We construct a coupled wire model for a sequence of non-Abelian quantum Hall states occurring at filling factors $ν=2/(2M+q)$ with integers $M$ and even(odd) integers $q$ for fermionic(bosonic) states. They are termed $Z_2 \times Z_2$ orbifold states, which have a topological order with a neutral sector described by the $c=1$ orbifold conformal field theory (CFT) at radius $R_{\rm orbifold}=\sqrt{p/2}$ with even integers $p$. When $p=2$, the state can be viewed as two decoupled layers of Moore-Read (MR) state, whose neutral sector is described by the Ising $\times$ Ising CFT and contains a $Z_2 \times Z_2$ fusion subalgebra. We demonstrate that orbifold states with $p>2$, also containing a $Z_2 \times Z_2$ fusion algebra, can be obtained by coupling together an array of MR $\times$ MR wires through local interactions. The corresponding charge spectrum of quasiparticles is also examined. The orbifold states constructed here are complementary to the $Z_4$ orbifold states, whose neutral edge theory is described by orbifold CFT with odd integer $p$ and contains a $Z_4$ fusion algebra.
We study continuous quantum phase transitions that can occur in bilayer fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems as the interlayer tunneling and interlayer repulsion are tuned. We introduce a slave-particle gauge theory description of a series of continuous transitions from the (ppq) Abelian bilayer states to a set of non-Abelian FQH states, which we dub the orbifold FQH states, of which the Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state is a special case. This provides an example in which Z2 electron fractionalization leads to non-Abelian topological phases. The naive "ideal" wave functions and ideal Hamilt…
We introduce a coupled wire model for a sequence of non-Abelian quantum Hall states that generalize the Z4 parafermion Read Rezayi state. The Z4 orbifold quantum Hall states occur at filling factors ν= 2/(2m-p) for odd integers $m$ and $p$, and have a topological order with a neutral sector characterized by the orbifold conformal field theory with central charge $c=1$ at radius $R=\sqrt{p/2}$. When $p=1$ the state is Abelian. The state with $p=3$ is the $Z_4$ Read Rezayi state, and the series of $p\ge 3$ defines a sequence of non-Abelian states that resembles the Laughlin sequence. Our model i…
We study theoretically the parallel quantum wires of the experiment by Auslaender et al. [Science 308, 88 (2005)] at low electron density. It is shown that a Hall effect as observed in two- or three-dimensional electron systems develops as one of the two wires enters the spin-incoherent regime of small spin bandwidth. This together with magnetic field dependent tunneling exponents clearly identifies spin-incoherence in such experiments and it serves to distinguish it from disorder effects.
We demonstrate the emergence of the quantum Hall (QH) hierarchy in a 2D model of coupled quantum wires in a perpendicular magnetic field. At commensurate values of the magnetic field, the system can develop instabilities to appropriate inter-wire electron hopping processes that drive the system into a variety of QH states. Some of the QH states are not included in the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy. In addition, we find operators allowed at any field that lead to novel crystals of Laughlin quasiparticles. We demonstrate that any QH state is the groundstate of a Hamiltonian that we explicitly const…
The coupled-wire construction provides a useful way to obtain microscopic Hamiltonians for various two-dimensional topological phases, among which fractional quantum Hall states are paradigmatic examples. Using the recently introduced flux attachment and vortex duality transformations for coupled wires, we show that this construction is remarkably versatile to encapsulate phenomenologies of hierarchical quantum Hall states: the Jain-type hierarchy states of composite fermions filling Landau levels and the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy states of quasiparticle condensation. The particle-hole conjug…
We consider a honeycomb network built of quantum wires, with each node of the network having a Y-junction of three wires with a ring through which flux can be inserted. The junctions are the basic circuit elements for the network, and they are characterized by 3 x 3 conductance tensors. The low energy stable fixed point tensor conductances result from quantum effects, and are determined by the strength of the interactions in each wire and the magnetic flux through the ring. We consider the limit where there is decoherence in the wires between any two nodes, and study the array as a network of …
The collapse of Hall gaps in the integer quantum Hall liquid in a quantum wire is investigated. Motivated by recent experiment [Pallecchi et al. PRB 65, 125303 (2002)] previous approaches are extended to treat confinement effects and the exchanged enhanced g-factor in quantum wires. Two scenarios for the collapse of the $ν=1$ state are discussed. In the first one the $ν=1$ state becomes unstable at $B_{cr}^{(1)}$, due to the exchange interaction and correlation effects, coming from the edge-states screening. In the second scenario, a transition to the $ν=2$ state occurs at $B_{cr}^{(2)}$, with…
We consider the possibility of creating an adiabatic transition through a narrow neck, or point contact, between two different quantized Hall states that have the same number of edge modes, such as ν=1 and ν=1/3. We apply both the composite fermion and the Luttinger liquid formalism to analyze the transition. We suggest that using such adiabatic junctions one could build a DC step-up transformer, where the output voltage is higher than the input. Difficulties standing in the way of an experimental implementation of the adiabatic junction are addressed.
The construction of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states from the two-dimensional array of quantum wires provides a useful way to control strong interactions in microscopic models and has been successfully applied to the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi states. We extend this construction to the Abelian and non-Abelian $SU(N-1)$-singlet FQH states at filling fraction $ν=k(N-1)/[N+k(N-1)m]$ labeled by integers $k$ and $m$, which are potentially realized in multi-component quantum Hall systems or $SU(N)$ spin systems. Utilizing the bosonization approach and conformal field theory (CFT), we …
It is shown that three-dimensional systems of coupled quantum wires support fractional topological phases composed of closed loops and open planes of two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall subsystems. These phases have topologically protected edge states, and are separated by exotic quantum phase transitions corresponding to a rearrangement of fractional quantum Hall edge modes. Some support for the existence of an extended exotic critical phase separating the bulk gapped fractional topological phases is given. Without electron-electron interactions, similar but unfractionalized bulk gapped p…
The applied voltage along a wire leads to a constant current density and, in turn, the azimuthal magnetic field. The absence of the radial current in a sample bulk requires nonzero radial(Hall) electric field to be present. We show that the longitudinal current itself is exactly that provided by the carriers drift in crossed azimuthal magnetic and Hall electric field. Nonzero carrier viscosity leads to nonuniform current flow dependent on the boundary condition at the inner wire wall. We find the general boundary condition accounting diamagnetic currents. At low temperatures the enhanced carri…
In this paper we use a close connection between the coupled wire construction (CWC) of Abelian quantum Hall states and the theory of composite bosons to extract the Laughlin wave function and the hydrodynamic effective theory in the bulk, including the Wen-Zee topological action, directly from the CWC. We show how rotational invariance can be recovered by fine-tuning the interactions. A simple recipe is also given to construct general Abelian quantum Hall states desceibed by the multi-component Wen-Zee action.
We formulate a theory of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states by considering an anisotropic system consisting of coupled, interacting one dimensional wires. We show that Abelian bosonization provides a simple framework for characterizing the Moore Read state, as well as the more general Read Rezayi sequence. This coupled wire construction provides a solvable Hamiltonian formulated in terms of electronic degrees of freedom, and provides a direct route to characterizing the quasiparticles and edge states in terms of conformal field theory. This construction leads to a simple interpretation…
We study spinless electrons in a single channel quantum wire interacting through attractive interaction, and the quantum Hall states that may be constructed by an array of such wires. For a single wire the electrons may form two phases, the Luttinger liquid and the strongly paired phase. The Luttinger liquid is gapless to one- and two-electron excitations, while the strongly paired state is gapped to the former and gapless to the latter. In contrast to the case in which the wire is proximity-coupled to an external superconductor, for an isolated wire there is no separate phase of a topological…
Motivated by the successful idea of using weakly-coupled quantum electronic wires to realize the quantum Hall effects and the quantum spin Hall effects, we theoretically construct two systems composed of weakly-coupled quantum spin chains, which can exhibit spin analogues of superconductivity and the integer quantum Hall effect. Specifically, a certain bilayer of two arrays of interacting spin chains is mapped, via the Jordan-Wigner transformation, to a negative-$U$ Hubbard model that exhibits superconductivity. In addition, an array of spin-orbit-coupled spin chains in the presence of an suit…
We present a theoretical study of the interplay between topological p-wave superconductivity, orbital magnetic fields and quantum Hall phases in coupled wire systems. First, we calculate the phase diagram and physical observables of a fermionic ladder made of two coupled Kitaev chains, and discuss the presence of two and four Majorana zero modes. Second, we analyze hybrid systems consisting of a Kitaev chain coupled to a Luttinger liquid. By tuning the magnetic field and the carrier density, we identify quantum Hall and charge density wave phases, as well as regimes in which superconductivity …
We investigate a model of hard-core bosons with correlated hopping on the honeycomb lattice in an external magnetic field by means of a coupled-wire approach. It has been numerically shown that this model exhibits at half filling the bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state, which is a symmetry-protected topological phase protected by the $U(1)$ particle conservation [Y.-C. He et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 116803 (2015)]. By combining the bosonization approach and a coupled-wire construction, we analytically confirm this finding and show that it even holds in the strongly anisotropic (quasi-o…
Over the years, many theoretical frameworks have been developed to understand the remarkable physics of the quantum Hall system. In this work we discuss the interplay among quantum wires, Chern-Simons theory, bosonization, and particle-vortex duality, which enable a unified approach for the Laughlin states of the fractional quantum Hall system. Starting from the so-called quantum wires system, which is a semi-microscopic description in terms of 1+1 dimensional theories, we discuss the emergence of 2+1 dimensional low-energy effective field theories by using different maps connecting the micros…
The Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are incompressible non-Abelian topological fluids present in a half-filled electron Landau level, where there is a balanced population of electrons and holes. They give rise to half-integral quantum Hall plateaus that divide critical transitions between integer quantum Hall (IQH) states. On the other hand, there are Abelian FQH states, such as the Laughlin state, that can be understood using partons, which are fermionic divisions of the electron. In this paper, we propose a new family of incompressible paired parton FQH states at filling $ν=1/6…
We show the explicit connection between two distinct and complementary approaches to the fractional quantum Hall system (FQHS): the quantum wires formalism and the topological low-energy effective description given in terms of an Abelian Chern-Simons theory. The quantum wires approach provides a description of the FQHS directly in terms of fermions arranged in an array of one-dimensional coupled wires. In this sense it is usually referred to as a microscopic description. On the other hand, the effective theory has no connection with the microscopic modes, involving only the emergent topologica…
We study one dimensional wires with spin-orbit coupling. We show that in the presence of Zeeman field and strong electron-electron interaction a clean wire may form fractional helical liquid states with phenomenology similar to fractional quantum Hall liquids. Most notably, the wire's two terminal conductance is predicted to show fractional quantized conductance plateaus at low electron density. When the system is proximity-coupled to a superconductor, fractional Majorana bound states may be stabilized. We discuss how disorder destabilizes these fractional phases. Possible experimental realiza…
We study the effects of a perpendicular magnetic field on the spin and charge distribution across a quantum wire. Using momentum resolved tunneling between two parallel wires we measure the dispersion relation for different perpendicular magnetic fields. We find that as the magnetic field increases, a strip of spin polarized electrons separates in the cross section of the wire. We provide a quantitative description of the emerging structure within a Hartree-Fock approximation, showing that it results from exchange interaction between electrons in the wire. We discuss the relation of these resu…
We theoretically study tunneling of Cooper pairs from an s-wave superconductor into two semiconductor quantum wires with strong spin-orbit interaction under magnetic field, which approximate helical Luttinger liquids. The entanglement of electrons within a Cooper pair can be detected by the electric current cross correlations in the wires. By controlling the relative orientation of the wires, either lithographically or mechanically, on the substrate, the current correlations can be tuned, as dictated by the initial spin entanglement. This proposal of a spin-to-charge readout of quantum correla…
Coupled-wire constructions offer particularly simple and powerful models to capture the essence of strongly correlated topological phases of matter. They often rely on effective theories valid in the low-energy and strong coupling limits, which impose severe constraints on the physical systems where they could be realized. We investigate the microscopic relevance of a class of coupled-wire models and their possible experimental realization in cold-atom experiments. We connect with earlier results and prove the emergence of fractional quantum Hall states in the limit of strong inter-wire tunnel…
In the presence of a scattering potential, electron transport in a quantum wire is known to be dramatically modified by backward scattering and unaffected by forward scattering processes. We show that the scenario is quite different in Quantum Spin Hall effect edge states coupled at a constriction. The helical nature of these states leads to the appearance of a forward scattering spin channel that is absent in other Luttinger liquid realizations. Suitably applied ac gate voltages can thus operate on the spin of electrons tunneling across the constriction, and induce in the dc tunneling current…
We have found solution to a model of tunneling between a multi-channel Fermi liquid reservoir and an edge of the principal fractional quantum Hall liquid (FQHL) in the strong coupling limit. The solution explains how the absence of the time-reversal symmetry at high energies due to chiral edge propagation makes the universal two-terminal conductance of the FQHL fractionally quantized and different from that of a 1D Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid wire, where a similar model but preserving the time-reversal symmetry predicts unsuppressed free-electron conductance.
We calculate the tunneling current through long line junctions of a $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall liquid and i) another $ν=5/2$ liquid, ii) an integer quantum Hall liquid and iii) a quantum wire. Momentum resolved tunneling provides information about the number, propagation directions and other features of the edge modes and thus helps distinguish several competing models of the 5/2 state. We investigate transport properties of two proposed Abelian states: $K=8 state and 331 state, and four possible non-Abelian states: Pfaffian, edge-reconstructed Pfaffian, and two versions of the anti-Pfaffian state. …
The charge and spin correlation functions of partially spin-polarized edge electrons of a quantum Hall bar are studied using effective Hamiltonian and bosonization techniques. In the presence of the Coulomb interaction between the edges with opposite chirality we find a different crossover behavior in spin and charge correlation functions. The crossover of the spin correlation function in the Coulomb dominated regime is characterized by an anomalous exponent, which originates from the finite value of the effective interaction for the spin degree of freedom in the long wavelength limit. The ano…
In this work, we investigate the conductance and current correlations properties of a quantum topological inteferometer consisting of a QD coupled to two Majorana Bound States (MBSs) confined at both ends of a 1D topological superconductor ring nanowire. We analyze the ring in its topological non trivial and trivial phases to show that the tunneling conductance, shot noise and fano factor present unique characteristics to distinguish the hallmark of MBSs. We reinforce our findings by taking advantage of the correspondence between the quantum topological interferometer and a dot effectively cou…
Coupled-wire constructions have been widely applied to quantum Hall systems and symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. In this Letter, we use the coupled one-dimensional nonchiral Luttinger liquids with domain-wall structured mass terms as quantum wires to construct the crystalline higher-order topological superconductors (HOTSC) in two-dimensional interacting fermionic systems by two representative examples: $D_4$-symmetric class-D HOTSC and $C_4$-symmetric class-BD\1 HOTSC, with Majorana corner modes on the edge. Furthermore, based on the coupled-wire constructions, the quantum phase t…
We present a coupled-wire construction of a model with chiral fracton topological order. The model combines the known construction of $ν=1/m$ Laughlin fractional quantum Hall states with a planar p-string condensation mechanism. The bulk of the model supports gapped immobile fracton excitations that generate a hierarchy of mobile composite excitations. Open boundaries of the model are chiral and gapless, and can be used to demonstrate a fractional quantized Hall conductance where fracton composites act as charge carriers in the bulk. The planar p-string mechanism used to construct and analyze …
We (re) consider in this paper the problem of tunneling through an impurity in a quantum wire with arbitrary Luttinger interaction parameter. By combining the integrable approach developed in the case of Quantum Hall edge states with the introduction of radiative boundary conditions to describe the adiabatic coupling to reservoirs, we are able to obtain the exact equilibrium and non equilibrium current. One of the most striking features observed is the appearance of negative differential conductances out of equilibrium in the strongly interacting regime g <=.2. In spite of the various charging…
We propose a family of Abelian quantum Hall states termed the non-diagonal states, which arise at filling factors $ν=p/2q$ for bosonic systems and $ν=p/(p+2q)$ for fermionic systems, with $p$ and $q$ being two coprime integers. Non-diagonal quantum Hall states are constructed in a coupled wire model, which shows an intimate relation to the non-diagonal conformal field theory and has a constrained pattern of motion for bulk quasiparticles, featuring a non-trivial interplay between charge symmetry and translation symmetry. The non-diagonal state is established as a distinctive symmetry-enriched …
The possibility of realizing non-Abelian statistics and utilizing it for topological quantum computation (TQC) has generated widespread interest. However, the non-Abelian statistics that can be realized in most accessible proposals is not powerful enough for universal TQC. In this paper, we consider a simple bilayer fractional quantum Hall (FQH) system with the $1/3$ Laughlin state in each layer. We show that interlayer tunneling can drive a transition to an exotic non-Abelian state that contains the famous `Fibonacci'anyon, whose non-Abelian statistics is powerful enough for universal TQC. Ou…
We present the theory of a new type of topological quantum order which is driven by the spin-orbit density wave order parameter, and distinguished by $Z_2$ topological invariant. We show that when two oppositely polarized chiral bands [resulting from the Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling $α_k$, $k$ is crystal momentum] are significantly nested by a special wavevector ${\bf Q}\sim(π,0)/(0,π)$, it induces a spatially modulated inversion of the chirality ($α_{k+Q}=α_k^*$) between different sublattices. The resulting quantum order parameters break translational symmetry, but preserve time-reversal s…
The existence of Wigner crystallization, one of the most significant hallmarks of strong electron correlations, has to date only been definitively observed in two-dimensional systems. In one-dimensional (1D) quantum wires Wigner crystals correspond to regularly spaced electrons; however, weakening the confinement and allowing the electrons to relax in a second dimension is predicted to lead to the formation of a new ground state constituting a zigzag chain with nontrivial spin phases and properties. Here we report the observation of such zigzag Wigner crystals by use of on-chip charge and spin…
We consider an annular superconductor-insulator-superconductor Josephson-junction, with the insulator being a double layer of electron and holes at Abelian fractional quantum Hall states of identical fillings. When the two superconductors gap out the edge modes, the system has a topological ground state degeneracy in the thermodynamic limit akin to the fractional quantum Hall degeneracy on a torus. In the quasi-one-dimensional limit, where the width of the insulator becomes small, the ground state energies are split. We discuss several implications of the topological degeneracy that survive th…
It is well known that while forward scattering has no effect on the conductance of one-dimensional systems, backscattering off a static impurity suppresses the current. We study the effect of a time-dependent point impurity on the conductance of a one-channel quantum wire. At strong repulsive interaction (Luttinger liquid parameter g<1/2), backscattering renders the linear conductance greater than its value e^2/h in the absence of the impurity. A possible experimental realization of our model is a constricted quantum wire or a constricted Hall bar at fractional filling factors nu=1/(2n+1) with…
We examine the local density of states of an impurity level or a quantum dot coupled to a fractional quantum Hall edge, or to the end of a single one-dimensional Luttinger-liquid lead. Effects of an Ohmic dissipative bath are also taken into account. Using both analytical and numerical techniques we show that, in general, the density of states exhibits power-law frequency dependence near the Fermi energy. In a substantial region of the parameter space it simply reflects the behavior of the tunneling density of states at the end of a Luttinger-liquid, and is insensitive either to the value of t…
The effect of an inhomogeneous magnetic field which varies inversely as distance on the ground state energy level of graphene is studied. In this work, we analytically show that graphene under the influence of a magnetic field arising from a straight long current-carrying wire ( proportional to the magnetic field from carbon nanotubes and nanowires) exhibits zero energy solutions. We find that contrary to the case of a uniform magnetic field for which the zero energy modes show the localization of electrons entirely on just one sublattice corresponding to single valley Hamiltonian, zero energy…
Through a theoretical coupled wire model, we construct strongly correlated electronic \emph{integer} quantum Hall states. As a distinguishing feature, these states support electric and thermal Hall transport violating the Wiedemann-Franz law as $\left(κ_{xy}/σ_{xy}\right)/\left[\left(π^{2}k_{B}^{2}T\right)/3e^{2}\right]<1$.We propose a new Abelian incompressible fluid at filling $ν=16$ that supports a bosonic chiral $(E_{8})_{1}$ conformal field theory at the edge and is intimately related to topological paramagnets in (3+1)D. We further show that this topological phase can be partitioned into…
The coupled-wires approach has been shown to be useful in describing two-dimensional strongly interacting topological phases. In this manuscript we extend this approach to three-dimensions, and construct a model for a fractional strong topological insulator. This topologically ordered phase has an exotic gapless state on the surface, called a fractional Dirac liquid, which cannot be described by the Dirac theory of free fermions. Like in non-interacting strong topological insulators, the surface is protected by the presence of time-reversal symmetry and charge conservation. We show that upon b…
We study proximity coupling between a superconductor and counter-propagating gapless modes arising on the edges of Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids with filling fraction $ν=1/m$ (with $m$ an odd integer). This setup can be utilized to create non-Abelian parafermion zero-modes if the coupling to the superconductor opens an energy gap in the counter-propagating modes. However, when the coupling to the superconductor is weak an energy gap is opened only in the presence of sufficiently strong attractive interactions between the edge modes, which do not commonly occur in solid state experime…
Since the discovery of superconductivity and correlated insulator at fractional electron fillings in the twisted bilayer graphene, most theoretical efforts have been focused on describing this system in terms of an effective extended Hubbard model. However, it was recognized that an exact tight binding model on the Moiré superlattice which captures all the subtleties of the bands can be exceedingly complicated. Here we pursue an alternative coupled wire description of the system based on the observation that the lattice relaxation effect is strong at small twist angle, which substantially enla…
We derive low-energy effective field theories for the quantum anomalous Hall and topological superconducting phases. The quantum Hall phase is realized in terms of free fermions with nonrelativistic dispersion relation, possessing a global $U(1)$ symmetry. We couple this symmetry with a background gauge field and compute the effective action by integrating out the gapped fermions. In spite of the fact that the corresponding Dirac operator governing the dynamics of the original fermions is nonrelativistic, the leading contribution in the effective action is a usual Abelian $U(1)$ Chern-Simons t…
Quantum phase transitions out of a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase in (1+1) dimensions into an adjacent, topologically distinct SPT phase protected by the same symmetry or a trivial gapped phase, are typically described by a conformal field theory (CFT). At the same time, the low-lying entanglement spectrum of a gapped phase close to such a quantum critical point is known(Cho et al., arXiv:1603.04016), very generally, to be universal and described by (gapless) boundary conformal field theory. Using this connection we show that symmetry properties of the boundary conditions in bounda…
Systems with topologically protected ground-state degeneracies are currently of great interest due to their potential applications in quantum computing. In practise this degeneracy is never exact, and the magnitude of the ground-state degeneracy splitting imposes constraints on the timescales over which information is topologically protected. In this Letter we use an instanton approach to evaluate the splitting of topological ground-state degeneracy in quasi-1D systems with parafermion zero modes, in the specific case where parafermions are realized by inducing a superconducting gap in pairs o…
The ability to pump quantised amounts of charge is one of the hallmarks of topological materials. An archetypical example is Laughlin's gauge argument for transporting an integer number of electrons between the edges of a quantum Hall cylinder upon insertion of a magnetic flux quantum. This is mathematically equivalent to the equally famous suggestion of Thouless' that an integer number of electrons are pumped between two ends of a one-dimensional quantum wire upon sliding a charge-density wave over a single wave length. We use the correspondence between these descriptions to visualise the det…
