Atomically thin van der Waals materials stacked with an interlayer twist have proven to be an excellent platform towards achieving gate-tunable correlated phenomena linked to the formation of flat electronic bands. In this work we demonstrate the formation of emergent correlated phases in multilayer rhombohedral graphene - a simple material that also exhibits a flat electronic band but without the need of having a moiré superlattice induced by twisted van der Waals layers. We show that two layers of bilayer graphene that are twisted by an arbitrary tiny angle host large (micron-scale) regions of uniform rhombohedral four-layer (ABCA) graphene that can be independently studied. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that ABCA graphene hosts an unprecedentedly sharp flat band of 3-5 meV half-width. We demonstrate that when this flat band straddles the Fermi level, a correlated many-body gap emerges with peak-to-peak value of 9.5 meV at charge neutrality. Mean field theoretical calculations indicate that the two primary candidates for the appearance of this broken symmetry state are a charge transfer excitonic insulator and a ferrimagnet. Finally, we show that ABCA graphene hosts surface topological helical edge states at natural interfaces with ABAB graphene which can be turned on and off with gate voltage, implying that small angle twisted double bilayer graphene is an ideal programmable topological quantum material.
We investigate the band structure of ABCA-tetralayer graphene (ABCA-TTLG) subjected to an external potential $V$ applied between top and bottom layers. Using the tight-binding model, including the nearest $t$ and next-nearest-neighbor $t'$ hopping, low-energy model and two-band approximation model we study the band structure variation along the lines $Γ-M-K-Γ$ in the first Brillouin zone, electronic band gap near Dirac point $K$ and transmission properties, respectively. Our results reveal that ABCA-TTLG exhibits markedly different properties as functions of $t'$ and $V$. We show that the hopp…
We investigate the competition between acoustic-phonon-mediated superconductivity and the long-range Coulomb interaction in moiréless graphene multilayers, specifically, Bernal bilayer graphene, rhombohedral trilayer graphene, and ABCA-stacked tetralayer graphene. In these graphene multilayers, the acoustic phonons can realize, through electron-phonon coupling, both spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings, and the intra-sublattice pairings ($s$-wave spin-singlet and $f$-wave spin-triplet) are the dominant channels. Our theory naturally explains the distinct recent experimental findings in Berna…
Motivated by the recent discoveries of superconductivity in bilayer and trilayer graphene, we theoretically investigate superconductivity and other interaction-driven phases in multilayer graphene stacks. To this end, we study the density of states of multilayer graphene with up to four layers at the single-particle band structure level in the presence of a transverse electric field. Among the considered structures, tetralayer graphene with rhombohedral (ABCA) stacking reaches the highest density of states. We study the phases that can arise in ABCA graphene by tuning the carrier density and t…
Graphene-based moiré superlattices are now established as an interesting platform for strongly-correlated many-electron physics, and have so far been characterized mainly by transport and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements. Motivated by recent experimental progress, we present a theoretical model study whose aim is to assess the potential of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to resolve some of the many open issues in these systems. The theory is developed specifically for graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (G/hBN) and twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) moiré superlat…

Strongly correlated quantum matter exhibits a rich variety of remarkable properties, but the organizing principles that underlie the behavior remain to be established. Graphene heterostructures, which can host narrow moire electron bands that amplify the correlation effect, represent a new setting to make progress on this overarching issue. In such correlated moire systems, an insulating state is a prominent feature of the phase diagram and may hold the key to understanding the basic physics. Here we advance the notion of a fragile insulator, a correlation-driven insulating state that is on th…
So far the physics of moiré graphene bilayers at large, incommensurate rotation angles has been considered uninteresting. It has been held that the interlayer coupling in such structures is weak and the system can be thought of as a pair of decoupled single graphene sheets to a good approximation. Here, we demonstrate that for large rotation angles near commensurate ones, the interlayer coupling, far from being weak, is able to completely localize electrons to within a large scale, geometrically frustrated network of topologically protected modes. The emergent geometric frustration of the syst…
ABC-stacked trilayer graphene/hBN moiré superlattice (TLG/hBN) has emerged as a playground for correlated electron physics. We report spectroscopy measurements of dual-gated TLG/hBN using Fourier transformed infrared photocurrent spectroscopy. We observed a strong optical transition between moiré mini-bands that narrows continuously as a bandgap is opened by gating, indicating a reduction of the single particle bandwidth. At half-filling of the valence flat band, a broad absorption peak emerges at ~18 meV, indicating direct optical excitation across an emerging Mott gap. Similar photocurrent s…
We introduce a new method to continuously map inhomogeneities of a moiré lattice and apply it to large-area topographic images we measure on open-device twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We show that the variation in the twist angle of a TBG device, which is frequently conjectured to be the reason for differences between devices with a supposed similar twist angle, is about 0.08° around the average of 2.02° over areas of several hundred nm, comparable to devices encapsulated between hBN slabs. We distinguish between an effective twist angle and local anisotropy and relate the latter to heterostr…

We theoretically study in-plane acoustic phonons of graphene/hexagonal boron nitride moiré superlattice by using a continuum model. We demonstrate that the original phonon bands of individual layers are strongly hybridized and reconstructed into moiré phonon bands consisting of dispersive bands and flat bands. The phonon band structure can be effectively described by a spring-mass network model to simulate the motion of moiré domain walls, where the flat-band modes are interpreted as vibrations of independent, decoupled strings. We also show that the moiré phonon has angular momentum due to th…
An unconventional insulating phase and a superconducting phase were recently discovered in the twisted bilayer graphene [Y. Cao et al, Nature {\bf 556}, 80; {\bf 556}, 43 (2018)], but the relevant low-energy electronic states have not been clearly identified yet. In this work, I show that the interlayer hopping induces a spatially modulated Dirac mass term in the continuum Hamiltonian, and leads to a low-energy band formed by Dirac zero modes in the moiré superlattice. This moiré band becomes extremely flat and thus strongly correlated as the Dirac velocity vanishes at the magic angle, and ent…
The specific rotational alignment of two-dimensional lattices results in a moiré superlattice with a larger period than the original lattices and allows one to engineer the electronic band structure of such materials. So far, transport signatures of such superlattices have been reported for graphene/hBN and graphene/graphene systems. Here we report moiré superlattices in fully hBN encapsulated graphene with both the top and the bottom hBN aligned to the graphene. In the graphene, two different moiré superlattices form with the top and the bottom hBN, respectively. The overlay of the two superl…
Low-energy moiré flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (tBG) have demonstrated incredible potentials to exhibit rich exotic quantum phenomena. Theoretically, the moiré flat bands of tBG are based on the extended structures, i.e., the moiré patterns with periodic boundary conditions. However, a fundamental question of whether the flat bands can exist in the graphene moiré patterns with a reduced structure symmetry, such as sample edges, remains unanswered. Here, via scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we study the local electronic properties of a magic-angle tBG near th…
When using hexagonal boron-nitride (hBN) as a substrate for graphene, the resulting moiré pattern creates secondary Dirac points. By encapsulating a multilayer graphene within aligned hBN sheets the controlled moiré stacking may offer even richer benefits. Using advanced tight-binding simulations on atomistically-relaxed heterostructures, here we show that the gap at the secondary Dirac point can be opened in selected moiré-stacking configurations, and is independent of any additional vertical gating of the heterostructure. On the other hand, gating can broadly tune the gap at the principal Di…
By using the first-principles method based on density of functional theory, we study the electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene with some specific twist angles and interlayer spacings. With the decrease of the twist angle(the unit cell becomes larger), the energy band becomes narrower and Coulomb repulsion increases, leading to the enhancement of electronic correlation; On the other hand, as the interlayer spacing decreases and the interlayer coupling becomes stronger, the correlation becomes stronger. By tuning the interlayer coupling, we can realize the strongly correlated state w…
A periodic spatial modulation, as created by a moiré pattern, has been extensively studied with the view to engineer and tune the properties of graphene. Graphene encapsulated by hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) when slightly misaligned with the top and bottom hBN layers experiences two interfering moiré patterns, resulting in a so-called super-moiré (SM). This leads to a lattice and electronic spectrum reconstruction. A geometrical construction of the non-relaxed SM patterns allows us to indicate qualitatively the induced changes in the electronic properties and to locate the SM features in the …
Graphene moire superlattices are outstanding platforms to study correlated electron physics and superconductivity with exceptional tunability. However, robust superconductivity has been measured only in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG) and magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MA-TTG). The absence of a superconducting phase in certain moire flat bands raises a question on the superconducting mechanism. In this work, we investigate electronic structure and electron-phonon coupling in graphene moire superlattices based on atomistic calculations. We show that electron-phonon couplin…
Moiré superlattice created by twist stacking has multiple physical properties. These physical properties depend on the twist angle, hence investigation of the twist angle dependency is important for the deep understanding of physical phenomena in moiré superlattice. In this work, negative magnetoresistance owing to weak localization (WL) was investigated in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) as a function of the twist angle. The ratio of the intervalley scattering time to the intravalley scattering time, estimated using the WL formula for bilayer graphene, tended to decrease as the twist a…
Stacking three monolayers of graphene with a twist generally produces two moiré patterns. A moiré of moiré structure then emerges at larger distance where the three layers periodically realign. We devise here an effective low-energy theory to describe the spectrum at distances larger than the moiré lengthscale. In each valley of the underlying graphene, the theory comprises one Dirac cone at the ${\bf Γ}_M$ point of the moiré Brillouin zone and two weakly gapped points at ${\bf K}_M$ and ${\bf K}'_M$. The velocities and small gaps exhibit a spatial dependence in the moiré-of-moiré unit cell, e…
We study the edge states of twisted bilayer graphene and their topological origin. We show that the twisted bilayer graphene has special edge states associated with the moiré pattern, and the emergence of these moiré edge states is linked with the sliding Chern number, which describes topological charge pumping caused by relative interlayer sliding. When one layer of the twisted bilayer is relatively slid with respect to the other layer, the edge states are transferred from a single band to another across the band gap, and the number of the edge states pumped in a sliding cycle is shown to be …
Layers of two-dimensional materials stacked with a small twist-angle give rise to beating periodic patterns on a scale much larger than the original lattice, referred to as a moiré superlattice. When the stacking involves more than two layers with independent twist angles between adjacent layers, it generates moiré of moiré superlattices, with multiple length scales that control the system's behavior. Here we demonstrate these effects of a high-order moiré superlattice in twisted trilayer graphene with two consecutive small twist angles. We report correlated insulating states near the half fil…
Recent experiments have observed possible spin- and valley-polarized insulators and spin-triplet superconductivity in twisted double bilayer graphene, a moire structure consisting of a pair of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. Besides the continuously tunable band widths controlled by an applied displacement field and twist angle, these moire bands also possess van Hove singularities near the Fermi surface and a field-dependent nesting which is far from perfect. Here we carry out a perturbative renormalization group analysis to unbiasedly study the competition among all possible instabilities i…
In graphene moiré superlattices, electronic interactions between layers are mostly hidden as band structures get crowded because of folding, making their interpretation cumbersome. Here, the evolution of the electronic band structure as a function of the interlayer rotation angle is studied using Density Functional Theory followed by unfolding bands and then comparing them to their corresponding individual components. We observe interactions at regions not theoretically elucidated so far, where for small interlayer angles, gaps turn into discrete-like states that are evenly spaced in energy. W…
In heterostructures consisting of atomically thin crystals layered on top of one another, lattice mismatch or rotation between the layers results in long-wavelength moiré superlattices. These moiré patterns can drive significant band structure reconstruction of the composite material, leading to a wide range of emergent phenomena including superconductivity, magnetism, fractional Chern insulating states, and moiré excitons. Here, we investigate monolayer graphene encapsulated between two crystals of boron nitride (BN), where the rotational alignment between all three components can be varied. …
Moiré superlattices (MSL) formed in angle-aligned bilayers of van der Waals materials have become a promising platform to realize novel two-dimensional electronic states. Angle-aligned trilayer structures can form two sets of MSLs which could potentially interfere with each other. In this work, we directly image the moiré patterns in both monolayer graphene aligned on hBN and twisted bilayer graphene aligned on hBN, using combined scanning microwave impedance microscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy. Correlation of the two techniques reveals the contrast mechanism for the achieved ult…
We study the in-plane acoustic phonons in twisted bilayer graphenes using the effective continuum approach. We calculate the phonon modes by solving the continuum equation of motion for infinitesimal vibration around the static relaxed state with triangular domain structure. We find that the moiré interlayer potential only affects the in-plane asymmetric modes, where the original linear dispersion is broken down into miniphonon bands separated by gaps, while the in-plane symmetric modes with their linear dispersion are hardly affected. The phonon wave functions of asymmetric modes are regarded…
We construct an analytic continuum model to describe the electronic structure and the electron-phonon interaction in twisted bilayer graphenes with arbitrary lattice deformation. Starting from the tight-binding model, we derive the interlayer Hamiltonian in the presence of general lattice displacement, and obtain a long-wavelength continuum expression for smooth deformation. We show that the continuum model correctly describes the band structures of the lattice-relaxed twisted bilayer graphenes. We apply the formula to the phonon vibration, and derive an explicit expression of the electron-pho…
