The classical Hall effect, the traditional means of determining charge-carrier sign and density in a conductor, requires a magnetic field to produce transverse voltages across a current-carrying wire. We show that along curved paths -- $\mathrm{\textit{without}}$ any magnetic field -- geometry alone can produce nonlinear transverse potentials that reflect the charge-carrier sign and density. We demonstrate this effect in curved graphene wires where the transverse potentials are consistent with the doping and change polarity as we switch the carrier sign. In straight wires, we measure transverse potential fluctuations with random polarity demonstrating that the current follows a complex, tortuous path. This geometrically-induced potential offers a sensitive characterization of inhomogeneous current flow in thin films.
The nonlinear Hall effect has opened the door towards deeper understanding of topological states of matter. It can be observed as the double-frequency Hall voltage response to an ac longitudinal current in the presence of time-reversal symmetry. Disorder plays indispensable roles in various linear Hall effects, such as the localization in the quantized Hall effects and the extrinsic mechanisms of the anomalous, spin, and valley Hall effects. Unlike in the linear Hall effects, disorder enters the nonlinear Hall effect even in the leading order. However, the disorder-induced contribution to the …
Nonlinear anomalous Hall effect is the Berry curvature dipole induced second-order Hall voltage or temperature difference in response to a longitudinal electric field or temperature gradient. These are the prominent Hall responses in time reversal symmetric systems. Here, we investigate the family of second-order nonlinear anomalous Hall effects, the electrical, thermoelectric and thermal nonlinear Hall effects in the moiré system of twisted double bilayer graphene. We demonstrate that the nonlinear anomalous Hall signals can be used to probe the topological phase-transitions in moiré systems,…
In time-reversal invariant systems, all charge Hall effects predicted so far are extrinsic effects due to the dependence on the relaxation time. We explore intrinsic Hall signatures by studying quantum noise spectrum of the Hall current in time-reversal invariant systems, and discover intrinsic thermal Hall noises in both linear and nonlinear regimes. As the band geometric characteristics, quantum geometric tensor and Berry curvature play critical roles in various Hall effects, so are their quantum fluctuations. It is found that the thermal Hall noise in linear order of the electric field is p…
Unconventional responses upon breaking discrete or crystal symmetries open avenues for exploring emergent physical systems and materials. By breaking inversion symmetry, a nonlinear Hall signal can be observed, even in the presence of time-reversal symmetry, quite different from the conventional Hall effects. Low-symmetry two-dimensional materials are promising candidates for the nonlinear Hall effect, but it is less known when a strong nonlinear Hall signal can be measured, in particular, its connections with the band-structure properties. By using model analysis, we find prominent nonlinear …
We numerically investigate the second-order nonlinear Hall transport properties of a four-terminal system with time-reversal symmetry and broken inversion symmetry. Within the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, the second-order nonlinear conductances are derived, where the internal Coulomb potential in response to external voltages is explicitly included to guarantee the gauge invariance. For the system with single mirror symmetry Mx, nonlinear Hall properties are only observable in the y direction and contributed solely from the second-order nonlinear effect. From the symmetry point o…
We study nonlinear response of a quantum Hall system in semiconductor-heterostructures via third harmonic generation process and nonlinear Faraday effect. We demonstrate that Faraday rotation angle and third harmonic radiation intensity have a characteristic Hall plateaus feature. These nonlinear effects remain robust against the significant broadening of Landau levels. We predict realization of an experiment through the observation of the third harmonic signal and Faraday rotation angle, which are within the experimental feasibility.
We study nonlinear optical response of graphene in the quantum Hall regime to an intense laser pulse. In particular, we consider harmonic generation process. We demonstrate that the generalized magneto-optical conductivity of graphene on the harmonics of a strong pump laser radiation has a characteristic Hall plateaus feature. The plateaus heights depend on the laser intensity and broadening of Landau levels, so that are not quantized exactly. This nonlinear effect remains robust against the significant broadening of Landau levels. We predict realization of an experiment through the observatio…
The Hall effect occurs only in systems with broken time-reversal symmetry, such as solids under an external magnetic field in the ordinary Hall effect and magnetic materials in the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Here we show a new Hall effect in a nonmagnetic material under zero magnetic field, in which the Hall voltage depends quadratically on the longitudinal current. We observe the effect (referred to as nonlinear AHE) in two-dimensional Td-WTe2, a semimetal with broken inversion symmetry and only one mirror line in the crystal plane. Our angle-resolved electrical measurements reveal that the…
The second-order nonlinear Hall effect illuminates a frequency-doubling transverse current emerging in quantum materials with broken inversion symmetry even when time-reversal symmetry is preserved. This nonlinear response originates from both the Berry curvature dipole and the chiral Bloch electron skew scatterings, reflecting various information of the lattice symmetries, band dispersions, and topology of the electron wavefunctions. Even though many efforts have been put in detecting the nonlinear Hall effect in diverse condensed matter systems, effective manipulation of the two principal me…
Persistent nonlinear Hall effect driven by parallel field across a topological phase transition and intraband sign-reversing integer quantum Hall effect
We observe geometric resonance features of composite fermions on the flanks of the even denominator ν = 1/2 fractional quantum Hall state in high-mobility two-dimensional electron and hole systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells and subjected to a weak, strain-induced, unidirectional periodic potential modulation. The features provide a measure of how close to ν = 1/2 the system stays single-component and supports a composite fermion Fermi sea before transitioning into a ν = 1/2 fractional quantum Hall state, presumably the two-component Ψ331 state.
We study the forces that act on a point flux carrying an integral number of flux units in quantum Hall fluids. Forces due to external fields, Lorentz and Magnus type forces, and the forces due to mutual interaction of point fluxes are considered. The forces are related to the adiabatic curvature associated with families of Landau Hamiltonians. The problem displays distinct features of the quantum Hall fluids with point fluxes on the plane and on the torus, which, however, agree at the thermodynamic limit.
We investigate the influence of surface states on the nonlinear Hall response of non-centrosymmetric time-reversal invariant Weyl semimetals. To do so, we perform a tomography of the Berry curvature dipole in a slab system using a minimal two-band model. We find that in the type-I phase, the nonlinear Hall response is not particularly sensitive to the presence of Fermi arcs or other trivial surface states. However, in the type-II phase, we find that these surface states contribute substantially to the Berry curvature dipole, leading to a strong thickness dependence of the nonlinear Hall respon…
After the experimental realization, the Berry curvature dipole (BCD) induced nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) has attracted tremendous interest to the condensed matter community. Here, we investigate another family of Hall effect, namely, chiral anomaly induced nonlinear Hall effect (CNHE) in multi-Weyl semimetal (mWSM). In contrast to the BCD induced NLHE, CNHE appears because of the combination of both chiral anomaly and anomalous velocity due to non-trivial Berry curvature. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann theory within the relaxation time approximation, we show that, in contrast to the chiral…
The recent observations of nonlinear Hall effect in time-reversal symmetry protected systems and on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators due to an in-plane magnetic field have attracted immense experimental and theoretical investigations in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides and Weyl semimetals. The origin of this type of second order effect has been attributed to the emergence of a Berry curvature dipole, which requires a low-symmetry environment. Here, we propose a mechanism for generating such a second order nonlinear Hall effect in Kane-Mele two-dimensional…
It is well-known that a non-vanishing Hall conductivity requires time-reversal symmetry breaking. However, in this work, we demonstrate that a Hall-like transverse current can occur in second-order response to an external electric field in a wide class of time-reversal invariant and inversion breaking materials, at both zero and twice the optical frequency. This nonlinear Hall effect has a quantum origin arising from the dipole moment of the Berry curvature in momentum space, which generates a net anomalous velocity when the system is in a current-carrying state. We show that the nonlinear Hal…
The recent discovery of the quantum nonlinear Hall effect has revived the field of nonlinear transport. Here, we predict magnetic field-induced nonlinear Hall effect in time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal. We show that the interplay of the band geometric quantities, such as the Berry curvature, and the magnetic part of the Lorentz force can give rise to finite nonlinear Hall conductivity that is linear in the magnetic field. Such nonlinear Hall conductivity can manifest through nonlinear transport measurement as well as nonlinear optical phenomena like photocurrent and the second harmonic g…
The third-order nonlinear Hall effect induced by Berry-connection polarizability tensor has been observed in Weyl semimetals T$_d$-MoTe$_2$ as well as T$_d$-TaIrTe$_4$. The experiments were performed on bulk samples, and the results were interpreted with the semiclassical Boltzmann approach. Beyond the bulk limit, we develop a quantum nonlinear transport theory to investigate the third-order Hall response of a four-terminal setup with time-reversal symmetry in quantum regime. The quantum nonlinear theory is verified on a model system of monolayer MoTe$_2$, and numerical results on the angle-re…
We show that an electric field applied to a strained topological Dirac semimetal, such as Na3Bi and Cd3As2, induces a spin Hall current that is quadratic in the electric field. By regarding the strain as an effective "axial magnetic field" for the Dirac electrons, we investigate the electron and spin transport semiclassically in terms of the chiral kinetic theory. The nonlinear spin Hall effect arises as the cross effect between the regular Hall effect driven by the axial magnetic field and the anomalous Hall effect coming from the momentum-space topology. It provides an efficient way to gener…
An intriguing observation on the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) is the dissipative edge states, where quantized Hall resistance is accompanied by nonzero longitudinal resistance. We numerically investigate this dissipative behavior of QAHE in MTIs with a three-dimensional tight-binding model and non-equilibrium Greens function formalism. It is found that, in clean samples, the geometric mismatch between the detecting electrodes and the MTI sample leads to additional scattering in the central Hall bar, which is similar to the effect of splitting g…
A static electric field generates circulating currents at the surfaces of a magnetoelectric insulator. The anomalous Hall part of the surface conductivity tensor describing such bound currents can change by multiples of $e^2/h$ depending on the insulating surface preparation, and a bulk calculation does not fix its quantized part. To resolve this ambiguity, we develop a formalism for calculating the full surface anomalous Hall conductivity in a slab geometry. We identify a Berry-curvature term, closely related to the expression for the bulk anomalous Hall conductivity, whose value can change b…
In the study of the anomalous Hall effect, the scaling relations between the anomalous Hall and longitudinal resistivities play the central role. The scaling parameters by definition are fixed as the scaling variable (longitudinal resistivity) changes. Contrary to this paradigm, we unveil that the electron-phonon scattering can result in apparent temperature-dependence of scaling parameters when the longitudinal resistivity is tuned through temperature. An experimental approach is proposed to observe this hitherto unexpected temperature-dependence. We further show that this phenomenon also exi…
While the anomalous Hall effect can manifest even without an external magnetic field, time reversal symmetry is nonetheless still broken by the internal magnetization of the sample. Recently, it has been shown that certain materials without an inversion center allow for a nonlinear type of anomalous Hall effect whilst retaining time reversal symmetry. The effect may arise from either Berry curvature or through various asymmetric scattering mechanisms. Here, we report the observation of an extremely large $c$-axis nonlinear anomalous Hall effect in the non-centrosymmetric T$_d$ phase of MoTe$_2…
The electrical Hall effect is the production of a transverse voltage under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Historically, studies of the Hall effect have led to major breakthroughs including the discoveries of Berry curvature and the topological Chern invariants. In magnets, the internal magnetization allows Hall conductivity in the absence of external magnetic field. This anomalous Hall effect (AHE) has become an important tool to study quantum magnets. In nonmagnetic materials without external magnetic fields, the electrical Hall effect is rarely explored because of the constraint by time-rev…
We investigate the possibility of exciting self-oscillation in a perpendicular ferromagnet by the spin Hall effect on the basis of a nonlinear analysis of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation. In the self-oscillation state, the energy supplied by the spin torque during a precession on a constant energy curve should equal the dissipation due to damping. Also, the current to balance the spin torque and the damping torque in the self-oscillation state should be larger than the critical current to destabilize the initial state. We find that the second condition in the spin Hall system is not…
We have studied the breakdown of the integer quantum Hall (QH) effect with fully broken symmetry, in an ultra-high mobility graphene device sandwiched between two single crystal hexagonal boron nitride substrates. The evolution and stabilities of the QH states are studied quantitatively through the nonlinear transport with dc Hall voltage bias. The mechanism of the QH breakdown in graphene and the movement of the Fermi energy with the electrical Hall field are discussed. This is the first study in which the stabilities of fully symmetry broken QH states are probed all together. Our results rai…
We study the quantum nonlinear planar Hall effect in bilayer graphene under a steady in-plane magnetic field. When time-reversal symmetry is broken by the magnetic field, a charge current occurs in the second-order response to an external electric field, as a result of the Berry curvature dipole in momentum space. We have shown that a nonlinear planar Hall effect originating from the anomalous velocity is deduced by an orbital effect of an in-plane magnetic field on electrons in bilayer graphene in the complete absence of spin-orbit coupling. Taking into account the symmetry analysis, we deriv…
The collective plasmonic modes of a metal comprise a pattern of charge density and tightly-bound electric fields that oscillate in lock-step to yield enhanced light-matter interaction. Here we show that metals with non-zero Hall conductivity host plasmons with a fine internal structure: they are characterized by a current density configuration that sharply departs from that of ordinary zero Hall conductivity metals. This non-trivial internal structure dramatically enriches the dynamics of plasmon propagation, enabling plasmon wavepackets to acquire geometric phases as they scatter. Strikingly,…
We predict two spin-dependent transport phenomena in two-dimensional electron systems, which are induced by spatially fluctuating Rashba spin-orbit interaction. When the electron gas is magnetized, the random Rashba interaction leads to the anomalous Hall effect. An example of such a system is a narrow-gap magnetic semiconductor-based symmetric quantum well. We show that the anomalous Hall conductivity reveals a strongly nonlinear dependence on the magnetization, decreasing exponentially at large spin density. We also show that electron scattering from a fluctuating Rashba field in a two-dimen…
The transitions between neighbouring plateaux in the quantum Hall system are observed to follow anti-holomophic scaling with superuniversal scaling exponents, showing that the system contains an emergent sub-modular discrete symmetry and a holomorphic structure at low energies. We identify a class of effective scaling models consistent with this data, which is parametrized by the complex structure of a torus with a special spin structure, in which only the number of fermions (c) remains undetermined. For c = 2 this gives the superuniversal anti-holomorphic scaling potential previously inferred…

We propose a modified Boltzmann nonlinear electric-transport framework which differs from the nonlinear generalization of the linear Boltzmann formalism by a contribution that has no counterpart in linear response. This contribution follows from the interband-coherence effect of dc electric-fields during scattering and is related to the interband Berry connection. As an application, we demonstrate it in the second-order nonlinear Hall effect of the tilted massive Dirac model. The intuitive Boltzmann constructions are confirmed by a quantum kinetic theory, which shows that arbitrary $n$th-order…
Via the application of parallel magnetic field, we induce a single-layer to bilayer transition in two-dimensional electron systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells, and study the geometric resonance of composite fermions (CFs) with a periodic density modulation in our samples. The measurements reveal that CFs exist close to bilayer quantum Hall states, formed at Landau level filling factors $ν=1$ and 1/2. Near $ν=1$, the geometric resonance features are consistent with half the total electron density in the bilayer system, implying that CFs prefer to stay in separate layers and exhibit a tw…

The recently discovered nonlinear Hall effect (NHE) in a few non-interacting systems provides a novel mechanism to generate second harmonic electrical Hall signals under time-reversal-symmetric conditions. Here, we introduce a new approach to engineering NHE by using twisted moiré structures. We find that the twisted WSe$_2$ bilayer exhibits a NHE when tuning the Fermi level to the moiré flat bands. Near half-filling of the first moiré band, the nonlinear Hall signal shows a sharp peak with the generation efficiency at least two orders of magnitude larger than those in previous experiments. We…
Recently, it has been pointed out that the twisting of bilayer WSe$_2$ would generate topologically non-trivial flat bands near the Fermi energy. In this work, we show that twisted bilayer WSe$_2$ (tWSe$_2$) with uniaxial strain exhibits a large nonlinear Hall (NLH) response due to the non-trivial Berry curvatures of the flat bands. Moreover, the NLH effect is greatly enhanced near the topological phase transition point which can be tuned by a vertical displacement field. Importantly, the nonlinear Hall signal changes sign across the topological phase transition point and provides a way to ide…
