Improving upon the results of Freiman and Candela-Serra-Spiegel, we show that for a non-empty subset $A\subseteq\mathbb F_p$ with $p$ prime and $|A|<0.0045p$, (i) if $|A+A|<2.59|A|-3$ and $|A|>100$, then $A$ is contained in an arithmetic progression of size $|A+A|-|A|+1$, and (ii) if $|A-A|<2.6|A|-3$, then $A$ is contained in an arithmetic progression of size $|A-A|-|A|+1$.
The improvement comes from using the properties of higher energies.
In the present paper we obtain new upper bound estimates for the number of solutions of the congruence $$ x\equiv y r\pmod p;\quad x,y\in \mathbb{N},\quad x,y\le H,\quad r\in\cU, $$ for certain ranges of $H$ and $|\cU|$, where $\cU$ is a subset of the field of residue classes modulo $p$ having small multiplicative doubling. We then use this estimate to show that the number of solutions of the congruence $$ x^n\equiv λ\pmod p; \quad x\in \N, \quad L<x<L+p/n, $$ is at most $p^{\frac{1}{3}-c}$ uniformly over positive integers $n, λ$ and $L$, for some absolute constant $c>0$. This implies, in part…
We prove that there is a small but fixed positive integer e such that for every prime larger than a fixed integer, every subset S of the integers modulo p which satisfies |2S|<(2+e)|S| and 2(|2S|)-2|S|+2 < p is contained in an arithmetic progression of length |2S|-|S|+1. This is the first result of this nature which places no unnecessary restrictions on the size of S.
Following the sum-product paradigm, we prove that for a set $B$ with polynomial growth, the product set $B.B$ cannot contain large subsets with size of order $|B|^2$ with small doubling. It follows that the additive energy of $B.B$ is asymptotically $o(|B|^6)$. In particular, we extend to sets of small doubling and polynomial growth the classical Multiplication Table theorem of Erdős saying that $|[1..n]. [1..n]| = o(n^2)$.
The aim of this paper is to present a complete description of the structure of finite subsets with small doubling property in ordered nilpotent groups of class 2.
We prove that every set $A\subset\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ with $\mathbb{E}_x\min(1_A*1_A(x),t)\le(2+δ)t\mathbb{E}_x 1_A(a)$ is very close to an arithmetic progression. Here $p$ stands for a large prime and $δ,t$ are small real numbers. This shows that the Vosper theorem is stable in the case of a single set.
Let A be a subset of a group G = (G,.). We will survey the theory of sets A with the property that |A.A| <= K|A|, where A.A = {a_1 a_2 : a_1, a_2 in A}. The case G = (Z,+) is the famous Freiman--Ruzsa theorem.

We determine the structure of a finite subset $A$ of an abelian group given that $|2A|<3(1-ε)|A|$, $ε>0$; namely, we show that $A$ is contained either in a "small" one-dimensional coset progression, or in a union of fewer than $ε^{-1}$ cosets of a finite subgroup. The bounds $3(1-ε)|A|$ and $ε^{-1}$ are best possible in the sense that none of them can be relaxed without tightened another one, and the estimate obtained for the size of the coset progression containing $A$ is sharp. In the case where the underlying group is infinite cyclic, our result reduces to the well-known Freiman's $(3n-3)$-…
Let G be an arbitrary Abelian group and let A be a finite subset of G. A has small additive doubling if |A+A| < K|A| for some K>0. These sets were studied in papers of G.A. Freiman, Y. Bilu, I. Ruzsa, M.C.--Chang, B. Green and T.Tao. In the article we prove that if we have some minor restrictions on K then for any set with small doubling there exists a set Lambda, |Lambda| << K log |A| such that |A\cap Lambda| >> |A| / K^{1/2 + c}, where c > 0. In contrast to the previous results our theorem is nontrivial for large K. For example one can take K equals |A|^η, where η>0. We use an elementary met…
We show that if a finite, large enough subset A of an arbitrary abelian group satisfies the small doubling condition |A + A| < (log |A|)^{1 - epsilon} |A|, then A must contain a three-term arithmetic progression whose terms are not all equal, and A + A must contain an arithmetic progression or a coset of a subgroup, either of which of size at least exp^[ c (log |A|)^{delta} ]. This extends analogous results obtained by Sanders and, respectively, by Croot, Laba and Sisask in the case where the group is that of the integers or a finite field.
We prove several new results on the structure of the subgroup generated by a small doubling subset of an ordered group, abelian or not. We obtain precise results generalizing Freiman's 3k-3 and 3k-2 theorems in the integers and several further generalizations.
We give a comprehensive description of the sets $A$ in finite cyclic groups such that $|2A|<\frac94|A|$; namely, we show that any set with this property is densely contained in a (one-dimensional) coset progression. This improves earlier results of Deshouillers-Freiman and Balasubramanian-Pandey.
The aim of this paper is to present a complete description of the structure of subsets S of an orderable group G satisfying |S^2| = 3|S|-2 and <S> is non-abelian.
We show that a positive proportion of all gaps between consecutive primes are small gaps. We provide several quantitative results, some unconditional and some conditional, in this flavour.
We establish estimates for the number of ways to represent any reduced residue class as a product of a prime and an integer free of small prime factors. Our best results is conditional on the Generalised Riemann hypothesis (GRH). As a corollary, we make progress on a conjecture of Erdös, Odlyzko and Sárközy.
We implement the Maynard-Tao method of detecting primes in tuples to investigate small gaps between primes in arithmetic progressions, with bounds that are uniform over a range of moduli.
We use short divisor sums to approximate prime tuples and moments for primes in short intervals. By connecting these results to classical moment problems we are able to prove that a positive proportion of consecutive primes are within a quarter of the average spacing between primes.
We prove that a positive proportion of the gaps between consecutive primes are short gaps of length less than any fixed fraction of the average spacing between primes.
In a recent joint work with D.A. Goldston and C.Y. Yildirim we just missed by a hairbreadth a proof that bounded gaps between primes occur infinitely often. In the present work it is shown that adding to the primes a much thinner set, called almost prime powers, the union of the set of primes and almost prime powers contains already infinitely many bounded gaps. More precisely it is shown that if we add to the set of primes either almost prime squares having exactly two, nearly equal prime factors or if we add to the set of primes almost prime cubes having exactly three, nearly equal prime fac…
For $δ>0$ sufficiently small and $A\subset \mathbb{Z}^k$ with $|A+A|\le (2^k+δ)|A|$, we show either $A$ is covered by $m_k(δ)$ parallel hyperplanes, or satisfies $|\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)\setminus A|\le c_kδ|A|$, where $\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)$ is the smallest convex progression (convex set intersected with a sublattice) containing $A$. This generalizes the Freiman-Bilu $2^k$ theorem, Freiman's $3|A|-4$ theorem, and recent sharp stability results of the present authors for sumsets in $\mathbb{R}^k$ conjectured by Figalli and Jerison.
In this note, we give an upper bound for the number of elements from the interval $[1,p^{1/4e^{1/2}+ε}]$ necessary to generate the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ with $p$ an odd prime.
In this paper, we apply the method of Maynard and Tao to the set of products of two distinct primes (E2-numbers). We obtain several results on the distribution of E2-numbers and primes. Among others, the result of Goldston, Pintz, Yildirim and Graham on small gaps between m consecutive E2-numbers is improved.
Let $p>5$ be a fixed prime. We obtain an asymptotic formula related to small solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $x_1^2+x_2^2\equiv x_3^2\bmod{p^n}$ where $\max\{|x_1|,|x_2|,|x_3|\}\le p^{νn}$ with $ν>1/2$.
Let $σ(n)$ to be the sum of the positive divisors of $n$. A number is non-deficient if $σ(n) \geq 2n$. We establish new lower bounds for the number of distinct prime factors of an odd non-deficient number in terms of its second smallest, third smallest and fourth smallest prime factors. We also obtain tighter bounds for odd perfect numbers. We also discuss the behavior of $σ(n!+1)$, $σ(2^n+1)$, and related sequences.
In this note, we revisit a result of Benli's and Pollack's on the number of small prime $k^{th}$ power residues. The proof is based on their idea of using reciprocity laws, but the argument is simplified and we prove a slightly stronger bound.
Let $p_n$ denote the $n^{th}$ prime. Goldston, Pintz, and Yildirim recently proved that $ \liminf_{n\to \infty} \frac{(p_{n+1}-p_n)}{\log p_n} =0.$ We give an alternative proof of this result. We also prove some corresponding results for numbers with two prime factors. Let $q_n$ denote the $n^{th}$ number that is a product of exactly two distinct primes. We prove that $\liminf_{n\to \infty} (q_{n+1}-q_n) \le 26.$ If an appropriate generalization of the Elliott-Halberstam Conjecture is true, then the above bound can be improved to 6.
Let $p_n$ is the $n$-th prime. With help of the Cramér-like model, we prove that the set of intervals of the form $(2p_n,\enskip2p_{n+1})$ containing at list 3 primes has a positive density with respect to the set of all intervals of such form.
We prove that every positive integer $n$ which is not equal to $1$, $2$, $3$, $6$, $11$, $30$, $155$, or $247$ can be represented as a sum of a squarefree number and a prime not exceeding $\sqrt{n}$.
In this paper we investigate the distribution of the number of primes which ramify in number fields of degree d <= 5. In analogy with the classical Erdos-Kac theorem, we prove for S_d-extensions that the number of such primes is normally distributed with mean and variance log log X.
Let $χ$ be a Dirichlet character modulo a prime~$p$. We give explicit upper bounds on $q_1<q_2<\dots<q_n$, the $n$ smallest prime nonresidues of $χ$. More precisely, given $n_0$ and $p_0$ there exists an absolute constant $C=C(n_0,p_0)>0$ such that $q_n\leq Cp^{\frac{1}{4}}(\log p)^{\frac{n+1}{2}}$ whenever $n\leq n_0$ and $p\geq p_0$.
Let p be an odd prime, such that p_n<p/2<p_{n+1}, where p_n is the n-th prime. We study the following question: with what probability does there exist a prime in the interval (p, 2p_{n+1})? After the strong definition of the probability with help of the Ramanujan primes ([11], [12])and the introducing pseudo-Ramanujan primes, we show, that if such probability P exists, then P>=0.5. We also study a symmetrical case of the left intervals, which connected with sequence A080359 at OEIS.
Suppose that $1<c<9/8$. For any $m\geq 1$, there exist infinitely many $n$ such that $$ \{[n^c],\ [(n+1)^c],\ \ldots,\ [(n+k_0)^c]\} $$ contains at least $m+1$ primes, if $k_0$ is sufficiently large (only depending on $m$).
The Dirichlet characters of reduced residue systems modulo m are tabulated for moduli m <= 195. The associated L-series are tabulated for m <= 14 and small positive integer argument s accurate to 10^(-50), their first derivatives for m <= 6. Restricted summation over primes only defines Dirichlet Prime L-functions which lead to Euler products (Prime Zeta Modulo functions). Both are materialized over similar ranges of moduli and arguments. Formulas and numerical techniques are well known; the aim is to provide direct access to reference values.
Nagell proved that for each prime $p\equiv 1\pmod{3}$, $p > 7$, there is a prime $q<2p^{1/2}$ that is a cubic residue modulo $p$. Here we show that for each fixed $ε> 0$, and each prime $p\equiv 1\pmod{3}$ with $p > p_0(ε)$, the number of prime cubic residues $q < p^{1/2+ε}$ exceeds $p^{ε/30}$. Our argument, like Nagell's, is rooted in the law of cubic reciprocity; somewhat surprisingly, character sum estimates play no role. We use the same method to establish related results about prime quadratic and biquadratic residues. For example, for all large primes $p$, there are more than $p^{1/9}$ pr…
We introduce a refinement of the GPY sieve method for studying prime $k$-tuples and small gaps between primes. This refinement avoids previous limitations of the method, and allows us to show that for each $k$, the prime $k$-tuples conjecture holds for a positive proportion of admissible $k$-tuples. In particular, $\liminf_{n}(p_{n+m}-p_n)<\infty$ for any integer $m$. We also show that $\liminf(p_{n+1}-p_n)\le 600$, and, if we assume the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture, that $\liminf_n(p_{n+1}-p_n)\le 12$ and $\liminf_n (p_{n+2}-p_n)\le 600$.
A positive integer is called an $E_j$-number if it is the product of $j$ distinct primes. We prove that there are infinitely many triples of $E_2$-numbers within a gap size of $32$ and infinitely many triples of $E_3$-numbers within a gap size of $15$. Assuming the Elliot-Halberstam conjecture for primes and $E_2$-numbers, we can improve these gaps to $12$ and $5$, respectively. We can obtain even smaller gaps for almost primes, almost prime powers, or integers having the same exponent pattern in the their prime factorizations. In particular, if $d(x)$ denotes the number of divisors of $x$, we…
We consider the problem of finding small prime gaps in various sets of integers $\mathcal{C}$. Following the work of Goldston-Pintz-Yildirim, we will consider collections of natural numbers that are well-controlled in arithmetic progressions. Letting $q_n$ denote the $n$-th prime in $\mathcal{C}$, we will establish that for any small constant $ε>0$, the set $\left\{q_n| q_{n+1}-q_n \leq ε\log n \right\}$ constitutes a positive proportion of all prime numbers. Using the techniques developed by Maynard and Tao we will also demonstrate that $\mathcal{C}$ has bounded prime gaps. Specific examples,…
Let c > 0.55. Every large n can be written in the form p +ab, where p is prime, a and b are significantly smaller than x^1/2 and ab is less than n^c. This strengthens a result of Heath-Brown, which has the requirement c>3/4. We introduce the idea of 'intersecting two sieves' as a tool in the proof of this result.
We prove an analogue of a result by Goldston, Pintz and Yildirim for small gaps between primes that split completely in an abelian number field. We prove both a conditional result assuming the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture, and an unconditional result. We also give another proof of the same result in the special case of a quadratic extension of class number 1, which relies on a generalization of the Bombieri-Vinogradov theorem for quadratic number fields.

In this work and its sister paper [5] we give a new proof of the famous Linnik theorem bounding the least prime in an arithmetic progression. Using sieve machinery in both papers, we are able to dipense with the log-free zero density bounds and the repulsion property of exceptional zeros, two deep innovations begun by Linnik and reelied on in earlier proofs.
The main goal of this note is to establish the limits of L. Zhao's techniques for counting solutions to quadratic forms in prime variables. Zhao considered forms with rank at least 9, and showed that these equations have solutions in primes provided there are no local obstructions. We consider in detail the degenerate cases of off-diagonal rank 1 and 2, and improve the rank lower bounds to at least 6 and at least 8 respectively. These results complement a recent breakthrough of Green on the non-degenerate rank 8 case.
