Hand gesture recognition is a strenuous task to solve in videos. In this paper, we use a 3D residual attention network which is trained end to end for hand gesture recognition. Based on the stacked multiple attention blocks, we build a 3D network which generates different features at each attention block. Our 3D attention based residual network (Res3ATN) can be built and extended to very deep layers. Using this network, an extensive analysis is performed on other 3D networks based on three publicly available datasets. The Res3ATN network performance is compared to C3D, ResNet-10, and ResNext-101 networks. We also study and evaluate our baseline network with different number of attention blocks. The comparison shows that the 3D residual attention network with 3 attention blocks is robust in attention learning and is able to classify the gestures with better accuracy, thus outperforming existing networks.

Ego hand gestures can be used as an interface in AR and VR environments. While the context of an image is important for tasks like scene understanding, object recognition, image caption generation and activity recognition, it plays a minimal role in ego hand gesture recognition. An ego hand gesture used for AR and VR environments conveys the same information regardless of the background. With this idea in mind, we present our work on ego hand gesture recognition that produces embeddings from RBG images with ego hands, which are simultaneously used for ego hand segmentation and ego gesture reco…
Wireless signal-based gesture recognition has promoted the developments of VR game, smart home, etc. However, traditional approaches suffer from the influence of the domain gap. Low recognition accuracy occurs when the recognition model is trained in one domain but is used in another domain. Though some solutions, such as adversarial learning, transfer learning and body-coordinate velocity profile, have been proposed to achieve cross-domain recognition, these solutions more or less have flaws. In this paper, we define the concept of domain gap and then propose a more promising solution, namely…

Defining methods for the automatic understanding of gestures is of paramount importance in many application contexts and in Virtual Reality applications for creating more natural and easy-to-use human-computer interaction methods. In this paper, we present a method for the recognition of a set of non-static gestures acquired through the Leap Motion sensor. The acquired gesture information is converted in color images, where the variation of hand joint positions during the gesture are projected on a plane and temporal information is represented with color intensity of the projected points. The …

Current UAV-recorded datasets are mostly limited to action recognition and object tracking, whereas the gesture signals datasets were mostly recorded in indoor spaces. Currently, there is no outdoor recorded public video dataset for UAV commanding signals. Gesture signals can be effectively used with UAVs by leveraging the UAVs visual sensors and operational simplicity. To fill this gap and enable research in wider application areas, we present a UAV gesture signals dataset recorded in an outdoor setting. We selected 13 gestures suitable for basic UAV navigation and command from general aircra…
3D convolutional networks is a good means to perform tasks such as video segmentation into coherent spatio-temporal chunks and classification of them with regard to a target taxonomy. In the chapter we are interested in the classification of continuous video takes with repeatable actions, such as strokes of table tennis. Filmed in a free marker less ecological environment, these videos represent a challenge from both segmentation and classification point of view. The 3D convnets are an efficient tool for solving these problems with window-based approaches.

Gesture recognition is a fundamental tool to enable novel interaction paradigms in a variety of application scenarios like Mixed Reality environments, touchless public kiosks, entertainment systems, and more. Recognition of hand gestures can be nowadays performed directly from the stream of hand skeletons estimated by software provided by low-cost trackers (Ultraleap) and MR headsets (Hololens, Oculus Quest) or by video processing software modules (e.g. Google Mediapipe). Despite the recent advancements in gesture and action recognition from skeletons, it is unclear how well the current state-…

Human gesture recognition using millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals provides attractive applications including smart home and in-car interfaces. In this paper, we propose DI-Gesture, a domain-independent and real-time mmWave gesture recognition system. Specifically, we first derive signal variations corresponding to human gestures with…
Recognition of hand gestures is one of the most fundamental tasks in human-robot interaction. Sparse representation based methods have been widely used due to their efficiency and low demands on the training data. Recently, nonconvex regularization techniques including the $\ell_{1-2}$ regularization have been proposed in the image processing community to promote sparsity while achieving efficient performance. In this paper, we propose a vision-based hand gesture recognition model based on the $\ell_{1-2}$ regularization, which is solved by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM…

In this paper we present architectures based on deep neural nets for gesture recognition in videos, which are invariant to local scaling. We amalgamate autoencoder and predictor architectures using an adaptive weighting scheme coping with a reduced size labeled dataset, while enriching our models from enormous unlabeled sets. We further improve robustness to lighting conditions by introducing a new adaptive filer based on temporal local scale normalization. We provide superior results over known methods, including recent reported approaches based on neural nets.
Gesture recognition is a very essential technology for many wearable devices. While previous algorithms are mostly based on statistical methods including the hidden Markov model, we develop two dynamic hand gesture recognition techniques using low complexity recurrent neural network (RNN) algorithms. One is based on video signal and employs a combined structure of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and an RNN. The other uses accelerometer data and only requires an RNN. Fixed-point optimization that quantizes most of the weights into two bits is conducted to optimize the amount of memory size…
We propose a novel appearance-based gesture recognition algorithm using compressed domain signal processing techniques. Gesture features are extracted directly from the compressed measurements, which are the block averages and the coded linear combinations of the image sensor's pixel values. We also improve both the computational efficiency and the memory requirement of the previous DTW-based K-NN gesture classifiers. Both simulation testing and hardware implementation strongly support the proposed algorithm.

Sensors on mobile devices---accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure meters, and GPS---invite new applications in gesture recognition, gaming, and fitness tracking. However, programming them remains challenging because human gestures captured by sensors are noisy. This paper illustrates that noisy gestures degrade training and classification accuracy for gesture recognition in state-of-the-art deterministic Hidden Markov Models (HMM). We introduce a new statistical quantization approach that mitigates these problems by (1) during training, producing gesture-specific codebooks, HMMs, and error mode…

However, most literature work focuses on solutions with a limited range that is lower than a meter. We propose a novel architecture for a long-range (1m - 2m) gesture recognition solution that leverages a point cloud-based cross-lear…
