We say a graph $G$ has a Hamiltonian path if it has a path containing all vertices of $G$. For a graph $G$, let $σ_2(G)$ denote the minimum degree sum of two nonadjacent vertices of $G$; restrictions on $σ_2(G)$ are known as Ore-type conditions. Given an integer $t\geq 5$, we prove that if a connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $σ_2(G)>{t-3\over t-2}n$, then $G$ has either a Hamiltonian path or an induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_{1, t}$. Moreover, we characterize all $n$-vertex graphs $G$ where $σ_2(G)={t-3\over t-2}n$ and $G$ has neither a Hamiltonian path nor an induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_{1, t}$. This is an analogue of a recent result by Momège, who investigated the case when $t=4$.
Bedrossian characterized all pairs of forbidden subgraphs for a 2-connected graph to be Hamiltonian. Instead of forbidding some induced subgraphs, we relax the conditions for graphs to be Hamiltonian by restricting Ore- and Fan-type degree conditions on these induced subgraphs. Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and $H$ be an induced subgraph of $G$. $H$ is called \emph{o}-heavy if there are two nonadjacent vertices in $H$ with degree sum at least $n$, and is called $f$-heavy if for every two vertices $u,v\in V(H)$, $d_{H}(u,v)=2$ implies that $\max\{d(u),d(v)\}\geq n/2$. We say that $G$ is $H…
A graph $G$ is $k$-{\em critical} if it has chromatic number $k$, but every proper subgraph of $G$ is $(k-1)$--colorable. Let $f_k(n)$ denote the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical graph. In a very recent paper, we gave a lower bound, $f_k(n) \geq F(k,n)$, that is sharp for every $n=1\,({\rm mod}\, k-1)$. It is also sharp for $k=4$ and every $n\geq 6$. In this note, we present a simple proof of the bound for $k=4$. It implies the case $k=4$ of the conjecture by Ore from 1967 that for every $k\geq 4$ and $n\geq k+2$, $f_k(n+k-1)=f(n)+\frac{k-1}{2}(k - \frac{2}{k-1})$. We also…

It is also sharp for $k=4$ and every $n\geq 6$. The result improves the classical bounds by Gallai and Dirac and subsequent bounds by Krivelevich and Kostochka and Stiebitz. It establishes the asymptotics of $f_k(n)$ for every fixed $k$. It also proves that the conjecture by Ore from 1967 that for every $k…
A graph $G$ is called \emph{claw-o-heavy} if every induced claw ($K_{1,3}$) of $G$ has two end-vertices with degree sum at least $|V(G)|$ in $G$. For a given graph $R$, $G$ is called \emph{$R$-f-heavy} if for every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ isomorphic to $R$ and every pair of vertices $u,v\in V(H)$ with $d_H(u,v)=2$, there holds $\max\{d(u),d(v)\}\geq |V(G)|/2$. In this paper, we prove that every 2-connected claw-\emph{o}-heavy and $Z_3$-\emph{f}-heavy graph is hamiltonian (with two exceptional graphs), where $Z_3$ is the graph obtained from identifying one end-vertex of $P_4$ (a path with 4…
We take an application of the Kernel Lemma by Kostochka and Yancey to its logical conclusion. The consequence is a sort of magical way to draw conclusions about list coloring (and online list coloring) just from the existence of an independent set incident to many edges. We use this to prove an Ore-degree version of Brooks' Theorem for online list-coloring. The Ore-degree of an edge $xy$ in a graph $G$ is $θ(xy) = d_G(x) + d_G(y)$. The Ore-degree of $G$ is $θ(G) = \max_{xy\in E(G)}θ(xy)$. We show that every graph with $θ\ge18$ and $ω\le\fracθ{2}$ is online $\left\lfloor \fracθ{2}\right\rfloor …
Broersma and Veldman proved that every 2-connected claw-free and $P_6$-free graph is hamiltonian. Chen et al. extended this result by proving every 2-connected claw-heavy and $P_6$-free graph is hamiltonian. On the other hand, Li et al. constructed a class of 2-connected graphs which are claw-heavy and $P_6$-\emph{o}-heavy but not hamiltonian. In this paper we further give some Ore-type degree conditions restricting to induced $P_6$'s of a 2-connected claw-heavy graph that can guarantee the graph to be hamiltonian. This improves some previous related results.
An edge-colored graph $G$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same, is rainbow connected if any two vertices of $G$ are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number $rc(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. In this paper, we give a sharp upper bound that $rc(G)\leq\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil$ for any 2-connected graph $G$ of order $n$, which improves the results of Caro et al. to best possible.
We prove a sharp Ore-type criterion for hamiltonicity of balanced bipartite digraphs: A bipartite digraph D, with colour classes of cardinality N, is hamiltonian if, for every pair of vertices u and v from opposite colour classes of D such that the arc uv is not in D, the sum of the outdegree of u and the indegree of v is greater than or equal to N+2.
We conjecture that a 2-connected graph $G$ of order $n$, in which $d(x)+d(y)\geq n-k$ for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x$ and $y$, contains a cycle of length $n-k$ ($k<n/2$), unless $G$ is bipartite and $n-k$ is odd. This generalizes to long cycles a well-known degree sum condition for hamiltonicity of Ore. The conjecture is shown to hold for $k=1$.
A path in an edge-colored graph is called {\em rainbow} if no two edges of it are colored the same. For an $\ell$-connected graph $G$ and an integer $k$ with $1\leq k\leq \ell$, the {\em rainbow $k$-connection number} $rc_k(G)$ of $G$ is defined to be the minimum number of colors required to color the edges of $G$ such that every two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by at least $k$ internally disjoint rainbow paths. Fujita et. al. proposed a problem that what is the minimum constant $α>0$ such that for all 2-connected graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices, we have $rc_2(G)\leq αn$. In this paper, w…
The $k$-deck of a graph is the multiset of its subgraphs induced by $k$ vertices. A graph or graph property is $l$-reconstructible if it is determined by the deck of subgraphs obtained by deleting $l$ vertices. We show that the degree list of an $n$-vertex graph is $3$-reconstructible when $n\ge7$, and the threshold on $n$ is sharp. Using this result, we show that when $n\ge7$ the $(n-3)$-deck also determines whether an $n$-vertex graph is connected; this is also sharp. These results extend the results of Chernyak and Manvel, respectively, that the degree list and connectedness are $2$-reconst…
The research in the present paper was motivated by the conjecture of Ryjáček that every locally connected graph is weakly pancyclic. For a connected locally connected graph $G$ of order at least $3$, our results are as follows: If $G$ is $(K_1+(K_1\cup K_2))$-free, then $G$ is weakly pancyclic. If $G$ is $(K_1+(K_1\cup K_2))$-free, then $G$ is fully cycle extendable if and only if $2δ(G)\geq n(G)$. If $G$ is $\{ K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3,K_1+P_4\}$-free or $\{ K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3,K_1+(K_1\cup P_3)\}$-free, then $G$ is fully cycle extendable. If $G$ is distinct from $K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3$ and $\{ K_1+P_4,K_…
This paper studies the propagation connectivity of a random hypergraph $\mathbb{G}$ containing both 2-edges and 3-hyperedges. We find an exact threshold of the propagation connectivity of $\mathbb{G}$: If $I_{ε,r}<-1$, then $\mathbb{G}$ is not propagation connected with high probability; while if $I_{ε,r}>-1$, then $\mathbb{G}$ is propagation connected with high probability, where $I_{ε,r}$ is a constant dependent on the parameters of 2 and 3-edge probabilities.
An edge-colored graph $G$ is rainbow connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number of $G$, denoted $rc(G)$, is the minimum number of colors that are used to make $G$ rainbow connected. In this paper we give a Nordhaus-Gaddum-type result for the rainbow connection number. We prove that if $G$ and $\bar{G}$ are both connected, then $4\leq rc(G)+rc(\bar{G})\leq n+2$. Examples are given to show that the upper bound is sharp for all $n\geq 4$, and the lower bound is sharp for all $n\geq 8$. For the rest small $n=4,5,6,7,$ we al…

We prove that every 3-connected claw-free graph with domination number at most 3 is hamiltonian-connected. The result is sharp and it is inspired by a conjecture posed by Zheng, Broersma, Wang and Zhang in 2020.
We give an upper bound for the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex 2-connected $r$-uniform hypergraph with no Berge cycle of length $k$ or greater, where $n\geq k \geq 4r\geq 12$. For $n$ large with respect to $r$ and $k$, this bound is sharp and is significantly stronger than the bound without restrictions on connectivity. It turned out that it is simpler to prove the bound for the broader class of Sperner families where the size of each set is at most $r$. For such families, our bound is sharp for all $n\geq k\geq r\geq 3$.
In this paper we present some results for a connected infinite graph $G$ with finite degrees where the properties of balls of small radii guarantee the existence of some Hamiltonian and connectivity properties of $G$. (For a vertex $w$ of a graph $G$ the ball of radius $r$ centered at $w$ is the subgraph of $G$ induced by the set $M_r(w)$ of vertices whose distance from $w$ does not exceed $r$). In particular, we prove that if every ball of radius 2 in $G$ is 2-connected and $G$ satisfies the condition $d_G(u)+d_G(v)\geq |M_2(w)|-1$ for each path $uwv$ in $G$, where $u$ and $v$ are non-adjacen…
In 1972 Mader proved that every graph with average degree at least $4k$ has a $(k+1)$-connected subgraph with more than $2k$ vertices. We improve this bound by showing that the constant $4$ can be replaced by $3+\frac{1}{3}$; this bound is sharp.
In this paper, we study (zero) forcing sets which induce connected subgraphs of a graph. The minimum cardinality of such a set is called the connected forcing number of the graph. We provide sharp upper and lower bounds on the connected forcing number in terms of the minimum degree, maximum degree, girth, and order of the graph.
The $k$-independence number of a graph $G$ is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$. In this paper, for each positive integer $k$, we prove sharp upper bounds for the $k$-independence number in an $n$-vertex connected graph with given minimum and maximum degree.
The total eccentricity index of a connected graph is defined as sum of the eccentricities of all its vertices. We denote the set of all connected graphs on $n$ vertices with $k$ pendant vertices by $\mathfrak{H}_{n,k}$ and denote the set of all connected graphs on $n$ vertices with $s$ cut vertices by $\mathfrak{C_{n,s}}$. In this paper, we give the sharp lower and upper bounds on the total eccentricity index over $\mathfrak{H}_{n,k}$ and the sharp lower bound for the same over $\mathfrak{C_{n,s}}$. We also provide the sharp upper bounds on the total eccentricity index over $\mathfrak{C_{n,s}}…
A $3$-connected graph $G$ is essentially $4$-connected if, for any $3$-cut $S\subseteq V(G)$ of $G$, at most one component of $G-S$ contains at least two vertices. We prove that every essentially $4$-connected maximal planar graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $\frac{2}{3}(n+4)$; moreover, this bound is sharp.
Let $a$ and $b$ be positive integers. An even $[a,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for every vertex $v \in V(G)$, $d_H(v)$ is even and $a \le d_H(v) \le b$. Matsuda conjectured that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex 2-edge-connected graph such that $n \ge 2a+b+\frac{a^2-3a}b - 2$, $δ(G) \ge a$, and $σ_2(G) \ge \frac{2an}{a+b}$, then $G$ has an even $[a,b]$-factor. In this paper, we provide counterexamples, which are highly connected. Furthermore, we give sharp sufficient conditions for a graph to have an even $[a,b]$-factor. For even $an$, we conjecture a lower bound for $λ…
The connected domination game is played just as the domination game, with an additional requirement that at each stage of the game the vertices played induce a connected subgraph. The number of moves in a D-game (an S-game, resp.) on a graph $G$ when both players play optimally is denoted by $γ_{\rm cg}(G)$ ($γ_{\rm cg}'(G)$, resp.). Connected Game Continuation Principle is established as a substitute for the classical Continuation Principle which does not hold for the connected domination game. Let $G|x$ denote the graph $G$ together with a declaration that the vertex $x$ is already dominated…
M. Aouchiche and P. Hansen proposed the distance Laplacian and the distance signless Laplacian of a connected graph [Two Laplacians for the distance matrix of a graph, LAA 439 (2013) 21{33]. In this paper, we obtain three theorems on the sharp upper bounds of the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix, then apply these theorems to signless Laplacian matrices and the distance signless Laplacian matrices to obtain some sharp bounds on the spectral radius, respectively. We also proposed a known result about the sharp bound of the signless Laplacian spectral radius has a defect.
In the language of hypergraphs, our main result is a Dirac-type bound: we prove that every $3$-connected hypergraph $H$ with $ δ(H)\geq \max\{|V(H)|, \frac{|E(H)|+10}{4}\}$ has a hamiltonian Berge cycle. This is sharp and refines a conjecture by Jackson from 1981 (in the language of bipartite graphs). Our proofs are in the language of bipartite graphs, since the incidence graph of each hypergraph is bipartite.

Let $λ_{1}(G)$ and $μ_{1}(G)$ denote the spectral radius and the Laplacian spectral radius of a graph $G$, respectively. Li in [Electronic J. Linear Algebra 34 (2018) 389-392] proved sharp upper bounds of $λ_{1}(G)$ based on the connectivity to assure a connected graph to be Hamiltonian and traceable, respectively. In this paper, we present best possible upper bounds of $λ_{1}(G)$ for $k$-connected graphs to be Hamiltonian-connected and homogeneously traceable, respectively. Furthermore, best possible upper bounds of $μ_{1}(G)$ to predict $k$-connected graphs to be Hamiltonian-connected, Hamil…
We solve a problem conjectured by Cheriyan, giving sharp bounds for incidence of certain edge partitions of the connected graph on $n$-vertices. We briefly discuss the history of the problem and relation to node connectivity of strongly regular graphs. We show that the bound cannot be made sharper.
In 2006 Bar{á}t and Thomassen conjectured that every planar $4$-edge-connected $4$-regular simple graph of size divisible by three admits a claw-decomposition. Later, Lai (2007) disproved this conjecture by a family of planar graphs with edge-connectivity $4$ which the smallest one contains $24$ vertices. In this note, we first give a smaller counterexample having only $18$ vertices and next construct a family of planar $4$-connected essentially $6$-edge-connected $4$-regular simple graphs of size divisible by three with no claw-decompositions. This result provides the sharpness for two known …
The Wiener index of a connected graph is the summation of all distances between unordered pairs of vertices of the graph. In this paper, we give an upper bound on the Wiener index of a $k$-connected graph $G$ of order $n$ for integers $n-1>k \ge 1$: \[W(G) \le \frac{1}{4} n \lfloor \frac{n+k-2}{k} \rfloor (2n+k-2-k\lfloor \frac{n+k-2}{k} \rfloor).\] Moreover, we show that this upper bound is sharp when $k \ge 2$ is even, and can be obtained by the Wiener index of Harary graph $H_{k,n}$.
An edge-colored graph $G$ is rainbow connected, if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. In this paper we show that $rc(G)\leq 3$, if $|E(G)|\geq {{n-2}\choose 2}+2$, and $rc(G)\leq 4$, if $|E(G)|\geq {{n-3}\choose 2}+3$. These bounds are sharp.
Let $G$ be a connected undirected graph.~A vertex coloring $f$ of $G$ is an $N_i$-vertex coloring if for each vertex $x$ in $G$, the number of different colors assigned to $N_G(x)$ is at most $i$.~The $N_i$-chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $t_i(G)$, is the maximum number of colors which are used in an $N_i$-vertex coloring of $G$. In this paper, we provide sharp bounds for $t_i(G)$ of a graph $G$ in terms of its vertex cover number, maximum degree and diameter, respectively. We also determine precise values for $t_i(G)$ in some cases.

Let $T$ be a tree, a vertex of degree one is called a leaf. The set of leaves of $T$ is denoted by $Leaf(T)$. The subtree $T-Leaf(T)$ of $T$ is called the stem of $T$ and denoted by $Stem(T).$ In this note, we give a sharp sufficient condition to show that a $K_{1,t}-$free graph has a spanning tree whose stem has a few leaves. By applying the main result, we give improvements of previous related results.
The Kirchhoff index $Kf(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of resistance distances between all unordered pairs of vertices, which was introduced by Klein and Randić. In this paper we characterized all extremal graphs with Kirchhoff index among all graphs obtained by deleting $p$ edges from a complete graph $K_n$ with $p\leq\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$ and obtained a sharp upper bound on the Kirchhoff index of these graphs. In addition, all the graphs with the first to ninth maximal Kirchhoff indices are completely determined among all connected graphs of order $n>27$.
Let $G$ be a $3$-connected graph with a $3$-connected (or sufficiently small) simple minor $H$. We establish that $G$ has a forest $F$ with at least $\left\lceil(|G|-|H|+1)/2\right\rceil$ edges such that $G/e$ is $3$-connected with an $H$-minor for each $e\in E(F)$. Moreover, we may pick $F$ with $|G|-|H|$ edges provided $G$ is triangle-free. These results are sharp. Our result generalizes a previous one by Ando et. al., which establishes that a $3$-connected graph $G$ has at least $\left\lceil|G|/2\right\rceil$ contractible edges. As another consequence, each triangle-free $3$-connected graph…
