For a graph $H$, the Turán number of $H$, denoted by ex$(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges of an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph. Let $g(n,H)$ denote the maximum number of edges not contained in any monochromatic copy of $H$ in a $2$-edge-coloring of $K_n$. A wheel $W_m$ is a graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of a cycle of length $m-1$. The Turán number of $W_{2k}$ was determined by Simonovits in the 1960s. In this paper, we determine ex$(n,W_{2k+1})$ when $n$ is sufficiently large. We also show that, for sufficiently large $n$, $g(n,W_{2k+1})=\mbox{ex}(n,W_{2k+1})$ which confirms a conjecture posed by Keevash and Sudakov for odd wheels.
The odd wheel $W_{2k+1}$ is the graph formed by joining a vertex to a cycle of length $2k$. In this paper, we investigate the largest value of the spectral radius of the adjacency matrix of an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $W_{2k+1}$. We determine the structure of the spectral extremal graphs for all $k\geq 2, k\not\in \{4,5\}$. When $k=2$, we show that these spectral extremal graphs are among the Turán-extremal graphs on $n$ vertices that do not contain $W_{2k+1}$ and have the maximum number of edges, but when $k\geq 9$, we show that the family of spectral extremal graphs and the fam…
The Turán number of a graph $H$, $\text{ex}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices which does not have $H$ as a subgraph. A wheel $W_n$ is an $n$-vertex graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of a cycle $C_{n-1}$. Let $mW_{2k+1}$ denote the $m$ vertex-disjoint copies of $W_{2k+1}$. For sufficiently large $n$, we determine the Turán number and all extremal graphs for $mW_{2k+1}$. We also provide the Turán number and all extremal graphs for $W^{h}:=\bigcup\limits^m_{i=1}W_{k_i}$ when $n$ is sufficiently large, where the number of even wheels is $h$ a…
A wheel graph is a graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of a cycle. A graph is called wheel-free if it does not contain any wheel graph as a subgraph. In 2010, Nikiforov proposed a Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem: what is the maximum spectral radius of a graph of order $n$ that does not contain subgraphs of particular kind. In this paper, we study the Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem for wheel-free graphs, and we determine the maximum (signless Laplacian) spectral radius of a wheel-free graph of order $n$. Furthermore, we characterize the extremal graphs.

A wheel is a graph formed by a chordless cycle and a vertex that has at least three neighbors in the cycle. We prove that every 3-connected graph that does not contain a wheel as a subgraph is in fact minimally 3-connected. We give a new proof of a theorem of Thomassen and Toft: every graph that does not contain a wheel as a subgraph is 3-colorable.
We prove that a graph has an r-bounded subdivision of a wheel if and only if it does not have a graph-decomposition of locality r and width at most two.
A \emph{wheel} is a graph formed by a chordless cycle $C$ and a vertex $u$ not in $C$ that has at least three neighbors in $C$. We prove that every 3-connected planar graph that does not contain a wheel as an induced subgraph is either a line graph or has a clique cutset. We prove that every planar graph that does not contain a wheel as an induced subgraph is 3-colorable.
A wheel is a graph consisting of an induced cycle of length at least four and a single additional vertex with at least three neighbours on the cycle. We prove that no Burling graph contains an induced wheel. Burling graphs are triangle-free and have arbitrarily large chromatic number, so this answers a question of Trotignon and disproves a conjecture of Scott and Seymour.
It has been an open problem to find the Moore-Penrose inverses of the incidence, Laplacian, and signless Laplacian matrices of families of graphs except trees and unicyclic graphs. Since the inverse formulas for an odd unicyclic graph and an even unicyclic graph are quite different, we consider wheel graphs as they are formed from odd or even cycles. In this article solve the open problem for wheel graphs. This work has an interesting connection to inverses of circulant matrices.
Total dominator total coloring of a graph is a total coloring of the graph such that each object of the graph is adjacent or incident to every object of some color class. The minimum namber of the color classes of a total dominator total coloring of a graph is called the total dominator total chromatic number of the graph. Here, we will find the total dominator chromatic numbers of wheels, complete bipartite graphs and complete graphs.
It was conjectured by Hajós that graphs containing no $K_5$-subdivision are 4-colorable. Previous results show that any possible minimum counterexample to Hajós' conjecture, called Hajós graph, is 4-connected but not 5-connected. In this paper, we show that if a Hajós graph admits a 4-cut or 5-cut with a planar side then the planar side must be small or contains a special wheel. This is a step in our effort to reduce Hajós' conjecture to the Four Color Theorem.
An ISK4 in a graph G is an induced subgraph of G that is isomorphic to a subdivision of K4 (the complete graph on four vertices). A wheel is a graph that consists of a chordless cycle, together with a vertex that has at least three neighbors in the cycle. A graph is {ISK4,wheel}-free if it has no ISK4 and does not contain a wheel as an induced subgraph. A "trigraph" is a generalization of a graph in which some pairs of vertices have "undetermined" adjacency. We prove a decomposition theorem for {ISK4,wheel}-free trigraphs. Our proof closely follows the proof of a decomposition theorem for ISK4…
We build unbounded classes of plane and projective plane multiwheels that are 4-critical that are received summing odd wheels as edge sums modulo two. These classes can be considered as ascending from single common graph that can be received as edge sum modulo two of the octahedron graph O and the minimal wheel W3. All graphs of these classes belong to 2n-2-edges-class of graphs, among which are those that quadrangulate projective plane, i.e., graphs from Grötzsch class, received applying Mycielski's Construction to odd cycle.
One of the important features of an interconnection network is its ability to efficiently simulate programs or parallel algorithms written for other architectures. Such a simulation problem can be mathematically formulated as a graph embedding problem. In this paper we compute the lower bound for dilation and congestion of embedding onto wheel-like networks. Further, we compute the exact dilation of embedding wheel-like networks into hypertrees, proving that the lower bound obtained is sharp. Again, we compute the exact congestion of embedding windmill graphs into circulant graphs, proving tha…
The Watson-Crick complementary properties of DNA make DNA a useful tool for the self-assembly of various target complexes. Concepts from graph theory can be used to model the self-assembling process in which the vertices of the graph represent $k$-armed branched junction molecules, called tiles. We seek to determine the minimum number of tile and cohesive-end types necessary to create the desired self-assembled complex. Although results are known for a few infinite classes of graphs, many classes of graphs remain unsolved. We present results for the wheel graph within the restrictions of three…
Distinctive power of the alliance polynomial has been studied in previous works, for instance, it has been proved that the empty, path, cycle, complete, complete without one edge and star graphs are characterized by its alliance polynomial. Moreover, it has been proved that the family of alliance polynomial of regular graphs with small degree is a very special one, since it does not contain alliance polynomial of graphs other than regular graph with the same degree. In this work we prove that the alliance polynomial also determines the wheel graphs.
A class of graphs is $χ$-bounded if there exists a function $f:\mathbb N\rightarrow \mathbb N$ such that for every graph $G$ in the class and an induced subgraph $H$ of $G$, if $H$ has no clique of size $q+1$, then the chromatic number of $H$ is less than or equal to $f(q)$. We denote by $W_n$ the wheel graph on $n+1$ vertices. We show that the class of graphs having no vertex-minor isomorphic to $W_n$ is $χ$-bounded. This generalizes several previous results; $χ$-boundedness for circle graphs, for graphs having no $W_5$ vertex-minors, and for graphs having no fan vertex-minors.
The main goal of the paper is to characterize new classes of multicone graphs which are determined by both adjacency and Laplacian spectra. A multicone graph is defined to be the join of a clique and a regular graph. A wheel graph obtained from the join of a complete graph on a vertex with a cycle. A question about when wheel graphs are determined by their adjacency spectra is still unsolved. So, any indication about the determinations of these graphs with respect to their adjacency spectra can be an interesting and important problem. In [Y. Zhang, X. Liu, and X. Yong: Which wheel graphs are d…
Given a graph $G$ and a graph property $P$ we say that $G$ is minimal with respect to $P$ if no proper induced subgraph of $G$ has the property $P$. An HC-obstruction is a minimal 2-connected non-Hamiltonian graph. Given a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-free if $G$ has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The main motivation for this paper originates from a theorem of Duffus, Gould, and Jacobson (1981), which characterizes all the minimal connected graphs with no Hamiltonian path. In 1998, Brousek characterized all the claw-free HC-obstructions. On a similar note, Chiba and Furuya (2021), cha…
A cyclic base ordering of a connected graph $G$, is a cyclic ordering of $E(G)$ such that every cyclically consecutive $|V(G)|-1$ edges form a spanning tree. In this project, we study cyclic base ordering of various families of graphs, including square of cycles, wheel graphs, generalized wheel graphs and broken wheel graphs, fan and broken fan graphs, prism graphs, and maximal 2-degenerate graphs. We also provide a polynomial time algorithm to verify any giving edge ordering is a cyclic base ordering.
For two given graphs $G$ and $H$ the planar Ramsey number $PR(G,H)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every planar graph $F$ on $n$ vertices either contains a copy of $G$, or its complement contains a copy of $H$. In this paper, we first characterize some structural properties of $C_4$-free planar graphs, and then we determine all planar Ramsey numbers $PR(C_4, W_n)$, for $n\ge 3$.
For two given graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, the Ramsey number $R(G_1,G_2)$ is the least integer $r$ such that for every graph $G$ on $r$ vertices, either $G$ contains a $G_1$ or $\bar{G}$ contains a $G_2$. In this note, we determined the Ramsey number $R(K_{1,n},W_m)$ for even $m$ with $n+2\leq m\leq 2n-2$, where $W_m$ is the wheel on $m+1$ vertices, i.e., the graph obtained from a cycle $C_m$ by adding a vertex $v$ adjacent to all vertices of the $C_m$.
A wheel is a graph that consists of a chordless cycle of length at least 4 plus a vertex with at least three neighbors on the cycle. It was shown recently that detecting induced wheels is an NP-complete problem. In contrast, it is shown here that graphs that contain no wheel and no antiwheel have a very simple structure and consequently can be recognized in polynomial time.
An extremal graph for a graph $H$ on $n$ vertices is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum number of edges that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $T_{n,r}$ be the Turán graph, which is the complete $r$-partite graph on $n$ vertices with part sizes that differ by at most one. The well-known Turán Theorem states that $T_{n,r}$ is the only extremal graph for complete graph $K_{r+1}$. Erdös et al. (1995) determined the extremal graphs for intersecting triangles and Chen et al. (2003) determined the maximum number of edges of the extremal graphs for intersecting cliques. In this paper, we dete…
We provide new constructions of Meyniel extremal graphs, which are families of graphs with the conjectured largest asymptotic cop number. Using spanning subgraphs, we prove that there are an exponential number of new Meyniel extremal families with specified degrees. Using a linear programming problem on hypergraphs, we explore the degrees in families that are not Meyniel extremal. We give the best-known upper bound on the cop number of vertex-transitive graphs with a prescribed degree. We find new Meyniel extremal families of regular graphs with large chromatic number, large diameter, and expl…
The spectral radius and rank of a graph are defined to be the spectral radius and rank of its adjacency matrix, respectively. It is an important problem in spectral extremal graph theory to determine the extremal graph that has the maximum or minimum spectral radius over certain families of graphs. Monsalve and Rada [Extremal spectral radius of graphs with rank 4, Linear Algebra Appl. 609 (2021) 1-11] obtained the extremal graphs with maximum and minimum spectral radii among all graphs with order n and rank 4. In this paper, we first determine the extremal graph which attains the maximum spect…
New graph invariant, which is called mixed metric dimension, has been recently introduced. In this paper, exact results of mixed metric dimension on two special classes of graphs are found: flower snarks $J_n$ and wheels $W_n$. It is proved that mixed metric dimension for $J_5$ is equal to 5, while for higher dimensions it is constant and equal to 4. For $W_n$, its mixed metric dimension is not constant, but it is equal to $n$ when $n\geq 4$, while it is equal to 4, for $n=3$.
An odd wheel graph is a graph formed by connecting a new vertex to all vertices of an odd cycle. We answer a question of Rosenfeld and Le by showing that odd wheels cannot be drawn in the plane such that the lengths of the edges are odd integers.
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, define the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. Much like graph Ramsey numbers, Gallai-Ramsey numbers have gained a reputation as being very difficult to compute in general. As yet, still only precious few sharp results are known. In this paper, we obtain bounds on the Gallai-Ramsey number for wheels and the exact value for the wheel on $5$ vertices.
In this paper a subset of High-Dimensional Random Apollonian networks, that we called Wheel Random Apollonian Graphs (WRAG), is considered. We show how to generate a Wheel Random Apollonian Graph from a wheel graph. We analyse some basic graph properties like vertices and edges cardinality, some question concerning cycles and the chromaticity in such type of graphs, we suggest further work on this type of graphs.
The family of Directed Acyclic Graphs as well as some related graphs are analyzed with respect to extremal behavior in relation with the family of intersection graphs for families of boxes with transverse intersection.
In this paper we deal with a Turán-type problem: given a positive integer n and a forbidden graph H, how many edges can there be in a graph on n vertices without a subgraph H? How does a graph look like if it has this extremal edge number? The forbidden graph in this article is a clique-path: a path of length k where each edge is extended to an r-clique, r >2. We determine both the extremal number and the extremal graphs for sufficiently large n.
We survey various aspects of infinite extremal graph theory and prove several new results. The lead role play the parameters connectivity and degree. This includes the end degree. Many open problems are suggested.
The \emph{blow-up} of a graph $H$ is the graph obtained from replacing each edge in $H$ by a clique of the same size where the new vertices of the cliques are all different. Erdős et al. and Chen et al. determined the extremal number of blow-ups of stars. Glebov determined the extremal number and found all extremal graphs for blow-ups of paths. We determined the extremal number and found the extremal graphs for the blow-ups of cycles and a large class of trees, when $n$ is sufficiently large. This generalizes their results. The additional aim of our note is to draw attention to a powerful tool…
Truemper configurations (thetas, pyramids, prisms, and wheels) have played an important role in the study of complex hereditary graph classes (e.g. the class of perfect graphs and the class of even-hole-free graphs), appearing both as excluded configurations, and as configurations around which graphs can be decomposed. In this paper, we study the structure of graphs that contain (as induced subgraphs) no Truemper configurations other than (possibly) universal wheels and twin wheels. We also study several subclasses of this class. We use our structural results to analyze the complexity of the r…
