Convex relaxations of the AC Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem are essential not only for identifying the globally optimal solution but also for enabling the use of OPF formulations in Bilevel Programming and Mathematical Programs with Equilibrium Constraints (MPEC), which are required for solving problems such as the coordination between transmission and distribution system operator (TSO/DSO) or optimal network investment. Focusing on active distribution grids and radial networks, this paper introduces a framework that collects and compares, for the first time to our knowledge, the performance of the most promising convex OPF formulations for practical applications. Our goal is to establish a solid basis that will inform the selection of the most appropriate algorithm for different applications. This paper (i) introduces a unified mathematical and simulation framework, (ii) extends existing methods to retain exactness in a wider number of cases and (iii) consider reactive power injections. We conduct simulations on the IEEE 34 and 123 radial test feeders with distributed energy resources (DERs), using yearly solar irradiation and load data.
If $X$ is an $n\times n$ symmetric matrix, then the directional derivative of $X \mapsto \det(X)$ in the direction $I$ is the elementary symmetric polynomial of degree $n-1$ in the eigenvalues of $X$. This is a polynomial in the entries of $X$ with the property that it is hyperbolic with respect to the direction $I$. The corresponding hyperbolicity cone is a relaxation of the positive semidefinite (PSD) cone known as the first derivative relaxation (or Renegar derivative) of the PSD cone. A spectrahedal cone is a convex cone that has a representation as the intersection of a subspace with the …
This paper develops a novel second order cone relaxation of the semidefinite programming formulation of optimal power flow, that does not imply the `angle relaxation'. We build on a technique developed by Kim et al., extend it for complex matrices, and apply it to 3x3 positive semidefinite matrices to generate novel second-order cone constraints that augment upon the well-known 2x2 principal-minor based second-order cone constraints. Finally, we apply it to optimal power flow in meshed networks and provide numerical illustrations.
Among many approaches to increase the computational efficiency of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for quadratic constrained quadratic programming problems (QCQPs), exploiting the aggregate sparsity of the data matrices in the SDP by Fukuda et al. (2001) and second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation have been popular. In this paper, we exploit the aggregate sparsity of SOCP relaxation of QCQPs. Specifically, we prove that exploiting the aggregate sparsity reduces the number of second-order cones in the SOCP relaxation, and that we can simplify the matrix completion procedure by …
We give explicit polynomial-sized (in $n$ and $k$) semidefinite representations of the hyperbolicity cones associated with the elementary symmetric polynomials of degree $k$ in $n$ variables. These convex cones form a family of non-polyhedral outer approximations of the non-negative orthant that preserve low-dimensional faces while successively discarding high-dimensional faces. More generally we construct explicit semidefinite representations (polynomial-sized in $k,m$, and $n$) of the hyperbolicity cones associated with $k$th directional derivatives of polynomials of the form $p(x) = \det(\s…
In this paper, we present new convex relaxations for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problems. While recent research has focused on strengthening convex relaxations using reformulation-linearization technique (RLT), the state-of-the-art methods lose their effectiveness when dealing with (multiple) nonconvex quadratic constraints in QCQP. In this research, we decompose and relax each nonconvex constraint to two second order cone (SOC) constraints and then linearize the products of the SOC constraints and linear constraints to construct some effective new valid c…

The classical alternating current optimal power flow problem is highly nonconvex and generally hard to solve. Convex relaxations, in particular semidefinite, second-order cone, convex quadratic, and linear relaxations, have recently attracted significant interest. The semidefinite relaxation is the strongest among them and is exact for many cases. However, the computational efficiency for solving large-scale semidefinite optimization is lower than for second-order cone optimization. We propose a conic relaxation obtained by combining semidefinite optimization with the reformulation-linearizati…
The problem of minimizing a (nonconvex) quadratic form over the unit simplex, referred to as a standard quadratic program, admits an exact convex conic formulation over the computationally intractable cone of completely positive matrices. Replacing the intractable cone in this formulation by the larger but tractable cone of doubly nonnegative matrices, i.e., the cone of positive semidefinite and componentwise nonnegative matrices, one obtains the so-called doubly nonnegative relaxation, whose optimal value yields a lower bound on that of the original problem. We present a full algebraic charac…
We study the problem of designing attacks to safety-critical systems in which the adversary seeks to maximize the overall system cost within a model predictive control framework. Although in general this problem is NP-hard, we characterize a family of problems that can be solved in polynomial time via a second-order cone programming relaxation. In particular, we show that positive systems fall under this family. We provide examples demonstrating the design of optimal attacks on an autonomous vehicle and a microgrid.
This paper studies robust solutions and semidefinite linear programming (SDP) relaxations of a class of convex polynomial programs in the face of data uncertainty. The class of convex programs, called robust SOS-convex programs, includes robust quadratically constrained convex programs and robust separable convex polynomial programs. It establishes sums of squares polynomial representations characterizing robust solutions and exact SDP-relaxations of robust SOS-convex programs under various commonly used uncertainty sets. In particular, the results show that the polytopic and ellipsoidal uncer…
We maximize the production of biogas in a gradostat at steady state. The physical decision variables are the water, substrate, and biomass entering each tank and the flows through the interconnecting pipes. Our main technical focus is the nonconvex constraint describing microbial growth. We formulate a relaxation and prove that it is exact when the gradostat is outflow connected, its system matrix is irreducible, and the growth rate satisfies a simple condition. The relaxation has second-order cone representations for the Monod and Contois growth rates. We extend the steady state models to the…

Renewable energy resources and power electronics-interfaced loads introduce fast dynamics in distribution networks. These dynamics cannot be regulated by slow conventional solutions and require fast controllable energy resources such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs). To compensate for the high costs associated to BESSs, their energy and power management should be optimized. In this paper, a convex iterative optimization approach is developed to find the optimal active and reactive power setpoints of BESSs in active distribution networks. The objective is to minimize the total cost of …
Determination of the most economic strategies for supply and transmission of electricity is a daunting computational challenge. Due to theoretical barriers, so-called NP-hardness, the amount of effort to optimize the schedule of generating units and route of power, can grow exponentially with the number of decision variables. Practical approaches to this problem involve legacy approximations and ad-hoc heuristics that may undermine the efficiency and reliability of power system operations, that are ever growing in scale and complexity. Therefore, the development of powerful optimization method…
In this paper, we propose a new convergent conic programming hierarchy of relaxations involving both semi-definite cone and second-order cone constraints for solving nonconvex polynomial optimization problems to global optimality. The significance of this hierarchy is that the size and number of the semi-definite and second-order cone constraints of the relaxations are fixed and independent of the step or level of the approximation in the hierarchy. Using the Krivine-Stengle's certificate of positivity in real algebraic geometry, we establish the convergence of the hierarchy of relaxations, ex…
The dynamic response of power grids to small events or persistent stochastic disturbances influences their stable operation. Low-frequency inter-area oscillations are of particular concern due to insufficient damping. This paper studies the effect of the operating point on the linear time-invariant dynamics of power networks. A pertinent metric based on the frequency response of grid dynamics is proposed to quantify power system's stability against inter-area oscillations. We further put forth an optimal power flow formulation to yield a grid dispatch that optimizes this novel stability metric…
This paper investigates the water network's potential ability to provide demand response services to the power grid under the framework of a distribution-level water-energy nexus (micro-WEN). In particular, the hidden controllability of water loads, such as irrigation systems, was closely studied to improve the flexibility of electrical grids. A optimization model is developed for the demand-side management (DSM) of micro-WEN, and the simulation results assert that grid flexibility indeed benefits from controllable water loads. Although the proposed optimal DSM model is an intractable mixed-in…
We present a generalization of the notion of neighborliness to non-polyhedral convex cones. Although a definition of neighborliness is available in the non-polyhedral case in the literature, it is fairly restrictive as it requires all the low-dimensional faces to be polyhedral. Our approach is more flexible and includes, for example, the cone of positive-semidefinite matrices as a special case (this cone is not neighborly in general). We term our generalization Terracini convexity due to its conceptual similarity with the conclusion of Terracini's lemma from algebraic geometry. Polyhedral cone…
The software package BBCPOP is a MATLAB implementation of a hierarchy of sparse doubly nonnegative (DNN) relaxations of a class of polynomial optimization (minimization) problems (POPs) with binary, box and complementarity (BBC) constraints. Given a POP in the class and a relaxation order, BBCPOP constructs a simple conic optimization problem (COP), which serves as a DNN relaxation of the POP, and then solves the COP by applying the bisection and projection (BP) method. The COP is expressed with a linear objective function and constraints described as a single hyperplane and two cones, which a…
The second-order cone relaxation of the branch flow model (BFM) and bus injection model (BIM) variants of optimal power flow are well-known to be equivalent for radial networks. In this work we show that in meshed networks with parallel lines, BIM dominates BFM, and propose novel constraints to make them equivalent in general. Furthermore, we develop an improvement to the second-order cone relaxations of optimal power flow, adding novel and valid linear constraints on the lifted current expressions. We develop two simple test cases to highlight the advantages of the proposed constraints. These…
Completely positive (CP) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of CP matrices, allow to reformulate or approximate a general polynomial optimization problem (POP) with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CP tensors. Similarly, completely positive semidefinite (CPSD) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of positive semidefinite (PSD) matrices, can be used to approximate general POPs with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CPSD tensors. In this paper, we study CP and CPSD tensor relaxations for general POPs and compare them with the bounds obtained via a Lag…
Hyperbolic polynomials are real polynomials whose real hypersurfaces are nested ovaloids, the inner most of which is convex. These polynomials appear in many areas of mathematics, including optimization, combinatorics and differential equations. Here we investigate the special connection between a hyperbolic polynomial and the set of polynomials that interlace it. This set of interlacers is a convex cone, which we write as a linear slice of the cone of nonnegative polynomials. In particular, this allows us to realize any hyperbolicity cone as a slice of the cone of nonnegative polynomials. Usi…
Using the dual cone of sums of nonnegative circuits (SONC), we provide a relaxation of the global optimization problem to minimize an exponential sum and, as a special case, a multivariate real polynomial. Our approach builds on two key observations. First, that the dual SONC cone is contained in the primal one. Hence, containment in this cone is a certificate of nonnegativity. Second, we show that membership in the dual cone can be verified by a linear program. We implement the algorithm and present initial experimental results comparing our method to existing approaches.
This paper proposes a set of closed-form conditions to ensure the strong duality of second-order cone program (SOCP) formulation for AC power flow in radial power networks. In addition, numerical evaluations on IEEE 33-bus test networks and a real-world distribution network are performed to demonstrate the validity of the proposed conditions.
A successful computational approach for solving large-scale positive semidefinite (PSD) programs is to enforce PSD-ness on only a collection of submatrices. For our study, we let $\mathcal{S}^{n,k}$ be the convex cone of $n\times n$ symmetric matrices where all $k\times k$ principal submatrices are PSD. We call a matrix in this $k$-\emph{locally PSD}. In order to compare $S^{n,k}$ to the of PSD matrices, we study eigenvalues of $k$-{locally PSD} matrices. The key insight in this paper is that there is a convex cone $H(e_k^n)$ so that if $X \in \mathcal{S}^{n,k}$, then the vector of eigenvalues…
We consider integer programming and the semi-group membership problem. We provide the following theorem of the alternative: the system Ax=b has no nonnegative integral solution x if and only if p(b) <0 for some given polynomial p whose vector of coefficients lies in a convex cone that we characterize. We also provide a hierarchy of linear programming relaxations, where the continuous case Ax=b with x real and nonnegative, describes the first relaxation in the hierarchy.
Computational speed and global optimality are key needs for practical algorithms for the optimal power flow problem. Two convex relaxations offer a favorable trade-off between the standard second-order cone and the standard semidefinite relaxations for large-scale meshed networks in terms of optimality gap and computation time: the tight-and-cheap relaxation (TCR) and the quadratic convex relaxation (QCR). We compare these relaxations on 60 PGLib-OPF test cases with up to 1,354 buses under three operating conditions and show that TCR dominates QCR on all 20 typical (TYP) test cases, on 18 out …
The pooling problem is an important industrial problem in the class of network flow problems for allocating gas flow in pipeline transportation networks. For P-formulation of the pooling problem with time discretization, we propose second order cone programming (SOCP) and linear programming (LP) relaxations and prove that they obtain the same optimal value as the semidefinite programming relaxation. The equivalence among the optimal values of the three relaxations is also computationally shown. Moreover, a rescheduling method is proposed to efficiently refine the solution obtained by the SOCP …
The problem of finding a vector with the fewest nonzero elements that satisfies an underdetermined system of linear equations is an NP-complete problem that is typically solved numerically via convex heuristics or nicely-behaved non convex relaxations. In this paper we consider the elementary method of alternating projections (MAP) for solving the sparsity optimization problem without employing convex heuristics. In a parallel paper we recently introduced the restricted normal cone which generalizes the classical Mordukhovich normal cone and reconciles some fundamental gaps in the theory of su…

Conic optimization has recently emerged as a powerful tool for designing tractable and guaranteed algorithms for non-convex polynomial optimization problems. On the one hand, tractability is crucial for efficiently solving large-scale problems and, on the other hand, strong bounds are needed to ensure high quality solutions. In this research, we investigate the strengthening of RLT relaxations of polynomial optimization problems through the addition of nine different types of constraints that are based on linear, second-order cone, and semidefinite programming to solve to optimality the instan…
The day-ahead energy and reserve management with transmission restrictions and voltage security limits is a challenging task for large-scale power systems in the presence of real-time variations caused by the uncertain demand and the fluctuating power output of renewable energy sources (RESs). The proposed formulation in this work supports joint scheduling of energy and reserve to promote an economic and reliable operation. To improve its scalability, a two-stage iterative optimization algorithm is proposed based on Bender's decomposition framework. Therewith, the optimal schedule is computed …
High-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems are increasingly incorporated into today's AC power grids, necessitating optimal power flow (OPF) tools for the analysis, planning, and operation of such hybrid systems. To this end, we introduce hynet, a Python-based open-source OPF framework for hybrid AC/DC grids with point-to-point and radial multi-terminal HVDC systems. hynet's design promotes ease of use and extensibility, which is supported by the particular mathematical model and software design presented in this paper. The system model features a unified representation of AC and DC subgrids a…
The optimal power flow (OPF) problem determines power generation/demand that minimize a certain objective such as generation cost or power loss. It is nonconvex. We prove that, for radial networks, after shrinking its feasible set slightly, the global optimum of OPF can be recovered via a second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation under a condition that can be checked a priori. The condition holds for the IEEE 13-, 34-, 37-, 123-bus networks and two real-world networks, and has a physical interpretation.
A recent series of papers has examined the extension of disjunctive-programming techniques to mixed-integer second-order-cone programming. For example, it has been shown---by several authors using different techniques---that the convex hull of the intersection of an ellipsoid, $E$, and a split disjunction, $(l - x_j)(x_j - u) \le 0$ with $l < u$, equals the intersection of $E$ with an additional second-order-cone representable (SOCr) set. In this paper, we study more general intersections of the form $K \cap Q$ and $K \cap Q \cap H$, where $K$ is a SOCr cone, $Q$ is a nonconvex cone defined by…
