A successful computational approach for solving large-scale positive semidefinite (PSD) programs is to enforce PSD-ness on only a collection of submatrices. For our study, we let $\mathcal{S}^{n,k}$ be the convex cone of $n\times n$ symmetric matrices where all $k\times k$ principal submatrices are PSD. We call a matrix in this $k$-\emph{locally PSD}. In order to compare $S^{n,k}$ to the of PSD matrices, we study eigenvalues of $k$-{locally PSD} matrices. The key insight in this paper is that there is a convex cone $H(e_k^n)$ so that if $X \in \mathcal{S}^{n,k}$, then the vector of eigenvalues of $X$ is contained in $H(e_k^n)$. The cone $H(e_k^n)$ is the hyperbolicity cone of the elementary symmetric polynomial $e^k_n$ (where $e_k^n(x) = \sum_{S \subseteq [n] : |S| = k} \prod_{i \in S} x_i$) with respect to the all ones vector. Using this insight, we are able to improve previously known upper bounds on the Frobenius distance between matrices in $\mathcal{S}^{n,k}$ and PSD matrices. We also study the quality of the convex relaxation $H(e^n_k)$. We first show that this relaxation is tight for the case of $k = n -1$, that is, for every vector in $H(e^n_{n -1})$ there exists a matrix in $\mathcal{S}^{n, n -1}$ whose eigenvalues are equal to the components of the vector. We then prove a structure theorem on nonsingular matrices in $\mathcal{S}^{n,k}$ all of whose $k\times k$ principal minors are zero, which we believe is of independent interest. %We then prove a structure theorem that precisely characterizes the non-singular matrices in $\mathcal{S}^{n,k}$ whose vector of eigenvalues belongs to the boundary of $H(e^n_k)$. This result shows shows that for $1< k < n -1$ "large parts" of the boundary of $H(e_k^n)$ do not intersect with the eigenvalues of matrices in $\mathcal{S}^{n,k}$.
We propose a new method for generating semidefinite relaxations of optimal power flow problems. The method is based on chordal conversion techniques: by dropping some equality constraints in the conversion, we obtain semidefinite relaxations that are computationally cheaper, but potentially weaker, than the standard semidefinite relaxation. Our numerical results show that the new relaxations often produce the same results as the standard semidefinite relaxation, but at a lower computational cost.
We develop a natural variant of Dikin's affine-scaling method, first for semidefinite programming and then for hyperbolic programming in general. We match the best complexity bounds known for interior-point methods. All previous polynomial-time affine-scaling algorithms have been for conic optimization problems in which the underlying cone is symmetric. Hyperbolicity cones, however, need not be symmetric. Our algorithm is the first polynomial-time affine-scaling method not relying on symmetry.
Binary Integer Programming (BIP) problems are of interest due in part to the difficulty they pose and because of their various applications, including those in graph theory, combinatorial optimization and network optimization. In this note, we explicitly state the Lovasz-Schrijver Semidefinite Programming (SDP) relaxation (in primal-standard form) for a BIP problem, a relaxation that yields a tighter upper-bound than the canonical Linear Programming relaxation.
This paper studies how to solve semi-infinite polynomial programming (SIPP) problems by semidefinite relaxation method. We first introduce two SDP relaxation methods for solving polynomial optimization problems with finitely many constraints. Then we propose an exchange algorithm with SDP relaxations to solve SIPP problems with compact index set. At last, we extend the proposed method to SIPP problems with noncompact index set via homogenization. Numerical results show that the algorithm is efficient in practice.
Semidefinite relaxation techniques have shown great promise for nonconvex optimal power flow problems. However, a number of independent numerical experiments have led to concerns about scalability and robustness of existing SDP solvers. To address these concerns, we investigate some numerical aspects of the problem and compare different state-of-the-art solvers. Our results demonstrate that semidefinite relaxations of large problem instances with on the order of 10,000 buses can be solved reliably and to reasonable accuracy within minutes. Furthermore, the semidefinite relaxation of a test cas…
This paper focuses on the study of a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints, where the objective and the constraint functions are all polynomials. We present a method for finding its global minimizers and global minimum using a hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations and prove the convergence result for the method. Numerical experiments are presented to show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
In this paper, by improving the variable-splitting approach, we propose a new semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for the nonconvex quadratic optimization problem over the $\ell_1$ unit ball (QPL1). It dominates the state-of-the-art SDP-based bound for (QPL1). As extensions, we apply the new approach to the relaxation problem of the sparse principal component analysis and the nonconvex quadratic optimization problem over the $\ell_p$ ($1< p<2$) unit ball and then show the dominance of the new relaxation.
In this paper we propose and apply the enhanced semidefinite relaxation technique for solving a class of non-convex quadratic optimization problems. The approach is based on enhancing the semidefinite relaxation methodology by complementing linear equality constraints by quadratic-linear constrains. We give sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the optimal values of the primal and enhanced semidefinite relaxed problems coincide. We apply this approach to the problem of resolving the optimal anisotropy function. The idea is to construct an optimal anisotropy function as a minimizer for the an…
The geometric measure of entanglement is a widely used entanglement measure for quantum pure states. The key problem of computation of the geometric measure is to calculate the entanglement eigenvalue, which is equivalent to computing the largest unitary eigenvalue of a corresponding complex tensor. In this paper, we propose a Jacobian semidefinite programming relaxation method to calculate the largest unitary eigenvalue of a complex tensor. For this, we first introduce the Jacobian semidefinite programming relaxation method for a polynomial optimization with equality constraint, and then conv…
The classical alternating current optimal power flow problem is highly nonconvex and generally hard to solve. Convex relaxations, in particular semidefinite, second-order cone, convex quadratic, and linear relaxations, have recently attracted significant interest. The semidefinite relaxation is the strongest among them and is exact for many cases. However, the computational efficiency for solving large-scale semidefinite optimization is lower than for second-order cone optimization. We propose a conic relaxation obtained by combining semidefinite optimization with the reformulation-linearizati…
This paper proves that in an unbalanced multi-phase network with a tree topology, the semidefinite programming relaxation of optimal power flow problems is exact when critical buses are not adjacent to each other. Here a critical bus either contributes directly to the cost function or is where an injection constraint is tight at optimality. Our result generalizes a sufficient condition for exact relaxation in single-phase tree networks to tree networks with arbitrary number of phases.
This paper studies a class of so-called linear semi-infinite polynomial programming (LSIPP) problems. It is a subclass of linear semi-infinite programming problems whose constraint functions are polynomials in parameters and index sets are basic semialgebraic sets. We present a hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations for LSIPP problems. Convergence rate analysis of the SDP relaxations is established based on some existing results. We show how to verify the compactness of feasible sets of LSIPP problems. In the end, we extend the SDP relaxation method to more general semi-infini…
This paper studies an optimization problem on the sum of traces of matrix quadratic forms on $m$ orthogonal matrices, which can be considered as a generalization of the synchronization of rotations. While the problem is nonconvex, the paper shows that its semidefinite programming relaxation can solve the original nonconvex problems exactly, under an additive noise model with small noise in the order of $O(-m^{1/4})$, where $m$ is the number of orthogonal matrices. This result can be considered as a generalization of existing results on phase synchronization.
A bilevel program is an optimization problem whose constraints involve another optimization problem. This paper studies bilevel polynomial programs (BPPs), i.e., all the functions are polynomials. We reformulate BPPs equivalently as semi-infinite polynomial programs (SIPPs), using Fritz John conditions and Jacobian representations. Combining the exchange technique and Lasserre type semidefinite relaxations, we propose numerical methods for solving both simple and general BPPs. For simple BPPs, we prove the convergence to global optimal solutions. Numerical experiments are presented to show the…
It has recently been shown (Burer, Math. Program Ser. A 120:479-495, 2009) that a large class of NP-hard nonconvex quadratic programming problems can be modeled as so called completely positive programming problems, which are convex but still NP-hard in general. A basic tractable relaxation is gotten by doubly nonnegative relaxation, resulting in a doubly nonnegative programming. In this paper, we prove that doubly nonnegative relaxation for binary quadratic programming (BQP) problem is equivalent to a tighter semidifinite relaxation for it. When problem (BQP) reduces to max-cut (MC) problem, …
In this paper, we consider a bilevel polynomial optimization problem where the objective and the constraint functions of both the upper and the lower level problems are polynomials. We present methods for finding its global minimizers and global minimum using a sequence of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations and provide convergence results for the methods. Our scheme for problems with a convex lower-level problem involves solving a transformed equivalent single-level problem by a sequence of SDP relaxations; whereas our approach for general problems involving a non-convex polynomial low…
The Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem can be reformulated as a nonconvex Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Program (QCQP). There is a growing body of work on the use of semidefinite programming relaxations to solve OPF. The relaxation is exact if and only if the corresponding optimal solution set contains a rank-one matrix. In this paper, we establish sufficient conditions guaranteeing the nonexistence of a rank-one matrix in said optimal solution set. In particular, we show that under mild assumptions on problem nondegeneracy, any optimal solution to the semidefinite relaxation will have ran…
We consider the general polynomial optimization problem $P: f^*=\min \{f(x)\,:\,x\in K\}$ where $K$ is a compact basic semi-algebraic set. We first show that the standard Lagrangian relaxation yields a lower bound as close as desired to the global optimum $f^*$, provided that it is applied to a problem $\tilde{P}$ equivalent to $P$, in which sufficiently many redundant constraints (products of the initial ones) are added to the initial description of $P$. Next we show that the standard hierarchy of LP-relaxations of $P$ (in the spirit of Sherali-Adams' RLT) can be interpreted as a brute force …
We propose a novel method of resolving the optimal anisotropy function. The idea is to construct the optimal anisotropy function as a solution to the inverse Wulff problem, i.e. as a minimizer for the anisoperimetric ratio for a given Jordan curve in the plane. It leads to a nonconvex quadratic optimization problem with linear matrix inequalities. In order to solve it we propose the so-called enhanced semidefinite relaxation method which is based on a solution to a convex semidefinite problem obtained by a semidefinite relaxation of the original problem augmented by quadratic-linear constraint…
This paper aims to find efficient solutions to a multi-objective optimization problem (MP) with convex polynomial data. To this end, a hybrid method, which allows us to transform problem (MP) into a scalar convex polynomial optimization problem (P$_z$) and does not destroy the properties of convexity, is considered. First, we show an existence result for efficient solutions to problem (MP) under some mild assumption. Then, for problem (P$_z$), we establish two kinds of representations of non-negativity of convex polynomials over convex semi-algebraic sets, and propose two kinds of finite conve…
For an ideal I with a positive dimensional real variety, based on moment relaxations, we study how to compute a Pommaret basis which is simultaneously a Groebner basis of an ideal J generated by the kernel of a truncated moment matrix and nesting between I and its real radical ideal. We provide a certificate consisting of a condition on coranks of moment matrices for terminating the algorithm. For a generic delta-regular coordinate system, we prove that the condition is satisfiable in a large enough order of moment relaxations.
The alternating-current optimal power flow (ACOPF) is one of the best known non-convex non-linear optimisation problems. We present a novel re-formulation of ACOPF, which is based on lifting the rectangular power-voltage rank-constrained formulation, and makes it possible to derive alternative SDP relaxations. For those, we develop a first-order method based on the parallel coordinate descent with a novel closed-form step based on roots of cubic polynomials.
Hydro-thermal coordination is the problem of determining the optimal economic dispatch of hydro and thermal power plants over time. The physics of hydroelectricity generation is commonly simplified in the literature to account for its fundamentally nonlinear nature. Advances in convex relaxation theory have allowed the advent of Shor's semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations of quadratic models of the problem. This paper shows how a recently published SDP relaxation is only exact if a very strict condition regarding turbine efficiency is observed, failing otherwise. It further proposes the …
Hydro unit commitment is the problem of maximizing water use efficiency while minimizing start-up costs in the daily operation of multiple hydro plants, subject to constraints on short-term reservoir operation, and long-term goals. A low-rank rounding heuristic is presented for the semidefinite relaxation of the mixed-integer quadratic-constrained formulation of this problem. In addition to limits on reservoir and generator operation, transmission constraints are represented by an approximate AC power flow model. In our proposed method, the mathematical program is equivalently formulated as a …
Boolean quadratic optimization problems occur in a number of applications. Their mixed integer-continuous nature is challenging, since it is inherently NP-hard. For this motivation, semidefinite programming relaxations (SDR's) are proposed in the literature to approximate the solution, which recasts the problem into convex optimization. Nevertheless, SDR's do not guarantee the extraction of the correct binary minimizer. In this paper, we present a novel approach to enhance the binary solution recovery. The key of the proposed method is the exploitation of known information on the eigenvalues o…
Given all (finite) moments of two measures $μ$ and $λ$ on $\R^n$, we provide a numerical scheme to obtain the Lebesgue decomposition $μ=ν+ψ$ with $ν\llλ$ and $ψ\perpλ$. When$ν$ has a density in $L\_\infty(λ)$ then we obtain two sequences of finite moments vectorsof increasing size (the number of moments) which converge to the moments of $ν$ and $ψ$ respectively, as the number of moments increases. Importantly, {\it no} à priori knowledge on the supports of $μ, ν$ and $ψ$ is required.
Completely positive (CP) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of CP matrices, allow to reformulate or approximate a general polynomial optimization problem (POP) with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CP tensors. Similarly, completely positive semidefinite (CPSD) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of positive semidefinite (PSD) matrices, can be used to approximate general POPs with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CPSD tensors. In this paper, we study CP and CPSD tensor relaxations for general POPs and compare them with the bounds obtained via a Lag…
This paper studies an optimization problem on the sum of traces of matrix quadratic forms in $m$ semi-orthogonal matrices, which can be considered as a generalization of the synchronization of rotations. While the problem is nonconvex, the paper shows that its semidefinite programming relaxation solves the original nonconvex problems exactly with high probability, under an additive noise model with small noise in the order of $O(m^{1/4})$. In addition, it shows that the solution of a nonconvex algorithm considered in Won, Zhou, and Lange [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 2 (2021), pp. 859-882] is a…
Recent results in the study of the Hamilton Jacobi Bellman (HJB) equation have led to the discovery of a formulation of the value function as a linear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) for stochastic nonlinear systems with a mild constraint on their disturbances. This has yielded promising directions for research in the planning and control of nonlinear systems. This work proposes a new method obtaining approximate solutions to these linear stochastic optimal control (SOC) problems. A candidate polynomial with variable coefficients is proposed as the solution to the SOC problem. A Sum of Squ…
Optimal power flow (OPF) is an important problem in the operation of electric power systems. Due to the OPF problem's non-convexity, there may exist multiple local optima. Certifiably obtaining the global solution is important for certain applications of OPF problems. Many global optimization techniques compute an optimality gap that compares the achievable objective value corresponding to the feasible point from a local solution algorithm with the objective value bound from a convex relaxation technique. Rather than the traditional practice of completely separating the local solution and conv…
In this paper we present a formulation of the unit commitment problem with AC power flow constraints. It is solved by a Benders decomposition in which the unit commitment master problem is formulated as a mixed-integer problem with linearization of the power generation constraints for improved convergence. Semidefinite programming relaxation of the rectangular AC optimal power flow is used in the subproblem, providing somewhat conservative cuts. Numerical case studies, including a 6-bus and the IEEE 118-bus network, are provided to test the effectiveness of our proposal. We show in our numeric…
A linear map between real symmetric matrix spaces is positive if all positive semidefinite matrices are mapped to positive semidefinite ones. A real symmetric matrix is separable if it can be written as a summation of Kronecker products of positive semidefinite matrices. This paper studies how to check if a linear map is positive or not and how to check if a matrix is separable or not. We propose numerical algorithms, based on Lasserre type semidefinite relaxations, for solving such questions. To check the positivity of a linear map, we construct a hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations for min…
We present a coordinate ascent method for a class of semidefinite programming problems that arise in non-convex quadratic integer optimization. These semidefinite programs are characterized by a small total number of active constraints and by low-rank constraint matrices. We exploit this special structure by solving the dual problem, using a barrier method in combination with a coordinate-wise exact line search. The main ingredient of our algorithm is the computationally cheap update at each iteration and an easy computation of the exact step size. Compared to interior point methods, our appro…
We study a class of quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs), called {\em diagonal QCQPs\/}, which contain no off-diagonal terms $x_j x_k$ for $j \ne k$, and we provide a sufficient condition on the problem data guaranteeing that the basic Shor semidefinite relaxation is exact. Our condition complements and refines those already present in the literature and can be checked in polynomial time. We then extend our analysis from diagonal QCQPs to general QCQPs, i.e., ones with no particular structure. By reformulating a general QCQP into diagonal form, we establish new, polynomial-time…
We give explicit polynomial-sized (in $n$ and $k$) semidefinite representations of the hyperbolicity cones associated with the elementary symmetric polynomials of degree $k$ in $n$ variables. These convex cones form a family of non-polyhedral outer approximations of the non-negative orthant that preserve low-dimensional faces while successively discarding high-dimensional faces. More generally we construct explicit semidefinite representations (polynomial-sized in $k,m$, and $n$) of the hyperbolicity cones associated with $k$th directional derivatives of polynomials of the form $p(x) = \det(\s…
This paper develops new semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation techniques for two classes of mixed binary quadratically constrained quadratic programs (MBQCQP) and analyzes their approximation performance. The first class of problem finds two minimum norm vectors in $N$-dimensional real or complex Euclidean space, such that $M$ out of $2M$ concave quadratic functions are satisfied. By employing a special randomized rounding procedure, we show that the ratio between the norm of the optimal solution of this model and its SDP relaxation is upper bounded by $\frac{54M^2}π$ in the real case and …
If $X$ is an $n\times n$ symmetric matrix, then the directional derivative of $X \mapsto \det(X)$ in the direction $I$ is the elementary symmetric polynomial of degree $n-1$ in the eigenvalues of $X$. This is a polynomial in the entries of $X$ with the property that it is hyperbolic with respect to the direction $I$. The corresponding hyperbolicity cone is a relaxation of the positive semidefinite (PSD) cone known as the first derivative relaxation (or Renegar derivative) of the PSD cone. A spectrahedal cone is a convex cone that has a representation as the intersection of a subspace with the …
The economic dispatch problem is considered for unbalanced three-phase power distribution networks entailing both non-deferrable and elastic loads, and distributed generation (DG) units. The objective is to minimize the costs of power drawn from the main grid and supplied by the DG units over a given time horizon, while meeting the overall load demand and effecting voltage regulation. Similar to optimal power flow counterparts for balanced systems, the resultant optimization problem is nonconvex. Nevertheless, a semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation technique is advocated to obtain a (rela…
We propose a necessary and sufficient test to determine whether a solution for a general quadratic program with two quadratic constraints (QC2QP) can be computed from that of a specific convex semidefinite relaxation, in which case we say that there is no optimality gap. Originally intended to solve a nonconvex optimal control problem, we consider the case in which the cost and both constraints of the QC2QP may be nonconvex. We obtained our test, which also ascertains when strong duality holds, by generalizing a closely-related method by Ai and Zhang. An extension was necessary because, while …
We describe a factor-revealing convex optimization problem for the integrality gap of the maximum-cut semidefinite programming relaxation: for each $n \geq 2$ we present a convex optimization problem whose optimal value is the largest possible ratio between the value of an optimal rank-$n$ solution to the relaxation and the value of an optimal cut. This problem is then used to compute lower bounds for the integrality gap.
This paper proposes tight semidefinite relaxations for polynomial optimization. The optimality conditions are investigated. We show that generally Lagrange multipliers can be expressed as polynomial functions in decision variables over the set of critical points. The polynomial expressions can be determined by linear equations. Based on these expressions, new Lasserre type semidefinite relaxations are constructed for solving polynomial optimization. We show that the hierarchy of new relaxations has finite convergence, or equivalently, the new relaxations are tight for a finite relaxation order…
The matching problem between two adjacency matrices can be formulated as the NP-hard quadratic assignment problem (QAP). Previous work on semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations to the QAP have produced solutions that are often tight in practice, but such SDPs typically scale badly, involving matrix variables of dimension $n^2$ where n is the number of nodes. To achieve a speed up, we propose a further relaxation of the SDP involving a number of positive semidefinite matrices of dimension $\mathcal{O}(n)$ no greater than the number of edges in one of the graphs. The relaxation can be furthe…
Maximum likelihood estimation problems are, in general, intractable optimization problems. As a result, it is common to approximate the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) using convex relaxations. In some cases, the relaxation is tight: it recovers the true MLE. Most tightness proofs only apply to situations where the MLE exactly recovers a planted solution (known to the analyst). It is then sufficient to establish that the optimality conditions hold at the planted signal. In this paper, we study an estimation problem (angular synchronization) for which the MLE is not a simple function of the …
We show that (i) any constrained polynomial optimization problem (POP) has an equivalent formulation on a variety contained in an Euclidean sphere and (ii) the resulting semidefinite relaxations in the moment-SOS hierarchy have the constant trace property (CTP) for the involved matrices. We then exploit the CTP to avoid solving the semidefinite relaxations via interior-point methods and rather use ad-hoc spectral methods that minimize the largest eigenvalue of a matrix pencil. Convergence to the optimal value of the semidefinite relaxation is guaranteed. As a result we obtain a hierarchy of no…
We consider a new semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation of the symmetric traveling salesman problem (TSP) that may be obtained via an SDP relaxation of the more general quadratic assignment problem (QAP). We show that the new relaxation dominates the one in [D. Cvetkovic, M. Cangalovic, and V. Kovacevic-Vujcic, Semidefinite programming methods for the symmetric traveling salesman problem, in Proc. 7th Int. IPCO Conference, Springer, London, 1999, pp. 126--136]. Unlike the bound of Cvetkovic et al., the new SDP bound is not dominated by the Held-Karp linear programming bound, or vice versa.
A real symmetric matrix (resp., tensor) is said to be copositive if the associated quadratic (resp., homogeneous) form is greater than or equal to zero over the nonnegative orthant. The problem of detecting their copositivity is NP-hard. This paper proposes a complete semidefinite relaxation algorithm for detecting the copositivity of a matrix or tensor. If it is copositive, the algorithm can get a certificate for the copositivity. If it is not, the algorithm can get a point that refutes the copositivity. We show that the detection can be done by solving a finite number of semidefinite relaxat…
