Quantum chemistry simulations of some industrially relevant molecules are reported, employing variational quantum algorithms for near-term quantum devices. The energies and dipole moments are calculated along the dissociation curves for lithium hydride (LiH), hydrogen sulfide, lithium hydrogen sulfide and lithium sulfide. In all cases we focus on the breaking of a single bond, to obtain information about the stability of the molecular species being investigated. We calculate energies and a variety of electrostatic properties of these molecules using classical simulators of quantum devices, with up to 21 qubits for lithium sulfide. Moreover, we calculate the ground-state energy and dipole moment along the dissociation pathway of LiH using IBM quantum devices. This is the first example, to the best of our knowledge, of dipole moment calculations being performed on quantum hardware.
Composite materials achieved by including transition-metal oxides with different structures and morphologies in sulfur are suggested as scalable cathodes for high-energy lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. The composites contain 80 wt.% sulfur and 20 wt.% of either MnO2 or TiO2, leading to a sulfur content in the electrode of 64 wt.% and revealing a reversible, fast, and lowly polarized conversion process in the cell with limited interphase resistance. The S-TiO2 composite exhibits an excellent rate capability between C/10 and 2C, and a cycle life extended over 400 cycles at 2C, owing to the effe…
A full lithium-ion-sulfur cell with a remarkable cycle life was achieved by combining an environmentally sustainable biomass-derived sulfur-carbon cathode and a pre-lithiated silicon oxide anode. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry of the cathode evidenced the disordered nature of the carbon matrix in which sulfur was uniformly distributed with a weight content as high as 75%, while scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed the micrometric morphology of the composite. The sulfur-carbon electrode in the lithium half-cell exhib…
The performance of modern lithium-sulfur (Li/S) battery systems critically depends on the electrolyte and solvent compositions. For fundamental molecular insights and rational guidance of experimental developments, efficient and sufficiently accurate molecular simulations are thus in urgent need. Here, we construct a molecular dynamics (MD) computer simulation model of representative state-of-the art electrolyte-solvent systems for Li/S batteries constituted by lithium-bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) and LiNO3 electrolytes in mixtures of the organic solvents 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME)…
The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is a powerful, widely used method for preparing coatings of amphiphilic molecules at air/water interfaces with thickness control down to a single molecule. Here we report two new LB techniques designed to create ordered, multifunctional nanoparticle films on any non-reactive support. The methods utilize Marangoni stresses produced by surfactants at a fluid/solid/gas interface and self-assembly of nanoparticles to facilitate rapid creation of dense monolayers of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), metal-oxide nanoparticles, polymers, and combinations of the…
We demonstrate that photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) can be a potential novel imaging tool to investigate the Li metal dendrite growth, a critical issue leading to short circuit and even explosion of Li metal batteries. Our results suggest several advantages of PAM imaging of Li metal batteries: high resolution (micrometers), 3D imaging capability, deep penetration in a separator, and high contrast from bulk Li metal. Further, PAM has potential for in situ real-time imaging of Li metal batteries.
The lithium metal-solid-state electrolyte interface plays a critical role in the performance of solid-state batteries. However, operando characterization of the buried interface morphology in solid-state cells is particularly difficult because of the lack of direct optical access. Destructive techniques that require isolating the interface inadvertently modify the interface and cannot be used for operando monitoring. In this work, we introduce the concept of thermal wave sensing using modified 3-omega sensors that is attached to the outside of the lithium metal-solid state cells to non-invasiv…
In this article the Butler-Volmer equation used in describing Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is discussed. First, a complete mathematical model based on a macro-homogeneous approach developed by Neuman is presented. Two common mistakes found in the literature regarding a sign in a boundary conditions and the use of the transfer coefficient are mentioned. The paper focuses on the form of the Butler-Volmer equation in the model. It is shown how practical problems can be avoided by taking care in the form used, particularly to avoid difficulties when the solid particle in the electrodes approache…
Lithium metal batteries are seen as a critical piece towards electrifying aviation. During charging, plating of lithium metal, a critical failure mechanism, has been studied and mitigation strategies have been proposed. For electric aircraft, high discharge power requirements necessitate stripping of lithium metal in an uniform way and recent studies have identified the evolution of surface voids and pits as a potential failure mechanism. In this work, using density functional theory calculations and thermodynamic analysis, we investigate the discharge process on lithium metal surfaces. In par…
In this article, a pioneering study is presented where the intermittent current interruption method is used to characterize the aging behavior of commercial lithium ion batteries. With a very resource-efficient implementation, this method can track the battery resistive and diffusive behaviors over the entire state of charge range and be able to determine the aging throughout the lifetime of the batteries. In addition, the incremental capacity analysis can be carried out with the same data set. This method can provide measurement results with a high repeatability and produce equivalent informa…
In this article, a novel implementation of a widely used pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) model for lithium-ion battery simulation is presented with a transmission line circuit structure. This implementation represents an interplay between physical and equivalent circuit models. The discharge processes of an NMC-graphite lithium-ion battery under different currents are simulated, and it is seen the results from the circuit model agree well with the results obtained from a physical simulation carried out in COMSOL Multiphysics, including both terminal voltage and concentration distributions. Finall…
Dendrite free electrodeposition of lithium metal is necessary for the adoption of high energy density rechargeable lithium metal batteries. Here, we demonstrate a new mechanism of using a liquid crystalline electrolyte to suppress dendrite growth with a lithium metal anode. A nematic liquid crystalline electrolyte modifies the kinetics of electrodeposition by introducing additional overpotential due to its bulk distortion and anchoring free energy. By extending the phase-field model, we simulate the morphological evolution of the metal anode and explore the role of bulk distortion and anchorin…
To develop a high-density and long-life lithium-ion battery, a technology is needed that allows non-destructive visualization of the spatial distribution of deteriorated parts after cycle test. In the present study, we measured the distribution of the magnetic field leaking from the lithium-ion battery during its operation. Based on the measurement results, we evaluated the current density distribution inside a battery using the electric current reconstruction process. With respect to the changes in an internal state of the lithium-ion battery associated with cycle deterioration, we successful…
Lithium-metal batteries employing concentrated glyme-based electrolytes and different cathode chemistries are herein evaluated in view of a safe use of the highly energetic alkali-metal anode. Li-ion batteries with nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cathode and graphite anode are popularly used in portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. Calendar loss of the lithium ion battery is a dominating factor in battery degradation. However, few modeling work was reported on studying the calendar capacity loss of NMC-graphite Li-ion batteries. In this work, an electrochemical model for NMC-graphite Li-ion battery was developed to investigate its calendar loss behavior. Various factors affecting the calendar loss of the NMC-graphite batteries were systematically investigated, with the re…
In-orbit satellite REIMEI, developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, has been relying on off-the-shelf Li-ion batteries since its launch in 2005. The performance and durability of Li-ion batteries is impacted by various degradation mechanisms, one of which is the growth of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). In this article, we analyse the REIMEI battery and parameterize a full-cell model with electrochemical cycling data, computer tomography images, and capacity fading experiments using image processing and surrogate optimization. We integrate a recent model for SEI growth into…
This paper presents the current state of mathematical modelling of the electrochemical behaviour of lithium-ion batteries as they are charged and discharged. It reviews the models developed by Newman and co-workers, both in the cases of dilute and moderately-concentrated electrolytes and indicates the modelling assumptions required for their development. Particular attention is paid to the interface conditions imposed between the electrolyte and the active electrode material; necessary conditions are derived for one of these, the Butler-Volmer relation, in order to ensure physically realistic …
This paper proposes a fully unsupervised methodology for the reliable extraction of latent variables representing the characteristics of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data using information maximizing generative adversarial networks. Meaningful representations can be obtained from EIS data even when measured with direct current and without relaxation, which are difficult to express when using circuit models. The extracted latent variables were investigated as capacity degradation progressed and were used to estimate the discharge capacity of the…
Non-destructive determination of lithium distribution in a working battery is key for addressing both efficiency and safety issues. Although various techniques have been developed to map the lithium distribution in electrodes, these methods are mostly applicable to test cells. Here we propose the use of high-energy x-ray Compton scattering spectroscopy to measure the local lithium concentration in closed electrochemical cells. A combination of experimental measurements and parallel first-principles computations is used to show that the shape parameter S of the Compton profile is linearly propo…
In this article, we derive and discuss a physics-based model for impedance spectroscopy of lithium batteries. Our model for electrochemical cells with planar electrodes takes into account the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) as porous surface film. We present two improvements over standard impedance models. Firstly, our model is based on a consistent description of lithium transport through electrolyte and SEI. We use well-defined transport parameters, e.g., transference numbers, and consider convection of the center-of-mass. Secondly, we solve our model equations analytically and state the …
Several active areas of research in novel energy storage technologies, including three-dimensional solid state batteries and passivation coatings for reactive battery electrode components, require conformal solid state electrolytes. We describe an atomic layer deposition (ALD) process for a member of the lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) family, which is employed as a thin film lithium-conducting solid electrolyte. The reaction between lithium tert-butoxide (LiO$^t$Bu) and diethyl phosphoramidate (DEPA) produces conformal, ionically conductive thin films with a stoichiometry close to Li$_2…
Electrolyte stability against oxidation is one of the important factors limiting the development of high energy density batteries. HOMO level of solvent molecules has been successfully used for understanding trends in their oxidative stability but assumes a non-interacting environment. However, solvent HOMO levels are renormalized due to molecules in their solvation shells. In this work, we first demonstrate an inexpensive and accurate method to determine the HOMO level of solvent followed by simple descriptors for renormalization of HOMO level due to different electrolyte components. The desc…
Lithium metal cells are key towards achieving high specific energy and energy density for electrification of transportation and aviation. Anode-free cells are the limiting case of lithium metal cells involving no excess lithium and the highest possible specific energy. In addition, anode-free cells are easier, cheaper and safer as they avoid handling and manufacturing of lithium metal foils. Issues related to dendrite growth and poor cycling are magnified in anode-free cells due to lack of excess lithium. Electrolyte and current collector surface play a crucial role in affecting the cycling pe…
We have demonstrated a fiber lithium ion battery (LIB) fabricated by co-twisting a LiFePO4 composite-coated copper wire (cathode) together with an aluminum wire (anode). An all-solid LiPF6 composite layer functioning both as the electrolyte and battery separator is deposited onto the two electrode wires before twisting. To characterize the electrochemical properties of the battery, charge-discharge tests with different C-rates are performed. The fiber LIB has an open-circuit voltage of ~3.4 V, and the typical specific capacity is found to be ~87 mAhg-1 at 0.5 C charge-discharge rate. Besides, …
The electrolytes used in Lithium Ion Batteries (LIBs) such as LiBF4, LiPF6 etc. are Li-salts of some complex anions, BF4-, PF6- etc. The investigation shows that the vertical detachment energy (VDE) of these anions exceeds to that of halogen, and therefore they behave as superhalogen anions. Consequently, it might be possible to design new electrolytic salts using other superhalogen anions. We have explored this possibility using Li-salts of various superhalogen anions such as BO2-, AlH4-, TiH5- and VH6- as well as hyperhalogen anions, BH4-y(BH4)y-(y = 1 to 4). Our density functional calculati…
We present a comparative ab initio study of Li and Na insertion in molecular (van der Waals) crystals of TCNE (tetracyanoethylene) as well as in covalent Li/Na-TCNE crystals. We confirm the structure of previously synthesized (covalent) Li-TCNE crystal as well as predict the existence of its Na-TCNE analogue. In the molecular/covalent TCNE crystals, insertion sites are identified with the binding energy of Li and Na up to 2.7/1.8 and 2.6/1.8 eV stronger than Li and Na cohesive energy, respectively, in dilute concentrations. Up to 5.5/2.5 and 3/2 Li and Na atoms per TCNE unit can be inserted in…
In lithium ion batteries, Li+ intercalation and processes associated with passivation of electrodes are governed by applied voltages, which are in turn associated with free energy changes of Li+ transfer (Delta G_t) between the solid and liquid phases. Using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and thermodynamic integration techniques, we compute Delta G_t for the virtual transfer of a Li+ from a LiC(6) anode slab, with pristine basal planes exposed, to liquid ethylene carbonate confined in a nanogap. The onset of delithiation, at Delta G_t=0, is found to occur on LiC(6) anodes with negatively …
The pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) model is a complex mathematical model that can capture the electrochemical processes in Li-ion batteries. However, the model also brings a heavy computational burden. Many simplifications to the model have been introduced in the literature to reduce the complexity. We present a method for fast computation of the P2D model which can be used when simplifications are not accurate enough. By rearranging the calculations, we reduce the complexity of the linear algebra problem. We also employ automatic differentiation, using an open source package JAX for robustness,…
The existence of passivating layers at the interfaces is a major factor enabling modern lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Their properties determine the cycle life, performance, and safety of batteries. A special case is the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a heterogeneous multi-component film formed due to the instability and subsequent decomposition of the electrolyte at the surface of the anode. The SEI acts as a passivating layer that hinders further electrolyte disintegration, which is detrimental to the Coulombic efficiency. In this work, we use first-principles simulations to investiga…
The ever-increasing number of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has presented a serious waste-management challenge. Aluminium and copper current collectors are important components in LIBs and take up a weight percentage of more than 15%. Direct reuse of current collectors can effectively reduce LIB waste and provide an alternative renewable source of aluminium and copper. Besides, it also prevents long manufacturing processes and associated energy input and material consumption. However, there is a lack of work on the direct reuse of current collectors in the literature. Herein, aluminium an…
The widely used Doyler-Fuller-Newman (DFN) model for lithium-ion batteries is too computationally expensive for certain applications, which has motivated the appearance of a plethora of simpler models. These models are usually posed in an ad hoc manner, leading to inconsistencies with the DFN model and to multiple formulations of the same model, with the Single Particle Model (SPM) being a very good example of the latter. In this work, we discuss the concept of SPM-type models showing that, despite the multiple formulations found in the literature, these models always follow the same structure…
The concept of green in a battery involves the chemical nature of electrodes and electrolytes as well as the economic sustainability of the cell. Although these aspects are typically discussed separately, they are deeply interconnected: indeed, a new electrolyte can allow the use of different cathodes with higher energy, lower cost or more pronounced environmental compatibility. We focus on alternative class of electrolyte solutions for lithium batteries formed by dissolving LiX salts in glyme solvents, i.e., organic ethers with the molecular formula CH3O[CH2CH2O]nCH3 differing by chain length…
Lithium-ion secondary batteries have been used in a wide variety of purposes, such as for powering mobile devices and electric vehicles, but their performance should be improved. One of the factors that limits their performance is the non-uniformity of the chemical reaction in the process of charging and discharging. Many attempts have been made to elucidate the mechanism behind this reaction non-uniformity. In this paper, to detect non-uniformity in various physical properties from Co K-edge two-dimensional X-ray absorption spectroscopy (2D-XAS) images of lithium ion batteries, we propose a m…
We propose fabrication of the fiber-shaped lithium ion batteries assembled by twisting a cathode filament together with an anode filament. The cathode filament is fabricated by depositing a LiFePO4 (LFP)-composite layer onto a steel-filled polyester conductive thread (SPCT). As anode filaments, we propose several scenarios including a Li4Ti5O12 (LTO)-composite coated SPCT (dip-and-dry deposition), a tin-coated SPCT (PVD deposition) as well as a bare tin wire. An electrolyte composite layer consisting of LiPF6 and polyethylene oxide (PEO) is then deposited onto both the anode and cathode filame…
Fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) shows promise as an electrolyte additive for improving passivating solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) films on silicon anodes used in lithium ion batteries (LIB). We apply density functional theory (DFT), ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), and quantum chemistry techniques to examine excess-electron-induced FEC molecular decomposition mechanisms that lead to FEC-modified SEI. We consider one- and two-electron reactions using cluster models and explicit interfaces between liquid electrolyte and model Li(x)Si(y) surfaces, respectively. FEC is found to exhibit more…
