Force myography has recently gained increasing attention for hand gesture recognition tasks. However, there is a lack of publicly available benchmark data, with most existing studies collecting their own data often with custom hardware and for varying sets of gestures. This limits the ability to compare various algorithms, as well as the possibility for research to be done without first needing to collect data oneself. We contribute to the advancement of this field by making accessible a benchmark dataset collected using a commercially available sensor setup from 20 persons covering 18 unique gestures, in the hope of allowing further comparison of results as well as easier entry into this field of research. We illustrate one use-case for such data, showing how we can improve gesture recognition accuracy by utilising transfer learning to incorporate data from multiple other persons. This also illustrates that the dataset can serve as a benchmark dataset to facilitate research on transfer learning algorithms.

Current UAV-recorded datasets are mostly limited to action recognition and object tracking, whereas the gesture signals datasets were mostly recorded in indoor spaces. Currently, there is no outdoor recorded public video dataset for UAV commanding signals. Gesture signals can be effectively used with UAVs by leveraging the UAVs visual sensors and operational simplicity. To fill this gap and enable research in wider application areas, we present a UAV gesture signals dataset recorded in an outdoor setting. We selected 13 gestures suitable for basic UAV navigation and command from general aircra…
Surface Electromyography (sEMG/EMG) is to record muscles' electrical activity from a restricted area of the skin by using electrodes. The sEMG-based gesture recognition is extremely sensitive of inter-session and inter-subject variances. We propose a model and a deep-learning-based domain adaptation method to approximate the domain shift for recognition accuracy enhancement. Analysis performed on sparse and HighDensity (HD) sEMG public datasets validate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

The use of hand gestures provides a natural alternative to cumbersome interface devices for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) systems. As the technology advances and communication between humans and machines becomes more complex, HCI systems should also be scaled accordingly in order to accommodate the introduced complexities. In this paper, we propose a methodology to scale hand gestures by forming them with predefined gesture-phonemes, and a convolutional neural network (CNN) based framework to recognize hand gestures by learning only their constituents of gesture-phonemes. We propose a new metric to measure domain divergence and a new domain adaptation method for time-series classification. The metric belongs to the class of probability distributions-based metrics, is transductive, and does not assume the presence of source data samples. The 2-stage method utilizes an improved autoregressive, RNN-based architecture with deep/non-linear transformation. We assess our metric and the performance of our model in the context of sEMG/EMG-based gesture recognition under inter-session and inter-subject domain shifts.

Gesture recognition is a fundamental tool to enable novel interaction paradigms in a variety of application scenarios like Mixed Reality environments, touchless public kiosks, entertainment systems, and more. Recognition of hand gestures can be nowadays performed directly from the stream of hand skeletons estimated by software provided by low-cost trackers (Ultraleap) and MR headsets (Hololens, Oculus Quest) or by video processing software modules (e.g. Google Mediapipe). Despite the recent advancements in gesture and action recognition from skeletons, it is unclear how well the current state-…
Wireless signal-based gesture recognition has promoted the developments of VR game, smart home, etc. However, traditional approaches suffer from the influence of the domain gap. Low recognition accuracy occurs when the recognition model is trained in one domain but is used in another domain. Though some solutions, such as adversarial learning, transfer learning and body-coordinate velocity profile, have been proposed to achieve cross-domain recognition, these solutions more or less have flaws. In this paper, we define the concept of domain gap and then propose a more promising solution, namely…

In order to extract discriminative features from the kinematic signals and boost recognition accuracy, we propose a multi-task recurrent neural network for simultaneous recognition of surgical gestures and estimation of a novel formulation of surgical task progress. Gesture recognition is getting more and more popular due to various application possibilities in human-machine interaction. Existing multi-modal gesture recognition systems take multi-modal data as input to improve accuracy, but such methods require more modality sensors, which will greatly limit their application scenarios. Therefore we propose an end-to-end multi-task learning framework in training 2D convolutional neural networks. The framework can use the depth modality to improve accuracy during training and save costs by using only RGB modality during inference. Our framework is trained …

To bridge it, this work combines image entropy and density clustering to exploit the key frames from hand gesture video for further feature extraction, which can improve the efficiency of recognition. Moreover, a feature fusion stra…

We present an application of gesture recognition using an extension of Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to recognize behavioural patterns of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We propose an extension of DTW using one-class classifiers in order to be able to encode the variability of a gesture category, and thus, perform an alignment between a gesture sample and a gesture class. We model the set of gesture samples of a certain gesture category using either GMMs or an approximation of Convex Hulls. Thus, we add a theoretical contribution to classical warping path in DTW by including loca…

Human gesture recognition has drawn much attention in the area of computer vision. However, the performance of gesture recognition is always influenced by some gesture-irrelevant factors like the background and the clothes of performers. Therefore, focusing on the regions of hand/arm is important to the gesture recognition. Meanwhile, a more adaptive architecture-searched network structure can also perform better than the block-fixed ones like Resnet since it increases the diversity of features in different stages of the network better. In this paper, we propose a regional attention with archi…

We look at the problem of developing a compact and accurate model for gesture recognition from videos in a deep-learning framework. Towards this we propose a joint 3DCNN-LSTM model that is end-to-end trainable and is shown to be better suited to capture the dynamic information in actions. The solution achieves close to state-of-the-art accuracy on the ChaLearn dataset, with only half the model size. We also explore ways to derive a much more compact representation in a knowledge distillation framework followed by model compression. The final model is less than $1~MB$ in size, which is less tha…

New sensor and control technology enhanced the functionality and usefulness of artificial limbs to the point that complex movements, such as grasping, can be performed to a limited extent. To date, the most successful results were achieved by applying recurrent neural networks (RNNs). However, in the domain of artificial hands, experiments so far were limited to non-mobile wrists, which significantly reduces the functionality of such prostheses. In this paper, for the first time, we present empirical results on gesture…

Both simulation testing and hardware implementation strongly support the proposed algorithm.
