The N=0 Landau levels of ABC and ABA trilayer graphene both have approximate 12-fold degeneracies that are lifted by interactions to produce strong quantum Hall effects (QHE) at all integer filling factors between nu=-6 and nu=6. We discuss similarities and differences between the strong-magnetic-field weak-disorder physics of the two trilayer cases, and between trilayer and bilayer cases. These differences can be used to identify the stacking order of high-quality trilayer samples by studying their quantum Hall effects.
Trilayer graphene in the fractional Quantum Hall Effect regime displays a set of unique interaction-induced transitions that can be tuned entirely by the applied bias voltage. These transitions occur near the anti-crossing points of two Landau levels. In a large magnetic field ($> 8$ T) the electron-electron interactions close the anti-crossing gap, resulting in some unusual transitions between different Landau levels. For the filling factor $ν=\frac23$, these transitions are accompanied by a change of spin polarization of the ground state. For a small Zeeman energy, this provides an unique op…

Motivated by recent experiments on ABC-stacked rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG) which observed spin-valley symmetry-breaking and superconductivity, we study instabilities of the RTG metallic state to symmetry breaking orders. We find that interactions select the inter-valley coherent order (IVC) as the preferred ordering channel over a wide range, whose theoretically determined phase boundaries agree well with experiments on both the hole and electron doped sides. The Fermi surfaces near van Hove singularities admit partial nesting between valleys, which promotes both inter-valley supercon…
Superconductivity was recently discovered in rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG) in the absence of a moiré potential. Superconductivity is observed proximate to a metallic state with reduced isospin symmetry, but it remains unknown whether this is a coincidence or a key ingredient for superconductivity. Using a Hartree-Fock analysis and constraints from experiments, we argue that the symmetry breaking is inter-valley coherent (IVC) in nature. We evaluate IVC fluctuations as a possible pairing glue, and find that they lead to chiral unconventional superconductivity when the fluctuations are st…
Multilayer graphene lattices allow for an additional tunability of the band structure by the strong perpendicular electric field. In particular, the emergence of the new multiple Dirac points in ABA stacked trilayer graphene subject to strong transverse electric fields was proposed theoretically and confirmed experimentally. These new Dirac points dubbed ``gullies'' emerge from the interplay between strong electric field and trigonal warping. In this work we first characterize the properties of new emergent Dirac points and show that the electric field can be used to tune the distance between …
We present low temperature transport measurements on dual-gated suspended trilayer graphene in the quantum Hall (QH) regime. We observe QH plateaus at filling factors ν=-8, -2, 2, 6, and 10, in agreement with the full-parameter tight binding calculations. In high magnetic fields, odd-integer plateaus are also resolved, indicating almost complete lifting of the 12-fold degeneracy of the lowest Landau levels (LL). Under an out-of-plane electric field E, we observe degeneracy breaking and transitions between QH plateaus. Interestingly, depending on its direction, E selectively breaks the LL degen…
We report pronounced magnetoconductance oscillations observed on suspended bilayer and trilayer graphene devices with mobilities up to 270,000 cm2/Vs. For bilayer devices, we observe conductance minima at all integer filling factors nu between 0 and -8, as well as a small plateau at ν=1/3. For trilayer devices, we observe features at nu=-1, -2, -3 and -4, and at ν~0.5 that persist to 4.5K at B=8T. All of these features persist for all accessible values of Vg and B, and could suggest the onset of symmetry breaking of the first few Landau (LL) levels and fractional quantum Hall states.
The intrinsic Zeeman energy is precisely one half of the cyclotron energy for electrons in graphene. As a result a Landau-level mixing occurs to create the energy spectrum comprised of the $4j$-fold degenerated zero-energy level and 4-fold degenerated nonzero-energy levels in the $j$-layer graphene, where $j=1,2,3$ for monolayer, bilayer and trilayer, respectively. The degeneracy manifests itself in the quantum Hall (QH) effect. We study how the degeneracy is removed by the Coulomb interactions. With respect to the zero-energy level, an excitonic gap opens by making a BCS-type condensation of …
Mirror-symmetric magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) hosts flat electronic bands close to zero energy, and has been recently shown to exhibit abundant correlated quantum phases with flexible electrical tunability. However studying these phases proved challenging as these are obscured by intertwined Dirac bands. In this work, we demonstrate a novel spectroscopy technique, that allows to quantify the energy gaps and Chern numbers of the correlated states in MATTG by driving band crossings between Dirac cone Landau levels and the energy gaps in the flat bands. We uncover hard correlated…
Ferromagnetism is most common in transition metal compounds but may also arise in low-density two-dimensional electron systems, with signatures observed in silicon, III-V semiconductor systems, and graphene moiré heterostructures. Here we show that gate-tuned van Hove singularities in rhombohedral trilayer graphene drive the spontaneous ferromagnetic polarization of the electron system into one or more spin- and valley flavors. Using capacitance measurements on graphite-gated van der Waals heterostructures, we find a cascade of density- and electronic displacement field tuned phase transitions…
Motivated by recent experimental observations of correlated metallic phases and superconductivity in rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG), we perform an unbiased study of electronic ordering instabilities in hole-doped RTG. Specifically, we focus on electronic states energetically proximate to Van Hove singularities (VHSs), where a large density of states promotes different interaction-induced symmetry-breaking electronic orders. To resolve the Fermi surface near VHSs, we construct a fermionic hot-spot model and demonstrate that a perpendicular electric field can tune different nesting structu…
Exotic correlated insulating phases emerge in the ABC-stacked trilayer graphene-boron nitride Moire super-lattice at both quarter and half-filling. A single-band minimal model with valley contrasting staggered-flux is proposed to capture the relevant band structure, where the conspiracy of perfect Fermi-surface nesting and van Hove singularity strongly enhance the valley fluctuation, leading to inter-valley spiral (IVS) order at half filling. In this paper, we consider a strong coupling U(1)$_{v}\times $SU(2)$_{s}$ symmetric spin-valley model to obtain the correlated insulating state and the p…
Moiré superlattices have recently emerged as a novel platform where correlated physics and superconductivity can be studied with unprecedented tunability. Although correlated effects have been observed in several other moiré systems, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) remains the only one where robust superconductivity has been reproducibly measured. Here we realize a new moiré superconductor, mirror symmetric magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) with dramatically richer tunability in electronic structure and superconducting properties. Hall effect and quantum oscillations m…
We investigate the strong-field dynamics of a paramagnetic two-band Mott insulator using real-time dynamical mean-field theory. A dielectric breakdown occurs due to many-body Landau-Zener tunnelling, with a threshold field determined by the gap. For a large range of fields, however, we predict that the tunnelling currents are small enough to allow the observation of field-induced localization of electrons, which becomes most strikingly evident in atomic-like local spin multiplets determined by the Hund's coupling $J$. This field-induced localization might provide a way of measuring the value o…
The current proposals for producing non-Abelian anyons and Majorana particles, which are neither fermions nor bosons, are primarily based on the realization of topological superconductivity in two dimensions. We show theoretically that the unique Landau level structure of bilayer graphene provides a new possible avenue for achieving such exotic particles. Specifically, we demonstrate the feasibility of a "parton" fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state, which supports non-Abelian particles without the usual topological superconductivity. Furthermore, we advance this state as the fundamental explan…
Electron edge states in graphene in the Quantum Hall effect regime can carry both charge and spin. We show that spin splitting of the zeroth Landau level gives rise to counterpropagating modes with opposite spin polarization. These chiral spin modes lead to a rich variety of spin current states, depending on the spin flip rate. A method to control the latter locally is proposed. We estimate Zeeman spin splitting enhanced by exchange, and obtain a spin gap of a few hundred Kelvin.
Landau level bending near the edge of graphene, described using 2d Dirac equation, provides a microscopic framework for understanding the quantum Hall Effect (QHE) in this material. We review properties of the QHE edge states in graphene, with emphasis on the novel phenomena that arise due to Dirac character of electronic states. A method of mapping out the dispersion of the edge states using scanning tunneling probes is proposed. The Zeeman splitting of Landau levels is shown to create a particularly interesting situation around the Dirac point, where it gives rise to counter-circulating mode…
We give a self contained review of a recently developed strong coupling theory of magic-angle graphene. An advantage of this approach is that a single formulation can capture both the insulating and superconducting states, and with a few simplifying assumptions, can be treated analytically. We begin by reviewing the electronic structure of magic angle graphene's flat bands, in a limit that exposes their peculiar band topology and geometry. We highlight how similarities between the flat bands and the lowest Landau level give insight into the effect of interactions. For example, at certain fract…
Recently Chern insulators with Chern number $C=1$ and $C=2$ in zero (or very small) magnetic field have been observed in two moire graphene systems: twisted bilayer graphene and ABC trilayer graphene, both aligned with a hexagonal Boron-Nitride (h-BN) substrate. These Chern insulator states arise due to many body effects in the Chern bands of these systems when they are partially filled to a total integer filling $ν_T = 1,3$ (including spin and valley degrees of freedom). A simple possible explanation is from Hartree-Fock mean field theory which predicts valley and spin polarization in the zer…
The electronic properties of graphene can be manipulated via mechanical deformations, which opens prospects for studying the Dirac fermions in new regimes and for new device applications. Certain natural configurations of strain generate large nearly uniform pseudo-magnetic fields, which have opposite signs in the two valleys, and give rise to flat spin- and valley-degenerate pseudo Landau levels (PLLs). Here we consider the effect of the Coulomb interactions in strained graphene with uniform pseudo-magnetic field. We show that the spin/valley degeneracies of the PLLs get lifted by the interac…
