brief summary of the emerging evidence for a new class of collective states of two-dimensional electrons in partially occupied excited Landau levels is presented. Among the most dramatic phenomena described are the large anisotropies of the resistivity observed at very low temperatures near half-filling of the third and higher Landau levels and the non-linear character of the re-entrant integer quantized Hall states in the flanks of the same levels. The degree to which these findings support recent theoretical predictions of charge density wave ground states is discussed and a preliminary co…
We report a new "dip" effect in the Hall resistance, R_{xy}, of a Si metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor in the quantum Hall effect regime. With increasing magnetic field, the Hall resistance moves from the plateau at Landau filling factor ν=6 directly to the plateau at ν=4, skipping the plateau at ν=5. However, when the filling factor approaches ν=5, the Hall resistance sharply "dives" to the value 1/5(h/e^2) characteristic of the ν=5 plateau, and then returns to 1/4(h/e^2). This is interpreted as a manifestation of the oscillating exchange enhancement of the valley splitting wh…
We report on the fractional quantum Hall states of germanene and silicene where one expects a strong spin-orbit interaction. This interaction causes an enhancement of the electron-electron interaction strength in one of the Landau levels corresponding to the valence band of the system. This enhancement manifests itself as an increase of the fractional quantum Hall effect gaps compared to that in graphene and is due to the spin-orbit induced coupling of the Landau levels of the conduction and valence bands, which modifies the corresponding wave functions and the interaction within a single leve…
Thermal measurements on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure reveal that the state of the confined two-dimensional electrons dramatically affects the nuclear-spin diffusion near Landau level filling factor ν=1. The experiments provide quantitative evidence that the sharp peak in the temperature dependence of heat capacity near ν=1 is due to an enhanced nuclear-spin diffusion from the GaAs quantum wells into the AlGaAs barriers. We discuss the physical origin of this enhancement in terms the possible Skyrme solid-liquid phase transition.
We study theoretically the low-temperature phases of a two-component atomic Fermi gas with attractive s-wave interactions under conditions of rapid rotation. We find that, in the extreme quantum limit, when all particles occupy the lowest Landau level, the normal state is unstable to the formation of "charge" density wave (CDW) order. At lower rotation rates, when many Landau levels are occupied, we show that the low-temperature phases can be supersolids, involving both CDW and superconducting order.
We report tilted-field transport measurements in the quantum-Hall regime in an InAs/In_0.75Ga_0.25As/In_0.75Al_0.25As quantum well. We observe anti-crossings of spin-split Landau levels, which suggest a mixing of spin states at Landau level coincidence. We propose that the level repulsion is due to the presence of spin-orbit and of band-non-parabolicity terms which are relevant in narrow-gap systems. Furthermore, electron-electron interaction is significant in our structure, as demonstrated by the large values of the interaction-induced enhancement of the electronic g-factor.
We report measurements of microwave spectra of two-dimensional electron systems hosted in dilute Al alloy, Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As, for a range of Landau level fillings, $ν$, around 1. For $ν>0.8$ or $ν<1.2$, the samples exhibit a microwave resonance whose frequency decreases as $ν$ moves away from 1. A resonance with this behavior is the signature of solids of quasiparticles or -holes in the partially occupied Landau level, which was previously seen in ultralow disorder samples. For $ν<0.8$ down to as low as $ν=0.54$, a resonance in the spectra is still present in the Al alloy-disordered samples, …
Low-energy Landau levels of AB-stacked zigzag graphene ribbons in the presence of a uniform perpendicular magnetic field (\textbf{B}) are investigated by the Peierls coupling tight-binding model. State energies and associated wave functions are dominated by the \textbf{B}-field strength and the $k_z$-dependent interribbon interactions. The occupied valence bands are asymmetric to the unoccupied conduction bands about the Fermi level. Many doubly degenerate Landau levels and singlet curving magnetobands exist along $k_x$ and $k_z$ directions, respectively. Such features are directly reflected i…
We report on a striking departure from the canonical step sequence of quantized conductance in a ballistic, quasi-one-dimensional metallic channel. Ideally, in such a structure, each sub-band population contributes its Landauer conductance quantum independently of the rest. In a picture based exclusively on coherent single-carrier transmission, unitary back-scattering can lower a conductance step below ideal, but it is absolutely impossible for it to enhance the ideal Landauer conductance of a sub-band. Precisely such an anomalous and robust nonlinear enhancement has already been observed over…
The spin-dependent dynamical blockade was investigated in a lateral quantum dot in a magnetic field. Spin-polarized edge channels in the two-dimensional leads and the spatial distribution of Landau orbitals in the dot modulate the tunnel coupling of the quantum dot level spectrum. In a measurement of the electron shot noise we observe a pattern of super-Poissonian noise which is correlated to the spin-dependent competition between different transport channels.
Charge density waves are thought to be common in two-dimensional electron systems in quantizing magnetic fields. Such phases are formed by the quasiparticles of the topmost occupied Landau level when it is partially filled. One class of charge density wave phases can be described as electron solids. In weak magnetic fields (at high Landau levels) solids with many particles per unit cell - bubble phases - predominate. In strong magnetic fields (at the lowest Landau level) only crystals with one particle per unit cell - Wigner crystals - can form. Experimental identification of these phases is f…
We consider a small itinerant ferromagnet exposed to an external magnetic field and strongly driven by a thermally induced spin current. For this model, we derive the quasi-classical equations of motion for the magnetization where the effects of a dynamical non-equilibrium distribution function are taken into account self-consistently. We obtain the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation supplemented by a spin-transfer torque term of Slonczewski form. We identify a regime of persistent precessions in which we find an enhancement of the thermoelectric current by the pumping current.
Quantum-mechanical systems having two discrete energy levels are ubiquitous in nature. For crossing energy levels, depending on how fast they approach each other, there is a possibility of a transition between them. This phenomenon is known as Landau-Zener tunneling and it forms the physical basis of the Zener diode, for example. The traditional treatment of the Landau-Zener tunneling, however, ignores quantum-mechanical interference. Here we report an observation of phase-sensitive interference between consecutive Landau-Zener tunneling attempts in an artificial two-level system formed by a C…
Using a sensitive DC torque magnetometer we measure the orbital magnetization by sweeping the density at fixed magnetic fields on GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructures. At low temperatures strong nonequilibrium magnetization signals dominate the data. In literature the observation of nonequilibrium signals are often associated with eddy currents generated by sweeping the magnetic field. The elimination of a changing magnetic field then poses a question regarding the origin of these signals. Our data suggests another source of nonequilibrium magnetization potentially due to the change of area occupied b…
Magneto-transport measurements in a wide GaAs quantum well in which we can tune the Fermi energy ($E_F$) to lie in different Landau levels of the two occupied electric subbands reveal a remarkable pattern for the appearance and disappearance of fractional quantum Hall states at $ν$ = 10/3, 11/3, 13/3, 14/3, 16/3, and 17/3. The data provide direct evidence that the $q/3$ states are stable and strong even at such high fillings as long as $E_F$ lies in a ground-state (N=0) Landau level of either of the two electric subbands, regardless of whether that level belongs to the symmetric or the anti-sy…
The linear response of two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field in the presence of a spatially dependent classically smooth electrostatic potential is studied theoretically, by application of the Kubo formula for nonlocal conductivity tensor. In the classical transport regime, a general expression for the conductivity tensor through the correlation functions of the homogeneous electron gas is derived. The quantum transport regime, when Landau quantization is essential, is studied for the case of unidirectional periodic potential modulation. Apart from the Shubnikov-de Haa…
We propose the use of resonant tunneling as a route to enhance the spin-transfer torque switching characteristics of magnetic tunnel junctions. The proposed device structure is a resonant tunneling magnetic tunnel junction based on a MgO-semiconductor heterostructure sandwiched between a fixed magnet and a free magnet. Using the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism coupled self consistently with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation, we demonstrate enhanced tunnel magneto-resistance characteristics as well as lower switching voltages in comparison with traditional trilayer dev…
We derive a chiral kinetic theory with Landau level basis, which is valid for slow-varying magnetic field with arbitrary magnitude. We apply the new chiral kinetic theory to calculate the electric conductivity transverse to the magnetic field in a magnetized QED and QCD plasma. Under the lowest Landau level approximation and relaxation time approximation, we find the transverse conductivity approaches a constant in the large magnetic field limit and is inversely proportional to the relaxation time. We also obtain a frequency-dependent transverse conductivity in response to a time-dependent ele…
Using high magnetic fields up to 60 T, we report magneto-transport and photoluminescence (PL) studies of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a GaN/AlGaN heterojunction grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. Transport measurements demonstrate that the quantum limit can be exceeded (Landau level filling factor $ν< 1$), and show evidence for the $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state. Simultaneous optical and transport measurements reveal synchronous quantum oscillations of both the PL intensity and longitudinal resistivity in the integer quantum Hall regime. PL spectra directly reveal the dispersi…
We report the realization of a synthetic magnetic field for photons and polaritons in a honeycomb lattice of coupled semiconductor micropillars. A strong synthetic field is induced in both the s and p orbital bands by engineering a uniaxial hopping gradient in the lattice, giving rise to the formation of Landau levels at the Dirac points. We provide direct evidence of the sublattice symmetry breaking of the lowest-order Landau level wavefunction, a distinctive feature of synthetic magnetic fields. Our realization implements helical edge states in the gap between n=0 and n=1 Landau levels, expe…
We demonstrate experimentally that in an asymmetric quantum well in presence of quantizing magnetic field tilted in XZ plane, confining potential V(z) lifts Landau level degeneracy related to position of the centers of electron cyclotron orbits along X axis. This results in a transformation of the Landau levels into the bands in which the electrons may possess nonzero directed velocity along Y axis. We directly demonstrate that the electrons are spatially separated along X axis depending on their velocity along Y axis that means spontaneous one-dimensional electron fluxes flow in opposite dire…
In the absence of an applied magnetic field, a spin-torque nano oscillator(STNO) with a tilted polarizer is studied using numerical simulation of the associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation. We find considerable enhancement of frequency by tilting the polarizer out-of-plane appropriately. Also, we observe improved tunability of frequency of oscillations from 15 GHz to 75 GHz and increment in the power spectral density by current and tilt angle. In addition, our findings and insights pave a simple way for nanoscale level microwave generators to be implemented.
The electronic structure of bilayer graphene under pressure develops very interesting features with an enhancement of the trigonal warping and a splitting of the parabolic touching bands at the K point of the reciprocal space into four Dirac cones, one at K and three along the T symmetry lines. As pressure is increased, these cones separate in reciprocal space and in energy, breaking the electron-hole symmetry. Due to their energy separation, their opposite Berry curvature can be observed in valley Hall effect experiments and in the structure of the Landau levels. Based on the electronic struc…
We have realized an AlAs two-dimensional electron system in which electrons occupy conduction-band valleys with different Fermi contours and effective masses. In the quantum Hall regime, we observe both resistivity spikes and persistent gaps at crossings between the Landau levels originating from these two valleys. From the positions of the spikes in tilted magnetic field and measurements of the energy gaps away from the crossings, we find that, after occupation of the minority valley, the spin susceptibility drops rapidly, and the electrons possess a {\it single} interaction-enhanced g-factor…
In wide GaAs quantum wells where two electric subbands are occupied we apply a parallel magnetic field or increase the electron density to cause a crossing of the two $N=0$ Landau levels of these subbands and with opposite spins. Near the crossing, the fractional quantum Hall states in the filling factor range $1<ν<3$ exhibit a remarkable sequence of pseudospin polarization transitions resulting from the interplay between the spin and subband degrees of freedom. The field positions of the transitions yield a new and quantitative measure of the composite Fermions' discrete energy level separati…
We analyze the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation when the precession motion of the magnetic moments is additionally subjected to an uniaxial anisotropy and is driven by a multiplicative coupled stochastic field with a finite correlation time $τ$. The mean value for the spin wave components offers that the spin-wave dispersion relation and its damping is strongly influenced by the deterministic Gilbert damping parameter $α$, the strength of the stochastic forces $D$ and its temporal range $τ$. The spin-spin-correlation function can be calculated in the low correlation time limit by deriving an e…
Unlike in ordinary metals, in graphene, phonon structure can be seen in the quasiparticle electronic density of states, because the latter varies on the scale of the phonon energy. In a magnetic field, quantization into Landau levels creates even more significant variations. We calculate the density of states incorporating electron-phonon coupling in this case and find that the coupling has pronounced new effects: shifting and broadening of Landau levels, creation of new peaks, and splitting of any Landau levels falling near one of the new peaks. Comparing our calculations with a recent experi…
Two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots are studied in the the filling-factor range 2<v<3. We find both theoretical and experimental evidence of a collective many-body phenomenon, where a fraction of the trapped electrons form an incompressible spin-droplet on the highest occupied Landau level. The phenomenon occurs only when the number of electrons in the quantum dot is larger than ~30. We find the onset of the spin-droplet regime at v=5/2. This proposes a finite-geometry alternative to the Moore-Read-type Pfaffian state of the bulk two-dimensional electron gas. Hence, the spin-droplet for…
Despite various novel broken symmetry states have been revealed in bilayer graphene (BLG) experimentally, the atomic-scale spectroscopic investigation has been greatly limited. Here, we study high-resolution spectroscopic characteristics of high-quality BLG and observe rich broken-symmetry-induced Landau level (LL) splittings, including valley, spin and orbit, by using ultralow-temperature and high-magnetic-field scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). Our experiment demonstrates that both the spin and orbital splittings of the lowest n = (0,1) LL depend sensitively on it…
The tunneling conductance between two parallel 2D electron systems has been measured in a regime of strong interlayer Coulomb correlations. At total Landau level filling $ν_T=1$ the tunnel spectrum changes qualitatively when the boundary separating the compressible phase from the ferromagnetic quantized Hall state is crossed. A huge resonant enhancement replaces the strongly suppressed equilibrium tunneling characteristic of weakly coupled layers. The possible relationship of this enhancement to the Goldstone mode of the broken symmetry ground state is discussed.
