Verification of an identity based on the human face radar signature in mmwave is studied. The chipset for 802.11ad/y networking that is cable of operating in a radar mode is used. A dataset with faces of 200 different persons was collected for the testing. Our preliminary study shows promising results for the application of autoencoder for the setup at hand.
Transformers combined with convolutional encoders have been recently used for hand gesture recognition (HGR) using micro-Doppler signatures. We propose a vision-transformer-based architecture for HGR with multi-antenna continuous-wave Doppler radar receivers. The proposed architecture consists of three modules: a convolutional encoderdecoder, an attention module with three transformer layers, and a multi-layer perceptron. The novel convolutional decoder helps to feed patches with larger sizes to the attention module for improved feature extraction. Experimental results obtained with a dataset …

In this paper, a real-time signal processing frame-work based on a 60 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar system to recognize gestures is proposed. In order to improve the robustness of the radar-based gesture recognition system, the proposed framework extracts a comprehensive hand profile, including range, Doppler, azimuth and elevation, over multiple measurement-cycles and encodes them into a feature cube. Rather than feeding the range-Doppler spectrum sequence into a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) connected with recurrent neural networks, the proposed framework tak…
Gesture recognition is one of the most intuitive ways of interaction and has gathered particular attention for human computer interaction. Radar sensors possess multiple intrinsic properties, such as their ability to work in low illumination, harsh weather conditions, and being low-cost and compact, making them highly preferable for a gesture recognition solution. However, most literature work focuses on solutions with a limited range that is lower than a meter. We propose a novel architecture for a long-range (1m - 2m) gesture recognition solution that leverages a point cloud-based cross-lear…

In this article, the first considerations for the 5G New Radio (NR) physical layer evolution to support beyond 52.6GHz communications are provided. In addition, the performance of both OFDM based and DFT-s-OFDM based networks are evaluated with special emphasis on the phase noise (PN) induced distortion. It is shown that DFT-s-OFDM is more robust against PN under 5G NR Release 15 assumptions, namely regarding the supported phase tracking reference signal (PTRS) designs, since it enables more effective PN mitigation directly in the time domain. To further improve the PN compensation capabilitie…
The evolution of wireless communication systems towards millimeter-wave ($30-100$ GHz) and sub-THz ($>100$ GHz) frequency bands highlighted the need for accurate and fast beam management and a proactive link-blockage prediction in high-mobility scenarios. Joint Communication and Sensing (JC\&S) systems aim at equipping communication terminals with sensing capabilities using the same time/frequency/space communication resources to solve, or alleviate, the aforementioned issues. For an efficient implementation, a suitable waveform design that combines communication and sensing capabilities is of…

In this paper, the potential of extending 5G New Radio physical layer solutions to support communications in sub-THz frequencies is studied. More specifically, we introduce the status of third generation partnership project studies related to operation on frequencies beyond 52.6 GHz and note also the recent proposal on spectrum horizons provided by federal communications commission (FCC) related to experimental licenses on 95 GHz - 3 THz frequency band. Then, we review the power amplifier (PA) efficiency and output power challenge together with the increased phase noise (PN) distortion effect …

Realization of qubit gate sequences require coherent microwave control pulses with programmable amplitude, duration, spacing and phase. We propose an SRAM based arbitrary waveform generator for cryogenic control of spin qubits. We demonstrate in this work, the cryogenic operation of a fully programmable radio frequency arbitrary waveform generator in 14 nm FinFET technology. The waveform sequence from a control processor can be stored in an SRAM memory array, which can be programmed in real time. The waveform pattern is converted to microwave pulses by a source-series-terminated digital to ana…
