For an $n \times n$ independent-entry random matrix $X_n$ with eigenvalues $λ_1, \ldots, λ_n$, the seminal work of Rider and Silverstein asserts that the fluctuations of the linear eigenvalue statistics $\sum_{i=1}^n f(λ_i)$ converge to a Gaussian distribution for sufficiently nice test functions $f$. We study the fluctuations of $\sum_{i=1}^{n-K} f(λ_i)$, where $K$ randomly chosen eigenvalues have been removed from the sum. In this case, we identify the limiting distribution and show that it need not be Gaussian. Our results hold for the case when $K$ is fixed as well as the case when $K$ tends to infinity with $n$.
The proof utilizes the predicted locations of the eigenvalues introduced by E. Meckes and M. Meckes. As a consequence of our methods, we obtain a rate of convergence for the empirical spectral distribution of $X_n$ to the circular law in Wasserstein distance, which may be of independent interest.
We consider the limiting location and limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue in real symmetric ($β$ = 1), Hermitian ($β$ = 2), and Hermitian self-dual ($β$ = 4) random matrix models with rank 1 external source. They are analyzed in a uniform way by a contour integral representation of the joint probability density function of eigenvalues. Assuming the one-band condition and certain regularities of the potential function, we obtain the limiting location of the largest eigenvalue when the nonzero eigenvalue of the external source matrix is not the critical value, and further obtain the …
Consider an $N\times N$ hermitian random matrix with independent entries, not necessarily Gaussian, a so called Wigner matrix. It has been conjectured that the local spacing distribution, i.e. the distribution of the distance between nearest neighbour eigenvalues in some part of the spectrum is, in the limit as $N\to\infty$, the same as that of hermitian random matrices from GUE. We prove this conjecture for a certain subclass of hermitian Wigner matrices.
The goal of this article is to study how much the eigenvalues of large Hermitian random matrices deviate from certain deterministic locations -- or in other words, to investigate optimal rigidity estimates for the eigenvalues. We do this in the setting of one-cut regular unitary invariant ensembles of random Hermitian matrices -- the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble being the prime example of such an ensemble. Our approach to this question combines extreme value theory of log-correlated stochastic processes, and in particular the theory of multiplicative chaos, with asymptotic analysis of large Hanke…
The eigenvalues of the Hatano--Nelson non-Hermitian Anderson matrices, in the spectral regions in which the Lyapunov exponent exceeds the non-Hermiticity parameter, are shown to be real and exponentially close to the Hermitian eigenvalues. This complements previous results, according to which the eigenvalues in the spectral regions in which the non-Hermiticity parameter exceeds the Lyapunov exponent are aligned on curves in the complex plane.
We study the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of Gaussian divisible Hermitian Wigner matrices. These random matrices are obtained by adding an independent GUE matrix to an Hermitian random matrix with independent elements, a Wigner matrix. We prove that Tracy-Widom universality holds at the edge in this class of random matrices under the optimal moment condition that there is a uniform bound on the fourth moment of the matrix elements. Furthermore, we show that universality holds in the bulk for Gaussian divisible Wigner matrices if we just assume finite second moments.
We consider ensembles of $N \times N$ Hermitian Wigner matrices, whose entries are (up to the symmetry constraints) independent and identically distributed random variables. Assuming sufficient regularity for the probability density function of the entries, we show that the expectation of the density of states on {\it arbitrarily} small intervals converges to the semicircle law, as $N$ tends to infinity.
We consider large non-Hermitian real or complex random matrices $X$ with independent, identically distributed centred entries. We prove that their local eigenvalue statistics near the spectral edge, the unit circle, coincide with those of the Ginibre ensemble, i.e. when the matrix elements of $X$ are Gaussian. This result is the non-Hermitian counterpart of the universality of the Tracy-Widom distribution at the spectral edges of the Wigner ensemble.
Consider a Hermitian matrix model under an external potential with spiked external source. When the external source is of rank one, we compute the limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue for general, regular, analytic potential for all values of the external source. There is a transitional phenomenon, which is universal for convex potentials. However, for non-convex potentials, new types of transition may occur. The higher rank external source is analyzed in the subsequent paper.
We establish a large deviation principle for the process of the largest eigenvalue of an Hermitian Brownian motion. By a contraction principle, we recover the LDP for the largest eigenvalue of a rank one deformation of the GUE.

We compare the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble to its non-hermitian counterpart - for the complex Ginibre ensemble. We exploit the mathematical framework based on the generalized Green's functions, which involves a new, hidden complex variable, in comparison to the standard treatment of the resolvents. This new variable turns out to be crucial to understand the pattern of the evolution of non-hermitian systems. The new feature is the emergence of the coupling between the flow of eigenvalues and that of left/right eigenvectors. We analyze local and global equilibria…
We compute the limiting eigenvalue statistics at the edge of the spectrum of large Hermitian random matrices perturbed by the addition of small rank deterministic matrices. To be more precise, we consider random Hermitian matrices with independent Gaussian entries $M_{ij}, i\leq j$ with various expectations. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of such random matrices exhibits, in the large $N$ limit, various limiting distributions depending on both the eigenvalues of the matrix $(\mathbb{E}M_{ij})_{i,j=1}^N$ and its rank.
We prove a local law for eigenvalues of the random Hermitian matrices with external source $W_n=\frac{1}{n}X_n+A_n$ where $X_n$ is Wigner matrix and $A_n$ is diagonal matrix with only two values $a, -a$ on the diagonal. The local law is an essential step to prove the universality conjecture for this random matrix model.
In this short note we address a gaussian property of normal vectors in random non-Hermitian matrices. The approach uses a simple geometric and comparison technique.
We study the Brown measure of certain non-hermitian operators arising from Voiculescu's free probability theory. Usually those operators appear as the limit in *-moments of certain ensembles of non-hermitian random matrices, and the Brown measure gives then a canonical candidate for the limit eigenvalue distribution of the random matrices. A prominent class for our operators is given by polynomials in *-free variables. Other explicit examples include R-diagonal elements and elliptic elements, for which the Brown measure was already known, and a new class of triangular-elliptic elements. Our me…
We are going to study the limiting spectral measure of fixed dimensional Hermitian block-matrices with large dimensional Wigner blocks. We are going also to identify the limiting spectral measure when the Hermitian block-structure is Circulant. Using the limiting spectral measure of a Hermitian Circulant block-matrix we will show that the spectral measure of a Wigner matrix with $k-$weakly dependent entries need not to be the semicircle law in the limit.
We investigate the product of $n$ complex non-Hermitian, independent random matrices, each of size $N\times N$ in the class of elliptic matrices, with independent identically distributed entries. The joint probability distribution of the complex eigenvalues of the product matrix is found to be given by a determinantal point process.
The problem of estimating the smallest singular value of random square matrices is important in connection with matrix computations and analysis of the spectral distribution. In this survey, we consider recent developments in the study of quantitative invertibility in the non-Hermitian setting, and review some applications of this line of research.
In this short note, we revisit the work of T. Tao and V. Vu on large non-hermitian random matrices with independent and identically distributed entries with mean zero and unit variance. We prove under weaker assumptions that the limit spectral distribution of sum and product of non-hermitian random matrices is universal. As a byproduct, we show that the generalized eigenvalues distribution of two independent matrices converges almost surely to the uniform measure on the Riemann sphere.
Considering quantum random walks, we construct discrete-time approximations of the eigenvalues processes of minors of Hermitian Brownian motion. It has been recently proved by Adler, Nordenstam and van Moerbeke that the process of eigenvalues of two consecutive minors of an Hermitian Brownian motion is a Markov process, whereas if one considers more than two consecutive minors, the Markov property fails. We show that there are analog results in the noncommutative counterpart and establish the Markov property of eigenvalues of some particular submatrices of Hermitian Brownian motion.
The dynamics of the eigenvalues (semimartingales) of a Lévy process $X$ with values in Hermitian matrices is described in terms of Itô stochastic differential equations with jumps. This generalizes the well known Dyson-Brownian motion. The simultaneity of the jumps of the eigenvalues of $X$ is also studied. If $X$ has a jump at time $t$ two different situations are considered, depending on the commutativity of $X(t)$ and $X(t-)$. In the commutative case all the eigenvalues jump at time $t$ only when the jump of $X$ is of full rank. In the noncommutative case, $X$ jumps at time $t$ if and only …
Consider an $n \times n$ non-Hermitian random matrix $M_n$ whose entries are independent real random variables. Under suitable conditions on the entries, we study the fluctuations of the entries of $f(M_n)$ as $n$ tends to infinity, where $f$ is analytic on an appropriate domain. This extends the results for symmetric random matrices to the non-Hermitian case.
We give abstract versions of the large deviation theorem for the distribution of zeros of polynomials and apply them to the characteristic polynomials of Hermitian random matrices. We obtain new estimates related to the local semi-circular law for the empirical spectral distribution of these matrices when the 4th moments of their entries are controlled.
In this paper, convergence rates of the spectral distributions of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices are investigated. We show that under conditions of finite 6th moments, the expected spectral distribution of a large quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrix converges to the semicircular law in a rate of $O(n^{-1/2})$ and the spectral distribution itself converges to the semicircular law in rates $O_p(n^{-2/5})$ and $O_{a.s.}(n^{-2/5+η})$. Those results include GSE as a special case.
We consider a square random matrix of size $N$ of the form $P(Y,A)$ where $P$ is a noncommutative polynomial, $A$ is a tuple of deterministic matrices converging in $\ast$-distribution, when $N$ goes to infinity, towards a tuple $a$ in some $\mathcal{C}^*$-probability space and $Y$ is a tuple of independent matrices with i.i.d. centered entries with variance $1/N$. We investigate the eigenvalues of $P(Y,A)$ outside the spectrum of $P(c,a)$ where $c$ is a circular system which is free from $a$. We provide a sufficient condition to guarantee that these eigenvalues coincide asymptotically with th…
We give a new, elementary proof of a key inequality used by Rudelson in the derivation of his well-known bound for random sums of rank-one operators. Our approach is based on Ahlswede and Winter's technique for proving operator Chernoff bounds. We also prove a concentration inequality for sums of random matrices of rank one with explicit constants.
We consider products of independent square non-Hermitian random matrices. More precisely, let X(1),...,X(n) be random matrices with independent entries (real or complex with independent real and imaginary parts) with zero mean and variance 1/N. Soshnikov and O'Rourke showed that the empirical spectral distribution of the product X(1)X(2)..X(n) converges to the n-th power of the circular law. We prove that if the entries of the matrices X(1),...,X(n) satisfy uniform subexponential decay condition, then in the bulk the convergence of the ESD holds up to the optimal scale.
