We study nonlinear response of a quantum Hall system in semiconductor-heterostructures via third harmonic generation process and nonlinear Faraday effect. We demonstrate that Faraday rotation angle and third harmonic radiation intensity have a characteristic Hall plateaus feature. These nonlinear effects remain robust against the significant broadening of Landau levels. We predict realization of an experiment through the observation of the third harmonic signal and Faraday rotation angle, which are within the experimental feasibility.
We consider the effect of microwave radiation on the Hall resistivity in two-dimension electron systems. It is shown that the photon-assisted impurity scattering of electrons can result in oscillatory dependences of both dissipative and Hall components of the conductivity and resistivity tensors on the ratio of radiation frequency to cyclotron frequency. The Hall resistivity can include a component induced by microwave radiation which is an even function of the magnetic field. The phase of the dissipative resistivity oscillations and the polarization dependence of their amplitude are compared …
The electromagnetic characteristics of bilayer quantum Hall systems in the presence of interlayer coherence and tunneling are studied by means of a pseudospin-texture effective theory and an algebraic framework of the single-mode approximation, with emphasis on clarifying the nature of the low-lying neutral collective mode responsible for interlayer tunneling phenomena. A long-wavelength effective theory, consisting of the collective mode as well as the cyclotron modes, is constructed. It is seen explicitly from the electromagnetic response that gauge invariance is kept exact, this implying, i…
We report on an effective gauge theory of double-layer quantum Hall systems, that is constructed via bosonization from the response of incompressible states without referring to composite bosons and fermions. It is pointed out that dipole-active excitations, both elementary and collective, govern the long-wavelength features of quantum Hall systems, and the single-mode approximation is used to study them. The effective theory consists of three vector fields representing one interlayer collective mode and two cyclotron modes, and properly incorporates the spectrum of collective excitations on t…
We examine the radiation induced modification of the Hall effect in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs devices that exhibit vanishing resistance under microwave excitation. The modification in the Hall effect upon irradiation is characterized by (a) a small reduction in the slope of the Hall resistance curve with respect to the dark value, (b) a periodic reduction in the magnitude of the Hall resistance, $R_{xy}$, that correlates with an increase in the diagonal resistance, $R_{xx}$, and (c) a Hall resistance correction that disappears as the diagonal resistance vanishes.
The electromagnetic characteristics of double-layer quantum Hall systems are studied, with projection to the lowest Landau level taken into account and intra-Landau-level collective excitations treated in the single-mode approximation. It is pointed out that dipole-active excitations, both elementary and collective, govern the long-wavelength features of quantum Hall systems. In particular, the presence of the dipole-active interlayer out-of-phase collective excitations, inherent to double-layer systems, modifies the leading O(k) and O(k^{2}) long-wavelength characteristics (i.e., the transpor…
We show that, for Galilean invariant quantum Hall states, the Hall viscosity appears in the electromagnetic response at finite wave numbers q. In particular, the leading q dependence of the Hall conductivity at small q receives a contribution from the Hall viscosity. The coefficient of the q^2 term in the Hall conductivity is universal in the limit of strong magnetic field.
We report on the observation of the circular transversal terahertz photoconductivity in monolayer graphene supplied by a back gate. The photoconductivity response is caused by the free carrier absorption and reverses its sign upon switching the radiation helicity. The observed dc Hall effect manifests the time inversion symmetry breaking induced by circularly polarized terahertz radiation in the absence of a magnetic field. For low gate voltages, the photosignal is found to be proportional to the radiation intensity and can be ascribed to the alignment of electron momenta by the combined actio…
At a surface between electromagnetic media the Maxwell equations are consistent with either the usual boundary conditions, or exactly one alternative: continuity of E(perpendicular), H(perpendicular), D(parallel), B(parallel). These alternative, classically inexplicable conditions applied to the top and bottom surfaces of an FQH layer capture exactly its unique low-frequency properties.
Using a $W_{N}$-gauge theory to describe electromagnetic interactions of spinless fermions in the lowest Landau level, where the $W_{N}$ transformations are nonlinear realizations of U(1) gauge transformations, we construct the effective action describing electromagnetic interactions of a higher dimensional quantum Hall droplet. We also discuss how this is related to the Abelian Seiberg-Witten map. Explicit calculations are presented for the quantum Hall effect on ${\bf CP}^k$ with U(1) background magnetic field. The bulk action is a Kähler-Chern-Simons term whose anomaly is cancelled by a bou…
We study the quantum fluctuations of the two quadratures of the emitted electromagnetic radiation generated by a quantum Hall device in a quantum point contact geometry. In particular, we focus our attention on the role played by the unavoidable electron-electron interactions between the two edge channels at filling factor two. We investigate quantum features of the emitted microwave radiation, such as squeezing, by studying the current fluctuations at finite frequency, accessible through a two-filters set-up placed just after the quantum point contact. We compare two different drives, respect…
We study nonlinear optical response of Landau quantized graphene to an intense electromagnetic wave. In particular, we consider high harmonic generation process. It is shown that one can achieve efficient generation of high harmonics with strong radiation fields -- when the work of the wave electric field on the magnetic length is larger than pump photon energy. At that high harmonics generation process takes place for a wide range of the pump wave frequencies and intensities even for significant broadening of Landau levels because of impurities in graphene.
The classical drift motion of electrons in crossed electric and magnetic fields provides an interesting example of a system with an on average constant velocity -- despite the presence of an electric field. This drift-velocity depends solely on the ratio of the electric and magnetic fields and not on the initial momentum of the electron. The present work describes the quantum-mechanical version of this drift-motion, which differs drastically from the classical result: The drift becomes dependent on the energy and a quantization of the transport occurs. The results bear implications for the the…
We derive an analytic expression for the geometric Hall viscosity of non-interacting electrons in a single graphene layer in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We show that a recently-derived formula in [C. Hoyos and D. T. Son, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 066805 (2012)], which connects the coefficient of $q^2$ in the wave vector expansion of the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(q)$ of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) to the Hall viscosity and the orbital diamagnetic susceptibility of that system, continues to hold for graphene -- in spite of the lack of Galilean invariance -- with…
The microscopic quantum theory of nonlinear stimulated scattering of chiral particles in doped $AB$ stacked bilayer graphene on Coulomb field of charged impurities in the presence of strong coherent electromagnetic radiation is presented. The Liouville-von Neumann equation for the density matrix is solved analytically. Here the interaction of electrons with the scattering potential is taken into account as a perturbation. The absorption rate of nonlinear inverse-bremsstrahlung for a grand canonical ensemble of fermionic chiral particles is calculated using the obtained solution. The analysis o…
We present the fundamental model of a topological electromagnetic phase of matter: viscous Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. Our model applies to a quantum Hall fluids with viscosity. We solve both continuum and lattice regularized systems to demonstrate that this is the minimal (exactly solvable) gauge theory with a nontrivial photonic Chern number ($C\neq 0$) for electromagnetic waves coupled to a quantum Hall fluid. The interplay of symmetry and topology is also captured by the spin-1 representations of a photonic skyrmion at high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. To rigorously analyze the …
The $ν=1$ quantum Hall ground state in samples like GaAs is well known to be ferromagnetic. The global SU(2) spin symmetry of the microscopic action is broken down to a U(1) symmetry by the ground state. The Goldstone bosons corresponding to this spontaneous breaking of symmetry are the ferromagnetic magnons which are neutral spin waves. In addition, there are topologically nontrivial, electrically charged spin excitations known as spin skyrmions, which in these samples are the favoured charge carriers. In this letter, we look into the electromagnetic coupling of these spin excitations. The di…
In a quantum Hall system, the finite-wavevector Hall conductivity displays an intriguing dependence on the Hall viscosity, a coefficient that describes the non-dissipative response of the fluid to a velocity gradient. In this paper, we pursue this connection in detail for quantum Hall systems on a lattice, noting that the neat continuum relation breaks down and develops corrections due to the broken rotational symmetry. In the process, we introduce a new, quantum mechanical derivation of the finite-wavevector Hall conductivity for the integer quantum Hall effect, which allows terms to arbitrar…
We theoretically study the electromagnetic wave radiation of magnons driven by acoustic phonons in systems with strong magnon-phonon interaction. We evaluate the field dependence of radiation intensity spectra which exhibits the avoided crossing, a characteristic of strongly coupled systems. At the crossover where the magnon and phonon eigenstates are hybridized, we demonstrate the existence of two resonant radiation frequencies with circular polarization and the enhancement of antenna radiation efficiency by over 100 times. Our results open up possibilities of developing ultra-compact antenna…
The electromagnetic radiation of electrons in the corrugated graphene in the presence of the transport electric current in the ballistic regime is studied. Radiation of the similar nature can be observed in undulator and wiggler. We considered here an impact of the ripples in the monolayer graphene on its electromagnetic properties. The electromagnetic radiation was actually calculated with a use of the standard electromagnetic theory. Two cases, of regular and random structures are analyzed. Nonlinear relation between the random height function h(x,y) and the gauge field is shown to create th…
We study the rate of quantum phase slips in an ultranarrow superconducting nanowire exposed to weak electromagnetic radiations. The superconductor is in the dirty limit close to the superconducting-insulating transition, where fluxoids move in strong dissipation. We use a semiclassical approach and show that external radiation stimulates a significant enhancement in the probability of quantum phase slips. This can help to outline a new type of detector for microwave to submillimetre radiations based on stimulated quantum phase slip phenomenon.
The noncommutativity of a four-dimensional phase space is introduced from a purely symplectic point of view. We show that there is always a coordinate map to locally eliminate the gauge fluctuations inducing the deformation of the symplectic structure. This uses the Moser's lemma; a refined version of the celebrated Darboux theorem. We discuss the relation between the coordinates change arising from Moser's lemma and the Seiberg--Witten map. As illustration, we consider the quantum Hall systems on CP^2. We derive the action describing the electromagnetic interaction of Hall droplets. In partic…
We develop a general method to compute correlation functions of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states on a curved space. In a curved space, local transformation properties of FQH states are examined through local geometric variations, which are essentially governed by the gravitational anomaly. Furthermore, we show that the electromagnetic response of FQH states is related to the gravitational response (a response to curvature). Thus, the gravitational anomaly is also seen in the structure factor and the Hall conductance in flat space. The method is based on iteration of a Ward identity obtaine…
The $ν= 1$ quantum Hall ground state in materials like GaAs is well known to be ferromagnetic in nature. The exchange part of the Coulomb interaction provides the necessary attractive force to align the electron spins spontaneously. The gapless Goldstone modes are the angular deviations of the magnetisation vector from its fixed ground state orientation. Furthermore, the system is known to support electrically charged spin skyrmion configurations. It has been claimed in the literature that these skyrmions are fermionic owing to an induced topological Hopf term in the effective action governing…
We show that the integer quantum Hall effect systems in plane, sphere or disc, can be formulated in terms of an algebraic unified scheme. This can be achieved by making use of a generalized Weyl--Heisenberg algebra and investigating its basic features. We study the electromagnetic excitation and derive the Hamiltonian for droplets of fermions on a two-dimensional Bargmann space (phase space). This excitation is introduced through a deformation (perturbation) of the symplectic structure of the phase space. We show the major role of Moser's lemma in dressing procedure, which allows us to elimina…
We consider a voltage-biased Josephson junction between two nanowires hosting Majorana zero modes which occur as topological protected zero-energy excitations at the junction. We show that two Majorana fermions localized at the junction, even though being neutral particles, interact with the electromagnetic field and generate coherent radiation similar to the conventional Josephson radiation. Within a semiclassical analysis of the radiation field, we find that the optical phase gets locked to the superconducting phase difference and that the radiation is emitted at half the Josephson frequency…
Two-dimensional electron systems with spin-orbit coupling in the proximity of a superconductor and a magnetic insulator have recently been considered as promising candidates to realize topological superconducting phases. Here we discuss electromagnetic response properties of these systems. Breaking of time-reversal symmetry leads to an anomalous Hall effect with a characteristic non-monotonic gate voltage dependence and a Hall conductivity that can change a sign as temperature is varied. The imaginary part of the Hall conductivity at finite frequency, which shows up for example in the Kerr rot…
We derive the implications of particle-vortex duality for the electromagnetic response of Quantum Hall systems beyond the linear-response regime. This provides a first theoretical explanation of the remarkable duality which has been observed in the nonlinear regime for the electromagnetic response of Quantum Hall systems.
We show that a moving vortex lattice, as it comes to a crystal edge, radiates into a free space the harmonics of the washboard frequency, $ω_0=2πv/a$, up to a superconducting gap, $Δ/\hbar$. Here $v$ is the velocity of the vortex lattice and $a$ is the intervortex spacing. We compute radiation power and show that this effect can be used for generation of terahertz radiation and for characterization of moving vortex lattices.
We use the identification of the edge mode of the filling fraction $ν=1$ quantum Hall phase with a 1+1 dimensional chiral Dirac fermion to construct an analogue model for a chiral fermion in a space-time geometry possessing an event horizon. By solving the model in the lowest Landau level, we show that the event horizon emits particles and holes with a thermal spectrum. Each emitted quasiparticle is correlated with an opposite-energy partner on the other side of the event horizon. Once we trace out these "unobservable" partners, we are left with a thermal density matrix.
A theory of thermal and nonthermal radiation in a vacuum background of arbitrary temperature generated by relativistic polarizable particle with spin is proposed. When the particle rotates, radiation is produced by vacuum fluctuations even in the case of zero temperature of the system. In the ultrarelativistic case, the spectral-angular intensity of radiation is concentrated along the velocity of the particle. At finite temperatures of particle and vacuum, the particle temperature (in its rest frame) rather quickly acquires an equilibrium magnitude depending on the velocities of rotation and u…
The influence of the electromagnetic irradiation pressure on a spheroidal metallic nanoparticle at the frequencies close to the surface plasmon vibrations has been considered. With the action of the radiation pressure, the polarizability of metal nanoparticle becomes a tensor quantity. The expressions for the resonance pressure components for the cases of plane-polarized and circularly polarized light have been derived. We have demonstrated that the resonance pressure can substantially depend on the shape of a non-spherical nanoparticle and its orientation with respect to the direction of ligh…
Microscopic quantum theory of nonlinear stimulated scattering of 2D Dirac particles in doped graphene on Coulomb field of impurity ions at the presence of an external strong coherent electromagnetic radiation is developed. We consider high Fermi energies and low frequencies (actually terahertz radiation) to exclude the valence electrons excitations. The Liouville-von Neumann equation for the density matrix is solved analytically, taking into account the interaction of electrons with the scattering potential in the Born approximation. With the help of this solution, the nonlinear inverse-bremss…
We investigate the optical response of strongly disordered quantum Hall states in two-dimensional Dirac materials and find qualitatively different effects in the radiation properties of the bulk versus the edge. We show that the far-field radiation from the edge is characterized by large multipole moments (> 50) due to the efficient transfer of angular momentum from the electrons into the scattered light. The maximum multipole transition moment is a direct measure of the coherence length of the edge states. Accessing these multipole transitions would provide new tools for optical spectroscopy …
The classical description of A_n internal degrees of freedom is given by making use of the Fock--Bargmann analytical realization. The symplectic deformation of phase space, including the internal degrees of freedom, is discussed. We show that the Moser's lemma provides a mapping to eliminate the fluctuations of the symplectic structure, which become encoded in the Hamiltonian of the system. We discuss the relation between Moser and Seiberg--Witten maps. One physics applications of this result is the electromagnetic excitation of a large collection of particles, obeying the generalized A_n stat…
This paper derives the macroscopic electric and magnetic fields and the surface susceptibilities for a metasurface, starting from the microscopic scatterer distribution. It is assumed that these scatterers behave as electric and magnetic dipoles under the influence of the incident radiation. Interestingly not only the retarded electromagnetic fields from oscillating dipoles are relevant to pass from the microscopic to the macroscopic representation, but the advanced fields must be considered too. It is found that the macroscopic fields are the sum of the incident fields plus the radiation-reac…
