For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, let $δ_1(H)$ denote the minimum vertex degree of $H$, and $ν(H)$ denote the size of the largest matching in $H$. In this paper, we show that for any $k\geq 3$ and $β>0$, there exists an integer $n_0(β,k)$ such that for positive integers $n\geq n_0$ and $m\leq (\frac{k}{2(k-1)}-β)\frac{n}{k}$, if $H$ is an $n$-vertex $k$-graph with $δ_1(H)>{{n-1}\choose {k-1}}-{{n-m}\choose {k-1}},$ then $ν(H)\geq m$. This improves upon earlier results of Bollobás, Daykin and Erdős (1976) for the range $n> 2k^3(m+1)$ and Huang and Zhao (2017) for the range $n\geq 3k^2 m$.
We prove that for every graph $H$, there exists $\varepsilon>0$ such that every $n$-vertex graph with no vertex-minors isomorphic to $H$ has a pair of disjoint sets $A$, $B$ of vertices such that $|A|, |B|\ge \varepsilon n$ and $A$ is complete or anticomplete to $B$. We deduce this from recent work of Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour, and Spirkl (2018). This proves the analog of the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture for vertex-minors.
While investigating odd-cycle free hypergraphs, Győri and Lemons introduced a colored version of the classical theorem of Erdős and Gallai on $P_k$-free graphs. They proved that any graph $G$ with a proper vertex coloring and no path of length $2k+1$ with endpoints of different colors has at most $2kn$ edges. We show that Erdős and Gallai's original sharp upper bound of $kn$ holds for their problem as well. We also introduce a version of this problem for trees and present a generalization of the Erdős-Sós conjecture.
A classical result of Erdős and Gallai determines the maximum size $m(n,ν)$ of a graph $G$ of order $n$ and matching number $νn$. We show that $G$ has factorially many maximum matchings provided that its size is sufficiently close to $m(n,ν)$.
We use an algebraic method to prove a degree version of the celebrated Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem: given $n>2k$, every intersecting $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices contains a vertex that lies on at most $\binom{n-2}{k-2}$ edges. This result can be viewed as a special case of the degree version of a well-known conjecture of Erdős on hypergraph matchings. Improving the work of Bollobás, Daykin, and Erd\H os from 1976, we show that given integers $n, k, s$ with $n\ge 3k^2 s$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices with minimum vertex degree greater than $\binom{n-1}{k-1}-\binom…
In 1965 Erdős conjectured that the number of edges in k-uniform hypergraphs on n vertices in which the largest matching has s edges is maximized for hypergraphs of one of two special types. We settled this conjecture in the affirmative for k=3 and n is large enough.
In this paper we give a proof that the largest set of perfect matchings, in which any two contain a common edge, is the set of all perfect matchings that contain a fixed edge. This is a version of the famous Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for perfect matchings. The proof given in this paper is algebraic, we first determine the least eigenvalue of the perfect matching derangement graph and use properties of the perfect matching polytope. We also prove that the perfect matching derangement graph is not a Cayley graph.
We prove a new upper bound for the minimum $d$-degree threshold for perfect matchings in $k$-uniform hypergraphs when $d<k/2$. As a consequence, this determines exact values of the threshold when $0.42k \le d < k/2$ or when $(k,d)=(12,5)$ or $(17,7)$. Our approach is to give an upper bound on the Erdős Matching Conjecture and convert the result to the minimum $d$-degree setting by an approach of Kühn, Osthus and Townsend. To obtain exact thresholds, we also apply a result of Treglown and Zhao.
A celebrated unresolved conjecture of Erdős and Hajnal states that for every undirected graph $H$ there exists $ε(H)>0$ such that every undirected graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or stable set of size at least $n^{ε(H)}$. The conjecture has a directed equivalent version stating that for every tournament $H$ there exists $ε(H)>0$ such that every $H$-free $n$-vertex tournament $T$ contains a transitive subtournament of order at least $n^{ε(H)}$. We say that a tournament is \textit{prime} if it does not have nontrivial homogeneous sets. So …
A perfect matching in the complete graph on $2k$ vertices is a set of edges such that no two edges have a vertex in common and every vertex is covered exactly once. Two perfect matchings are said to be $t$-intersecting if they have at least $t$ edges in common. The main result in this paper is an extension of the famous Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) theorem \cite{EKR} to 2-intersecting families of perfect matchings for all values of $k$. Specifically, for $k\geq 3$ a set of 2-intersecting perfect matchings in $K_{2k}$ of maximum size has $(2k-5)(2k-7)\cdots (1)$ perfect matchings.
A conjecture of Alon, Pach and Solymosi, which is equivalent to the celebrated Erdős-Hajnal Conjecture, states that for every tournament $S$ there exists $ε(S)>0$ such that if $T$ is an $n$-vertex tournament that does not contains $S$ as a subtournament, then $T$ contains a transitive subtournament on at least $n^{ε(S)}$ vertices. Let $C_5$ be the unique five-vertex tournament where every vertex has two inneighbors and two outneighbors. The Alon-Pach-Solymosi conjecture is known to be true for the case when $S=C_5$. Here we prove a strengthening of this result, showing that in every tournament…
A celebrated unresolved conjecture of Erdös and Hajnal states that for every undirected graph $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every undirected graph on $ n $ vertices that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or a stable set of size at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. The conjecture has a directed equivalent version stating that for every tournament $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every $H-$free $n-$vertex tournament $T$ contains a transitive subtournament of order at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. Both the directed and the undirected versions of the conjecture are known to be…
A $2k$-matching is a perfect matching of the complete graph on $2k$ vertices. Two $2k$-matchings are defined to be $t$-intersecting if they have at least $t$ edges in common. The main result in this paper is that if $k \geq 3t/2+1$, then the largest system of $t$-intersecting $2k$-matchings has size $(2(k-t)-1)!! = \prod_{i=0}^{k-t-1}(2k-2t-2i-1)$ and the only systems that meet this bound consist of all $2k$-matchings that contain a set of $t$ disjoint edges. Further, this bound on $k$ is sharp for $t\geq 6$. The method used is this paper is similar to the proof of the complete Erdős-Ko-Rado t…
In 1965, Paul Erdős asked about the largest family $Y$ of $k$-sets in $\{ 1, \ldots, n \}$ such that $Y$ does not contain $s+1$ pairwise disjoint sets. This problem is commonly known as the Erdős Matching Conjecture. We investigate the $q$-analog of this question, that is we want to determine the size of a largest family $Y$ of $k$-spaces in $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ such that $Y$ does not contain $s+1$ pairwise disjoint $k$-spaces. Here we call two subspaces disjoint if they intersect trivially. Our main result is, slightly simplified, that if $16 s \leq \min\{ q^{\frac{n-k}{4}},$ $q^{\frac{n-2k+1}{3}…
Two perfect matchings $P$ and $Q$ of the complete graph on $2k$ vertices are said to be set-wise $t$-intersecting if there exist edges $P_{1}, \cdots, P_{t}$ in $P$ and $Q_{1}, \cdots, Q_{t}$ in $Q$ such that the union of edges $P_{1}, \cdots, P_{t}$ has the same set of vertices as the union of $Q_{1}, \cdots, Q_{t}$ has. In this paper we prove an extension of the famous Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) theorem to set-wise $2$-intersecting families of perfect matching on all values of $k$, and we conjecture similar statement for all $t\geq 2$.
A minor-model of a graph $H$ in a graph $G$ is a subgraph of $G$ that can be contracted to $H$. We prove that for a positive integer $\ell$ and a non-empty planar graph $H$ with at least $\ell-1$ connected components, there exists a function $f_{H, \ell}:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ satisfying the property that every graph $G$ with a family of vertex subsets $Z_1, \ldots, Z_m$ contains either $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint minor-models of $H$ each intersecting at least $\ell$ sets among prescribed vertex sets, or a vertex subset of size at most $f_{H, \ell}(k)$ that meets all such minor-mod…
Drisko \cite{drisko} proved (essentially) that every family of $2n-1$ matchings of size $n$ in a bipartite graph possesses a partial rainbow matching of size $n$. In \cite{bgs} this was generalized as follows: Any $\lfloor \frac{k+2}{k+1} n \rfloor -(k+1)$ matchings of size $n$ in a bipartite graph have a rainbow matching of size $n-k$. We extend this latter result to matchings of not necessarily equal cardinalities. Settling a conjecture of Drisko, we characterize those families of $2n-2$ matchings of size $n$ in a bipartite graph that do not possess a rainbow matching of size $n$. Combining …
It follows from a theorem of Lovász that if $ D $ is a finite digraph with $ r\in V(D) $ then there is a spanning subdigraph $ E $ of $ D $ such that for every vertex $ v\neq r $ the following quantities are equal: the local connectivity from $ r $ to $ v $ in $ D $, the local connectivity from $ r $ to $ v $ in $ E $ and the indegree of $ v $ in $ E $. In infinite combinatorics cardinality is often an overly rough measure to obtain deep results and it is more fruitful to capture structural properties instead of just equalities between certain quantities. The best known example for such a resu…
We prove that for every graph, any vertex subset $S$, and given integers $k,\ell$: there are $k$ disjoint cycles of length at least $\ell$ that each contain at least one vertex from $S$, or a vertex set of size $O(\ell \cdot k \log k)$ that meets all such cycles. This generalises previous results of Fiorini and Hendrickx and of Pontecorvi and Wollan. In addition, we describe an algorithm for our main result that runs in $O(k \log k \cdot s^2 \cdot (f(\ell) \cdot n+m))$ time, where $s$ denotes the cardinality of $S$.
In 1965 Erdős asked, what is the largest size of a family of $k$-element subsets of an $n$-element set that does not have a matching of size $s+1$? In this note, we improve upon a recent result of Frankl and resolve this problem for $s>101k^{3}$ and $(s+1)k\le n<(s+1)(k+\frac{1}{100k})$.
We say that the families $\mathcal F_1,\ldots, \mathcal F_{s+1}$ of $k$-element subsets of $[n]$ are cross-dependent if there are no pairwise disjoint sets $F_1,\ldots, F_{s+1}$, where $F_i\in \mathcal F_i$ for each $i$. The rainbow version of the Erd\H os Matching Conjecture due to Aharoni and Howard and independently to Huang, Loh and Sudakov states that $\min_{i} |\mathcal F_i|\le \max\big\{{n\choose k}-{n-s\choose k}, {(s+1)k-1\choose k}\big\}$ for $n\ge (s+1)k$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for $n>3e(s+1)k$ and $s>10^7$. One of the main tools in the proof is a concentration ine…
More than 50 years ago, Erd\H os asked the following question: what is the maximum size of a family $\mathcal F$ of $k$-element subsets of an $n$-element set if it has no $s+1$ pairwise disjoint sets? This question attracted a lot of attention recently, in particular, due to its connection to various combinatorial, probabilistic and theoretical computer science problems. Improving the previous best bound due to the first author, we prove that $|\mathcal F|\le {n\choose k}-{n-s\choose k}$, provided $n\ge \frac 53sk -\frac 23 s$ and $s$ is sufficiently large. We derive several corollaries concer…
The cube Q is the usual 8-vertex graph with 12 edges. Here we give a new proof for a theorem of Erdős and Simonovits concerning the Turán number of the cube. Namely, it is shown that e(G) < n^{8/5}+(2n)^{3/2} holds for any n-vertex cube-free graph G. Our aim is to give a self-contained exposition. We also point out the best known results and supply bipartite versions.
Let $\mathcal{H}=(V,\mathcal{E})$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices and fix a positive integer $k$ such that $1\le k\le r$. A $k$-\emph{matching} of $\mathcal{H}$ is a collection of edges $\mathcal{M}\subset \mathcal{E}$ such that every subset of $V$ whose cardinality equals $k$ is contained in at most one element of $\mathcal{M}$. The $k$-matching number of $\mathcal{H}$ is the maximum cardinality of a $k$-matching. A well-known problem, posed by Erdős, asks for the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph under constraints on its $1$-matching number. In this article we…
We show the following for every sufficiently connected graph $G$, any vertex subset $S$ of $G$, and given integer $k$: there are $k$ disjoint odd cycles in $G$ each containing a vertex of $S$ or there is set $X$ of at most $2k-2$ vertices such that $G-X$ does not contain any odd cycle that contains a vertex of $S$. We prove this via an extension of Kawarabayashi and Reed's result about parity-$k$-linked graphs (Combinatorica 29, 215-225). From this result it is easy to deduce several other well known results about the Erdős-Pósa property of odd cycles in highly connected graphs. This strengthe…
A linear hypergraph is intersecting if any two different edges have exactly one common vertex and an $n$-quasicluster is an intersecting linear hypergraph with $n$ edges each one containing at most $n$ vertices and every vertex is contained in at least two edges. The Erdös-Faber-Lovász Conjecture states that the chromatic number of any $n$-quasicluster is at most $n$. In the present note we prove the correctness of the conjecture for a new infinite class of $n$-quasiclusters using a specific edge coloring of the complete graph.
A classic result of Erdős and Pósa says that any graph contains either $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles or can be made acyclic by deleting at most $O(k \log k)$ vertices. Here we generalize this result by showing that for all numbers $k$ and $l$ and for every graph $G$, either $G$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles of length at least $l$, or there exists a set $X$ of $\mathcal O(kl+k\log k)$ vertices that meets all cycles of length at least $l$ in $G$. As a corollary, the tree-width of any graph $G$ that does not contain $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles of length at least $l$ is of order $\mathcal O(kl+k…
The Erdős--Faber--Lovász Conjecture, posed in 1972, states that if a graph $G$ is the union of $n$ cliques of order $n$ (referred to as defining $n$-cliques) such that two cliques can share at most one vertex, then the vertices of $G$ can be properly coloured using $n$ colours. Although still open after almost 50 years, it can be easily shown that the conjecture is true when every shared vertex belongs to exactly two defining $n$-cliques. We here provide a quick and easy algorithm to colour the vertices of $G$ in this case, and discuss connections with clique-decompositions and edge-colourings…
The Kneser hypergraph ${\rm KG}^r_{n,k}$ is an $r$-uniform hypergraph with vertex set consisting of all $k$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and any collection of $r$ vertices forms an edge if their corresponding $k$-sets are pairwise disjoint. The random Kneser hypergraph ${\rm KG}^r_{n,k}(p)$ is a spanning subhypergraph of ${\rm KG}^r_{n,k}$ in which each edge of ${\rm KG}^r_{n,k}$ is retained independently of each other with probability $p$. The independence number of random subgraphs of ${\rm KG}^2_{n,k}$ was recently addressed in a series of works by Bollob{á}s, Narayanan, and Raigorodskii (20…
Erdős and Rothschild asked to estimate the maximum number, denoted by H(N,C), such that every N-vertex graph with at least CN^2 edges, each of which is contained in at least one triangle, must contain an edge that is in at least H(N,C) triangles. In particular, Erdős asked in 1987 to determine whether for every C>0 there is ε>0 such that H(N,C) > N^ε, for all sufficiently large N. We prove that H(N,C) = N^{O(1/log log N)} for every fixed C < 1/4. This gives a negative answer to the question of Erdős, and is best possible in terms of the range for C, as it is known that every N-vertex graph wit…
A perfect matching of a complete graph $K_{2n}$ is a 1-regular subgraph that contains all the vertices. Two perfect matchings intersect if they share an edge. It is known that if $\mathcal{F}$ is family of intersecting perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$, then $|\mathcal{F}| \leq (2(n-1) - 1)!!$ and if equality holds, then $\mathcal{F} = \mathcal{F}_{ij}$ where $ \mathcal{F}_{ij}$ is the family of all perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$ that contain some fixed edge $ij$. We give a short algebraic proof of this result, resolving a question of Godsil and Meagher. Along the way, we show that if a family $\ma…
In this paper we completely resolve the well-known problem of Erdős and Sauer from 1975 which asks for the maximum number of edges an $n$-vertex graph can have without containing a $k$-regular subgraph, for some fixed integer $k\geq 3$. We prove that any $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $C_k\log \log n$ contains a $k$-regular subgraph. This matches the lower bound of Pyber, Rödl and Szemerédi and substantially improves an old result of Pyber, who showed that average degree at least $C_k\log n$ is enough. Our method can also be used to settle asymptotically a problem raised by Erdő…

The Erdős--Gallai Theorem states that for $k \geq 3$, any $n$-vertex graph with no cycle of length at least $k$ has at most $\frac{1}{2}(k-1)(n-1)$ edges. A stronger version of the Erdős--Gallai Theorem was given by Kopylov: If $G$ is a 2-connected $n$-vertex graph with no cycle of length at least $k$, then $e(G) \leq \max\{h(n,k,2),h(n,k,\lfloor \frac{k-1}{2}\rfloor)\}$, where $h(n,k,a) := {k - a \choose 2} + a(n - k + a)$. Furthermore, Kopylov presented the two possible extremal graphs, one with $h(n,k,2)$ edges and one with $h(n,k,\lfloor \frac{k-1}{2}\rfloor)$ edges. In this paper, we comp…
In this paper we study conditions which guarantee the existence of perfect matchings and perfect fractional matchings in uniform hypergraphs. We reduce this problem to an old conjecture by Erdős on estimating the maximum number of edges in a hypergraph when the (fractional) matching number is given, which we are able to solve in some special cases using probabilistic techniques. Based on these results, we obtain some general theorems on the minimum $d$-degree ensuring the existence of perfect (fractional) matchings. In particular, we asymptotically determine the minimum vertex degree which gua…
We prove that for every nowhere dense class of graphs $\mathcal{C}$, positive integer $d$, and $\varepsilon>0$, the following holds: in every $n$-vertex graph $G$ from $\mathcal{C}$ one can find two disjoint vertex subsets $A,B\subseteq V(G)$ such that $|A|\geq (1/2-\varepsilon)\cdot n$ and $|B|=Ω(n^{1-\varepsilon})$ and either $\operatorname{dist}(a,b)\leq d$ for all $a\in A$ and $b\in B$, or $\operatorname{dist}(a,b)>d$ for all $a\in A$ and $b\in B$. We also show some stronger variants of this statement, including a generalization to the setting of First-Order interpretations of nowhere dens…
A family $\mathcal F\subset {[n]\choose k}$ is $U(s,q)$ of for any $F_1,\ldots, F_s\in \mathcal F$ we have $|F_1\cup\ldots\cup F_s|\le q$. This notion generalizes the property of a family to be $t$-intersecting and to have matching number smaller than $s$. In this paper, we find the maximum $|\mathcal F|$ for $\mathcal F$ that are $U(s,q)$, provided $n>C(s,q)k$ with moderate $C(s,q)$. In particular, we generalize the result of the first author on the Erdős Matching Conjecture and prove a generalization of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, which states that for $n> s^2k$ the largest family $\mathcal F…

The Erdős-Gallai Theorem states that for $k \geq 2$, every graph of average degree more than $k - 2$ contains a $k$-vertex path. This result is a consequence of a stronger result of Kopylov: if $k$ is odd, $k=2t+1\geq 5$, $n \geq (5t-3)/2$, and $G$ is an $n$-vertex $2$-connected graph with at least $h(n,k,t) := {k-t \choose 2} + t(n -k+ t)$ edges, then $G$ contains a cycle of length at least $k$ unless $G = H_{n,k,t} := K_n - E(K_{n - t})$. In this paper we prove a stability version of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem: we show that for all $n \geq 3t > 3$, and $k \in \{2t+1,2t + 2\}$, every $n$-vertex…
