The applied voltage along a wire leads to a constant current density and, in turn, the azimuthal magnetic field. The absence of the radial current in a sample bulk requires nonzero radial(Hall) electric field to be present. We show that the longitudinal current itself is exactly that provided by the carriers drift in crossed azimuthal magnetic and Hall electric field. Nonzero carrier viscosity leads to nonuniform current flow dependent on the boundary condition at the inner wire wall. We find the general boundary condition accounting diamagnetic currents. At low temperatures the enhanced carrier viscosity leads to both the current and azimuthal magnetic field are pushed out the wire bulk towards the inner boundary. Simultaneously, the sample resistance strongly vanishes exhibiting a temperature driven threshold transition. Within low-current limit we calculate the threshold temperature for arbitrary carrier scattering and the sample size. For bulky sample and finite applied current our theory provides the universal phase transition diagram in terms of magnetic field vs temperature.
We study theoretically the parallel quantum wires of the experiment by Auslaender et al. [Science 308, 88 (2005)] at low electron density. It is shown that a Hall effect as observed in two- or three-dimensional electron systems develops as one of the two wires enters the spin-incoherent regime of small spin bandwidth. This together with magnetic field dependent tunneling exponents clearly identifies spin-incoherence in such experiments and it serves to distinguish it from disorder effects.
We demonstrate the emergence of the quantum Hall (QH) hierarchy in a 2D model of coupled quantum wires in a perpendicular magnetic field. At commensurate values of the magnetic field, the system can develop instabilities to appropriate inter-wire electron hopping processes that drive the system into a variety of QH states. Some of the QH states are not included in the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy. In addition, we find operators allowed at any field that lead to novel crystals of Laughlin quasiparticles. We demonstrate that any QH state is the groundstate of a Hamiltonian that we explicitly const…
We report the observation of the circular ac Hall effect where the current is solely driven by the crossed ac electric and magnetic fields of circularly polarized radiation. Illuminating an unbiased monolayer sheet of graphene with circularly polarized terahertz radiation at room temperature generates - under oblique incidence - an electric current perpendicular to the plane of incidence, whose sign is reversed by switching the radiation helicity. Alike the classical dc Hall effect, the voltage is caused by crossed electric and magnetic fields which are however rotating with the light's freque…
The coupled-wire construction provides a useful way to obtain microscopic Hamiltonians for various two-dimensional topological phases, among which fractional quantum Hall states are paradigmatic examples. Using the recently introduced flux attachment and vortex duality transformations for coupled wires, we show that this construction is remarkably versatile to encapsulate phenomenologies of hierarchical quantum Hall states: the Jain-type hierarchy states of composite fermions filling Landau levels and the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy states of quasiparticle condensation. The particle-hole conjug…
We consider a honeycomb network built of quantum wires, with each node of the network having a Y-junction of three wires with a ring through which flux can be inserted. The junctions are the basic circuit elements for the network, and they are characterized by 3 x 3 conductance tensors. The low energy stable fixed point tensor conductances result from quantum effects, and are determined by the strength of the interactions in each wire and the magnetic flux through the ring. We consider the limit where there is decoherence in the wires between any two nodes, and study the array as a network of …
We report on numerical simulations of the intrinsic spin Hall effect in semiconductor quantum wires as a function of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength, the electron density, and the width of the wire. We find that the strength of the spin Hall effect does not depend monotonically on these parameters, but instead exhibits a local maximum. This behavior is explained by considering the dispersion relation of the electrons in the wire, which is characterized by the anticrossing of adjacent subbands. These results lead to a simple estimate of the optimal wire width for spin Hall transport exp…
We use numerical simulations to investigate the spin Hall effect in quantum wires in the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We find that the intrinsic spin Hall effect is highly anisotropic with respect to the orientation of the wire, and that the nature of this anisotropy depends strongly on the electron density and the relative strengths of the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. In particular, at low densities when only one subband of the quantum wire is occupied, the spin Hall effect is strongest for electron momentum along the $[\bar{1}10]$ axis, which is…
In this work we investigated the InAs/InAlAs quantum wires (QWRs) superlattice by optically exciting the structure with near-infrared radiation. By varying the helicity of the radiation at room temperature we observed the circular photogalvanic effect related to the $C_{2v}$ symmetry of the structure, which could be attributed to the formation of a quasi two-dimensional system underlying in the vicinity of the QWRs pattern. The ratio of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms shows an evolution of the spin-orbit interaction in quasi two-dimensional structure with the QWR layer deposition thickness.
The collapse of Hall gaps in the integer quantum Hall liquid in a quantum wire is investigated. Motivated by recent experiment [Pallecchi et al. PRB 65, 125303 (2002)] previous approaches are extended to treat confinement effects and the exchanged enhanced g-factor in quantum wires. Two scenarios for the collapse of the $ν=1$ state are discussed. In the first one the $ν=1$ state becomes unstable at $B_{cr}^{(1)}$, due to the exchange interaction and correlation effects, coming from the edge-states screening. In the second scenario, a transition to the $ν=2$ state occurs at $B_{cr}^{(2)}$, with…
We consider the possibility of creating an adiabatic transition through a narrow neck, or point contact, between two different quantized Hall states that have the same number of edge modes, such as ν=1 and ν=1/3. We apply both the composite fermion and the Luttinger liquid formalism to analyze the transition. We suggest that using such adiabatic junctions one could build a DC step-up transformer, where the output voltage is higher than the input. Difficulties standing in the way of an experimental implementation of the adiabatic junction are addressed.
We present a theoretical study of the interplay between topological p-wave superconductivity, orbital magnetic fields and quantum Hall phases in coupled wire systems. First, we calculate the phase diagram and physical observables of a fermionic ladder made of two coupled Kitaev chains, and discuss the presence of two and four Majorana zero modes. Second, we analyze hybrid systems consisting of a Kitaev chain coupled to a Luttinger liquid. By tuning the magnetic field and the carrier density, we identify quantum Hall and charge density wave phases, as well as regimes in which superconductivity …
We consider circular currents in molecular wires with loop substructures studied within simple tight-binding models. Previous studies of this issue have focused on specific molecular structures. Here we address several general issues. First we consider the quantitative definition of a circular current and adopt a definition that identified the circular component of a loop current as the sole source of the magnetic field induced in the loop. The latter may be associated with the field at the loop center, with the magnetic moment associated with this field or with the total magnetic flux threadi…

The construction of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states from the two-dimensional array of quantum wires provides a useful way to control strong interactions in microscopic models and has been successfully applied to the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi states. We extend this construction to the Abelian and non-Abelian $SU(N-1)$-singlet FQH states at filling fraction $ν=k(N-1)/[N+k(N-1)m]$ labeled by integers $k$ and $m$, which are potentially realized in multi-component quantum Hall systems or $SU(N)$ spin systems. Utilizing the bosonization approach and conformal field theory (CFT), we …
It is shown that three-dimensional systems of coupled quantum wires support fractional topological phases composed of closed loops and open planes of two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall subsystems. These phases have topologically protected edge states, and are separated by exotic quantum phase transitions corresponding to a rearrangement of fractional quantum Hall edge modes. Some support for the existence of an extended exotic critical phase separating the bulk gapped fractional topological phases is given. Without electron-electron interactions, similar but unfractionalized bulk gapped p…
We demonstrate that a split-gate quantum wire in the integer quantum Hall regime can exhibit electronic transport hysteresis for up- and down-sweeps of a magnetic field. This behavior is shown to be due to phase spin transitions between two different ground states with and without spatial spin polarization in the vicinity of the wire boundary. The observed effect has a many-body origin arising from an interplay between a confining potential, Coulomb interactions and the exchange interaction. We also demonstrate and explain why the hysteretic behavior is absent for steep and smooth confining po…
The quantum phase diagram of disordered wires in a strong magnetic field is studied as a function of wire width and energy. The two-terminal conductance shows zero-temperature discontinuous transitions between exactly integer plateau values and zero. In the vicinity of this transition, the chiral metal-insulator transition (CMIT), states are identified that are superpositions of edge states with opposite chirality. The bulk contribution of such states is found to decrease with increasing wire width. Based on exact diagonalization results for the eigenstates and their participation ratios, we c…
From the Kubo formula for transport in a tilted Weyl semimetal we calculate the absorptive part of the dynamic conductivity for both right and left handed circular polarized light. These depend on the real part of the longitudinal conductivity and the imaginary part of the transverse (Hall) conductivity. We include the effect of the chiral anomaly which pumps charge from negative to positive chirality node when the usual ${\bs E}\cdot{\bs B}$ term is included in the electrodynamics and obtain analytic expressions. To calculate the Hall angle we further provide expressions for the imaginary par…
We report on the observation of the circular transversal terahertz photoconductivity in monolayer graphene supplied by a back gate. The photoconductivity response is caused by the free carrier absorption and reverses its sign upon switching the radiation helicity. The observed dc Hall effect manifests the time inversion symmetry breaking induced by circularly polarized terahertz radiation in the absence of a magnetic field. For low gate voltages, the photosignal is found to be proportional to the radiation intensity and can be ascribed to the alignment of electron momenta by the combined actio…
The dissipative response of a quantum system upon a time-dependent drive can be exploited as a probe of its geometric and topological properties. In this work, we explore the implications of such phenomena in the context of two-dimensional gases subjected to a uniform magnetic field. It is shown that a filled Landau level exhibits a quantized circular dichroism, which can be traced back to its underlying non-trivial topology. Based on selection rules, we find that this quantized circular dichroism can be suitably described in terms of Rabi oscillations, whose frequencies satisfy simple quantiz…
An anomalous Hall effect and rectification of a Hall voltage are observed by applying a radio-frequency (rf) current through a single-layered ferromagnetic wire located on a coplanar waveguide. The components of the magnetization precession, both in and perpendicular to the plane, can be detected via the Hall voltage rectification of the rf current by incorporating an additional direct (dc) current. In this paper, we propose a phenomenological model, which describes the time-dependent anisotropic magnetoresistance and time-dependent planer Hall effect. The nonlinearity of the spin dynamics acc…
We construct a coupled wire model for a sequence of non-Abelian quantum Hall states occurring at filling factors $ν=2/(2M+q)$ with integers $M$ and even(odd) integers $q$ for fermionic(bosonic) states. They are termed $Z_2 \times Z_2$ orbifold states, which have a topological order with a neutral sector described by the $c=1$ orbifold conformal field theory (CFT) at radius $R_{\rm orbifold}=\sqrt{p/2}$ with even integers $p$. When $p=2$, the state can be viewed as two decoupled layers of Moore-Read (MR) state, whose neutral sector is described by the Ising $\times$ Ising CFT and contains a $Z_…
Quantum transport properties in quantum Hall wires in the presence of spatially correlated random potential are investigated numerically. It is found that the potential correlation reduces the localization length associated with the edge state, in contrast to the naive expectation that the potential correlation increases it. The effect appears as the sizable shift of quantized conductance plateaus in long wires, where the plateau transitions occur at energies much higher than the Landau band centers. The scale of the shift is of the order of the strength of the random potential and is insensit…
We investigate the ballistic electron transport in a two dimensional Quantum Wire under the action of an electric field ($E_y$). We demonstrate how the presence of a Spin Orbit coupling, due to the uniform electric confinement field gives a non-commutative effect as in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. We discuss how the non commutation implies an edge localization of the currents depending on the electron spins also giving a semi-classical spin dependent Hall current. We also discuss how it is possible obtain a quantized Spin Hall conductance in the ballistic transport regime by de…
We formulate a theory of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states by considering an anisotropic system consisting of coupled, interacting one dimensional wires. We show that Abelian bosonization provides a simple framework for characterizing the Moore Read state, as well as the more general Read Rezayi sequence. This coupled wire construction provides a solvable Hamiltonian formulated in terms of electronic degrees of freedom, and provides a direct route to characterizing the quasiparticles and edge states in terms of conformal field theory. This construction leads to a simple interpretation…
Quantum transport properties in quantum Hall wires in the presence of spatially correlated disordered magnetic fields are investigated numerically. It is found that the correlation drastically changes the transport properties associated with the edge state, in contrast to the naive expectation that the correlation simply reduces the effect of disorder. In the presence of correlation, the separation between the successive conductance plateau transitions becomes larger than the bulk Landau level separation determined by the mean value of the disordered magnetic fields. The transition energies co…
Fendley, Ludwig and Saleur [Phys. Rev. B52 (1995) 8934] have obtained an expression for the non-equilibrium current through a constriction in the quantum Hall bar based on the Bethe ansatz technique and the Bolzmann equation. In this Comment we draw attention to a serious flaw in their derivation. We argue that their result is correct in the linear response limit but should be taken with a care out of equilibrium for finite bias. The reason is in the use of the equilibrium scattering matrix in the place of the transition probability amplitude out of equilibrium, the substitution which was not …

This paper develops a scattering theory to examine how point impurities affect transport through quantum wires. While some of our new results apply specifically to hard-walled wires, others--for example, an effective optical theorem for two-dimensional waveguides--are more general. We apply the method of images to the hard-walled guide, explicitly showing how scattering from an impurity affects the wire's conductance. We express the effective cross section of a confined scatterer entirely in terms of the empty waveguide's Green's function, suggesting a way in which to use semiclassical methods…
Topological states of matter in equilibrium, as well as out of equilibrium, have been thoroughly investigated during the last years in condensed-matter and cold-atom systems. However, the geometric topology of the studied samples is usually trivial, such as a ribbon or a cylinder. In this paper, we consider a graphene Möbius band irradiated with circularly polarised light. Interestingly, due to the non-orientability of the Möbius band, a homogeneous quantum Hall effect cannot exist in this system, but the quantum spin Hall effect can. To avoid this restriction, the irradiation is applied in a …
A two-dimensional honeycomb lattice harbors a pair of inequivalent valleys in the k-space electronic structure, in the vicinities of the vertices of a hexagonal Brillouin zone, K}$_{\pm}$. It is particularly appealing to exploit this emergent degree of freedom of charge carriers, in what is termed "valleytronics", if charge carrier imbalance between the valleys can be achieved. The physics of valley polarization will make possible electronic devices such as valley filter and valley valve, and optoelectronic Hall devices, all very promising for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic appl…
We introduce the spin and momentum dependent {\em force operator} which is defined by the Hamiltonian of a {\em clean} semiconductor quantum wire with homogeneous Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling attached to two ideal (i.e., free of spin and charge interactions) leads. Its expectation value in the spin-polarized electronic wave packet injected through the leads explains why the center of the packet gets deflected in the transverse direction. Moreover, the corresponding {\em spin density} will be dragged along the transverse direction to generate an out-of-plane spin accumulation of opposite sig…
The topological protected electronic states on the surface of a topological insulator can progressively change their Fermi cross-section from circular to a snowflake shape as the chemical potential is increased above the Dirac point because of an hexagonal warping term in the Hamiltonian. Another effect of warping is to change the spin texture which exists when a finite gap is included by magnetic doping, although the in-plane spin component remains locked perpendicular to momentum. It also changes the orbital magnetic moment, the matrix element for optical absorption and the circular dichrois…
We study the transconductance for two coupled one-dimensional wires or edge states described by Luttinger liquid models. The wires are assumed to interact over a finite segment. We find for the interaction parameter $g=1/2$ that the drag rate is finite at zero temperature, which cannot occur in a Fermi-liquid system. The zero temperature drag is, however, cut off at low temperature due to the finite length of the wires. We also consider edge states in the fractional quantum Hall regime, and we suggest that the low temperature enhancement of the drag effect might be seen in the fractional quant…
Motivated by the successful idea of using weakly-coupled quantum electronic wires to realize the quantum Hall effects and the quantum spin Hall effects, we theoretically construct two systems composed of weakly-coupled quantum spin chains, which can exhibit spin analogues of superconductivity and the integer quantum Hall effect. Specifically, a certain bilayer of two arrays of interacting spin chains is mapped, via the Jordan-Wigner transformation, to a negative-$U$ Hubbard model that exhibits superconductivity. In addition, an array of spin-orbit-coupled spin chains in the presence of an suit…
The Effect of Twisting Angle on the Electronic Properties and Electron Transport and Hall Effect in the Twisted Circular and Rectangular Graphene and Graphene/Boron-Nitride Channels
An integral part of scattering theory calculations in continuum quantum systems involves identifying appropriate boundary conditions in addition to writing down the correct Hamiltonian. In the simplest problem of scattering in one dimensional lattice, scattering due to an on-site potential and scattering due to an unequal bond (in otherwise translationally invariant lattice) give different results for scattering amplitudes. While the scattering problems in the continuum and the lattice models can be mapped to one another for scattering due to on-site potential, the equivalent continuum model f…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin textures touted as next-generation computing elements. When subjected to lateral currents, skyrmions move at considerable speeds. Their topological charge results in an additional transverse deflection known as the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE). While promising, their dynamic phenomenology with current, skyrmion size, geometric effects and disorder remain to be established. Here we report on the ensemble dynamics of individual skyrmions forming dense arrays in Pt/Co/MgO wires by examining over 20,000 instances of motion across currents and fields. The skyrmi…
Resonant tunneling through a quantum dot weakly coupled to Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids is discussed. The linear conductance due to sequential tunneling is calculated by solving a master equation for temperatures below and above the average level spacing in the dot. When the parameter g characterizing the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid is smaller than 1/2, the resonant tunneling process is incoherent down to zero temperature. At low temperature T the height and width of the conductance peaks in the Coulomb blockade oscillations are proportional to T^{(1/g)-2} and T, respectively. The contribution fro…
We investigate nuclear spin effects in a two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum Hall regime modeled by a weakly coupled array of interacting quantum wires. We show that the presence of hyperfine interaction between electron and nuclear spins in such wires can induce a phase transition, ordering electrons and nuclear spins into a helix in each wire. Electron-electron interaction effects, pronounced within the one-dimensional stripes, boost the transition temperature up to tens to hundreds of millikelvins in GaAs. We predict specific experimental signatures of the existence of nuclear spin …
Impurities and defects are ubiquitous in topological insulators (TIs) and thus understanding the effects of disorder on electronic transport is important. We calculate the distribution of the random conductance fluctuations $P(G)$ of disordered 2D TI wires modeled by the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) Hamiltonian with realistic parameters. As we show, the disorder drives the TIs into different regimes: metal (M), quantum spin-Hall insulator (QSHI), and ordinary insulator (OI). By varying the disorder strength and Fermi energy, we calculate analytically and numerically $P(G)$ across the entire pha…
Quantum wire superlattices (1D) realized by controlled dislocation slipping in quantum well superlattices (2D) (atomic saw method) have already shown magnetophonon oscillations. This effect has been used to investigate the electronic properties of such systems and prove the quantum character of the physical properties of the wires. By cooling the temperature and using pulsed magnetic field up to 35 T, we have observed both quantum Hall effect (QHE) and Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillations for various configurations of the magnetic field. The effective masses deduced from the values of the fund…
We study the time evolution of the Optical Spin Hall Effect (OSHE), which occurs when exciton-polaritons undergo resonant Rayleigh scattering. The resulting spin pattern in momentum space is quantified by calculating the degree of circular polarization of the momentum space image for each point in time. We find the degree of circular polarization performing oscillations, which can be described within the framework of the pseudospin model by Kavokin et al. (Ref. 1).
We show that quasi-one-dimensional (1D) quantum wires can be written onto the surface of magnetic topological insulator (MTI) thin films by gate arrays. When the MTI is in a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, MTI$/$superconductor quantum wires have especially broad stability regions for both topological and non-topological states, facilitating creation and manipulation of Majorana particles on the MTI surface.
The classical Hall effect, the traditional means of determining charge-carrier sign and density in a conductor, requires a magnetic field to produce transverse voltages across a current-carrying wire. We show that along curved paths -- $\mathrm{\textit{without}}$ any magnetic field -- geometry alone can produce nonlinear transverse potentials that reflect the charge-carrier sign and density. We demonstrate this effect in curved graphene wires where the transverse potentials are consistent with the doping and change polarity as we switch the carrier sign. In straight wires, we measure transvers…
We report on the experimental observation of the non-linear analogue of the optical spin Hall effect under highly non-resonant circularly polarized excitation of an exciton polariton condensate in a GaAs/AlGaAs microcavity. Initially circularly polarized polariton condensates propagate over macroscopic distances while the collective condensate spins coherently precess around an effective magnetic field in the sample plane performing up to four complete revolutions.
We develop a simple model of surface states for topological insulators, developing matching relations for states on surfaces of different orientations. The model allows one to write simple Dirac Hamiltonians for each surface, and to determine how perturbations that couple to electron spin impact them. We then study two specific realizations of such systems: quantum wires of rectangular cross-section and a rectangular slab in a magnetic field. In the former case we find a gap at zero energy due to the finite size of the system. This can be removed by application of exchange fields on the top an…
The quasi-bound and scattered states in a 2DEG subjected to a circular symmetric steplike magnetic profile with zero average magnetic field are studied. We calculate the effect of a random distribution of such identical profiles on the transport properties of a 2DEG. We show that a nonzero Hall resistance can be obtained, although $<B_{z} >=0$, and that in some cases it can even change sign as function of the Fermi energy or the magnetic field strength. The Hall and magnetoresistance show pronounced resonances apart from the Landau states of the inner core, corresponding to the so-called quasi…
The 2-- to 1--dimensional crossover of the localisation length of electrons confined to a disordered quantum wire of finite width $L_y$ is studied in a model of electrons moving in the potential of uncorrelated impurities. An analytical formula for the localisation length is derived, describing the dimensional crossover as function of width $L_y$, conductance $g$ and perpendicular magnetic field $B$ . On the basis of these results, the scaling analysis of the quantum Hall effect in high Landau levels, and the delocalisation transition in a quantum Hall wire are reconsidered.
We theoretically study the circularly polarized light-induced Floquet state in line-node semimetals with time-reversal symmetry and inversion symmetry. It is found that the Floquet state can show the photovoltaic anomalous Hall effect when an applied circularly polarized light gaps out the line node in the bulk and leave Weyl point nodes. The Hall conductivity is sensitive to the location of Fermi level: When the Fermi level locates at the node, the Hall conductivity depends on the radius of line node and is nearly independent of the intensity of light. Away from the line node, the Hall conduc…
Domain wall propagation in cylindrical nanowires with modulations of diameter is a key phenomenon to design physics-oriented devices, or a disruptive three-dimensional magnetic memory. This chapter presents a combination of analytical modelling and micromagnetic simulations, with the aim to present a comprehensive panorama of the physics of pinning of domain walls at modulations, when moved under the stimulus of a magnetic field or a spin-polarized current. For the sake of considering simple physics, we consider diameters of a few tens of nanometers at most, and accordingly domain walls of tra…
We propose a scheme for the generation of photocurrent in bent quantum wires. We calculate the current using a generalized Landauer-Buttiker approach that takes into account the electromagnetic radiation. For circularly polarized light, we find that the curvature in the bent wire induces an asymmetry in the scattering coefficients for left and right moving electrons. This asymmetry results in a current at zero bias voltage. The effect is due to the geometry of the wire which transforms the photon angular momentum into translational motion for the electrons.
Auto-oscillations of magnetization driven by direct spin current have been previously observed in multiple quasi-zero-dimensional (0D) ferromagnetic systems such as nanomagnets and nanocontacts. Recently, it was shown that pure spin Hall current can excite coherent auto-oscillatory dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic nanowires but not in quasi-two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic films. Here we study the 1D to 2D dimensional crossover of current-driven magnetization dynamics in wire-based Pt/$\mathrm{Ni}_{80}\mathrm{Fe}_{20}$ bilayer spin Hall oscillators via varying the wire wi…
A spin Hall current can circulate in a Corbino disk with spin-orbit interactions in the presence of a radial charge current, without encountering the sample edge problem. We have suggested several experiments to directly detect and manipulate the spin Hall current in this system. A fictitious two-dimensional magnetic monopole can be created in a Corbino disk with the Rashba interaction by a circular charge current induced either by a spin Hall current in the presence of a ferromagnetic junction or by a perpendicular external magnetic field.
We consider a system of weakly coupled wires with quantum Hall effect (QHE) and in the presence of a spatially periodic modulation of the chemical potential along the wire, equivalent to a charge density wave (CDW). We investigate the competition between the two effects which both open a gap. We show that by changing the ratio between the amplitudes of the CDW modulation and the tunneling between wires, one can switch between non-topological CDW-dominated phase to topological QHE-dominated phase. Both phases host edge states of chiral and non-chiral nature robust to on-site disorder. However, …
