Recent experiments on multilayer graphene materials have discovered a plethora of correlated phases, including ferromagnetism and superconductivity, in the absence of a moiré potential. These findings pose an intriguing question of whether an underlying moiré potential plays a key role in determining the phases realizable in tunable two-dimensional quantum materials, or whether it merely acts as a weak periodic potential that perturbs an underlying correlated many body state. In this work, employing a Hartree-Fock mean field analysis, we examine this question theoretically by quantitatively studying the effects of an hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN) substrate on ABC-stacked trilayer graphene (ABC-TLG). For the topologically trivial regime, we find that the moiré potential leads to a strong suppression of the ferromagnetism of the underlying metal. Further, band insulators appear solely at full filling of the moiré unit cell, with a moiré potential stronger than is conventionally assumed. Thus the observed correlated insulating phases in ABC-TLG aligned with h-BN cannot be understood through band folding of the ferromagnetic metal found without the moiré potential. For the topologically non-trivial regime, we discover the appearance of prominent incompressible states when fractional hole fillings (of the moiré unit cell) coincide with the occurrence of fractional-metallic states in the moiré-less setting, as well as a slight weakening of the ferromagnetic nature of the phases; however this once again requires a moiré potential stronger than is conventionally assumed. Our findings highlight the importance of interactions in renormalizing the electronic bandstructure, and emphasizes the key role played by the moiré potential in determining the strong correlation physics.
We investigate the effect of electron-electron interactions in ABC stacked graphene trilayers. In the gapless regime, we show that the self-energy corrections lead to the renormalization of the dynamical exponent $z=3+α_{1}/N$, with $α_{1}\approx0.52$ and $N$ is the number of fermionic species. Although the quasiparticle residue is suppressed near the neutrality point, the lifetime has a sublinear scaling with the energy and the quasiparticles are well defined even at zero energy. We calculate the renormalization of different physical observables, which can be directly measured in experiments.
The effects of topology and electron-electron interactions on the phase diagram of ABC stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) at the neutrality point are investigated within a weak coupling renormalization group approach. We find that the leading instability of TLG with only a forward scattering density-density interaction is towards a mirror-breaking gapless state. Addition of a small, but finite back scattering favors gapped phases, allowing us to make connections to the existing experiments on TLG. We identify a fundamental symmetry difference between TLG and bilayer graphene (BLG) which is respon…
ABC-stacked trilayer graphene/hBN moiré superlattice (TLG/hBN) has emerged as a playground for correlated electron physics. We report spectroscopy measurements of dual-gated TLG/hBN using Fourier transformed infrared photocurrent spectroscopy. We observed a strong optical transition between moiré mini-bands that narrows continuously as a bandgap is opened by gating, indicating a reduction of the single particle bandwidth. At half-filling of the valence flat band, a broad absorption peak emerges at ~18 meV, indicating direct optical excitation across an emerging Mott gap. Similar photocurrent s…
We provide a complete theoretical interpretation of the metallic broken spin/valley symmetry states recently discovered in ABC trilayer graphene (ABC) perturbed by a large transverse displacement field. Our conclusions combine insights from ABC trilayer graphene electronic structure models and mean field theory, and are guided by precise magneto-oscillation Fermi-surface-area measurements. We conclude that the physics of ABC trilayer graphene is shaped by the principle of momentum-space condensation, which favors Fermi surface reconstructions enabled by broken spin/valley flavor symmetries whe…

Motivated by the recently experimental reported signatures of the tunable Mott insulating state and superconductivity in an ABC graphene trilayer superlattice, we investigate the charge compressibility, the spin correlation, and the superconducting instability within the Hubbard model on a three-layer honeycomb lattice. It is found that an antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator emerges beyond a critical $U_c$ at half-filling, and the electronic correlation drives a $d+id$ superconducting pairing to be dominant over other pairing patterns in a wide doped region. The effective pairing inte…
The ABC-stacked N-layer-graphene family of two-dimensional electron systems is described at low energies by two remarkably flat bands with Bloch states that have strongly momentum-dependent phase differences between carbon pi-orbital amplitudes on different layers, and large associated momentum space Berry phases. These properties are most easily understood using a simplified model with only nearest-neighbor inter-layer hopping which leads to gapless semiconductor electronic structure, with p^N dispersion in both conduction and valence bands. We report on a study of the electronic band structu…
The moiré superlattice formed by ABC stacked trilayer graphene aligned with a hexagonal boron nitride substrate (TG/h-BN) provides an interesting system where both the bandwidth and the topology can be tuned by an applied perpendicular electric field $D$ . Thus the TG/h-BN system can simulate both Hubbard model physics and nearly flat Chern band physics within one sample. We derive lattice models for both signs of $D$ (which controls the band topology) separately through explicit Wannier orbital construction and mapping of Coulomb interaction. When the bands are topologically trivial, we discu…
Atomically thin van der Waals materials stacked with an interlayer twist have proven to be an excellent platform towards achieving gate-tunable correlated phenomena linked to the formation of flat electronic bands. In this work we demonstrate the formation of emergent correlated phases in multilayer rhombohedral graphene - a simple material that also exhibits a flat electronic band but without the need of having a moiré superlattice induced by twisted van der Waals layers. We show that two layers of bilayer graphene that are twisted by an arbitrary tiny angle host large (micron-scale) regions …
Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable …
The nature of the correlated phases found in some graphene heterostructures is under debate. We use dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) to analyze the effect of local correlations close to half-filling on one of such systems, the ABC trilayer graphene aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (ABC/hBN), which presents a moiré superlattice. This system has shown insulating phases at integer fillings of the moiré lattice, precisely the fillings at which a sufficiently strong Coulomb interaction (U$_{\rm Mott}$) may produce a metal-insulator Mott transition. Our calculations show that the electronic st…
We construct a van der Waals heterostructure consisting of three graphene layers stacked with alternating twisting angles $\pmθ$. At the average twist angle $θ\sim 1.56^{\circ}$, a theoretically predicted magic angle for the formation of flat electron bands, narrow conduction and valence moiré bands appear together with a linearly dispersing Dirac band. Upon doping the half-filled moiré valence band with holes, or the half-filled moiré conduction band with electrons, displacement field tunable superconductivity emerges, reaching a maximum critical temperature of 2.1 K at optimal doping and dis…
Exotic correlated insulating phases emerge in the ABC-stacked trilayer graphene-boron nitride Moire super-lattice at both quarter and half-filling. A single-band minimal model with valley contrasting staggered-flux is proposed to capture the relevant band structure, where the conspiracy of perfect Fermi-surface nesting and van Hove singularity strongly enhance the valley fluctuation, leading to inter-valley spiral (IVS) order at half filling. In this paper, we consider a strong coupling U(1)$_{v}\times $SU(2)$_{s}$ symmetric spin-valley model to obtain the correlated insulating state and the p…
Twisted trilayer graphene is a particularly promising moiré superlattice system, due to its tunability, strong superconductivity, and complex electronic symmetry breaking. Motivated by these properties, we study lattice relaxation and the long-wavelength phonon modes of this system. We show that mirror-symmetric trilayer graphene hosts, aside from the conventional acoustic phonon modes, two classes of shear modes, which are even and odd under mirror reflection. The mirror-even modes are found to be gapless and equivalent to the "phason" modes of twisted bilayer graphene, with appropriately res…
In a multi-layer electronic system, stacking order provides a rarely-explored degree of freedom for tuning its electronic properties. Here we demonstrate the dramatically different transport properties in trilayer graphene (TLG) with different stacking orders. At the Dirac point, ABA-stacked TLG remains metallic while the ABC counterpart becomes insulating. The latter exhibits a gap-like dI/dV characteristics at low temperature and thermally activated conduction at higher temperatures, indicating an intrinsic gap ~6 meV. In magnetic fields, in addition to an insulating state at filling factor …
Mott insulator plays a central role in strongly correlated physics, where the repulsive Coulomb interaction dominates over the electron kinetic energy and leads to insulating states with one electron occupying each unit cell. Doped Mott insulator is often described by the Hubbard model3, which can give rise to other correlated phenomena such as unusual magnetism and even high-temperature superconductivity. A tunable Mott insulator, where the competition between the Coulomb interaction and the kinetic energy can be varied in situ, can provide an invaluable model system for the study of Mott phy…
We derive the Hamiltonian for trilayer moiré systems with the Coulomb interaction projected onto the bands near the charge neutrality point. Motivated by the latest experimental results, we focus on the twisted symmetric trilayer graphene (TSTG) with a mirror-symmetry with respect to the middle layer. We provide a full symmetry analysis of the non-interacting Hamiltonian with a perpendicular displacement field coupling the band structure made otherwise of the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) and the high velocity Dirac fermions, and we identify a hidden non-local symmetry of the problem. In the …
Ferromagnetism is most common in transition metal compounds but may also arise in low-density two-dimensional electron systems, with signatures observed in silicon, III-V semiconductor systems, and graphene moiré heterostructures. Here we show that gate-tuned van Hove singularities in rhombohedral trilayer graphene drive the spontaneous ferromagnetic polarization of the electron system into one or more spin- and valley flavors. Using capacitance measurements on graphite-gated van der Waals heterostructures, we find a cascade of density- and electronic displacement field tuned phase transitions…
Moiré superlattices have recently emerged as a novel platform where correlated physics and superconductivity can be studied with unprecedented tunability. Although correlated effects have been observed in several other moiré systems, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) remains the only one where robust superconductivity has been reproducibly measured. Here we realize a new moiré superconductor, mirror symmetric magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) with dramatically richer tunability in electronic structure and superconducting properties. Hall effect and quantum oscillations m…
Recent experiment has shown that the ABC-stacked trilayer graphene-boron nitride Moire super-lattice at half-filling is a Mott insulator. Based on symmetry analysis and effective band structure calculation, we propose a valley-contrasting chiral tight-binding model with local Coulomb interaction to describe this Moire super-lattice system. By matching the positions of van Hove points in the low-energy effective bands, the valley-contrasting staggered flux per triangle is determined around $π/2$. When the valence band is half-filled, the Fermi surfaces are found to be perfectly nested between t…
The flat bands resulting from moiré superlattices in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) and ABC-trilayer graphene aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) have been shown to give rise to fascinating correlated electron phenomena such as correlated insulators and superconductivity. More recently, orbital magnetism associated with correlated Chern insulators was found in this class of layered structures centered at integer multiples of n0, the density corresponding to one electron per moiré superlattice unit cell. Here we report the experimental observation of ferromagnetism …
When layers of graphene are rotationally misaligned by the magic angle, the moiré superlattice features extremely flat bands. Due to the enhanced density of states, the Coulomb interaction induces a variety of instabilities. The most prominent occur at integer filling and are therefore commonly attributed to spontaneous polarization of the moiré unit cell's `flavor' degrees of freedom -- spin, valley, and the flat-band degeneracy. As the dominant member of the hierarchy, these correlated states are thought to crucially determine further instabilities at lower energy scales, such as superconduc…
Due to its potential connection with nematicity, electronic anisotropy has been the subject of intense research effort on a wide variety of material platforms. The emergence of spatial anisotropy not only offers a characterization of material properties of metallic phases, which cannot be accessed via conventional transport techniques, but it also provides a unique window into the interplay between Coulomb interaction and broken symmetry underlying the electronic order. In this work, we utilize a new scheme of angle-resolved transport measurement (ARTM) to characterize electron anisotropy in m…
Starting with twisted bilayer graphene, graphene-based moiré materials have recently been established as a new platform for studying strong electron correlations. In this paper, we study twisted graphene monolayers on trilayer graphene and demonstrate that this system can host flat bands when the twist angle is close to the magic-angle of 1.16$^\circ$. When monolayer graphene is twisted on ABA trilayer graphene, the flat bands are not isolated, but are intersected by a Dirac cone with a large Fermi velocity. In contrast, graphene twisted on ABC trilayer graphene (denoted AtABC) exhibits a gap …
Mirror-symmetric magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) hosts flat electronic bands close to zero energy, and has been recently shown to exhibit abundant correlated quantum phases with flexible electrical tunability. However studying these phases proved challenging as these are obscured by intertwined Dirac bands. In this work, we demonstrate a novel spectroscopy technique, that allows to quantify the energy gaps and Chern numbers of the correlated states in MATTG by driving band crossings between Dirac cone Landau levels and the energy gaps in the flat bands. We uncover hard correlated…
Low-energy electronic states in monolayer and bilayer graphenes present chiral charge carriers with unique and unusual properties of interest for electronic applications. Here, we report the magnetotransport measurements in the ABC-stacked trilayer graphene as a function of charge carrier density, magnetic field, and temperature, which show clear evidence of l = 3 chiral quasiparticles with cubic dispersion, existing in a large, 20x60 sq. microns device. Shubnikov-deHaas oscillations (SdHO) reveal the Berry's phase 3π, and the marked increase of cyclotron mass near charge neutrality, consisten…
We calculate the dynamical polarization function and solve a self-consistent gap equation in the random phase approximation in undoped ABC-stacked n-layer graphene. We find that the gap is maximal in trilayer graphene and decreases monotonously for $n \ge 4$ because the effects of screening in the gap equation win over those connected with the flattening of electron bands as n increases.
Understanding the mechanism of high temperature (high Tc) superconductivity is a central problem in condensed matter physics. It is often speculated that high Tc superconductivity arises from a doped Mott insulator as described by the Hubbard model. An exact solution of the Hubbard model, however, is extremely challenging due to the strong electron-electron correlation. Therefore, it is highly desirable to experimentally study a model Hubbard system in which the unconventional superconductivity can be continuously tuned by varying the Hubbard parameters. Here we report signatures of tunable su…

The N=0 Landau levels of ABC and ABA trilayer graphene both have approximate 12-fold degeneracies that are lifted by interactions to produce strong quantum Hall effects (QHE) at all integer filling factors between nu=-6 and nu=6. We discuss similarities and differences between the strong-magnetic-field weak-disorder physics of the two trilayer cases, and between trilayer and bilayer cases. These differences can be used to identify the stacking order of high-quality trilayer samples by studying their quantum Hall effects.
We consider a configuration of three stacked graphene monolayers with equal consecutive twist angles $θ$. Remarkably, in the chiral limit when interlayer coupling terms between $\textrm{AA}$ sites of the moiré pattern are neglected we find four perfectly flat bands (for each valley) at a sequence of magic angles which are exactly equal to the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) magic angles divided by $\sqrt{2}$. Therefore, the first magic angle for equal-twist trilayer graphene (eTTG) in the chiral limit is $θ_{*} \approx 1.05^{\circ}/\sqrt{2} \approx 0.74^{\circ}$. We prove this relation analytic…

Moiré quantum matter has emerged as a novel materials platform where correlated and topological phases can be explored with unprecedented control. Among them, magic-angle systems constructed from two or three layers of graphene have shown robust superconducting phases with unconventional characteristics. However, direct evidence for unconventional pairing remains to be experimentally demonstrated. Here, we show that magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) exhibits superconductivity up to in-plane magnetic fields in excess of 10 T, which represents a large ($2\sim3$ times) violation of th…
Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) has emerged as a novel moiré material that exhibits both strong electronic correlations and unconventional superconductivity. However, spectroscopic studies of its electronic properties are lacking, and the nature of superconductivity and the corresponding order parameter in this system remain elusive. Here we perform high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of MATTG and reveal extensive regions of atomic reconstruction that favor mirror-symmetric stacking. In these regions, we observe a cascade of symmetry-breaking electronic…

Motivated by the observation of two distinct superconducting phases in the moiréless ABC-stacked rhombohedral trilayer graphene, we investigate the electron-acoustic-phonon coupling as a possible pairing mechanism. We predict the existence of superconductivity with the highest $T_c\sim 3$K near the Van Hove singularity. Away from the Van Hove singularity, $T_c$ remains finite in a wide range of doping. In our model, the $s$-wave spin-singlet and $f$-wave spin-triplet pairings yield the same $T_c$, while other pairing states have negligible $T_c$. Our theory provides a simple explanation for th…

We introduce and study a minimum two-orbital Hubbard model on a triangular lattice, which captures the key features of both the trilayer ABC-stacked graphene-boron nitride heterostructure and twisted transition metal dichalcogenides in a broad parameter range. Our model comprises first- and second-nearest neighbor hoppings with valley-contrasting flux that accounts for trigonal warping in the band structure. For the strong-coupling regime with one electron per site, we derive a spin-orbital exchange Hamiltonian and find the semiclassical ground state to be a spin-valley density wave. We show t…

Moiré flatbands, occurring, e.g., in twisted bilayer graphene at magic angles, have attracted ample interest due to their high degree of experimental tunability and the intriguing possibility of generating novel strongly interacting phases. Here we consider the core problem of Coulomb interactions within fractionally filled spin and valley polarized Moiré flatbands and demonstrate that the dual description in terms of holes, which acquire a nontrivial hole dispersion, provides key physical intuition and enables the use of standard perturbative techniques for this strongly correlated problem. I…
In a recent experiment [Lin et al., arXiv:2112.07841], the superconducting phase hosted by a heterostructure of mirror-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene and WSe$_2$ was shown to exhibit significantly different critical currents in opposite directions in the absence of external magnetic fields. We here develop a microscopic theory and analyze necessary conditions for this zero-field superconducting diode effect. Taking into account the spin-orbit coupling induced in trilayer graphene via the proximity effect, we classify the pairing instabilities and normal-state orders and derive which combi…
Motivated by recent experiments on ABC-stacked rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG) which observed spin-valley symmetry-breaking and superconductivity, we study instabilities of the RTG metallic state to symmetry breaking orders. We find that interactions select the inter-valley coherent order (IVC) as the preferred ordering channel over a wide range, whose theoretically determined phase boundaries agree well with experiments on both the hole and electron doped sides. The Fermi surfaces near van Hove singularities admit partial nesting between valleys, which promotes both inter-valley supercon…
Topology and electron interactions are two central themes in modern condensed matter physics. Here we propose graphene based systems where both the band topology and interaction effects can be simply controlled with electric fields. We study a number of systems of twisted double layers with small twist angle where a moiré super-lattice is formed. Each layer is chosen to be either AB stacked bilayer graphene (BG), ABC stacked trilayer graphene (TG), or hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). In these systems a vertical applied electric field enables control of the bandwidth, and interestingly also the …
