Let G be an arbitrary Abelian group and let A be a finite subset of G. A has small additive doubling if |A+A| < K|A| for some K>0. These sets were studied in papers of G.A. Freiman, Y. Bilu, I. Ruzsa, M.C.--Chang, B. Green and T.Tao. In the article we prove that if we have some minor restrictions on K then for any set with small doubling there exists a set Lambda, |Lambda| << K log |A| such that |A\cap Lambda| >> |A| / K^{1/2 + c}, where c > 0. In contrast to the previous results our theorem is nontrivial for large K. For example one can take K equals |A|^η, where η>0. We use an elementary method in our proof.
We prove that every set $A\subset\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ with $\mathbb{E}_x\min(1_A*1_A(x),t)\le(2+δ)t\mathbb{E}_x 1_A(a)$ is very close to an arithmetic progression. Here $p$ stands for a large prime and $δ,t$ are small real numbers. This shows that the Vosper theorem is stable in the case of a single set.
We show that if a finite, large enough subset A of an arbitrary abelian group satisfies the small doubling condition |A + A| < (log |A|)^{1 - epsilon} |A|, then A must contain a three-term arithmetic progression whose terms are not all equal, and A + A must contain an arithmetic progression or a coset of a subgroup, either of which of size at least exp^[ c (log |A|)^{delta} ]. This extends analogous results obtained by Sanders and, respectively, by Croot, Laba and Sisask in the case where the group is that of the integers or a finite field.
Following the sum-product paradigm, we prove that for a set $B$ with polynomial growth, the product set $B.B$ cannot contain large subsets with size of order $|B|^2$ with small doubling. It follows that the additive energy of $B.B$ is asymptotically $o(|B|^6)$. In particular, we extend to sets of small doubling and polynomial growth the classical Multiplication Table theorem of Erdős saying that $|[1..n]. [1..n]| = o(n^2)$.
For $δ>0$ sufficiently small and $A\subset \mathbb{Z}^k$ with $|A+A|\le (2^k+δ)|A|$, we show either $A$ is covered by $m_k(δ)$ parallel hyperplanes, or satisfies $|\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)\setminus A|\le c_kδ|A|$, where $\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)$ is the smallest convex progression (convex set intersected with a sublattice) containing $A$. This generalizes the Freiman-Bilu $2^k$ theorem, Freiman's $3|A|-4$ theorem, and recent sharp stability results of the present authors for sumsets in $\mathbb{R}^k$ conjectured by Figalli and Jerison.
We study the number of $s$-element subsets $J$ of a given abelian group $G$, such that $|J+J|\leq K|J|$. Proving a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris and Samotij, and improving a result of Green and Morris, who proved the conjecture for $K$ fixed, we provide an upper bound on the number of such sets which is tight up to a factor of $2^{o(s)},$ when $G=\mathbb{Z}$ and $K=o(s/(\log n)^3)$. We also provide a generalization of this result to arbitrary abelian groups which is tight up to a factor of $2^{o(s)}$ in many cases. The main tool used in the proof is the asymmetric container lemma, introdu…
We prove that there is a small but fixed positive integer e such that for every prime larger than a fixed integer, every subset S of the integers modulo p which satisfies |2S|<(2+e)|S| and 2(|2S|)-2|S|+2 < p is contained in an arithmetic progression of length |2S|-|S|+1. This is the first result of this nature which places no unnecessary restrictions on the size of S.
In the paper we prove that any sumset or difference set has large E_3 energy. Also, we give a full description of families of sets having critical relations between some kind of energies such as E_k, T_k and Gowers norms. In particular, we give criteria for a set to be a 1) set of the form H+L, where H+H is small and L has "random structure", 2) set equals a disjoint union of sets H_j, each H_j has small doubling, 3) set having large subset A' with 2A' is equal to a set with small doubling and |A'+A'| \approx |A|^4 / \E(A).
We give a comprehensive description of the sets $A$ in finite cyclic groups such that $|2A|<\frac94|A|$; namely, we show that any set with this property is densely contained in a (one-dimensional) coset progression. This improves earlier results of Deshouillers-Freiman and Balasubramanian-Pandey.
The well--known Freiman--Ruzsa Theorem provides a structural description of a set $A$ of integers with $|2A|\le c|A|$ as a subset of a $d$--dimensional arithmetic progression $P$ with $|P|\le c'|A|$, where $d$ and $c'$ depend only on $c$. The estimation of the constants $d$ and $c'$ involved in the statement has been the object of intense research. Freiman conjectured in 2008 a formula for the largest volume of such a set. In this paper we prove the conjecture for a general class of sets called chains.
We prove results on the structure of a subset of the circle group having positive inner Haar measure and doubling constant close to the minimum. These results go toward a continuous analogue in the circle of Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem from the integer setting. An analogue of this theorem in $\mathbb{Z}_p$ has been pursued extensively, and we use some recent results in this direction. For instance, obtaining a continuous analogue of a result of Serra and Zémor, we prove that if a subset $A$ of the circle is not too large and has doubling constant at most $2+\varepsilon$ with $\varepsilon<10^{-4}$…
We prove several new results on the structure of the subgroup generated by a small doubling subset of an ordered group, abelian or not. We obtain precise results generalizing Freiman's 3k-3 and 3k-2 theorems in the integers and several further generalizations.
The aim of this paper is to present a complete description of the structure of finite subsets with small doubling property in ordered nilpotent groups of class 2.
Let A be a subset of a group G = (G,.). We will survey the theory of sets A with the property that |A.A| <= K|A|, where A.A = {a_1 a_2 : a_1, a_2 in A}. The case G = (Z,+) is the famous Freiman--Ruzsa theorem.
The aim of this paper is to present a complete description of the structure of subsets S of an orderable group G satisfying |S^2| = 3|S|-2 and <S> is non-abelian.
In this paper we determine the number and typical structure of sets of integers with bounded doubling. In particular, improving recent results of Green and Morris, and of Mazur, we show that the following holds for every fixed $λ> 2$ and every $k \geqslant (\log n)^4$: if $ω\to \infty$ as $n \to \infty$ (arbitrarily slowly), then almost all sets $A \subset [n]$ with $|A| = k$ and $|A + A| \leqslant λk$ are contained in an arithmetic progression of length $λk/2 + ω$.
In the present paper we obtain new upper bound estimates for the number of solutions of the congruence $$ x\equiv y r\pmod p;\quad x,y\in \mathbb{N},\quad x,y\le H,\quad r\in\cU, $$ for certain ranges of $H$ and $|\cU|$, where $\cU$ is a subset of the field of residue classes modulo $p$ having small multiplicative doubling. We then use this estimate to show that the number of solutions of the congruence $$ x^n\equiv λ\pmod p; \quad x\in \N, \quad L<x<L+p/n, $$ is at most $p^{\frac{1}{3}-c}$ uniformly over positive integers $n, λ$ and $L$, for some absolute constant $c>0$. This implies, in part…
Improving upon the results of Freiman and Candela-Serra-Spiegel, we show that for a non-empty subset $A\subseteq\mathbb F_p$ with $p$ prime and $|A|<0.0045p$, (i) if $|A+A|<2.59|A|-3$ and $|A|>100$, then $A$ is contained in an arithmetic progression of size $|A+A|-|A|+1$, and (ii) if $|A-A|<2.6|A|-3$, then $A$ is contained in an arithmetic progression of size $|A-A|-|A|+1$. The improvement comes from using the properties of higher energies.
We construct vertex transitive lattices on products of trees of arbitrary dimension $d \geq 1$ based on quaternion algebras over global fields with exactly two ramified places. Starting from arithmetic examples, we find non-residually finite groups generalizing earlier results of Wise, Burger and Mozes to higher dimension. We make effective use of the combinatorial language of cubical sets and the doubling construction generalized to arbitrary dimension. Congruence subgroups of these quaternion lattices yield explicit cubical Ramanujan complexes, a higher dimensional cubical version of Ramanuj…

For a subset $A$ of an abelian group $G$, given its size $|A|$, its doubling $κ=|A+A|/|A|$, and a parameter $s$ which is small compared to $|A|$, we study the size of the largest sumset $A+A'$ that can be guaranteed for a subset $A'$ of $A$ of size at most $s$. We show that a subset $A'\subseteq A$ of size at most $s$ can be found so that $|A+A'| = Ω(\min(κ^{1/3},s)|A|)$. Thus a sumset significantly larger than the Cauchy--Davenport bound can be guaranteed by a bounded size subset assuming that the doubling $κ$ is large. Building up on the same ideas, we resolve a conjecture of Bollobás, Leade…
We determine the structure of a finite subset $A$ of an abelian group given that $|2A|<3(1-ε)|A|$, $ε>0$; namely, we show that $A$ is contained either in a "small" one-dimensional coset progression, or in a union of fewer than $ε^{-1}$ cosets of a finite subgroup. The bounds $3(1-ε)|A|$ and $ε^{-1}$ are best possible in the sense that none of them can be relaxed without tightened another one, and the estimate obtained for the size of the coset progression containing $A$ is sharp. In the case where the underlying group is infinite cyclic, our result reduces to the well-known Freiman's $(3n-3)$-…
