We propose a modified Boltzmann nonlinear electric-transport framework which differs from the nonlinear generalization of the linear Boltzmann formalism by a contribution that has no counterpart in linear response. This contribution follows from the interband-coherence effect of dc electric-fields during scattering and is related to the interband Berry connection. As an application, we demonstrate it in the second-order nonlinear Hall effect of the tilted massive Dirac model. The intuitive Boltzmann constructions are confirmed by a quantum kinetic theory, which shows that arbitrary $n$th-order nonlinear dc response up to the first three leading contributions in the weak disorder potential is handled by the same few gauge-invariant semiclassical ingredients.
Recently, the semiclassical theory of the anomalous Hall effect induced by the Berry curvature in Bloch bands has been introduced. The theory operates only with gauge invariant concepts, that have a simple semiclassical interpretation and provides a clear distinction among various contributions to the Hall current. While the construction of such an approach to the anomalous Hall effect problem has been long sought, only the new semiclassical theory demonstrated the agreement with quantitative results of rigorous approaches based on the Green function techniques. The purpose of this work is to …
For the spin Hall effect arising from strong band-structure spin-orbit coupling, a semiclassical Boltzmann theory reasonably addressing the intriguing disorder effect called side-jump is still absent. In this paper we describe such a theory of which the key ingredient is the spin-current-counterpart of the semiclassical side-jump velocity (introduced in the context of the anomalous Hall effect). Applying this theory to spin Hall effects in a two-dimensional electron gas with giant Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we find largely enhanced spin Hall angle in the presence of magnetic impurities when o…
We study the dynamics of semiclassical electrons in (gapped) graphene in two complementary limits, i.e. in the Klein tunneling and valley Hall effect regimes, by scattering wave packets off armchair step potentials and by exposing wave packets to a uniform electric field, respectively. Our numerical wave packet simulation goes beyond semiclassical analytical approximations and standard Klein tunneling treatments and allows to study intra- and intervalley scattering processes. We find distinct Klein tunneling characteristics for low and tall steps, which include unusual Berry curvature induced …
Quantum Hall (QH) states are predicted to display an intriguing non-dissipative stress response to a shear deformation rate, a phenomenon variously known as asymmetric or Hall viscosity, or Lorentz shear response. Just as the QH effect results from the coupling of Chern-Simons fields of the effective theory to the electromagnetic field, so also Hall viscosity is found to arise from coupling of these fields to the 'metric' of the quadratic kinetic energy. In this paper I derive new physical insights for Hall viscosity by using an extended semiclassical approach to compute the conductivity of a …
The crossover from the semiclassical transport to quantum Hall effect is studied by examining a two-dimensional electron system in an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. By probing the magneto-oscillations, it is shown that the semiclassical Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) formulation can be valid even when the minima of the longitudinal resistivity approach zero. The extension of the applicable range of the SdH theory could be due to the damping effects resulting from disorder and temperature. Moreover, we observed plateau-plateau transition like behavior with such an extension. From our study, it is import…
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a consequence of spin-orbit coupling in a ferromagnetic metal and is related primarily to density-matrix response to an electric field that is off-diagonal in band index. For this reason disorder contributions to the AHE are difficult to treat systematically using a semi-classical Boltzmann equation approach, even when weak localization corrections are disregarded. In this article we explicitly demonstrate the equivalence of an appropriately modified semiclassical transport theory which includes anomalous velocity and side jump contributions and microscopic K…
The linear intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (IAHE) and second-order IAHE have been intensively investigated in time-reversal broken systems. However, as one of the important members of the nonlinear Hall family, the investigation of third-order IAHE remains absent due to the lack of an appropriate theoretical approach, although the third-order extrinsic AHE has been studied within the framework of first- and second-order semiclassical theory. Herein, we generalize the semiclassical theory for Bloch electrons under the uniform electric field up to the third-order using wavepacket method and base…
We derive semiclassical ground state solutions that correspond to the quantum Hall states earlier found in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix theory. They realize the Jain composite-fermion construction and their density is piecewise constant as that of phenomenological wave functions. These results support the matrix theory as a possible effective theory of the fractional Hall effect. A crucial role is played by the constraint limiting the degeneracy of matrix states: we find its explicit gauge invariant form and clarify its physical interpretation.
Semiclassical chiral fermions manifest the anomalous spin-Hall effect: when put into a pure electric field they suffer a side jump, analogous to what happens to their massive counterparts in non-commutative mechanics. The transverse shift is consistent with the conservation of the angular momentum. In a pure magnetic field instead, spiraling motion is found. Motion in Hall-type perpendicular electric and magnetic fields is also studied.
We propose a gauge invariant expression for the side jump associated with scattering between particular Bloch states. Our expression for the side jump follows from the Born series expansion for the scattering T-matrix in powers of the strength of the scattering potential. Given our gauge invariant side jump expression, it is possible to construct a semiclassical Boltzmann theory of the anomalous Hall effect which expresses all previously identified contributions in terms of gauge invariant quantities and does not refer explicitly to off-diagonal terms in the density-matrix response.
We make a semiclassical analysis of thermal pair creations of quasiparticles at various filling factors in quantum Hall systems. It is argued that the gap energy is reduced considerably by the Coulomb potential made by impurities. It is also shown that a tunneling process becomes important at low temperature and at strong magnetic field. We fit typical experimental data excellently based on our semiclassical results of the gap energy.
Analysis of edge-state energies in the integer quantum Hall effect is carried out within the semiclassical approximation. When the system is wide so that each edge can be considered separatly, this problem is equivalent to that of a one dimensional harmonic oscillator centered at x=x_c and an infinite wall at x=0, and appears in numerous physical contexts. The eigenvalues E_n(x_c) for a given quantum number n are solutions of the equation S(E,x_c)=π[n+ γ(E,x_c)] where S is the WKB action and 0<γ<1 encodes all the information on the connection procedure at the turning points. A careful implicat…
Magneto-transport measurements are performed on two-dimensional GaAs electron systems to probe the quantum Hall (QH) effect at low magnetic fields. Oscillations following the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) formula are observed in the transition from the insulator to QH liquid when the observed almost temperature-independent Hall slope indicates insignificant interaction correction. Our study shows that the existence of SdH oscillations in such a transition can be understood based on the non-interacting model.
The semiclassical transport theory is especially powerful for investigating galvanomagnetic effects. Generally, the semiclassical theory is applicable only in weak fields because it does not consider Landau quantization. Herein, we extend the conventional semiclassical theory by considering Landau quantization through the field dependence of carrier density in semimetals. The extended semiclassical theory is applicable even in strong fields, where Landau quantization is noticeable. Using this new approach, we explain the qualitative change in the angular dependence of transverse magnetoresista…
Transverse current due to Berry curvature in phase space is formulated based on the Boltzmann equations with the semiclassical equations of motion for an electron wave packet. It is shown that the Hall effect due to the phase space Berry curvature is absent because the contributions from "anomalous velocity" and "effective Lorentz force" are completely cancelled out.
Instanton analysis for the spin quantum Hall symmetry class: Non-perturbative corrections to physical observables and generalized multifractal spectrum
We examine the influence of the edge electronic density profile and of dissipation on edge magnetoplasmons in the quantum Hall regime, in a semiclassical calculation. The equilibrium electron density on the edge, obtained using a Thomas-Fermi approach, has incompressible stripes produced by energy gaps responsible for the quantum Hall effect. We find that these stripes have an unobservably small effect on the edge magnetoplasmons. But dissipation, included phenomenologically in the local conductivity, proves to produce significant oscillations in the strength and speed of edge magnetoplasmons …
Electron tunneling into a system with strong interactions is known to exhibit an anomaly, in which the tunneling conductance vanishes continuously at low energy due to many-body interactions. Recent measurements have probed this anomaly in a quantum Hall bilayer of the half-filled Landau level, and shown that the anomaly apparently gets stronger as the half-filled Landau level is increasingly spin polarized. Motivated by this result, we construct a semiclassical hydrodynamic theory of the tunneling anomaly in terms of the charge-spreading action associated with tunneling between two copies of …

We study how the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity is modified in two-dimensional crystals with broken time-reversal symmetry due to weak inhomogeneity of the applied electric field. Focusing on a clean noninteracting two-band system without band crossings, we derive the general expression for the Hall conductivity at small finite wave vector $q$ to order $q^2$, which governs the Hall response to the second gradient of the electric field. Using the Kubo formula, we show that the answer can be expressed through the Berry curvature, Fubini-Study quantum metric, and the rank-3 symmetric tenso…
Up to almost the last two decades all the experimental results concerning the quantum Hall effect (QHE), i.e., the observation of plateaux at integer (IQHE) or fractional (FQHE) values of the constant h/e2, were related to quantum-wells in semiconductor heterostructures (QWs). However, more recently, a renewed interest in revisiting these phenomena has arisen thanks to the observation of entirely similar effects in graphene and topological insulators. In this paper we show an approach encompassing all these QHEs using the same theoretical frame, entailing both Hall effect plateaux and Shubniko…
We study the phase diagram of the quantum Hall effect in four-dimensional (4D) space. Unlike in 2D, in 4D there exists a metallic as well as an insulating phase, depending on the disorder strength. The critical exponent $ν\approx 1.2$ of the diverging localization length at the quantum Hall insulator-to-metal transition differs from the semiclassical value $ν=1$ of 4D Anderson transitions in the presence of time-reversal symmetry. Our numerical analysis is based on a mapping of the 4D Hamiltonian onto a 1D dynamical system, providing a route towards the experimental realization of the 4D quant…
We start closing a gap in the comparison of experimental and theoretical data associated with the spin Hall effect. Based on a first-principles characterization of electronic structure and a semiclassical description of electron transport, we compute the skew-scattering contribution to the transverse spin and charge currents generated by spin and anomalous Hall effect in a Co/Cu multilayer system doped with Bi impurities. The fact that the created currents cross the interface between the two materials strongly influences the efficiency of charge to spin current conversion, as demonstrated by o…
We generalize a semiclassical theory and use the argument of angular momentum conservation to examine the ballistic transport in lightly-doped Weyl semimetals, taking into account various phase-space Berry curvatures. We predict universal transverse shifts of the wave-packet center in transmission and reflection, perpendicular to the direction in which the Fermi energy or velocities change adiabatically. The anomalous shifts are opposite for electrons with different chirality, and can be made imbalanced by breaking inversion symmetry. We discuss how to utilize local gates, strain effects, and …
Electrons moving through a noncoplanar magnetic texture acquire a Berry phase, which can be described as an effective magnetic field. This effect is known as the topological Hall effect and has been observed in topological spin textures. Motivated by recent experimental realizations, here we study the Hall effect in a nontopological magnetic texture known as a target skyrmion. We start from a simplified semiclassical picture and show that the Hall signal is a nonmonotonic function of both the electronic energy and target skyrmion radius. That observation carries over to the fully quantum mecha…
We predict a specific type of charge Hall effect in undoped ferromagnetic graphene that is generated by the spin Hall mechanism in the absence of an external magnetic field. The essential feature is the so-called spin chiral configuration of the spin subbands in such a magnetic material where carriers with opposite spin direction are of different type of electron-like or hole-like. Within the semiclassical theory of spin-orbital dynamics of electrons, we obtain that a longitudinal electric field can produce a spin-orbit transverse current of pure charge with no polarization of the spin and the…
We show that an electric field applied to a strained topological Dirac semimetal, such as Na3Bi and Cd3As2, induces a spin Hall current that is quadratic in the electric field. By regarding the strain as an effective "axial magnetic field" for the Dirac electrons, we investigate the electron and spin transport semiclassically in terms of the chiral kinetic theory. The nonlinear spin Hall effect arises as the cross effect between the regular Hall effect driven by the axial magnetic field and the anomalous Hall effect coming from the momentum-space topology. It provides an efficient way to gener…
After the experimental realization, the Berry curvature dipole (BCD) induced nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) has attracted tremendous interest to the condensed matter community. Here, we investigate another family of Hall effect, namely, chiral anomaly induced nonlinear Hall effect (CNHE) in multi-Weyl semimetal (mWSM). In contrast to the BCD induced NLHE, CNHE appears because of the combination of both chiral anomaly and anomalous velocity due to non-trivial Berry curvature. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann theory within the relaxation time approximation, we show that, in contrast to the chiral…
Recent reports of spin-orbit coupling enhancement in chemically modified graphene have opened doors to studies of the spin Hall effect with massless chiral fermions. Here, we theoretically investigate the interaction and impurity density dependence of the extrinsic spin Hall effect in spin-orbit coupled graphene. We present a nonperturbative quantum diagrammatic calculation of the spin Hall response function in the strong-coupling regime that incorporates skew scattering and anomalous impurity density-independent contributions on equal footing. The spin Hall conductivity dependence on Fermi en…
The anomalous velocity term in the semiclassical model of a Bloch electron deviates the trajectory from the conventional one. When the Berry curvature (alias noncommutative parameter) is a monopole in momentum space as found recently in some ferromagnetic semiconductors while observing the anomalous Hall effect, we get a transverse shift, similar to that in the optical Hall effect.
We develop a Chern-Simons theory to describe a two-dimensional electron gas in intermediate magnetic fields. Within this approach, inhomogeneous states emerge in analogy to the intermediate state of a superconductor. At half filling of the highest Landau level we find unidirectional charge-density-wave (CDW) solutions. With a semiclassical calculation we give an intuitive explanation of the change of CDW orientation in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. An anisotropy in the electron band mass is suggested as a possible source of the reproducible orientation of the CDW.
We extend the semiclassical Boltzmann formalism for the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in nondegenerate multiband electron systems to the spin Hall effect (SHE) and unconventional Edelstein effect (UEE, cannot be accounted for by the conventional Boltzmann equation, unlike the conventional Edelstein effect). This extension is confirmed by extending the Kohn-Luttinger density-matrix transport theory in the weak disorder-potential regime. By performing Kubo linear response calculations in a prototypical multiband model, the Boltzmann scaling for the AHE/SHE and UEE is found to be valid only if the …
We numerically investigate the second-order nonlinear Hall transport properties of a four-terminal system with time-reversal symmetry and broken inversion symmetry. Within the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, the second-order nonlinear conductances are derived, where the internal Coulomb potential in response to external voltages is explicitly included to guarantee the gauge invariance. For the system with single mirror symmetry Mx, nonlinear Hall properties are only observable in the y direction and contributed solely from the second-order nonlinear effect. From the symmetry point o…
The unconventional (half-integer) quantum Hall effect for a single species of Dirac fermions is analyzed. We discuss possible experimental measurements of the half-integer Hall conductance $g_{xy}$ of topological insulator surface states and explain how to reconcile Laughlin's flux insertion argument with half-integer $g_{xy}$. Using a vortex state representation of Landau Level wavefunctions, we calculate current density beyond linear response, which is in particular relevant to the topological image monopole effect. As a major result, the field theory describing the localization physics of t…
The recent realization of epitaxial SrCoO$_3$ thin films has triggered a renewed interest in their electronic, magnetic, and ionic properties. Here we uncover several unusual magneto-transport properties of this compound, suggesting that it hosts persistent spin fluctuation down to low temperatures. We achieve the metallic SrCoO$_3$ with record-low resistivity from insulating SrCoO$_{2.5}$ by the ionic liquid gating. We find a linear relationship between the anomalous Hall resistivity and the longitudinal resistivity, which cannot be accounted for by the conventional mechanisms. We theoretical…
We present a perturbative approach to derive the semiclassical equations of motion for the two-dimensional electron dynamics under the simultaneous presence of static electric and magnetic fields, where the quantized Hall conductance is known to be directly related to the topological properties of translationally invariant magnetic Bloch bands. In close analogy to this approach, we develop a perturbative theory of two-dimensional photonic transport in gyrotropic photonic crystals to mimic the physics of quantum Hall systems. We show that a suitable permittivity grading of a gyrotropic photonic…
Spin Hall effect (SHE) has been discussed in the context of Kubo formulation, geometric physics, spin orbit force, and numerous semi-classical treatments. It can be confusing if the different pictures have partial or overlapping claims of contribution to the SHE. In this article, we present a gauge-theoretic, time-momentum elucidation, which provides a general SHE equation of motion, that unifies under one theoretical framework, all contributions of SHE conductivity due to the kinetic, the spin orbit force (Yang-Mills), and the geometric (Murakami-Fujita) effects. Our work puts right an ambigu…
We study the Magnus transport in a gapped 2D electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling using semiclassical Boltzmann transport formalism. Apart from its signature in the charge transport coefficients, the inclusion of Magnus velocity in the spin current operator enables us to study Magnus spin transport in the system. In particular, we study the roles of mass gap and Fermi surface topology on the behavior of Magnus Hall and Nernst conductivities and their spin counterparts. We find that the Magnus spin Hall conductivity vanishes in the limit of zero gap, unlike the universal spin Hall condu…
Interaction induced topological states remain one of the fascinating phases in condensed matter physics. The exciton condensate has recently sparked renewed interest due to the discovery of new candidate materials and its driving force to realize exotic topological states. In this work, we explore the exciton orders induced high-order topology in the bilayer quantum spin Hall insulators and find that the topological excitonic corner states can be realized by tuning the gate and magnetic field. When an in-plane Zeeman field is applied to the system, two or four excitonic boundary-obstructed cor…
At sufficiently low temperatures, many quantum effects, such as weak localization, electron-electron interaction (EEI), and Kondo screening, can lead to pronounced corrections to the semiclassical electron transport. Although low temperature corrections to longitudinal resistivity, ordinary Hall resistivity, or anomalous Hall resistivity are often observed, the corrections to three of them have never been simultaneously detected in a single sample. Here, we report on the observation of $\sqrt T$-type temperature dependences of the longitudinal, ordinary Hall and AH resistivities at temperature…
Recent experiments reporting unexpectedly large spin Hall effect (SHE) in graphene decorated with adatoms have raised a fierce controversy. We apply numerically exact Kubo and Landauer- Buttiker formulas to realistic models of gold-decorated disordered graphene (including adatom clustering) to obtain the spin Hall conductivity and spin Hall angle, as well as the nonlocal resistance as a quantity accessible to experiments. Large spin Hall angles of 0.1 are obtained at zero-temperature, but their dependence on adatom clustering differs from the predictions of semiclassical transport theories. F…
Recent advances in the physics of current-driven antiferromagnetic skyrmions have observed the absence of a Magnus force. We outline the symmetry reasons for this phenomenon, and show that this cancellation will fail in the case of spin polarized currents. Pairing micromagnetic simulations with semiclassical spin wave transport theory, we demonstrate that skyrmions produce a spin-polarized transverse magnon current, and that spin-polarized magnon currents can in turn produce transverse motion of antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We examine qualitative differences in the frequency dependence of the …
We discuss the interplay between transport and intrinsic dissipation in quantum Hall bilayers, within the framework of a simple thought experiment. We compute, for the first time, quantum corrections to the semiclassical dynamics of this system. This allows us to re-interpret tunnelling measurements on these systems. We find a strong peak in the zero-temperature tunnelling current that arises from the decay of Josephson-like oscillations into incoherent charge fluctuations. In the presence of an in-plane field, resonances in the tunnelling current develop an asymmetric lineshape.
We give a perspective on the Hofstadter butterfly (fractal energy spectrum in magnetic fields), which we have shown to arise specifically in three-dimensional(3D) systems in our previous work. (i) We first obtain the `phase diagram' on a parameter space of the transfer energies and the magnetic field for the appearance of Hofstadter's butterfly spectrum in anisotropic crystals in 3D. (ii) We show that the orientation of the external magnetic field can be arbitrary to have the 3D butterfly. (iii) We show that the butterfly is beyond the semiclassical description. (iv) The required magnetic fiel…
Spin-Hall effect in ballistic 2D electron gas with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling and smooth edge confinement is studied. We predict that the interplay of semiclassical electron motion and quantum dynamics of spins leads to several distinct features in spin density along the edge that originate from accumulation of turning points from many classical trajectories. Strong peak is found near a point of the vanishing of electron Fermi velocity in the lower spin-split subband. It is followed by a strip of negative spin density that extends until the crossing of the local Fermi energy with the dege…
The spin polarized charge transport is systematically analyzed as a thermally driven stochastic process. The approach is based on Kramers' equation describing the semiclassical motion under the inclusion of stochastic and damping forces. Due to the relativistic spin-orbit coupling the damping experiences a relativistic correction leading to an additional contribution within the spin Hall conductivity. A further contribution to the conductivity is originated from the averaged underlying crystal potential, the mean value of which depends significantly on the electric field. We derive an exact ex…
We show that correlated two-particle backscattering can induce fractional charge oscillations in a quantum dot built at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator by means of magnetic barriers. The result nicely complements recent works where the fractional oscillations were obtained employing of semiclassical treatments. Moreover, since by rotating the magnetization of the barriers a fractional charge can be trapped in the dot via the Jackiw-Rebbi mechanism, the system we analyze offers the opportunity to study the interplay between this noninteracting charge fractionalization and th…
The classical drift motion of electrons in crossed electric and magnetic fields provides an interesting example of a system with an on average constant velocity -- despite the presence of an electric field. This drift-velocity depends solely on the ratio of the electric and magnetic fields and not on the initial momentum of the electron. The present work describes the quantum-mechanical version of this drift-motion, which differs drastically from the classical result: The drift becomes dependent on the energy and a quantization of the transport occurs. The results bear implications for the the…
We theoretically investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) and planar Hall effect (PHE) in Weyl semimetals based on the semiclassical Boltzmann theory, focusing on the fine structure of the band dispersion. We identified that the negative longitudinal MR and sign change in the PHE occur because of the negative off-diagonal effective-mass with no topological effects or chiral anomaly physics. Our results highlight the crucial role of the off-diagonal effective-mass, which can cause anomalous galvanomagnetic effects. We propose that the PHE creates a dip in their temperature dependence, which enab…
The third-order nonlinear Hall effect induced by Berry-connection polarizability tensor has been observed in Weyl semimetals T$_d$-MoTe$_2$ as well as T$_d$-TaIrTe$_4$. The experiments were performed on bulk samples, and the results were interpreted with the semiclassical Boltzmann approach. Beyond the bulk limit, we develop a quantum nonlinear transport theory to investigate the third-order Hall response of a four-terminal setup with time-reversal symmetry in quantum regime. The quantum nonlinear theory is verified on a model system of monolayer MoTe$_2$, and numerical results on the angle-re…
We consider Coulomb drag between two layers of two-dimensional electron gases subject to a strong magnetic field, with the Landau level filling factor in each layer being 1/2. We find $ρ_D$ to be very large, as compared to the zero magnetic field case. We attribute this enhancement to the slow decay of density fluctuations in a strong magnetic field. For a clean system, the linear $q$-dependence of the longitudinal conductivity, characteristic of the $ν=1/2$ state, leads a unique temperature dependence---$\rd \propto T^{4/3}$. Within a semiclassical approximation, disorder leads to a decrease …
