We demonstrate that magnetic skyrmions with a mean diameter around 60 nm can be stabilized at room temperature and zero external magnetic field in an exchange-biased Pt/Co/NiFe/IrMn multilayer stack. This is achieved through an advanced optimization of the multilayer stack composition in order to balance the different magnetic energies controlling the skyrmion size and stability. Magnetic imaging is performed both with magnetic force microscopy and scanning Nitrogen-Vacancy magnetometry, the latter providing unambiguous measurements at zero external magnetic field. In such samples, we show that exchange bias provides an immunity of the skyrmion spin texture to moderate external magnetic field, in the tens of mT range, which is an important feature for applications as memory devices. These results establish exchange-biased multilayer stacks as a promising platform towards the effective realization of memory and logic devices based on magnetic skyrmions.
Ultrathin ferromagnets with frustrated exchange and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can support topological solitons such as skyrmions and antiskyrmions, which are metastable and can be considered particle-antiparticle counterparts. When spin-orbit torques are applied, the motion of an isolated antiskyrmion driven beyond its Walker limit can generate skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs. Here, we use atomistic spin dynamics simulations to shed light on the scattering processes involved in this pair generation. Under certain conditions a proliferation of these particles and antiparticles can appea…
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers. Since their first observation at room temperature, progress has been made in their current-induced manipulation, with fast motion reported in stray-field-coupled multilayers. However, the complex spin textures with hybrid chiralities and large power dissipation in these multilayers limit their practical implementation and the fundamental understanding of their dynamics. Here, we report on the current-driven motion of Néel skyrmions with diameters in the 100-nm range in an ultrathin Pt/Co/MgO …
We use the continuum micromagnetic framework to derive the formulas for compact skyrmion lifetime due to thermal noise in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with relatively weak interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In the absence of a saddle point connecting the skyrmion solution to the ferromagnetic state, we interpret the skyrmion collapse event as ``capture by an absorber'' at microscale. This yields an explicit Arrhenius collapse rate with both the barrier height and the prefactor as functions of all the material parameters, as well as the dynamical paths to collapse.
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically nontrivial spin textures which hold great promise as stable information carriers in spintronic devices at the nanoscale. One of the major challenges for developing novel skyrmion-based memory and logic devices is fast and controlled creation of magnetic skyrmions at ambient conditions. Here we demonstrate the single ultrafast (35-fs) laser pulse-induced generation of skyrmion bubbles and skyrmion bubble lattices from a ferromagnetic state in sputtered ultrathin magnetic films at room temperature. The skyrmion bubble density increases with the laser fluence …
Nitrogen-vacancy magnetic microscopy is employed in quenching mode as a non-invasive, high resolution tool to investigate the morphology of isolated skyrmions in ultrathin magnetic films. The skyrmion size and shape are found to be strongly affected by local pinning effects and magnetic field history. Micromagnetic simulations including static disorder, based on a physical model of grain-to-grain thickness variations, reproduce all experimental observations and reveal the key role of disorder and magnetic history in the stabilization of skyrmions in ultrathin magnetic films. This work opens th…
The dynamics of individual magnetic skyrmions confined in ultrathin film dots is studied theoretically. The systems considered are transition metal ferromagnets possessing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and particular attention is given to the dynamic response of the skyrmions to perpendicular driving fields. By using micromagnetics simulations, it is shown that breathing modes can hybridize with geometrically-quantized spin wave eigenmodes of the circular dots considered, leading to distinct features in the power spectrum that differ to the behavior expected for uniformly magnetized system…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-protected spin textures that exhibit fascinating physical behaviors and large potential in highly energy efficient spintronic device applications. The main obstacles so far are that skyrmions have been observed in only a few exotic materials and at low temperatures, and manipulation of individual skyrmions has not yet been achieved. Here, we report the observation of stable magnetic skyrmions at room temperature in ultrathin transition metal ferromagnets with magnetic transmission soft x-ray microscopy. We demonstrate the ability to generate stable skyrmion…
Collective spin ensembles known as skyrmion bubbles can exist in ultrathin magnetic film heterostructures and promise miniscule diameters and low-power all-electrical manipulation. The nucleation, identification and manipulation of skyrmions is of great interest, in part, because of their non-trivial topology. Here we ascertain the topology of 100 nm isolated hedgehog skyrmion bubbles and probe their response to external fields at room temperature in [ Pt \ Co (0.8 nm) \ Ir ] films. We find that structural disorder can stabilize skyrmion bubble states which exhibit creep-like domain wall motio…
To realize future spintronic applications with magnetic skyrmions -- topologically nontrivial swirling spin structures -- it is essential to achieve efficient writing and deleting capabilities of these quasi-particles. Electric-field assisted nucleation and annihilation is a promising route, however, the understanding of the underlying microscopic mechanisms is still limited. Here, we show how the stability of individual magnetic skyrmions in an ultrathin transition-metal film can be controlled via external electric fields. We demonstrate based on density functional theory that it is important…
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin structures with a whirling configuration. Their topological properties, nanometer size and the fact that they can be moved by small current densities have opened a new paradigm for the manipulation of magnetisation at the nanoscale. To date, chiral skyrmion structures have been experimentally demonstrated only in bulk materials and in epitaxial ultrathin films and under external magnetic field or at low temperature. Here, we report on the observation of stable skyrmions in sputtered ultrathin Pt/Co/MgO nanostructures, at room temperature and zero applied magn…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin structures having immense potential for energy efficient spintronic devices. However, observations of skyrmions at room temperature are limited to patterned nanostructures. Here, we report the observation of stable skyrmions in unpatterned Ta/Co2FeAl(CFA)/MgO thin film heterostructures at room temperature and in zero external magnetic field employing magnetic force microscopy. The skyrmions are observed in a trilayer structure comprised of heavy metal (HM)/ferromagnet (FM)/Oxide interfaces which result in strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interact…
Magnetic skyrmions are localized nanometer-sized spin configurations with particle_like properties, which are envisioned to be used as bits in next_generation information technology. An essential step towards future skyrmion-based applications is to engineer key magnetic parameters for developing and stabilizing individual magnetic skyrmions. Here we demonstrate the tuning of the non_collinear magnetic state of an Fe double layer on an Ir111 substrate by loading the sample with atomic hydrogen. By using spin_polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we discover that the hydrogenated system supp…
We observe metastable localized spin configurations with topological charges ranging from $Q=-3$ to $Q=2$ in a (Pt$_{0.95}$Ir$_{0.05}$)/Fe bilayer on Pd$(111)$ surface by performing spin dynamics simulations, using a classical Hamiltonian parametrized by ab initio calculations. We demonstrate that the frustration of the isotropic exchange interactions is responsible for the creation of these various types of skyrmionic structures. The Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya interaction present due to the breaking of inversion symmetry at the surface energetically favors skyrmions with $Q=-1$, distorts the shape…
We present a combined analytical and numerical micromagnetic study of the equilibrium energy, size and shape of anti-skyrmionic magnetic configurations. Anti-skyrmions can be stabilized when the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction has opposite signs along two orthogonal in-plane directions, breaking the magnetic circular symmetry. We compare the equilibrium energy, size and shape of anti-skyrmions and skyrmions that are stabilized respectively in environments with anisotropic and isotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, but with the same strength of the magnetic interactions. When the dipolar…
A combined approach using first-principles calculations and spin dynamics simulations is applied to study Ni/Ir$_{n}$/Pt(111) ($n=0,1,2$) films. The lowest-energy states are predicted to be spin-spirals but with a minute (of the order of a few $μ$eV/atom) energy difference with skyrmionic states. The spontaneous low temperature skyrmions, with $\sim15$ nm to $\sim35$ nm size, arise from a large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) and Heisenberg exchange interactions ratio and, in particular, from a large in-plane DM vector component for nearest neighbors. The skyrmions become larger and more dispersed …
The proposal that very small Néel skyrmions can form in SrRuO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ epitaxial bilayers and that the electric field-effect can be used to manipulate these skyrmions in gated devices strongly stimulated the recent research of SrRuO$_3$ heterostructures. A strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, combined with the breaking of inversion symmetry, was considered as the driving force for the formation of skyrmions in SrRuO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ bilayers. Here, we investigated nominally symmetric heterostructures in which an ultrathin ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ layer is sandwiched between l…
A theoretical study of the current-driven dynamics of magnetic skyrmions in disordered perpendicularly-magnetized ultrathin films is presented. The disorder is simulated as a granular structure in which the local anisotropy varies randomly from grain to grain. The skyrmion velocity is computed for different disorder parameters and ensembles. Similar behavior is seen for spin-torques due to in-plane currents and the spin Hall effect, where a pinning regime can be identified at low currents with a transition towards the disorder-free case at higher currents, similar to domain wall motion in diso…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-distinct swirls of magnetic moments which display particle-like behaviour, including the ability to undergo thermally-driven diffusion. In this paper we study the thermally activated motion of arrays of skyrmions using temperature dependent micromagnetic simulations where the skyrmions form spontaneously. In particular, we study the interaction of skyrmions with grain boundaries, which are a typical feature of sputtered ultrathin films used in experimental devices. We find the interactions lead to two distinct regimes. For longer lag times the grains lead t…
We demonstrate room-temperature stabilization of dipolar magnetic skyrmions with diameters in the range of $100$ nm in a single ultrathin layer of the Heusler alloy Co$_2$FeAl (CFA) under moderate magnetic fields. Current-induced skyrmion dynamics in microwires is studied with a scanning Nitrogen-Vacancy magnetometer operating in the photoluminescence quenching mode. We first demonstrate skyrmion nucleation by spin-orbit torque and show that its efficiency can be significantly improved using tilted magnetic fields, an effect which is not specific to Heusler alloys and could be advantageous for…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in a new generation of memories. How to generate and stabilize skyrmions is essential for their successful application to technology. Here we theoretically demonstrate that arrays of skyrmions can be imprinted in ultrathin ferromagnetic films in large numbers by bringing a magnetic nanostructured template close to the film. Two kind of templates, allowed by present-day nanotechnologies, are studied: arrays of ferromagnetic nanorods and superconducting vortices. Skyrmions are generated when exposing magnetic films to the templa…
In quantum matters hosting electron-electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, spatial inhomogeneities, arising from competing ground states, can be essential for determining and understanding topological properties. A prominent example is Hall anomalies observed in SrRuO3 films, which were interpreted in terms of either magnetic skyrmion-induced topological Hall effect (THE) or inhomogeneous anomalous Hall effect (AHE). To clarify this ambiguity, we systematically investigated the AHE of SrRuO3 ultrathin films with controllable inhomogeneities in film thickness (tSRO). By harnessing the st…
We present results of the analysis of Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) measurements of spin waves performed on ultrathin single and multirepeat CoFeB layers with adjacent heavy metal layers. From a detailed study of the spin-wave dispersion relation, we independently extract the Heisenberg exchange interaction (also referred to as symmetric exchange interaction), the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI, also referred to as antisymmetric exchange interaction), and the anisotropy field. We find a large DMI in CoFeB thin films adjacent to a Pt layer and nearly vanishing DMI for CoFeB films adj…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanometric spin textures of outstanding potential for spintronic applications due to unique features governed by their non-trivial topology. It is well known that skyrmions of definite chirality are stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction (DMI) in bulk non-centrosimmetric materials or ultrathin films with strong spin-orbit coupling in the interface. In this work, we report on the detection of magnetic hedgehog-skyrmions at room temperature in confined systems with neither DMI nor perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We show that soft magnetic (permallo…
A magnetic skyrmionium is a nontopological soliton, which has a doughnut-like out-of-plane spin texture in thin films, and can be phenomenologically viewed as a coalition of two topological magnetic skyrmions with opposite topological numbers. Due to its zero topological number ($Q=0$) and doughnut-like structure, the skyrmionium has its distinctive characteristics as compared to the skyrmion with $Q=\pm 1$. Here we systematically study the generation, manipulation and motion of a skyrmionium in ultrathin magnetic nanostructures by applying a magnetic field or a spin-polarized current. It is f…
We report the experimental observation of micron-scale magnetic skyrmions at room temperature in several Pt/Co-based thin film heterostructures designed to possess a low exchange stiffness, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and a modest interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI). We find both experimentally and by micromagnetic and analytic modeling that the combined action of low exchange stiffness and modest iDMI eliminates the energetic penalty associated with forming domain walls in thin film heterostructures. When the domain wall energy density approaches negative values, the r…
In this manuscript we demonstrate the skyrmion formation in ultrathin nanodots using magnetic force microscopy tip. Submicron-size dots based on Pt/Co/Au multilayers hosting interfacial Dzyaloshiskii-Morya interaction were used in the experiments. We have found that the tip field generated by the magnetic tip significantly affects the magnetization state of the nanodots and leads to the formation of skyrmions. Micromagnetic simulations explain the evolution of the magnetic state during magnetic force microscopy scans and confirm the possibility of the skyrmion formation. The key transition in …
We study the stabilization and electrical manipulation of skyrmions in magnetic ultrathin films in the absence of an applied magnetic field. We show that this requires an increased magnetic anisotropy, controlled by the sample thickness, as compared to usual skyrmionic samples, so that the uniform state corresponds to the zero field ground state and the skyrmions to metastable excitations. Although skyrmion stabilization at zero field is demonstrated over a broad range of thicknesses, electrical control appeared to be more demanding to avoid skyrmion deformation. In the thinnest samples, the l…
Noncollinear spin textures in ferromagnetic ultrathin films are currently the subject of renewed interest since the discovery of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). This antisymmetric exchange interaction selects a given chirality for the spin textures and allows stabilising configurations with nontrivial topology. Moreover, it has many crucial consequences on the dynamical properties of these topological structures, including chiral domain walls (DWs) and magnetic skyrmions. In the recent years the study of noncollinear spin textures has been extended from single ultrathi…
Spin waves can probe the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which gives rise to topological spin textures, such as skyrmions. However, the DMI has not yet been reported in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with arguably the lowest damping for spin waves. In this work, we experimentally evidence the interfacial DMI in a 7~nm-thick YIG film by measuring the nonreciprocal spin wave propagation in terms of frequency, amplitude and most importantly group velocities using all electrical spin-wave spectroscopy. The velocities of propagating spin waves show chirality among three vectors, i.e. the film no…
Magnetic skyrmions are swirling magnetic textures with novel characteristics suitable for future spintronic and topological applications. Recent studies confirmed the room-temperature stabilization of skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnets. However, such ferromagnetic skyrmions show undesirable topological effect, the skyrmion Hall effect, which leads to their current-driven motion towards device edges, where skyrmions could easily be annihilated by topographic defects. Recent theoretical studies have predicted enhanced current-driven behaviour for antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled skyrmions…
Neel skyrmions are of high interest due to their potential applications in a variety of spintronic devices, currently accessible in ultrathin heavy metal/ferromagnetic bilayers and multilayers with a strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here we report on the direct imaging of chiral spin structures including skyrmions in an exchange coupled Co/Pd multilayer at room temperature with Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, a high resolution technique previously suggested to exhibit no Neel skyrmion contrast. Phase retrieval methods allow us to map the internal spin structure of the skyrmi…
Spin waves in perpendicularly-magnetized Pt/Co/AlO$_x$/Pt ultrathin films with varying Co thicknesses (0.6-1.2 nm) have been studied with Brillouin light spectroscopy in the Damon-Eshbach geometry. The measurements reveal a pronounced nonreciprocal propagation, which increases with decreasing Co thicknesses. This nonreciprocity is attributed to an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which is significantly stronger than asymmetries resulting from surface anisotropies for such modes. Results are consistent with an interfacial DMI constant $D_s = -1.7 \pm 0.11$ pJ/m, which favors…
Topological spin textures as an emerging class of topological matter offer a medium for information storage and processing. The recently discovered topological Hall effect (THE) is considered as a fingerprint for electrically probing non-trivial spin-textures. But the origin of THE in oxides has remained elusive. Here we report an observation of the THE in ultrathin (unit cells. u.c.) 4d ferromagnetic SrRuO3 films grown on SrTiO3(001) substrates, which can be attributed to the chiral ordering of spin structure (i.e., skyrmion-like) in the single SrRuO3 layer without contacting 5d oxide SrIrO3 …
Electric control of magnetism is a prerequisite for efficient and low power spintronic devices. More specifically, in heavy metal/ ferromagnet/ insulator heterostructures, voltage gating has been shown to locally and dynamically tune magnetic properties like interface anisotropy and saturation magnetization. However, its effect on interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI), which is crucial for the stability of magnetic skyrmions, has been challenging to achieve and has not been reported yet for ultrathin films. Here, we demonstrate 130% variation of DMI with electric field in Ta/FeCo…

We reported a systematic study of spin-orbit torque biased magnetic sensors based on NiFe/Pt bilayers through both macro-spin modeling and experiments. The simulation results show that it is possible to achieve a linear sensor with a dynamic range of 0.1 - 10 Oe, power consumption of 1uW - 1 mW, and sensitivity of 0.1-0.5 Ohm/Oe. These characteristics can be controlled by varying the sensor dimension and current density in the Pt layer. The latter is in the range of 1 x 10^5 - 10^7 A/cm^2. Experimental results of fabricated sensors with selected sizes agree well with the simulation results. Fo…
Chiral magnetic textures in ultrathin perpendicularly magnetised multilayer film stacks with an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction have been the focus of much research recently. The chirality associated with the broken inversion symmetry at the interface between an ultrathin ferromagnetic layer and a heavy metal with large spin-orbit coupling supports homochiral Néel domain walls and hedgehog (Néel) skyrmions. Under spin-orbit torques these Néel type magnetic structures are predicted, and have been measured, to move at high velocities. However recent studies have indicated that some…
To stabilize the non-trivial spin textures, e.g., skyrmions or chiral domain walls in ultrathin magnetic films, an additional degree of freedom such as the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (IDMI) must be induced by the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of a stacked heavy metal layer. However, advanced approaches to simultaneously control IDMI and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are needed for future spin-orbitronic device implementations. Here, we show an effect of atomic-scale surface modulation on the magnetic properties and IDMI in ultrathin films composed of 5d heavy me…
The magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin films down to the nanoscale are ruled by the exchange stiffness, anisotropies and the effects of magnetic fields. As surfaces break inversion symmetry, an additional effective chiral exchange is omnipresent in any magnetic nanostructure. These so-called Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) affect all inhomogeneous magnetic states either subtly or spectacularly. E.g., DMIs cause a chirality selection of the rotation sense and can fix the local rotation axis for the magnetization in domain walls (DW). But, they can stabilize also entirely differe…
Under the correct conditions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) can lead to topologically protected spin textures such as skyrmions. The application of DMI for spin-based computation and memory technologies is promising and requires a detailed consideration of the role intrinsic energies have on stabilizing the diverse textures observed thus far. Here we experimentally investigate the effect of dipolar energy from interlayer coupling on the remanent spin textures found at room temperature for interfacial DMI multilayers of [ Pt \ Co \ Ir ]$_{\times N}$. The total dipolar energy is modif…
The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction (DMI) in ultrathin magnetic thin film heterostructures provides a new approach for controlling spin textures on mesoscopic length scales. Here we investigate the dependence of the interfacial DMI constant D on a Pt wedge insertion layer in Ta_CoFeB_Pt(wedge)_MgO thin films by observing the asymmetric spin wave dispersion using Brillouin light scattering. Continuous tuning of D by more than a factor of three is realized by inserting less than one monolayer of Pt. The observations provide new insights for designing magnetic thin film heterostruct…
We present a systematic study of higher-order exchange interactions beyond the pair-wise Heisenberg exchange in transition-metal trilayers based on density functional theory calculations. We show that these terms can play an important role in magnetic trilayers composed of a single hexagonal Fe or Co atomic layer sandwiched between $4d$ and $5d$ transition-metal layers. We study the dependence of the biquadratic and the three-site and four-site four spin interaction on the band filling of the $4d$ and $5d$ layers as well as the stacking sequence, i.e. fcc vs. hcp stacking. Our calculations rev…
We suggest a consistent microscopic theory of spin injection from a ferromagnet (FM) into a semiconductor (S). It describes tunneling and emission of electrons through modified FM-S Schottky barrier with an ultrathin heavily doped interfacial S layer . We calculate nonlinear spin-selective properties of such a reverse-biased FM-S junction, its nonlinear I-V characteristic, current saturation, and spin accumulation in S. We show that the spin polarization of current, spin density, and penetration length increase with the total current until saturation. We find conditions for most efficient spin…

We study the magnetic interactions in atomic layers of Fe and 5d transition-metals such as Os, Ir, and Pt on the (001) surface of Rh using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. For both stackings of the 5d-Fe bilayer on Rh(001) we observe a transition from an antiferromagnetic to a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange interaction upon 5d band filling. In the sandwich structure 5d/Fe/Rh(001) the nearest neighbor exchange is significantly reduced. For FeIr bilayers on Rh(001) we consider spin spiral states in order to determine exchange constants beyond nearest nei…
