Multilayer graphene lattices allow for an additional tunability of the band structure by the strong perpendicular electric field. In particular, the emergence of the new multiple Dirac points in ABA stacked trilayer graphene subject to strong transverse electric fields was proposed theoretically and confirmed experimentally. These new Dirac points dubbed ``gullies'' emerge from the interplay between strong electric field and trigonal warping. In this work we first characterize the properties of new emergent Dirac points and show that the electric field can be used to tune the distance between gullies in the momentum space. We demonstrate that the band structure has multiple Lifshitz transitions and higher-order singularity of ``monkey saddle'' type. Following the characterization of the band structure, we consider the spectrum of Landau levels and structure of their wave functions. In the limit of strong electric fields when gullies are well separated in momentum space, they give rise to triply degenerate Landau levels. In the second part of this work, we investigate how degeneracy between three gully Landau levels is lifted in presence of interactions. Within the Hartree-Fock approximation we show that the symmetry breaking state interpolates between fully gully polarized state that breaks $C_3$ symmetry at high displacement field, and the gully symmetric state when the electric field is decreased. The discontinuous transition between these two states is driven by enhanced inter-gully tunneling and exchange. We conclude by outlining specific experimental predictions for the existence of such a symmetry-breaking state.
Bernal-stacked multilayer graphene is a versatile platform to explore quantum transport phenomena and interaction physics due to its exceptional tunability via electrostatic gating. For instance, upon applying a perpendicular electric field, its band structure exhibits several off-center Dirac points (so-called Dirac gullies) in each valley. Here, the formation of Dirac gullies and the interaction-induced breakdown of gully coherence is explored via magnetotransport measurements in high-quality Bernal-stacked (ABA) trilayer graphene. In the absence of a magnetic field, multiple Lifshitz transi…
We report on quantum capacitance measurements of high quality, graphite- and hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated Bernal stacked trilayer graphene devices. At zero applied magnetic field, we observe a number of electron density- and electrical displacement-tuned features in the electronic compressibility associated with changes in Fermi surface topology. At high displacement field and low density, strong trigonal warping gives rise to emergent Dirac gullies centered near the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin and related by three fold rotation symmetry. At low magnetic fields of $B=1.25$~T, th…
In this article we study the ferromagnetic behavior of ABC-stacked trilayer graphene. This is done using a nearest-neighbor tight-binding model, in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. For a given electron-electron interaction g and doping level n, we determine whether the total energy is minimized for a paramagnetic or ferromagnetic configuration of our variational parameters. The g versus n phase diagram is first calculated for the unscreened case. We then include the effects of screening using a simplified expression for the fermion bubble diagram. We show that ferromagnetism in…
Using transport measurements, we investigate multicomponent quantum Hall (QH) ferromagnetism in dual-gated rhombohedral trilayer graphene (r-TLG), in which the real spin, orbital pseudospin and layer pseudospins of the lowest Landau level form spontaneous ordering. We observe intermediate quantum Hall plateaus, indicating a complete lifting of the degeneracy of the zeroth Landau level (LL) in the hole-doped regime. In charge neutral r-TLG, the orbital degeneracy is broken first, and the layer degeneracy is broken last and only the in presence of an interlayer potential U. In the phase space of…
We study the ground state properties of an ABA-stacked trilayer graphene. The low energy band structure can be described by a combination of both a linear and a quadratic particle-hole symmetric dispersions, reminiscent of monolayer- and bilayer-graphene, respectively. The multi-band structure offers more channels for instability towards ferromagnetism when the Coulomb interaction is taken into account. Indeed, if one associates a pseudo-spin 1/2 degree of freedom to the bands (parabolic/linear), it is possible to realize also a band-ferromagnetic state, where there is a shift in the energy ba…
Trilayer graphene is receiving an increasing level of attention due to its stacking--dependent magnetoelectric and optoelectric properties, and its more robust ferromagnetism relative to monolayer and bilayer variants. Additionally, rhombohedral stacked trilayer graphene presents the possibility of easily opening a gap via either an external electric field perpendicular to the layers, or via the application of external strain. In this paper, we consider an external electric field to open a bandgap in rhombohedral trilayer graphene and study the excitonic optical response of the system. This is…
Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable …
Starting with twisted bilayer graphene, graphene-based moiré materials have recently been established as a new platform for studying strong electron correlations. In this paper, we study twisted graphene monolayers on trilayer graphene and demonstrate that this system can host flat bands when the twist angle is close to the magic-angle of 1.16$^\circ$. When monolayer graphene is twisted on ABA trilayer graphene, the flat bands are not isolated, but are intersected by a Dirac cone with a large Fermi velocity. In contrast, graphene twisted on ABC trilayer graphene (denoted AtABC) exhibits a gap …
Motivated by the observation of two distinct superconducting phases in the moiréless ABC-stacked rhombohedral trilayer graphene, we investigate the electron-acoustic-phonon coupling as a possible pairing mechanism. We predict the existence of superconductivity with the highest $T_c\sim 3$K near the Van Hove singularity. Away from the Van Hove singularity, $T_c$ remains finite in a wide range of doping. In our model, the $s$-wave spin-singlet and $f$-wave spin-triplet pairings yield the same $T_c$, while other pairing states have negligible $T_c$. Our theory provides a simple explanation for th…
Ferromagnetism is most common in transition metal compounds but may also arise in low-density two-dimensional electron systems, with signatures observed in silicon, III-V semiconductor systems, and graphene moiré heterostructures. Here we show that gate-tuned van Hove singularities in rhombohedral trilayer graphene drive the spontaneous ferromagnetic polarization of the electron system into one or more spin- and valley flavors. Using capacitance measurements on graphite-gated van der Waals heterostructures, we find a cascade of density- and electronic displacement field tuned phase transitions…
There is an increasing interest in the electronic properties of few layer graphene as it offers a platform to study electronic interactions because the dispersion of bands can be tuned with number and stacking of layers in combination with electric field. However, electronic interaction becomes important only in very clean devices and so far the trilayer graphene experiments are understood within non-interacting electron picture. Here, we report evidence of strong electronic interactions and quantum Hall ferromagnetism (QHF) seen in ABA trilayer graphene (ABA-TLG). Due to high mobility $\sim$5…
The flat bands resulting from moiré superlattices in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) and ABC-trilayer graphene aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) have been shown to give rise to fascinating correlated electron phenomena such as correlated insulators and superconductivity. More recently, orbital magnetism associated with correlated Chern insulators was found in this class of layered structures centered at integer multiples of n0, the density corresponding to one electron per moiré superlattice unit cell. Here we report the experimental observation of ferromagnetism …

Recent experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that twisted trilayer graphene (tTLG) is a highly tunable platform to study the correlated insulating states, ferromagnetism, and superconducting properties. Here we explore the possibility of tuning electronic correlations of the tTLG via a vertical pressure. A full tight-binding model is used to accurately describe the pressure-dependent interlayer interactions. Our results show that pressure can push a relatively larger twist angle (for instance, $1.89^{\circ}$) tTLG to reach the flat-band regime. Next, we obtain the relationshi…
