In this paper, we initiate the study of a discrete-time dynamical system modelling a trophic network connecting the three types of plankton (phytoplankton, zooplankton, mixoplankton) and bacteria. The nonlinear operator V associated with this dynamical system is of type 4-Volterra quadratic stochastic operator (QSO) with twelve parameters. We give conditions on the parameters under which this operator maps the five-dimensional standard simplex to itself and we find its fixed points. Moreover, we study the limit points of trajectories for this operator. For each situations we give some biological interpretations.
The aim of this work is to study qualitative dynamical properties of a generalized hepatitis B epidemic model and its dynamically consistent discrete model.
The goal of this article is to study how combinatorial equivalence implies topological conjugacy. For that, we introduce the concept of kneading sequences for nonautonomous discrete dynamical systems and show that these sequences are a complete invariant for topological conjugacy classes.
In this article, we solve some word equations originated from discrete dynamical systems related to antisymmetric cubic map. These equations emerge when we work with primitive and greatest words. We conclude with some applications
Bifurcation equations, non-degeneracy and transversality conditions are obtained for the fold, transcritical, pitchfork and flip bifurcations for periodic points of one dimensional implicitly defined discrete dynamical systems. The backward Euler method and the trapezoid method for numeric solutions of ordinary differential equations fall in the category of implicit dynamical systems. Examples of bifurcations are given for some implicit dynamical systems including bifurcations for the backward Euler method when the step size is changed.
We characterize synchronization phenomenon in discrete-time, discrete-state random dynamical systems, with random and probabilistic Boolean networks as particular examples. In terms of multiplicative ergodic properties of the induced linear cocycle, we show such a random dynamical system with finite state synchronizes if and only if the Lyapunov exponent $0$ has simple multiplicity. For the case of countable state space, characterization of synchronization is provided in terms of the spectral subspace corresponding to the Lyapunov exponent $-\infty$. In addition, for both cases of finite and c…
We study dynamical systems $(X,G,m)$ with a compact metric space $X$ and a locally compact, $σ$-compact, abelian group $G$. We show that such a system has discrete spectrum if and only if a certain space average over the metric is a Bohr almost periodic function. In this way, this average over the metric plays for general dynamical systems a similar role as the autocorrelation measure plays in the study of aperiodic order for special dynamical systems based on point sets.
In this paper, we investigate the embeddings for topological flows. We prove an embedding theorem for discrete topological system. Our results apply to suspension flows via constant function, and for this case we show an embedding theorem for suspension flows and give a new proof of Gutman-Jin embedding theorem.
Motivated by the problem of reconstructing dynamics from samples we revisit the Conley index theory for discrete multivalued dynamical systems. We introduce a new, less restrictive definition of the isolating neighbourhood. It turns out that then the main tool for the construction of the index, i.e. the index pair, is no longer useful. In order to overcome this obstacle we use the concept of weak index pairs.
We consider SISI epidemic model with discrete-time. The crucial point of this model is that an individual can be infected twice. This non-linear evolution operator depends on seven parameters and we assume that the population size under consideration is constant, so death rate is the same with birth rate per unit time. Reducing to quadratic stochastic operator (QSO) we study the dynamical system of the SISI model.
We look at the preservation of various notions of shadowing in discrete dynamical systems under inverse limits, products, factor maps and the induced maps for symmetric products and hyperspaces. The shadowing properties we consider are the following: shadowing, h-shadowing, eventual shadowing, orbital shadowing, strong orbital shadowing, the first and second weak shadowing properties, limit shadowing, s-limit shadowing, orbital limit shadowing and inverse shadowing.
In this paper, we study a discrete-time dynamical system generated by the evolution operator of a wild mosquito population with specific rates of birth and emergence from larvae to adults. The death rates of larvae and adults are assumed to be constant. We find fixed points and under some conditions, on parameters, we show the global attractiveness of a fixed point.
We study the discrete-time dynamical systems associated to a stage-structured wild and sterile mosquito population. We describe all fixed points of the evolution operator (which depends on five parameters) of mosquito population and show that depending on the parameters this operator may have unique, two and infinitely many fixed points. Under some general conditions on parameters we determine type of each fixed point and give the limit points of the dynamical system. Moreover, for a special case of parameters we give full analysis of corresponding dynamical system. We give some biological int…
We study a discrete-time dynamical system of wild mosquito population with parameters: $β$ - the birth rate of adults; $α$ - maximum emergence rate; $μ>0$ - the death rate of adults; $γ$ - Allee effects. We prove that if $γ\geq\frac{α(β-μ)}{μ^2}$ then the mosquito population dies and if $γ<\frac{α(β-μ)}{μ^2}$ holds then extinction or survival of the mosquito population depends on their initial state.
In this paper we study the dynamics of a general non-autonomous dynamical system generated by a family of continuous self maps on a compact space $X$. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the system to exhibit complex dynamical behavior. In the process we discuss properties like transitivity, weakly mixing, topologically mixing, minimality, sensitivity, topological entropy and Li-Yorke chaoticity for the non-autonomous system. We also give examples to prove that the dynamical behavior of the non-autonomous system in general cannot be characterized in terms of the dynamical behavio…
We study the asymptotics, box dimension, and Minkowski content of trajectories of some discrete dynamical systems. We show that under very general conditions, trajectories corresponding to parameters where saddle-node bifurcation appears have box dimension equal to 1/2, while those corresponding to period-doubling bifurcation parameter have box dimension equal to 2/3. Furthermore, all these trajectories are Minkowski nondegenerate. The results are illustrated in the case of logistic map.
Recently, continuous-time dynamical systems, based on systems of ordinary differential equations, for mosquito populations are studied. In this paper we consider discrete-time dynamical system generated by an evolution quadratic operator of mosquito population and show that this system has two fixed points, which are saddle points (under some conditions on the parameters of the system). We construct an evolution algebra taking its matrix of structural constants equal to the Jacobian of the quadratic operator at a fixed point. Idempotent and absolute nilpotent elements, simplicity properties an…
We present a systematic methodology to determine and locate analytically isolated periodic points of discrete and continuous dynamical systems with algebraic nature. We apply this method to a wide range of examples, including a one-parameter family of counterexamples to the discrete Markus-Yamabe conjecture (La Salle conjecture); the study of the low periods of a Lotka-Volterra-type map; the existence of three limit cycles for a piece-wise linear planar vector field; a new counterexample of Kouchnirenko's conjecture; and an alternative proof of the existence of a class of symmetric central con…
We study two coupled discrete-time equations with different (asynchronous) periodic time scales. The coupling is of the type sample and hold, i.e., the state of each equation is sampled at its update times and held until it is read as an input at the next update time for the other equation. We construct an interpolating two-dimensional complex-valued system on the union of the two time scales and an extrapolating four-dimensional system on the intersection of the two time scales. We discuss stability by several results, examples and counterexamples in various frameworks to show that the asynch…
A simple discrete planar dynamical model for the ideal (logical) R-S flip-flop circuit is developed with an eye toward mimicking the dynamical behavior observed for actual physical realizations of this circuit. It is shown that the model exhibits most of the qualitative features ascribed to the R-S flip-flop circuit, such as an intrinsic instability associated with unit set and reset inputs, manifested in a chaotic sequence of output states that tend to oscillate among all possible output states, and the existence of periodic orbits of arbitrarily high period that depend on the various intrins…
This paper is concerned with strong Li-Yorke chaos induced by A-coupled-expansion for time-varying (i.e., nonautonomous) discrete systems in metric spaces. Some criteria of chaos in the strong sense of Li-Yorke are established via strict coupled-expansions for irreducible transition matrices in bounded and closed subsets of complete metric spaces and in compact subsets of metric spaces, respectively, where their conditions are weaker than those in the existing literature. One example is provided for illustration.
We consider a discrete dynamical system on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold and we determine the concept of a hyperbolic set for it. We insert a condition in the definition of a hyperbolic set which implies to the unique decomposition of a part of tangent space (at each point of this set) to two unstable and stable subspaces with exponentially increasing and exponentially decreasing dynamics on them. We prove the continuity of this decomposition via the metric created by a torsion-free pseudo-Riemannian connection. We present a global attractor for a diffeomorphism on an open submanifold of the hy…
The paper endeavours to solve the problem of the necessary and sufficient conditions for testing asymptotic stability of the equilibrium state without using a positive definite or semi-definite Lyapunov function for time-invariant nonlinear discrete-time dynamical systems. The solution is based on the concept of the $\bf G$-functions introduced in this paper. As a result, new necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of such systems and an estimation or the exact determination of the asymptotic stability domain of the state $x=0$ are established. Examples are worked out to i…
For C1-smooth strongly monotone discrete-time dynamical systems, it is shown that ``convergence to linearly stable cycles" is a prevalent asymptotic behavior in the measuretheoretic sense. The results are then applied to classes of time-periodic parabolic equations and give new results on prevalence of convergence to periodic solutions. In particular, for equations with Neumann boundary conditions on convex domains, we show the prevalence of the set of initial conditions corresponding to the solutions that converge to spatiallyhomogeneous periodic solutions. While, for equations on radially sy…
We study in this paper global properties, mainly of topological nature, of attractors of discrete dynamical systems. We consider the Andronov-Hopf bifurcation for homeomorphisms of the plane and establish some robustness properties for attractors of such homeomorphisms. We also give relations between attractors of flows and quasi-attractors of homeomorphisms in Rn. Finally, we give a result on the shape (in the sense of Borsuk) of invariant sets of IFSs on the plane, and make some remarks about the recent theory of Conley attractors for IFS.
In this paper, we investigate the dynamics on the hyperspace induced by a non-autonomous dynamical system $(X,\mathbb{F})$, where the non-autonomous system is generated by a sequence $(f_n)$ of continuous self maps on $X$. We relate the dynamical behavior of the induced system on the hyperspace with the dynamical behavior of the original system $(X,\mathbb{F})$. We derive conditions under which the dynamical behavior of the non-autonomous system extends to its induced counterpart(and vice-versa). In the process, we discuss properties like transitivity, weak mixing, topological mixing, topologi…
Whether there is similarity between two physical processes in the movement of objects and the complexity of behavior is an essential problem in science. How to seek similarity through the adoption of quantitative and qualitative research techniques still remains an urgent challenge we face. To this end, the concepts of similarity transformation matrix and similarity degree are innovatively introduced to describe similarity of orbits between two complicated discrete dynamical systems that seem to be irrelevant. Furthermore, we present a general optimal principle, giving a strict characterizatio…
Motivation to revisit the Conley index theory for discrete multivalued dynamical systems stems from the needs of broader real applications, in particular in sampled dynamics or in combinatorial dynamics. The new construction of the index in [B. Batko and M. Mrozek, {\em SIAM J. Applied Dynamical Systems}, 15(2016), pp. 1143-1162] based on weak index pairs, under the circumstances of the absence of index pairs caused by relaxing the isolation property, seems to be a promising step towards this direction. The present paper is a direct continuation of [B. Batko and M. Mrozek, {\em SIAM J. Applied…
In this paper, we study continuum-wise expansive non-autonomous discrete dynamical systems. We discuss various properties of such non-autonomous systems. We further obtain results for cw-expansive non-autonomous systems with shadowing property and obtain an important equivalence. \keywords{Non-autonomous dynamical systems, continuum-wise expansive, shadowing property
Evolutionary games on graphs play an important role in the study of evolution of cooperation in applied biology. Using rigorous mathematical concepts from a dynamical systems and graph theoretical point of view, we formalize the notions of attractor, update rules and update orders. We prove results on attractors for different utility functions and update orders. For complete graphs we characterize attractors for synchronous and sequential update rules. In other cases (for $k$-regular graphs or for different update orders) we provide sufficient conditions for attractivity of full cooperation an…
This paper provides an algorithmic pipeline for studying the intrinsic structure of a finite discrete dynamical system (DDS) modelling an evolving phenomenon. Here, by intrinsic structure we mean, regarding the dynamics of the DDS under observation, the feature of resulting from the "cooperation" of the dynamics of two or more smaller DDS. The intrinsic structure is described by an equation over DDS which represents a hypothesis over the phenomenon under observation. The pipeline allows solving such an equation, i.e., validating the hypothesis over the phenomenon, as far the asymptotic behavio…
We survey the state of the art on the algorithmic analysis of discrete linear dynamical systems, focussing in particular on reachability, model-checking, and invariant-generation questions, both unconditionally as well as relative to oracles for the Skolem Problem.
Here the Integral Value Transformations (IVTs) are considered to be Discrete Dynamical System map in the space\mathbb{N}_(0). In this paper, the dynamics of IVTs is deciphered through the light of Topological Dynamics.
We construct a family of polynomials with real coefficients that contains as a particular case the Fejér and Suffridge polynomials. These polynomials allow us to suggest a robust algorithm to search for cycles of arbitrary length in non-linear autonomous discrete dynamical systems. Numeric examples are included.
We prove the existence of an unbounded connected branch of nontrivial homoclinic trajectories of a family of discrete nonautonomous asymptotically hyperbolic systems parametrized by a circle under assumptions involving the topological properties of the asymptotic stable bundles.
The purpose of this paper is to show that if the spectral radius of the matrix of the linearized system of a nonlinear discrete dynamical system is less then one then the characterization theorem from \cite{KBBB1,KBGB2} holds.
In this paper, we set up a "dictionary" between discrete Schrödinger operators and the holomorphic dynamics on certain affine cubic surfaces, building on previous work by Cantat, Damanik and Gorodetski. Paragraphs 3.2.2 and 3.2.3 were written by Serge Cantat as an appendix.
In order to study the behaviour of discrete dynamical systems under adiabatic cyclic variations of their parameters, we consider discrete versions of adiabatically-rotated rotators. Paralleling the studies in continuous systems, we generalize the concept of geometric phase to discrete dynamics and investigate its presence in these rotators. For the rotated sine circle map, we demonstrate an analytical relationship between the geometric phase and the rotation number of the system. For the discrete version of the rotated rotator considered by Berry, the rotated standard map, we further explore t…
We show that nontrivial homoclinic trajectories of a family of discrete, nonautonomous, asymptotically hyperbolic systems parametrized by a circle bifurcate from a stationary solution if the asymptotic stable bundles Es(+{\infty}) and Es(-{\infty}) of the linearization at the stationary branch are twisted in different ways.
For a dynamical system, it is known that the existence of a Lyapunov-type density function, called Lyapunov density or Rantzer's density function, implies convergence of Lebesgue almost all solutions to an equilibrium. Using the duality between Frobenius-Perron and Koopmann operators, we generalize this result from equilibrium to invariant sets, both for continuous- and discrete-time. Furthermore, some redundant assumptions that exist in the literature of almost everywhere stability for discrete-time, such as the local stability of the attractor and the compactness of the state space, has been…
A technique is introduced which allows to generate -- starting from any solvable discrete-time dynamical system involving N time-dependent variables -- new, generally nonlinear, generations of discrete-time dynamical systems, also involving N time-dependent variables and being as well solvable by algebraic operations (essentially by finding the N zeros of explicitly known polynomials of degree N). The dynamical systems constructed using this technique may also feature large numbers of arbitrary constants, and they need not be autonomous. The solvable character of these models allows to identif…
In this paper we study generalized Poincaré-Andronov-Hopf bifurcations of discrete dynamical systems. We prove a general result for attractors in n-dimensional manifolds satisfying some suitable conditions. This result allows us to obtain sharper Hopf bifurcation theorems for fixed points in the general case and other attractors in low dimensional manifolds. Topological techniques based on the notion of concentricity of manifolds play a substantial role in the paper.
Invariant ergodic measures for generalized Boole type transformations are studied using an invariant quasi-measure generating function approach based on special solutions to the Frobenius--Perron operator. New two-dimensional Boole type transformations are introduced, and their invariant measures and ergodicity properties are analyzed.
The main objective of this paper is to show that two asymptotically stable steady states which belong to an analytic path of asymptotically stable steady states can be gradually transferred one to the other by successive changes of the control parameters.
A recent generalization of the Conley index to discrete multivalued dynamical systems without a continuous selector is motivated by applications to data-driven dynamics. In the present paper we continue the program by studying attractor-repeller pairs and Morse decompositions in this setting. In particular, we prove Morse equation and Morse inequalities.
We develop a $K$-theoretic approach to multiparameter bifurcation theory of homoclinic solutions of discrete non-autonomous dynamical systems from a branch of stationary solutions. As a byproduct we obtain a family index theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic linear dynamical systems which is of independent interest. In the special case of a single parameter, our bifurcation theorem weakens the assumptions in previous work by Pejsachowicz and the first author.
In a previous work, we proved an index theorem for families of asymptotically hyperbolic discrete dynamical systems and obtained applications to bifurcation theory. A weaker and far more common assumption than asymptotic hyperbolicity is the existence of an exponential dichotomy. In this paper we generalize all our previous results to the latter setting, which requires substantial modifications of our arguments. In addition, we generalize previous results on continuity and differentiability of Nemitski operators for discrete dynamical systems to obtain even better bifurcation results.
