Spin-Hall effect in ballistic 2D electron gas with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling and smooth edge confinement is studied. We predict that the interplay of semiclassical electron motion and quantum dynamics of spins leads to several distinct features in spin density along the edge that originate from accumulation of turning points from many classical trajectories. Strong peak is found near a point of the vanishing of electron Fermi velocity in the lower spin-split subband. It is followed by a strip of negative spin density that extends until the crossing of the local Fermi energy with the degeneracy point where the two spin subbands intersect. Beyond this crossing there is a wide region of a smooth positive spin density. The total amount of spin accumulated in each of these features exceeds greatly the net spin across the entire edge. The features become more pronounced for shallower boundary potentials, controlled by gating in typical experimental setups.
Edge states of the quantum Hall fluid provide an opportunity to study mesoscopic effects in a highly correlated electron system that is both experimentally accessible and theoretically tractable. In this paper we review recent work on the persistent current and Aharonov-Bohm magnetoconductance oscillations in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime.
A Hall effect due to spin chirality in mesoscopic systems is predicted. We consider a 4-terminal Hall system including local spins with geometry of a vortex domain wall, where strong spin chirality appears near the center of vortex. The Fermi energy of the conduction electrons is assumed to be comparable to the exchange coupling energy where the adiabatic approximation ceases to be valid. Our results show a Hall effect where a voltage drop and a spin current arise in the transverse direction. The similarity between this Hall effect and the conventional spin Hall effect in systems with spin-orb…
We study theoretically the spin-Hall effect as well as its reciprocal phenomenon (a transverse charge current driven by a spin-dependent chemical potential gradient) in electron and hole finite size mesoscopic systems. The Landauer-Buttiker-Keldysh formalism is used to model samples with mobilities and Rashba coupling strengths which are experimentally accessible and to demonstrate the appearance of measurable charge currents induced by the spin-dependent chemical potential gradient in the reciprocal spin-Hall effect. We also demonstrate that within the mesoscopic coherent transport regime the…
We study mesoscopic spin Hall effect on the surface of topological insulator with a step-function potential. The giant spin polarization induced by a transverse electric current is derived analytically by using McMillan method in the ballistic transport limit, which oscillates across the potential boundary with no confinement from the potential barrier due to the Klein paradox, and should be observable in spin resolved scanning tunneling microscope.
We study the four-terminal resistance fluctuations of mesoscopic samples near the transition between the $ν=2$ and the $ν=1$ quantum Hall states. We observe near-perfect correlations between the fluctuations of the longitudinal and Hall components of the resistance. These correlated fluctuations appear in a magnetic-field range for which the two-terminal resistance of the samples is quantized. We discuss these findings in light of edge-state transport models of the quantum Hall effect. We also show that our results lead to an ambiguity in the determination of the width of quantum Hall transiti…
The energy efficiency of the spin Hall effects (SHE) can be enhanced if the electrical conductivity is decreased without sacrificing the spin Hall conductivity. The resistivity of Pt films can be increased to 150-300 μΩ*cm by mesoscopic lateral confinement, thereby decreasing the conductivity. The SHE and inverse spin Hall effects (ISHE) in these mesoscopic Pt films are explored at 10 K by using the nonlocal spin injection/detection method. All relevant physical quantities are determined in-situ on the same substrate, and a quantitative approach is developed to characterize all processes effec…
We study theoretically the manifestation of the spin-Hall effect in a two-dimensional electronic system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling via dc-transport measurements in realistic mesoscopic H-shape structures. The Landauer-Buttiker formalism is used to model samples with mobilities and Rashba coupling strengths of current experiments and to demonstrate the appearance of a measurable Rashba-coupling dependent voltage. This type of measurement requires only metal contacts, i.e., no magnetic elements are present. We also confirm the robustness of the intrinsic spin-Hall effect against disorder in…
The symmetry properties of the resistance of mesoscopic samples in the quantum Hall regime are investigated. In addition to the reciprocity relation, our samples obey new symmetries, that relate resistances measured with different contact configurations. Different kinds of symmetries are identified, depending on whether the magnetic field value is such that the system is above, or below, a quantum Hall transition. Related symmetries have recently been reported for macroscopic samples in the quantum Hall regime by Ponomarenko {\it et al.} (Solid State Commun. {\bf 130}, 705 (2004)), and Karmaka…
A nonlinear single-particle model is introduced, which captures the characteristic of systems in the quantum Hall regime. The model entails the magnetic Shrödinger equation with spatially variable magnetic flux density. The distribution of flux is prescribed via the postulates of the mesoscopic mechanics (MeM) introduced in my previous articles [cf. J. Phys. Chem. Solids, 65 (2004), 1507-1515; J. Geom. Phys., Vol. 55/1 (2005), 1-18]. The model is found to imply exact integer and fractional quantization of the Hall conductance. In fact, Hall resistance is found to be $R_H = \frac{h}{2e^2}\frac{…
We perform first principles numerical simulations to investigate resistance fluctuations in mesoscopic samples, near the transition between consecutive Quantum Hall plateaus. We use six-terminal geometry and sample sizes similar to those of real devices. The Hall and longitudinal resistances extracted from the generalized Landauer formula reproduce all the experimental features uncovered recently. We then use a simple generalization of the Landauer-Büttiker model, based on the interplay between tunneling and chiral currents -- the co-existing mechanisms for transport -- to explain the three di…
We report results of a study of (integer) quantum Hall transitions in a single or multiple Landau levels for non-interacting electrons in disordered two-dimensional systems, obtained by projecting a tight-binding Hamiltonian to corresponding magnetic subbands. In finite-size systems, we find that mesoscopic effects often dominate, leading to apparent non-universal scaling behaviour in higher Landau levels. This is because localization length, which grows exponentially with Landau level index, exceeds the system sizes amenable to numerical study at present. When band mixing between multiple Lan…
We propose an all-electrical nanoscopic structure where {\em pure} spin current is induced in the transverse voltage probes attached to {\em quantum-coherent} one-dimensional ring when conventional unpolarized charge current is injected through its longitudinal leads. Tuning of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in semiconductor heterostructure hosting the ring generates quasi-periodic oscillations of the predicted spin Hall current due to {\em spin-sensitive quantum-interference effects} caused by the difference in Aharonov-Casher phase acquired by opposite spins states traveling clockwise and co…
We have studied experimentally the low temperature conductivity of mesoscopic size InAs/GaSb quantum well Hall bar devices in the inverted regime. Using a pair of electrostatic gates we were able to move the Fermi level into the electron-hole hybridization state, and observe a mini gap. Temperature dependence of the conductivity in the gap shows residual conductivity, which can be consistently explained by the contributions from the free as well as the hybridized carriers in the presence of impurity scattering, as proposed by Naveh and Laikhtman [Euro. Phys. Lett., 55, 545-551 (2001)]. Experim…
Spin accumulation generated by the anomalous Hall effects (AHE) in mesoscopic ferromagnetic Ni81Fe19 (permalloy or Py) films is detected electrically by a nonlocal method. The reciprocal phenomenon, inverse spin Hall effects (ISHE), can also be generated and detected all-electrically in the same structure. For accurate quantitative analysis, a series of nonlocal AHE/ISHE structures and supplementary structures are fabricated on each sample substrate to account for statistical variations and to accurately determine all essential physical parameters in-situ. By exploring Py thicknesses of 4 nm, …
Injection of unpolarized charge current through the longitudinal leads of a four-terminal two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling and/or SO scattering off extrinsic impurities is responsible not only for the pure spin Hall current in the transverse leads, but also for random time-dependent current fluctuations. We employ the scattering approach to current-current correlations in multiterminal nanoscale conductors to analyze the shot noise of transverse pure spin Hall and zero charge current, or transverse spin current and non-zero charge Hall current, driven by un…
We present the results of million atom electronic quantum transport calculations for graphene nanoconstrictions with edges that are smooth apart from atomic scale steps. We find conductances quantized in integer multiples of 2e2/h and a plateau at ~0.5*2e2/h as in recent experiments [Tombros et al., Nature Physics 7, 697 (2011)]. We demonstrate that, surprisingly, conductances quantized in integer multiples of 2e2/h occur even for strongly non-adiabatic electron backscattering at the stepped edges that lowers the conductance by one or more conductance quanta below the adiabatic value. We also …
We show that the one-way channel formalism of quantum optics has a physical realisation in electronic systems. In particular, we show that magnetic edge states form unidirectional quantum channels capable of coherently transporting electronic quantum information. Using the equivalence between one-way photonic channels and magnetic edge states, we adapt a proposal for quantum state transfer to mesoscopic systems using edge states as a quantum channel, and show that it is feasible with reasonable experimental parameters. We discuss how this protocol may be used to transfer information encoded in…
A thin superconducting disk, with radius $R=4ξ$ and height $H=ξ$, is studied in the presence of an applied magnetic field parallel to its major axis. We study how the boundaries influence the decay of the order parameter near the edges for three-dimensional vortex states.
The transport properties of a rectangular mesoscopic plaquette in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field are studied in a tight-binding model with randomly distributed traps. The longitudinal and Hall resistances are calculted in the four-probe Landauer-Büttiker formalism which accounts automatically both for the quantum coherence and the trapping-induced localization. The localized character of eigenvectors and the specific aspect of the density of states at a given magnetic flux are correlated with the behaviour of the mentioned resistances as function of the Fermi energy. The Hall i…
We investigate the origin of the resistance fluctuations of mesoscopic samples, near transitions between Quantum Hall plateaus. These fluctuations have been recently observed experimentally by E. Peled et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 246802 (2003); ibid 90, 236802 (2003); Phys. Rev. B 69, R241305 (2004)]. We perform realistic first-principles simulations using a six-terminal geometry and sample sizes similar to those of real devices, to model the actual experiment. We present the theory and implementation of these simulations, which are based on the linear response theory for non-interacting elec…
Sharp localization transitions of chiral edge states in disordered quantum wires, subject to strong magnetic field, are shown to be driven by crossovers from two- to one-dimensional localization of bulk states. As a result, the two-terminal conductance is found to exhibit at zero temperature discontinuous transitions between {\it exactly} integer plateau values and zero, reminiscent of first order phase transitions. We discuss the corresponding phase diagram. The spin of the electrons is shown to result in a multitude of phases, when the spin degeneracy is lifted by the Zeeman energy. The widt…
We report the observation of negative nonlocal resistances in multiterminal mesoscopic gold Hall bar structures whose characteristic dimensions are larger than the electron mean-free path. Our results can only be partially explained by a classical diffusive model of the nonlocal transport, and are not consistent with a recently proposed model based on spin Hall effects. Instead, our analysis suggests that a quasiballistic transport mechanism is responsible for the observed negative nonlocal resistance. Based on the sensitivity of our measurements and the spin Hall effect model, we find an uppe…
We study the effect of an electric charge in the middle of a ring of electrons in a magnetic field such as $ν= 1/2$. In the absence of the central charge, a residual current should appear due to an Aharanov-Bohm effect. As the charge varies, periodic currents should appear in the ring. We evaluate the amplitude of these currents, as well as their period as the central charge varies. The presence of these currents should be a direct signature of the existence of a statistical gauge field in the $ν=1/2$ quantum Hall effect. Numerical diagonalizations for a small number of electrons on the sphere…
We investigate the spin Hall effect in ballistic chaotic quantum dots with spin-orbit coupling. We show that a longitudinal charge current can generate a pure transverse spin current. While this transverse spin current is generically nonzero for a fixed sample, we show that when the spin-orbit coupling time is large compared to the mean dwell time inside the dot, it fluctuates universally from sample to sample or upon variation of the chemical potential with a vanishing average. For a fixed sample configuration, the transverse spin current has a finite typical value ~e^2 V/h, proportional to t…

In this work we use electrostatic control of quantum Hall ferromagnetic transitions in CdMnTe quantum wells to study electron transport through individual domain walls (DWs) induced at a specific location. These DWs are formed due to hybridization of two counter-propagating edge states with opposite spin polarization. Conduction through DWs is found to be symmetric under magnetic field direction reversal, consistent with the helical nature of these DWs. We observe that long domain walls are in the insulating regime with localization length 4 - 6~$μ$m. In shorter DWs the resistance saturates to…
We consider the absorption of microwaves by a quantum Hall droplet. We show that the number and velocities of charged edge modes can be directly measured from a droplet of known shape. In contrast to standard transport measurements, different edge equilibration regimes can be accessed in the same device. If there is a quantum point contact in the droplet, then quasiparticle properties, including braiding statistics, can be observed. Their effects are manifested as modulations of the microwave absorption spectrum that are, notably, first-order in the tunneling amplitude at the point contact.
We present an experimental study of mesoscopic, two-dimensional electronic systems at high magnetic fields. Our samples, prepared from a low-mobility InGaAs/InAlAs wafer, exhibit reproducible, sample specific, resistance fluctuations. Focusing on the lowest Landau level we find that, while the diagonal resistivity displays strong fluctuations, the Hall resistivity is free of fluctuations and remains quantized at its $ν=1$ value, $h/e^{2}$. This is true also in the insulating phase that terminates the quantum Hall series. These results extend the validity of the semicircle law of conductivity i…
We use the Kubo-Landauer formalism to compute the longitudinal (two-terminal) conductance of a two dimensional electron system placed in a strong perpendicular magnetic field, and subjected to periodic modulations and/or disorder potentials. The scattering problem is recast as a set of inhomogeneous, coupled linear equations, allowing us to find the transmission probabilities from a finite-size system computation; the results are exact for non-interacting electrons. Our method fully accounts for the effects of the disorder and the periodic modulation, irrespective of their relative strength, a…
When a mesoscopic two dimensional four-terminal Hall cross-bar with Rashba and/or Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is subjected to a perpendicular uniform magnetic field $B$, both integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) and mesoscopic spin-Hall effect (MSHE) may exist when disorder strength $W$ in the sample is weak. We have calculated the low field "phase diagram" of MSHE in the $(B,W)$ plane for disordered samples in the IQHE regime. For weak disorder, MSHE conductance $G_{sH}$ and its fluctuations $rms(G_{SH})$ vanish identically on even numbered IQHE plateaus, they have finite values on…
We show that pure spin Hall current, flowing out of a four-terminal phase-coherent two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) within inversion asymmetric semiconductor heterostructure, contains contributions from both the extrinsic mechanisms (spin-orbit dependent scattering off impurities) and the intrinsic ones (due to the Rashba coupling). While the extrinsic contribution vanishes in the weakly and strongly disordered limits, and the intrinsic one dominates in the quasiballistic limit, in the crossover transport regime the spin Hall conductance, exhibiting sample-to-sample large fluctuations and s…
We numerically investigate the interplay of disorder and electron-electron interactions in the integer quantum Hall effect. In particular, we focus on the behaviour of the electronic compressibility as a function of magnetic field and electron density. We find manifestations of non-linear screening and charging effects around integer filling factors, consistent with recent imaging experiments. Our calculations exhibit $g$-factor enhancement as well as strong overscreening in the centre of the Landau bands. Even though the critical behaviour appears mostly unaffected by interactions, important …
We study numerically conductance fluctuations near the integer quantum Hall effect plateau transition. The system is presumed to be in a mesoscopic regime, with phase coherence length comparable to the system size. We focus on a two-terminal conductance G for square samples, considering both periodic and open boundary conditions transverse to the current. At the plateau transition, G is broadly distributed, with a distribution function close to uniform on the interval between zero and one in units of e^2/h. Our results are consistent with a recent experiment by Cobden and Kogan on a mesoscopic…
The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect has been demonstrated in two-dimensional topological insulator systems incorporated with ferromagnetism. However, a comprehensive understanding of mesoscopic transport in sub-micron QAH devices has yet been established. Here we fabricated miniaturized QAH devices with channel widths down to 600 nm, where the QAH features are still preserved. A back-scattering channel is formed in narrow QAH devices through percolative hopping between 2D compressible puddles. Large resistance fluctuations are observed in narrow devices near the coercive field, which is as…
We report on resistivity and Hall measurements performed on a series of narrow mesa devices fabricated from LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 single interface heterostructure with a bridge width range of 1.5-10 microns. Upon applying back-gate voltage of the order of a few Volts, a strong increase in the sample resistance (up to factor of 35) is observed, suggesting a relatively large capacitance between the Hall-bar and the gate. The high value of this capacitance is due to the device geometry, and can be explained within an electrostatic model using the Thomas Fermi approximation. The Hall coefficient is some…
We study the spin-Hall conductance fluctuations in ballistic mesoscopic systems. We obtain universal expressions for the spin and charge current fluctuations, cast in terms of current-current autocorrelation functions. We show that the latter are conveniently parametrized as deformed Lorentzian shape lines, functions of an external applied magnetic field and the Fermi energy. We find that the charge current fluctuations show quite unique statistical features at the symplectic-unitary crossover regime. Our findings are based on an evaluation of the generalized transmission coefficients correlat…
We consider the bilocal conductivity tensor, the two-probe conductance and its fluctuations for a disordered phase-coherent two-dimensional system of non-interacting electrons in the presence of a magnetic field, including correctly the edge effects. Analytical results are obtained by perturbation theory in the limit $σ_{xx} \gg 1$. For mesoscopic systems the conduction process is dominated by diffusion but we show that, due to the lack of time-reversal symmetry, the boundary condition for diffusion is altered at the reflecting edges. Instead of the usual condition, that the derivative along t…
We introduce the concept of bond spin current, which describes the spin transport between two sites of the lattice model of a multiterminal spin-orbit (SO) coupled semiconductor nanostructure, and express it in terms of the spin-dependent nonequilibrium (Landauer-Keldysh) Green functions of the device. This formalism is applied to obtain the spatial distribution of microscopic spin currents in {\em clean} phase-coherent two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba-type of SO coupling attached to four external leads. Together with the corresponding profiles of the stationary spin density, such …
We propose a general and compact scheme for the computation of the periods and amplitudes of the chiral persistent currents, magnetizations and magnetic susceptibilities in mesoscopic fractional quantum Hall disk samples threaded by Aharonov--Bohm magnetic field. This universal approach uses the effective conformal field theory for the edge states in the quantum Hall effect to derive explicit formulas for the corresponding partition functions in presence of flux. We point out the crucial role of a special invariance condition for the partition function, following from the Bloch-Byers-Yang theo…
We predict that unpolarized charge current driven through the longitudinal leads attached to ballistic quantum-coherent two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in semiconductor heterostructure will induce a {\em pure} spin current, which is not accompanied by any net charge flow, in the transverse voltage probes. Its magnitude can be tuned by the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction and, moreover, it is resilient to weak spin-independent scattering off impurities within the metallic diffusive regime. While the polarization vector of the spin transported through the transverse leads is not orthogonal…
We consider a straight one-dimensional potential step created across a graphene flake. Charge and spin transport through such a potential step are studied in the presence of both intrinsic and extrinsic (Rashba) spin-orbit coupling (SOC). At normal incidence electrons are completely reflected when the Rashba interaction (with strength $λ_R$) is dominant whereas they are perfectly transmitted if the two types of SOC are exactly balanced. At normal incidence, the transmission probability of the step is thus controlled continuously from 0 to 1 by tuning the ratio of the two types of SOC. Besides …
The topological Hall effect (THE), induced by the Berry curvature, which originates from non-zero scalar spin chirality, is an important feature for mesoscopic topological structures, such as skyrmions. However, the THE might also arise from other microscopic non-coplanar spin structures in the lattice. Thus, the origin of the THE inevitably needs to be determined to fully understand skyrmions and find new host materials. Here, we examine the Hall effect in both bulk- and micron-sized lamellar samples of MnBi. The sample size affects the temperature and field range in which the THE is detectab…
Weyl semimetals are emerging to become a new class of quantum-material platform for various novel phenomena. Especially, the Weyl orbit made from surface Fermi arcs and bulk relativistic states is expected to play a key role in magnetotransport, leading even to a three-dimensional quantum Hall effect (QHE). It is experimentally and theoretically important although yet unclear whether it bears essentially the same phenomenon as the conventional two-dimensional QHE. We discover an unconventional fully three-dimensional anisotropy in the quantum transport under magnetic field. Strong suppression …
The spin Hall effect in two dimensional hole systems is studied by using the four-terminal Landauer-Büttiker formula with the help of Green functions. The spin Hall effect exists even when there are {\em not} any correlations between the spin-up and -down heavy holes (light holes) and when the $Γ$-point degeneracy of the heavy hole and light hole bands is lifted by the confinement or recovered by the strain. When only a heavy hole charge current without any spin polarization is injected through one lead, under right choice of lead voltages, one can get a pure heavy (light) hole spin current, c…
We study the electronic properties of the confined honeycomb lattice in the presence of the intrinsic spin-orbit (ISO) interaction and perpendicular magnetic field, and report on uncommon aspects of the quantum spin Hall conductance corroborated by peculiar properties of the edge states. The ISO interaction induces two specific gaps in the Hofstadter spectrum, namely the 'weak' topological gap defined by Beugeling et al [Phys. Rev. B 86, 075118 (2012)], and spin-imbalanced gaps in the relativistic range of the energy spectrum. We analyze the evolution of the helical states with the magnetic fi…
The reason why the half-integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) is suppressed in graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is unclear. We propose that it might be connected to extended defects in the material and present results for the quantum Hall effect in graphene with [0001] tilt grain boundaries connecting opposite sides of Hall bar devices. Such grain boundaries contain 5-7 ring complexes that host defect states that hybridize to form bands with varying degree of metallicity depending on grain boundary defect density. In a magnetic field, edge states on opposite sides of the Hall bar …
We investigate spin-dependent transport in three--terminal mesoscopic cavities with spin--orbit coupling. Focusing on the inverse spin Hall effect, we show how injecting a pure spin current or a polarized current from one terminal generates additional charge current and/or voltage across the two output terminals. This allows to extract the spin conductance of the cavity from two purely electrical measurements on the output. We use random matrix theory to show that the spin conductance of chaotic ballistic cavities fluctuates universally about zero mesoscopic average and describe experimental i…
Electric field effect devices based on mesoscopic graphite are fabricated for galvanomagnetic measurements. Strong modulation of magneto-resistance and Hall resistance as a function of gate voltage is observed as sample thickness approaches the screening length. Electric field dependent Landau level formation is detected from Shubnikov de Haas oscillations in magneto-resistance. The effective mass of electron and hole carriers has been measured from the temperature dependant behavior of these oscillations.
We revisit the problem of electron transport through mesoscopic rings with spin-orbit (SO) interaction. In the well-known path-integral approach, the scattering states for a quasi-1D ring with quasi-1D leads can be expressed in terms of spinless electrons subject to a fictitious magnetic flux. We show that spin-dependent quantum-interference effects in small rings are strongest for spatially inhomogeneous SO interactions, in which case spin currents can be controlled by a small external magnetic field. Mesoscopic spin Hall effects in four-terminal rings can also be understood in terms of the f…
We propose a scheme for dynamically creating orbitally entangled electron-hole pairs through a time-dependent variation of the electrical potential in a mesoscopic conductor. The time-dependent potential generates a superposition of electron-hole pairs in two different orbital regions of the conductor, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the quantum Hall regime. The orbital entanglement is detected via violation of a Bell inequality, formulated in terms of zero-frequency current noise. Adiabatic cycling of the potential, both in the weak and strong amplitude limit, is considered.
It is shown that the statements about the observation of the transitions between the insulating phase and the integer quantum Hall effect phases with the quantized Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}^{q}$ $\geq 3e^{2}/h$ made in a number of works are unjustified. In these works, the crossing points of the magnetic field dependences of the diagonal resistivity at different temperatures at $ω_{c}τ\approx 1$ have been misidentified as the critical points of the phase transitions. In fact, these crossing points are due to the sign change of the derivative $dρ_{xx}/dT$ owing to the quantum corrections to the…
We investigate the Nernst effect in a mesoscopic two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at low magnetic fields, before the onset of Landau level quantization. The overall magnitude of the Nernst signal agrees well with semi-classical predictions. We observe reproducible mesoscopic fluctuations in the signal which diminish significantly with an increase in temperature. We also show that the Nernst effect exhibits an anomalous component which is correlated with an oscillatory Hall effect. This behavior may be able to distinguish between different spin-correlated states in the 2DES.
We use numerical simulations to predict peculiar magnetotransport fingerprints in polycrystalline graphene, driven by the presence of grain boundaries of varying size and orientation. The formation of Landau levels is shown to be restricted by the polycrystalline morphology, requiring the magnetic length to be smaller than the average grain radius. The nature of localization is also found to be unusual, with strongly localized states at the center of Landau levels (including the usually highly robust zero-energy state) and extended electronic states lying between Landau levels. These extended …
We study the quantum interference effects induced by the Aharonov-Casher phase in asymmetrically confined two-dimensional electron and heavy-hole ring structures systems taking into account the electrically tunable spin-orbit (SO) interaction. We have calculated the non-adiabatic transport properties of charges (heavy-holes and electrons) in two-probe thin ring structures and compare how the form of the SO coupling of the carries affects it. We show that both the SO splitting of the bands and the carrier density can be used to modulate the conductance through the ring. We show that the depende…
Recently, new strongly interacting phases have been uncovered in mesoscopic systems with chaotic scattering at the boundaries by two of the present authors and R. Shankar. This analysis is reliable when the dimensionless conductance of the system is large, and is nonperturbative in both disorder and interactions. The new phases are the mesoscopic analogue of spontaneous distortions of the Fermi surface induced by interactions in bulk systems and can occur in any Fermi liquid channel with angular momentum $m$. Here we show that the phase with $m$ even has a diamagnetic persistent current (seen …
We investigate the 1/f noise properties of epitaxial graphene devices at low temperatures as a function of temperature, current and magnetic flux density. At low currents, an exponential decay of the 1/f noise power spectral density with increasing temperature is observed that indicates mesoscopic conductance fluctuations as the origin of 1/f noise at temperatures below 50 K. At higher currents, deviations from the typical quadratic current dependence and the exponential temperature dependence occur as a result of nonequilibrium conditions due to current heating. By applying the theory of Kuba…
We study theoretically dynamic response of a mesoscopic capacitor, which consists of a quantum dot connected to an electron reservoir via a point contact and capacitively coupled to a gate voltage. A quantum Hall edge state with a filling factor nu is realized in a strong magnetic field applied perpendicular to the two-dimensional electron gas. We discuss a noise-driven quantum phase transition of the transport property of the edge state by taking into account an ohmic bath connected to the gate voltage. Without the noise, the charge relaxation for nu>1/2 is universally quantized at R_q=h/(2e^…
