We propose a new version of Wigner-Weyl calculus for tight-binding lattice models. It allows to express various physical quantities through Weyl symbols of operators and Green's functions. In particular, Hall conductivity in the presence of varying and arbitrarily strong magnetic field is represented using the proposed formalism as a topological invariant.
A generalized Weyl quantization formalism for a particle on the circle investigated in \cite{1} is developed. A Wigner function for the state $\hat{\varrho}$ and the kernel $\mathcal{K}$ for a particle on the circle is defined and its properties are analyzed. Then it is shown how this Wigner function can be easily modified to give the number-phase Wigner function in quantum optics. Some examples of such number-phase Wigner function are considered.
We prove criteria for a {\it 'magnetic' Weyl operator} to be in a Schatten-von Neuman class by extending a method developed by H. Cordes, T. Kato and G. Arsu.
We show how to relate the full quantum dynamics of a spin-1/2 particle on R^d to a classical Hamiltonian dynamics on the enlarged phase space R^d x S^2 up to errors of second order in the semiclassical parameter. This is done via an Egorov-type theorem for normal Wigner-Weyl calculus for R^d [Lei10,Fol89] combined with the Stratonovich-Weyl calculus for SU(2) [VGB89]. For a specific class of Hamiltonians, including the Rabi- and Jaynes-Cummings model, we prove an Egorov theorem for times much longer than the semiclassical time scale. We illustrate the approach for a simple model of the Stern-G…
The Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism is developed for spin by means of a correspondence between spherical harmonics and spherical harmonic tensor operators. The analogue of the Moyal expansion is developed for the Weyl symbol of the product of two operators in terms of the symbols for the individual operators, and it is shown that in the classical limit, the Weyl symbol for a commutator equals $i$ times the Poisson bracket of the corresponding Weyl symbols. It is also found that, to the same order, there is no correction in the symbol for the anticommutator.
The Weyl quantization of classical observables on the torus (as phase space) without regularity assumptions is explicitly computed. The equivalence class of symbols yielding the same Weyl operator is characterized. The Heisenberg equation for the dynamics of general quantum observables is written through the Moyal brackets on the torus and the support of the Wigner transform is characterized. Finally, a dequantization procedure is introduced that applies, for instance, to the Pauli matrices. As a result we obtain the corresponding classical symbols.
In the usual formulation of quantum mechanics, groups of automorphisms of quantum states have ray representations by unitary and antiunitary operators on complex Hilbert space, in accordance with Wigner's Theorem. In the phase-space formulation, they have real, true unitary representations in the space of square-integrable functions on phase-space. Each such phase-space representation is a Weyl-Wigner product of the corresponding Hilbert space representation with its contragredient, and these can be recovered by `factorising' the Weyl-Wigner product. However, not every real, unitary representa…
Discussed are some geometric aspects of the phase space formalism in quantum mechanics in the sense of Weyl, Wigner, Moyal and Ville. We analyze the relationship between this formalism and geometry of the Galilei group, classical momentum mapping, theory of unitary projective representations of groups, and theory of groups algebras. Later on we present some generalization to quantum mechanics on locally compact Abelian groups. It is based on Pontryagin duality. Indicated are certain physical aspects in quantum dynamics of crystal lattices, including the phenomenon of "Umklapp-Prozessen"
We study the Weyl-Wigner transform in the case of discrete variables defined in a Hilbert space of finite prime-number dimensionality $N$. We define a family of Weyl-Wigner transforms as function of a phase parameter. We show that it is only for a specific value of the parameter that all the properties we have examined have a parallel with the case of continuous variables defined in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. A geometrical interpretation is briefly discussed.
The relationship between two different asymptotic techniques developed in order to describe the propagation of waves beyond the standard geometrical optics approximation, namely, the Wigner-Weyl kinetic formalism and the complex geometrical optics method, is addressed. More specifically, a solution of the wave kinetic equation, relevant to the Wigner-Weyl formalism, is obtained which yields the same wavefield intensity as the complex geometrical optics method. Such a relationship is also discussed on the basis of the analytical solution of the wave kinetic equation specific to Gaussian beams o…
Weyl quantization and related semiclassical techniques can be used to study conduction properties of crystalline solids subjected to slowly-varying, external electromagnetic fields. The case where the external magnetic field is constant, is not covered by existing theory as proofs involving usual Weyl calculus break down. This is the regime of the so-called quantum Hall effect where quantization of transverse conductance is observed. To rigorously derive semiclassical equations of motion, one needs to systematically develop a magnetic Weyl calculus which contains a semiclassical parameter. Mat…
We develop a pseudo-differential Weyl calculus on nilpotent Lie groups which allows one to deal with magnetic perturbations of right invariant vector fields. For this purpose we investigate an infinite-dimensional Lie group constructed as the semidirect product of a nilpotent Lie grup and an appropriate function space thereon. We single out an appropriate coadjoint orbit in the semidirect product and construct our pseudo-differential calculus as a Weyl quantization of that orbit.
The Weyl-Wigner representations for canonical thermal equilibrium quantum states are obtained for the whole class of quadratic Hamiltonians through a Wick rotation of the Weyl-Wigner symbols of Heisenberg and metaplectic operators. The behavior of classical structures inherently associated to these unitaries is described under the Wick mapping, unveiling that a thermal equilibrium state is fully determined by a complex symplectic matrix, which sets all of its thermodynamical properties. The four categories of Hamiltonian dynamics (Parabolic, Elliptic, Hyperbolic, and Loxodromic) are analyzed. …
This paper is concerned with small parameter asymptotics of magnetic quantum systems. In addition to a semiclassical parameter \eps, the case of small coupling $λ$ to the magnetic vector potential naturally occurs in this context. Magnetic Weyl calculus is adapted to incorporate both parameters, at least one of which needs to be small. Of particular interest is the expansion of the Weyl product which can be used to expand the product of operators in a small parameter, a technique which is prominent to obtain perturbation expansions. Three asymptotic expansions for the magnetic Weyl product of …
We discuss an extension of Toeplitz quantization based on polyanalytic functions. We derive isomorphism theorem for polyanalytic Toeplitz operators between weighted Sobolev-Fock spaces of polyanalytic functions, which are images of modulation spaces under polyanalytic Bargmann transforms. This generalizes well-known results from the analytic setting. Finally, we derive an asymptotic symbol calculus and present an asymptotic expansion of complex Weyl operators in terms of polyanalytic Toeplitz operators.
We show that the Schrödinger equation in phase space proposed by Torres-Vega and Frederick is canonical in the sense that it is a natural consequence of the extended Weyl calculus obtained by letting the Heisenberg group act on functions (or half-densities) defined on phase space. This allows us, in passing, to solve rigorously the TF equation for all quadratic Hamiltonians.
Contrary to the finite dimensional case, Weyl and Wick quantizations are no more asymptotically equivalent in the infinite dimensional bosonic second quantization. Moreover neither the Weyl calculus defined for cylindrical symbols nor the Wick calculus defined for polynomials are preserved by the action of a nonlinear flow. Nevertheless taking advantage carefully of the information brought by these two calculuses in the mean field asymptotics, the propagation of Wigner measures for general states can be proved, extending to the infinite dimensional case a standard result of semiclassical analy…
We present a family of methods, which can describe behaviour of quantum ensembles and demonstrate the creation of nontrivial (meta) stable states (patterns), localized, chaotic, entangled or decoherent from basic localized modes in collective models arising from the quantum hierarchy of Wigner-von Neumann-Moyal equations.
In the presence of a variable magnetic field, the Weyl pseudodifferential calculus must be modified. The usual modification, based on ``the minimal coupling principle'' at the level of the classical symbols, does not lead to gauge invariant formulae if the magnetic field is not constant. We present a gauge covariant quantization, relying on the magnetic canonical commutation relations. The underlying symbolic calculus is a deformation, defined in terms of the magnetic flux through triangles, of the classical Moyal product.
We study the twisted Weyl symbol of metaplectic operators; this requires the definition of an index for symplectic paths related to the Conley-Zehnder index. We thereafter define a metaplectically covariant algebra of pseudo-differential operators acting on functions on symplectic space.
We prove several types of scaling results for Wigner distributions of spectral projections of the isotropic Harmonic oscillator on $\mathbb R^d$. In prior work, we studied Wigner distributions $W_{\hbar, E_N(\hbar)}(x, ξ)$ of individual eigenspace projections. In this continuation, we study Weyl sums of such Wigner distributions as the eigenvalue $E_N(\hbar)$ ranges over spectral intervals $[E - δ(\hbar), E + δ(\hbar)]$ of various widths $δ(\hbar)$ and as $(x, ξ) \in T^*\mathbb R^d$ ranges over tubes of various widths around the classical energy surface $Σ_E \subset T^*\mathbb R^d$. The main r…
In this work, we consider fixed $1/2$ spin particles interacting with the quantized radiation field in the context of quantum electrodynamics (QED). We investigate the time evolution operator in studying the reduced propagator (interaction picture). We first prove that this propagator belongs to the class of infinite dimensional Weyl pseudodifferential operators recently introduced in \cite {A-J-N} on Wiener spaces. We give a semiclassical expansion of the symbol of the reduced propagator up to any order with estimates on the remainder terms. Next, taking into account analyticity properties fo…
Smoothed Wigner transforms have been used in signal processing, as a regularized version of the Wigner transform, and have been proposed as an alternative to it in the homogenization and / or semiclassical limits of wave equations. We derive explicit, closed formulations for the coarse-scale representation of the action of pseudodifferential operators. The resulting ``smoothed operators'' are in general of infinite order. The formulation of an appropriate framework, resembling the Gelfand-Shilov spaces, is necessary. Similarly we treat the ``smoothed Wigner calculus''. In particular this allow…
A relativistic phase-space representation for a class of observables with matrix-valued Weyl symbols proportional to the identity matrix (charge-invariant observables)is proposed. We take into account the nontrivial charge structure of the position and momentum operators. The evolution equation coincides with its analog in relativistic quantum mechanics with nonlocal Hamiltonian under conditions where particle-pair creation does not take place (free particle and constant magnetic field). The differences in the equations are connected with peculiarities of the constraints on the initial conditi…
The concern of this article is a semiclassical Weyl calculus on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space $H$. If $(i, H, B)$ is a Wiener triplet associated to $H$, the quantum state space will be the space of $L^2$ functions on $B$ with respect to a Gaussian measure with $h/2$ variance, where $h$ is the semiclassical parameter. We prove the boundedness of our pseudodifferential operators (PDO) in the spirit of Calderón-Vaillancourt with an explicit bound, a Beals type characterization, and metaplectic covariance. An application to a model of quantum electrodynamics (QED) is added in the last sect…
The theme of this work is that the theory of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field can be generalized to a large class of operators if one uses an extended a class of Weyl operators which we call "Landau--Weyl pseudodifferential operators". The link between standard Weyl calculus and Landau--Weyl calculus is made explicit by the use of an infinite family of intertwining "windowed wavepacket transforms"; this makes possible the use of the theory of modulation spaces to study various regularity properties. Our techniques allow us not only to recover easily the eigenvalues and eigenfuncti…
We discuss topics related to finite-dimensional calculus in the context of finite-dimensional quantum mechanics. The truncated Heisenberg-Weyl algebra is called a TAA algebra after Tekin, Aydin, and Arik who formulated it in terms of orthofermions. It is shown how to use a matrix approach to implement analytic representations of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra in univariate and multivariate settings. We provide examples for the univariate case. Krawtchouk polynomials are presented in detail, including a review of Krawtchouk polynomials that illustrates some curious properties of the Heisenberg-Wey…
One can argue that on flat space $\mathbb{R}^d$ the Weyl quantization is the most natural choice and that it has the best properties (e.g. symplectic covariance, real symbols correspond to Hermitian operators). On a generic manifold, there is no distinguished quantization, and a quantization is typically defined chart-wise. Here we introduce a quantization that, we believe, has the best properties for studying natural operators on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. It is a generalization of the Weyl quantization - we call it the balanced geodesic Weyl quantization. Among other things, we prove that …
A conjecture in quantum mechanics states that any quantum canonical transformation can decompose into a sequence of three basic canonical transformations; gauge, point and interchange of coordinates and momenta. It is shown that if one attempts to construct the three basic transformations in star-product form, while gauge and point transformations are immediate in star-exponential form, interchange has no correspondent, but it is possible in an ordinary exponential form. As an alternative approach, it is shown that all three basic transformations can be constructed in the ordinary exponential …
A mapping between operators on the Hilbert space of $N$-dimensional quantum system and the Wigner quasiprobability distributions defined on the symplectic flag manifold is discussed. The Wigner quasiprobability distribution is constructed as a dual pairing between the density matrix and the Stratonovich-Weyl kernel. It is shown that the moduli space of the Stratonovich-Weyl kernel is given by an intersection of the coadjoint orbit space of the $SU(N)$ group and a unit $(N-2)$-dimensional sphere. The general consideration is exemplified by a detailed description of the moduli space of 2, 3 and …
Classical pseudo-differential calculus on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ can be viewed as a (non-commutative) functional calculus for the standard position and momentum operators $(Q_{1}, \dots , Q_{d})$ and $(P_{1}, \dots , P_{d})$. We generalise this calculus to the setting of two $d$-tuples of operators $A=(A_{1}, \dots , A_{d})$ and $B=(B_{1}, \dots , B_{d})$ acting on a Banach space $X$ such that $iA_{1}, \dots , iA_{d}$ and $iB_{1}, \dots , iB_{d}$ generate bounded $C_0$-groups satisfying the Weyl canonical commutation relations $e^{isA_j}e^{itA_k} = e^{itA_k}e^{isA_j}$, $e^{isB_j}e^{itB_k} = e^{itB_k…
The family of unitary non-equivalent Weyl-Stratonovich kernels determining the Wigner probability distribution function of an arbitrary N-level quantum system is constructed.
The main purpose in the present paper is to build a Hamiltonian theory for fields which is consistent with the principles of relativity. For this we consider detailed geometric pictures of Lepage theories in the spirit of Dedecker and try to stress out the interplay between the Lepage-Dedecker (LP) description and the (more usual) de Donder-Weyl (dDW) one. One of the main points is the fact that the Legendre transform in the dDW approach is replaced by a Legendre correspondence in the LP theory (This correspondence behaves differently: ignoring the singularities whenever the Lagrangian is dege…
We show that the cross Wigner function can be written in the form $W(ψ, ϕ)= \hat S (ψ\otimes \overline{\hatϕ})$ where ${\hatϕ}$ is the Fourier transform of $ϕ$ and $\hat S$ is a metaplectic operator that projects onto a linear symplectomorphism $S$ consisting of a rotation along an ellipse in phase space (or in the time-frequency space). This formulation can be extended to generic Weyl symbols and yields an interesting fractional generalization of the Weyl-Wigner formalism. It also provides a suitable approach to study the Bopp phase space representation of quantum mechanics, familiar from def…
The Wigner function of a finite-dimensional system can be constructed via dual pairing of a density matrix with the Stratonovich-Weyl kernel. Following Kenfack and $\dot{\text{Z}}$yczkowski, we consider the indicator of nonclassicality of a finite-dimensional quantum system which depends on the volume of the negative part of the Wigner function. This indicator is defined over the unitary non-equivalent classes of quantum states, i.e. represents an invariant, but since for a given quantum system there is no unique Wigner function it turns to be sensitive to the choice of representations for the…
The building blocks of Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus start with Weyl operators on a symmetric Fock space. To realize a relativistically covariant version of the calculus we construct representations of Poincare group in terms of Weyl operators on suitably constructed, Bosonic or Fermionic based on the mass and spin of the fundamental particle, Fock spaces. We proceed by describing the orbits of homogeneous Lorentz group on R4 and build fiber bundle representations of Poincaré group induced from the stabilizer subgroups (little groups) and build the Boson Fock space of the Hi…
We develop an abstract framework for the investigation of quantization and dequantization procedures based on orthogonality relations that do not necessarily involve group representations. To illustrate the usefulness of our abstract method we show that it behaves well with respect to the infinite tensor products. This construction subsumes examples coming from the study of magnetic Weyl calculus, the magnetic pseudo-differential Weyl calculus, the metaplectic representation on locally compact abelian groups, irreducible representations associated with finite-dimensional coadjoint orbits of so…
In a first part we propose an introduction to multisymplectic formalisms, which are generalisations of Hamilton's formulation of Mechanics to the calculus of variations with several variables: we give some physical motivations, related to the quantum field theory, and expound the simplest example, based on a theory due to T. de Donder and H. Weyl. In a second part we explain quickly a work in collaboration with J. Kouneiher (math-ph/0211046) on generalizations of the de Donder--Weyl theory (known as Lepage theories). Lastly we show that in this framework a perturbative classical field theory (…

There is a connection between the Weyl pseudodifferential calculus and crossed product C*-algebras associated with certain dynamical systems. And in fact both topics are involved in the quantization of a non-relativistic particle moving in R^n. Our paper studies the situation in which a variable magnetic field is also present. The Weyl calculus has to be modified, giving a functional calculus for a family of operators (positions and magnetic momenta) with highly non-trivial commutation relations. On the algebraic side, the dynamical system is twisted by a cocyle defined by the flux of the magn…
The usual Weyl calculus is intimately associated with the choice of the standard symplectic structure on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\oplus\mathbb{R}^{n}$. In this paper we will show that the replacement of this structure by an arbitrary symplectic structure leads to a pseudo-differential calculus of operators acting on functions or distributions defined, not on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ but rather on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\oplus\mathbb{R}^{n}$. These operators are intertwined with the standard Weyl pseudo-differential operators using an infinite family of partial isometries of $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\longrightarrow L^{2}(…
We present a method for calculating expectation values of operators in terms of a corresponding c-function formalism which is not the Wigner--Weyl position-momentum phase-space, but another space. Here, the quantity representing the quantum system is the expectation value of the displacement operator, parametrized by the position and momentum displacements, and expectation values are evaluated as classical integrals over these parameters. The displacement operator is found to offer a complete orthogonal basis for operators, and some of its other properties are investigated. Connection to the W…
The Weyl-Wigner-Groenewold-Moyal formalism of deformation quantization is applied to cosmological models in the minisuperspace. The quantization procedure is performed explicitly for quantum cosmology in a flat minisuperspace. The de Sitter cosmological model is worked out in detail and the computation of the Wigner functions for the Hartle-Hawking, Vilenkin and Linde wave functions are done numerically. The Wigner function is analytically calculated for the Kantowski-Sachs model in (non)commutative quantum cosmology and for string cosmology with dilaton exponential potential. Finally, baby un…
