For any smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$, we establish the existence of a global weak solution $(\mathbf{u},\mathbf{d}, θ)$ to the simplified, non-isothermal Ericksen-Leslie system modeling the hydrodynamic motion of nematic liquid crystals with variable temperature for any initial and boundary data $(\mathbf{u}_0, \mathbf{d}_0, θ_0)\in\mathbf{H}\times H^1(Ω, \mathbb{S}^2)\times L^1(Ω)$, with $ \mathbf{d}_0(Ω)\subset\mathbb{S}_+^2$ (the upper half sphere) and $\displaystyle\inf_Ωθ_0>0$.
In this paper, we consider the non-isothermal model for incompressible flow of nematic liquid crystals in three dimensions and prove the local existence and uniqueness of the strong solution with periodic initial conditions on $ \mathbb{T}^3$ .
We prove the existence of a weak solution to a non-isothermal compressible model for nematic liquid crystals. An initial-boundary value problem is studied in a bounded domain with large data. The existence of a global weak solution is established through a three-level approximation, energy estimates, and weak convergence for the adiabatic exponent γ>3/2.
We introduce a new class of non-isothermal models describing the evolution of nematic liquid crystals and prove their consistency with the fundamental laws of classical Thermodynamics. The resulting system of equations captures all essential features of physically relevant models, in particular, the effect of stretching of the director field is taken into account. In addition, the associated initial-boundary value problem admits global-in-time weak solutions without any essential restrictions on the size of the initial data.
The present contribution investigates the well-posedness of a PDE system describing the evolution of a nematic liquid crystal flow under kinematic transports for molecules of different shapes. More in particular, the evolution of the {\em velocity field} $\ub$ is ruled by the Navier-Stokes incompressible system with a stress tensor exhibiting a special coupling between the transport and the induced terms. The dynamic of the {\em director field} $\bd$ is described by a variation of a parabolic Ginzburg-Landau equation with a suitable penalization of the physical constraint $|\bd|=1$. Such equat…
A model describing the evolution of a liquid crystal substance in the nematic phase is investigated in terms of three basic state variables: the {\it absolute temperature} $\teta$, the {\it velocity field} $\ub$, and the {\it director field} $\bd$, representing preferred orientation of molecules in a neighborhood of any point of a reference domain. The time evolution of the velocity field is governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes system, with a non-isotropic stress tensor depending on the gradients of the velocity and of the director field $\bd$, where the transport (viscosity) coefficie…
The general Ericksen-Leslie system for the flow of nematic liquid crystals is reconsidered in the non-isothermal case aiming for thermodynamically consistent models. The non-isothermal model is then investigated analytically. A fairly complete dynamic theory is developed by analyzing these systems as quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in an $L^p-L^q$-setting. First, the existence of a unique, local strong solution is proved. It is then shown that this solution extends to a global strong solution provided the initial data are close to an equilibrium or the solution is eventually bounded …
In this paper, we prove the stability of half-degree point defect profiles in $\mathbb{R}^2$ for the nematic liquid crystal within Landau-de Gennes model.
For suitable initial and boundary data, we construct infinitely many weak solutions to the nematic liquid crystal flows in dimension three. These solutions are in the axisymmetric class with bounded energy and backward bubbling at a large time.
In this paper, we establish the uniquely existence of the global mild solution to the nematic liquid crystal equations in Besov-Morrey spaces. Some self-similarity and large time behavior of the global mild solution are also investigated.
In this note we prove the existence and uniqueness of local maximal smooth solution of the stochastic simplified Ericksen-Leslie systems modelling the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals under stochastic perturbations.
We discuss a 3D model describing the time evolution of nematic liquid crystals in the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory, where the natural physical constraints are enforced by a singular free energy bulk potential proposed by J.M. Ball and A. Majumdar. The thermal effects are present through the component of the free energy that accounts for intermolecular interactions. The model is consistent with the general principle of thermodynamics and mathematically tractable. We identify the a priori estimates for the associated system of evolutionary partial differential equations and construct glo…
In this paper we obtain the wave equation modeling the nematic liquid-crystals in three space dimensions and study the lifespan of classical solution to Cauchy problem. The almost global existence to classical solution for small initial data will be presented.
In this paper, we prove the global existence of weak solutions to the non-isothermal nematic liquid crystal system on $\mathbb T^2$, based on a new approximate system which is different from the classical Ginzburg-Landau approximation. Local energy inequalities are employed to recover the estimates on the second order spacial derivatives of the director fields locally in time, which cannot be derived from the basic energy balance. It is shown that these weak solutions conserve the total energy and while the kinetic and potential energies transfer to the heat energy precisely. Furthermore, it i…
In this paper, we obtain optimal time-decay rates in $L^r(\mathbb R^3_+)$ for $r\ge 1$ of global strong solutions to the nematic liquid crystal flows in $\mathbb R^3_+$, provided the initial data has small $L^3(\mathbb R^3_+)$-norm.
In this paper, we prove the global existence and singularity formation for a wave system from modelling nematic liquid crystals in one space dimension. In our model, although the viscous damping term is included, the solution with smooth initial data still has gradient blowup in general, even when the initial energy is arbitrarily small.
In this paper, we consider the initial and boundary value problem of a simplified compressible nematic liquid crystal flow in $Ω\subset\mathbb R^3$. We establish the existence of global weak solutions, provided the initial orientational director field $d_0$ lies in the hemisphere $\mathbb S^2_+$.
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the compressible nematic liquid crystal flows in three-dimensional whole space. First of all, we establish the time decay rates for compressible nematic liquid crystal flows by the method of spectral analysis and energy estimates. Furthermore, we enhance the convergence rates for the higher-order spatial derivatives of density, velocity and director. Finally, the time decay rates of mixed space-time derivatives of solution are also established.
In this paper, we will establish the global existence of a suitable weak solution to the Erickson--Leslie system modeling hydrodynamics of nematic liquid crystal flows with kinematic transports for molecules of various shapes in ${\mathbb{R}^3}$, which is smooth away from a closed set of (parabolic) Hausdorff dimension at most $\frac{15}{7}$.
The study of hydrodynamics of liquid crystal leads to many fasci- nating mathematical problems, which has prompted various interesting works recently. This article reviews the static Oseen-Frank theory and surveys some recent progress on the existence, regularity, uniqueness, and large time asymp- totic of the hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals. We will also propose a few interesting questions for future investigations.
This article is focused on a multidimensional nonlinear variational wave equation which is the Euler-Lagrange equation of a variational principle arising form the theory of nematic liquid crystals. By using the method of characteristics, we show that the smooth solutions for the spherically-symmetric variational wave equation breakdown in finite time, even for the arbitrarily small initial energy.
In this paper, we derive the sharp interface model of the nematic-isotropic phase transition from the Landau-de Gennes theory by using the matched asymptotic expansion method. The model includes the evolution equation of the velocity and director field of the liquid crystal, the sharp interface and Young-Laplace jump condition on the interface.
In this paper, we establish a blow up criterion for the short time classical solution of the nematic liquid crystal ow, a simplified version of Ericksen-Leslie system modeling the hydrodynamic evolution of nematic liquid crystals, in dimensions two and three. More precisely, $0<T_*<+\infty$ is the maximal time interval iff (i) for $n=3$, $|ω|+|\nabla d|^2\notin L^1_tL^\infty_x(\mathbb R^3\times [0,T_*])$, and (ii) for $n=2$, $|\nabla|^2\notin L^1_tL^\infty_x(\mathbb R^2\times [0,T_*])$.
In this paper, we consider the short time strong solution to a simplified hydrodynamic flow modeling the compressible, nematic liquid crystal materials in dimension three. We establish a criterion for possible breakdown of such solutions at finite time in terms of the temporal integral of both the maximum norm of the deformation tensor of velocity gradient and the square of maximum norm of gradient of liquid crystal director field.
For any bounded, smooth domain $Ω\subset \R^2$, %(or $Ω=\R^2$), we will establish the weak compactness property of solutions to the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system for both uniaxial and biaxial nematics, and the convergence of weak solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau type nematic liquid crystal flow to a weak solution of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system as the parameter tends to zero. This is based on the compensated compactness property of the Ericksen stress tensors, which is obtained by the $L^p$-estimate of the Hopf differential for the Ericksen-Leslie system and the Pohozaev type argu…
We consider the Poiseuille flow of nematic liquid crystals via the full Ericksen-Leslie model. The model is described by a coupled system consisting of a heat equation and a quasilinear wave equation. In this paper, we will construct an example with a finite time cusp singularity due to the quasilinearity of the wave equation, extended from an earlier result on a special case.
In this paper, we consider the initial and boundary value problem of a simplified nematic liquid crystal flow in dimension three and construct two examples of finite time singularity. The first example is constructed within the class of axisymmetric solutions, while the second example is constructed for any generic initial data $(u_0,d_0)$ that has sufficiently small energy, and $d_0$ has a nontrivial topology
We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of a correlation function associated with a nematic liquid crystal system undergoing an isotropic-nematic phase transition following an instantaneous change of temperature. Within the setting of Landau-de Gennes theory, we confirm a hypothesis in the condensed matter physics literature on the average self-similar behaviour of the correlation function in the asymptotic regime at time infinity. In the final sections, we comment on other possible scaling behaviour of the correlation function.
In this paper we describe domain walls appearing in a thin, nematic liquid crystal sample subject to an external field with intensity close to the Fréedericksz transition threshold. Using the gradient theory of the phase transition adopted to this situation, we show that depending on the parameters of the system, domain walls occur in the bistable region or at the border between the bistable and the monostable region.
We study uniaxial energy-minimizers within the Landau-de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals on a three-dimensional spherical droplet subject to homeotropic boundary conditions. We work in the low-temperature regime and show that uniaxial energy-minimizers necessarily have the structure of the well-studied radial-hedgehog solution in the low-temperature limit. An immediate consequence of this result is that Landau-de Gennes energy minimizers cannot be purely uniaxial for sufficiently low temperatures.
In this paper, we investigate the uniform regularity and vanishing limit for the incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows in three dimensional bounded domain. It is shown that there exists a unique strong solution for the incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows with boundary condition in a finite time interval which is independent of the viscosity. The solution is uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space. Finally, we also study the convergence rate of the viscous solutions to the inviscid ones.
In this paper we derive LPS's criterion for the breakdown of classical solutions to the incompressible nematic liquid crystal flow, a simplified version of Ericksen-Leslie system modeling the hydrodynamic evolution of nematic liquid crystals in $\mathbb R^3$. We show that if $0<T<+\infty$} is the maximal time interval for the unique smooth solution $u\in C^\infty([0,T),\mathbb R^3)$, then $|u|+|\nabla d|\notin L^q([0,T],L^p(\mathbb R^3))$, where $p$ and $q$ safisfy the Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin's condition: $\frac{3}{p}+\frac{2}{q}=1$ and $p\in(3,+\infty]$
In this paper, we prove the global well posedness and the decay estimates for a $\mathbb Q$-tensor model of nematic liquid crystals in $\mathbb R^N$, $N \geq 3$. This system is coupled system by the Navier-Stokes equations with a parabolic-type equation describing the evolution of the director fields $\mathbb Q$. The proof is based on the maximal $L_p$ -$L_q$ regularity and the $L_p$ -$L_q$ decay estimates to the linearized problem.
In this paper, we establish an $ε$-regularity criterion for any weak solution $(u,d)$ to the nematic liquid crystal flow (1.1) such that $(u,\nabla d)\in L^p_tL^q_x$ for some $p\ge 2$ and $q\ge n$ satisfying the condition (1.2). As consequences, we prove the interior smoothness of any such a solution when $p>2$ and $q>n$. We also show that uniqueness holds for the class of weak solutions $(u,d)$ the Cauchy problem of the nematic liquid crystal flow (1.1) that satisfy $(u,\nabla d)\in L^p_tL^q_x$ for some $p>2$ and $q>n$ satisfying (1.2).
We consider the temporal decay estimates for weak solutions to the two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal flows, and we show that the energy norm of a global weak solution has non-uniform decay \begin{align*} \|u(t)\|_{L^{2}}+\|\nabla d(t)\|_{L^{2}}\rightarrow 0\quad \text{ as } t\rightarrow \infty, \end{align*} under suitable conditions on the initial data. We also show the exact rate of the decay (uniform decay) of the energy norm of the global weak solution.
We consider the initial-boundary value problem of a simplified nematic liquid crystal flow in a bounded, smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^2$. Given any $k$ distinct points in the domain, we develop a new {\em inner--outer gluing method} to construct solutions which blow up exactly at those $k$ points as $t$ goes to a finite time $T$. Moreover, we obtain a precise description of the blow-up.
We study a class of symmetric critical points in a variational $2D$ Landau - de Gennes model where the state of nematic liquid crystals is described by symmetric traceless $3\times 3$ matrices. These critical points play the role of topological point defects carrying a degree $\frac k 2$ for a nonzero integer $k$. We prove existence and study the qualitative behavior of these symmetric solutions. Our main result is the instability of critical points when $k\neq \pm 1, 0$.
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows in three-dimensional whole space. First of all, we establish the global existence of solution by energy method under assumption of small initial data. Furthermore, the time decay rates of velocity and director are built when the initial data belongs to $L^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$ additionally. Finally, one also constructs the time convergence rates for the mixed space-time derivatives of velocity and director.
Existence and uniqueness of local strong solution for the Beris--Edwards model for nematic liquid crystals, which couples the Navier-Stokes equations with an evolution equation for the Q-tensor, is established on a bounded domain in the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The classical Beris--Edwards model is enriched by including a dependence of the fluid viscosity on the Q-tensor. The proof is based on a linearization of the system and Banach's fixed-point theorem.
In this paper we establish the uniformity property of a simplified Ericksen-Leslie system modelling the hydrodynamics of nematic liquid crystals on the two dimensional unit sphere $S^2$, namely the uniform convergence in $L^2$ to a steady state exponentially as t tends to infinity. The main assumption, similar to Topping [15], concerns the equation of liquid crystal director $d$ and states that at infinity time, a weak limit $d_\infty$ and any bubble $ω_i$($1\le i\le l$) share a common orientation. As consequences, the uniformity property holds under various types of small initial data.
In this paper, we prove a Beale--Kato--Majda blow-up criterion in terms of the gradient of the velocity only for the strong solution to the 3-D compressible nematic liquid crystal flows with nonnegative initial densities. More precisely, the strong solution exists globally if the $L^{1}(0,T;L^{\infty})$-norm of the gradient of the velocity $u$ is bounded. Our criterion improves the recent result of X. Liu and L. Liu (\cite{LL}, A blow-up criterion for the compressible liquid crystals system, arXiv:1011.4399v2 [math-ph] 23 Nov. 2010).
We consider the hydrodynamics for the biaxial nematic phase characterized by a field of orthonormal frame, which can be derived from a molecular-theory-based tensor model. In dimension two and three, we establish the local well-posedness and the blow-up criterion for smooth solutions to the frame hydrodynamic model. Furthermore, we prove the global existence of weak solutions in $\mathbb{R}^2$ which are nonsmooth at finitely many singular times.
We investigate the structure of nematic liquid crystal thin films described by the Landau--de Gennes tensor-valued order parameter with Dirichlet boundary conditions of nonzero degree. We prove that as the elasticity constant goes to zero a limiting uniaxial texture forms with disclination lines corresponding to a finite number of defects, all of degree 1/2 or all of degree -1/2. We also state a result on the limiting behavior of minimizers of the Chern-Simons-Higgs model without magnetic field that follows from a similar proof.
We consider a 2D system that models the nematic liquid crystal flow through the Navier--Stokes equations suitably coupled with a transport-reaction-diffusion equation for the averaged molecular orientations. This system has been proposed as a reasonable approximation of the well-known Ericksen--Leslie system. Taking advantage of previous well-posedness results and proving suitable dissipative estimates, here we show that the system endowed with periodic boundary conditions is a dissipative dynamical system with a smooth global attractor of finite fractal dimension.
We study a simplified system of the original Ericksen--Leslie equations for the flow of nematic liquid crystals. This is a coupled non-parabolic dissipative dynamic system. We show the convergence of global classical solutions to single steady states as time goes to infinity (uniqueness of asymptotic limit) by using the Łojasiewicz--Simon approach. Moreover, we provide an estimate on the convergence rate. Finally, we discuss some possible extensions of the results to certain generalized problems with changing density or free-slip boundary condition.
This paper concerns the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional (2D) nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ with vacuum as far field density. It is proved that the 2D nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows admits a unique global strong solution provided the initial data density and the gradient of orientation decay not too slow at infinity, and the initial orientation satisfies a geometric condition (see \eqref{eq1.3}). In particular, the initial data can be arbitrarily large and the initial density may contain vacuum st…
In the first part of this paper, we will consider minimizing configurations of the Oseen-Frank energy functional $E(n, m)$ for a biaxial nematics $(n, m):Ω\to \mathbb S^2\times \mathbb S^2$ with $n\cdot m=0$ in dimension three, and establish that it is smooth off a closed set of $1$-dimension Hausdorff measure zero. In the second part, we will consider a simplified Ericksen-Leslie system for biaxial nematics $(n, m)$ in a two dimensional domain and establish the existence of a unique global weak solution $(u, n, m)$ that is smooth off at most finitely many singular times for any initial and bo…
We consider a nematic liquid crystal occupying the exterior region in R^3 outside of a spherical particle, with radial strong anchoring. Within the context of the Landau-de Gennes theory, we study minimizers subject to a strong external field, modelled by an additional term which favors nematic alignment parallel to the field. When the external field is high enough we obtain a scaling law for the energy. The energy scale corresponds to minimizers concentrating their energy in a boundary layer around the particle, with quadrupolar symmetry. This suggests the presence of a Saturn ring defect aro…
We study the asymptotic behavior of global solutions to hydrodynamical systems modeling the nematic liquid crystal flows under kinematic transports for molecules of different shapes. The coupling system consists of Navier-Stokes equations and kinematic transport equations for the molecular orientations. We prove the convergence of global strong solutions to single steady states as time tends to infinity as well as estimates on the convergence rate both in 2D for arbitrary regular initial data and in 3D for certain particular cases.
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible hydrodynamic flow of liquid crystals with periodic boundary conditions in R^N(N = 2, 3). It is rigorously shown that the local (and global) strong solution of the compressible system converges to the local (and global) strong solution of the incompressible system. Furthermore, the convergence rates are also obtained in some sense.
We study the effect of boundary rugosity in nematic liquid crystalline systems. We consider a highly general formulation of the problem, able to simultaneously deal with several liquid crystal theories. We use techniques of Gamma convergence and demonstrate that the effect of fine-scale surface oscillations may be replaced by an effective homogenised surface energy on a simpler domain. The homogenisation limit is then quantitatively studied in a simplified setting, obtaining convergence rates.
Under non-periodic boundary conditions, we consider the long-time behavior for stochastic 2D nematic liquid crystals flows with velocity and orientations perturbed by additive noise and multiplicative noise respectively. It is the first result for the long-time behavior of stochastic nematic liquid crystals under Dirichlet boundary condition for velocity field and Neumann boundary condition for orientation field.
We investigate stability properties of the radially symmetric solution corresponding to the vortex defect (so called "melting hedgehog") in the framework of the Landau - de Gennes model of nematic liquid crystals. We prove local stability of the melting hedgehog under arbitrary $Q$-tensor valued perturbations in the temperature regime near the critical supercooling temperature. As a consequence of our method, we also rediscover the loss of stability of the vortex defect in the deep nematic regime.
