We describe a diagrammatic technique for non-Hermitian fermionic systems that is applicable in the steady state, and which allows addressing correlations effects by systematic expansion. Applying this method to exceptional points or rings, we find that nodal objects in non-Hermitian systems are generically displaced in momentum-space due to interactions. This in turn can be connected to the fact that exceptional points invariably break a class of orthonormal symmetries that are generally present for nodal points in Hermitian systems, and which protect the integrity of the node at low energy scales.
We show how generic non-Hermitian tight-binding lattice models can be realized in an unconditional, quantum-mechanically consistent manner by constructing an appropriate open quantum system. We focus on the quantum steady states of such models for both fermionic and bosonic systems. Surprisingly, key features and spatial structures in the steady state cannot be simply understood from the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian alone. Using the 1D Hatano-Nelson model as a paradigmatic example, we show that the steady state has a marked sensitivity to boundary conditions. This dependence however is qualitativ…
We introduce non-Hermitian generalizations of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) which appear in the topological phase of a weakly dissipative Kitaev chain coupled to a Markovian bath. Notably, the presence of MZMs ensures that the steady state in the absence of decoherence events is two-fold degenerate. Within a stochastic wavefunction approach, the effective Hamiltonian governing the coherent, non-unitary dynamics retains BDI classification of the closed limit, but belongs to one of four non-Hermitian "flavors" of the ten-fold way. We argue for the stability of MZMs due to a generalization of partic…
Quantized response is one distinguishing feature of a topological system. In non-Hermitian systems, the spectral winding topology yields quantized steady-state response. By considering two weakly coupled non-Hermitian chains, we discover that the spectral winding topology of one chain can be probed by a steady-state response defined solely on the other chain, even when other important properties, e.g., {energetics} and entanglement entropy, indicate that eigen-solutions are effectively {not hybridized} between the two chains. This intriguing phenomenon, as carefully investigated in a large par…
Steady-state observables, such as occupation numbers and currents, are crucial experimental signatures in open quantum systems. The time-convolutionless (TCL) master equation, which is both exact and time-local, is an ideal candidate for the perturbative computation of such observables. We develop a diagrammatic approach to evaluate the steady-state TCL generator based on operators rather than superoperators. We obtain the steady-state occupation numbers, extend our formulation to the calculation of currents, and provide a simple physical interpretation of the diagrams. We further benchmark ou…
In this work we study many-body 'steady states' that arise in the non-Hermitian generalisation of the non-interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model at a finite density of fermions. We find that the hitherto known phase diagrams for this system, derived from the single-particle gap closings, in fact correspond to distinct non-equilibrium phases, which either carry finite currents or are dynamical insulators where particles are entrapped. Each of these have distinct quasi-particle excitations and steady state correlations and entanglement properties. Looking at finite-sized systems, we further modu…
A non-Hermitian Chern insulator with gain/loss-type non-Hermiticity shows a peculiar gap closing; when a nontrivial Chern insulator phase changes to a gapless phase, conduction and valence bands are combined into one band owing to destabilization of chiral edge states. A previous recipe of non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence is insufficient for this system since such a gap closing is beyond its scope. Here, we revise the recipe by taking the peculiar gap closing into account and apply it to the non-Hermitian Chern insulator. We demonstrate that the bulk-boundary correspondence holds in …
We study topological properties of one-dimensional non-Hermitian systems without chiral symmetry and give phase diagrams characterized by topological invariants $ν_E$ and $ν_{total}$, associated with complex energy vorticity and summation of Berry phases of complex bands, respectively. In the absence of chiral symmetry, we find that the phase diagram determined by $ν_E$ is different from $ν_{tot}$. While the transition between phases with different $ν_{E}$ is closely related to the band-touching point, the transition between different $ν_{tot}$ is irrelevant to the band-touching condition. We …
In this work, we investigate the quantum phase transition in a non-Hermitian XY spin chain. The phase diagram shows that the critical points of Ising phase transition expand into a critical transition zone after introducing a non-Hermitian effect. By analyzing the non-Hermitian gap and long-range correlation function, one can distinguish different phases by means of different gap features and decay properties of correlation function, a tricky problem in traditional XY model. Furthermore, the results reveal the relationship among different regions of the phase diagram, non-Hermitian energy gap …
Non-unitary quantum mechanics has been used in the past to study irreversibility, dissipation and decay in a variety of physical systems. In this letter, we propose a general scheme to deal with systems governed by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We argue that the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism gives a natural description for those problems. To elucidate the method, we study a simple model inspired by mesoscopic physics --an asymmetric junction. The system is governed by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian which captures essential aspects of irreversibility.
We study the properties of an array of QED-cavities coupled by nonlinear elements in the presence of photon leakage and driven by a coherent source. The main effect of the nonlinear couplings is to provide an effective cross-Kerr interaction between nearest-neighbor cavities. Additionally, correlated photon hopping between neighboring cavities arises. We provide a detailed mean-field analysis of the steady-state phase diagram as a function of the system parameters, the leakage, and the external driving, and show the emergence of a number of different quantum phases. A photon crystal associated…
We investigate the roles of non-Hermitian topology in spectral properties and entanglement structures of open systems. In terms of spectral theory, we give a unified understanding of two interpretations of non-Hermitian topology: quantum anomaly and non-Hermitian skin effects, in which the bulk spectra extremely depend on the boundary conditions. In this context, the fact that the intrinsic higher-dimensional skin effects under the full open boundary condition need the presence of the topological defects is understood in terms of the anomalous fermion production such as the Rubakov-Callan effe…
A chiral-coupled atomic chain of two-level quantum emitters allows strong resonant dipole-dipole interactions, which enables significant collective couplings between every other emitters. We numerically obtain the steady-state phase diagram of such system under weak excitations, where interaction-driven states of crystalline orders, edge or hole excitations, and dichotomy of chiral flow are identified. We distinguish these phases by participation ratios and structure factors, and find two critical points which relate to decoherence-free subradiant sectors of the system. We further investigate …
The accurate simulation of real--time quantum transport is notoriously difficult, requiring a consistent scheme to treat incoming and outgoing fluxes at the boundary of an open system. We demonstrate a method to converge non--equilibrium steady states using non--Hermitian source and sink potentials alongside the application of dynamic density constraints during wavefunction propagation. This scheme adds negligible cost to existing computational methods while exhibiting exceptional stability and numerical accuracy.
The bulk-boundary correspondence is among the central issues of non-Hermitian topological states. We show that a previously overlooked `non-Hermitian skin effect' necessitates redefinition of topological invariants in a generalized Brillouin zone. The resultant phase diagrams dramatically differ from the usual Bloch theory. Specifically, we obtain the phase diagram of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, whose topological zero modes are determined by the non-Bloch winding number instead of the Bloch-Hamiltonian-based topological number. Our work settles the issue of the breakdown of conve…
Non-Hermitian systems exhibit striking exceptions from the paradigmatic bulk-boundary correspondence, including the failure of bulk Bloch band invariants in predicting boundary states and the (dis)appearance of boundary states at parameter values far from those corresponding to gap closings in periodic systems without boundaries. Here, we provide a comprehensive framework to unravel this disparity based on the notion of biorthogonal quantum mechanics: While the properties of the left and right eigenstates corresponding to boundary modes are individually decoupled from the bulk physics in non-H…
We demonstrate that genuinely non-Hermitian topological phases and corresponding topological phase transitions can be naturally realized in monitored quantum circuits, exemplified by the paradigmatic non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We emulate this model by a 1D chain of spinless electrons evolving under unitary dynamics and subject to periodic measurements that are stochastically invoked. The non-Hermitian topology is visible in topological invariants adapted to the context of monitored circuits. For instance, the topological phase diagram of the monitored realization of the non-Herm…
We consider a 3-dimensional (3D) non-Hermitian exceptional line semimetal model and take open boundary conditions in x, y, and z directions separately. In each case, we calculate the parameter regions where the bulk-boundary correspondence is broken. The breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence is manifested by the deviation from unit circles of generalized Brillouin zones (GBZ) and the discrepancy between spectra calculated with open boundary conditions (OBC) and periodic boundary conditions (PBC). The consistency between OBC and PBC spectra can be recovered if the PBC spectra are calcul…
The relation between chiral edge modes and bulk Chern numbers of quantum Hall insulators is a paradigmatic example of bulk-boundary correspondence. We show that the chiral edge modes are not strictly tied to the Chern numbers defined by a non-Hermitian Bloch Hamiltonian. This breakdown of conventional bulk-boundary correspondence stems from the non-Bloch-wave behavior of eigenstates (non-Hermitian skin effect), which generates pronounced deviations of phase diagrams from the Bloch theory. We introduce non-Bloch Chern numbers that faithfully predict the numbers of chiral edge modes. The theory …
We investigate novel features of three dimensional non-Hermitian Weyl semimetals, paying special attention to its unconventional bulk-boundary correspondence. We use the non-Bloch Chern numbers as the tool to obtain the topological phase diagram, which is also confirmed by the energy spectra from our numerical results. It is shown that, in sharp contrast to Hermitian systems, the conventional (Bloch) bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down in non-Hermitian topological semimetals, which is caused by the non-Hermitian skin effect. We establish the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence for non-…
In a recent experiment [Vochezer {\it et al.,} Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{120}, 073602 (2018)], a novel kind of hybrid atom-opto-mechanical system has been realized by coupling atoms in a lattice to a membrane. While such system promises a viable contender in the competitive field of simulating non-equilibrium many-body physics, its complete steady-state phase diagram is still lacking. Here we study the phase diagram of this hybrid system based on an atomic Bose-Hubbard model coupled to a quantum harmonic oscillator. We take both the expectation value of the bosonic operator and the mechanical m…
We calculate steady-state properties of a strongly correlated quantum dot under voltage bias by means of non-equilibrium Cluster Perturbation Theory and the non-equilibrium Variational Cluster Approach, respectively. Results for the steady-state current are benchmarked against data from accurate Matrix Product State based time evolution. We show that for low to medium interaction strength, non-equilibrium Cluster Perturbation Theory already yields good results, while for higher interaction strength the self-consistent feedback of the non-equilibrium Variational Cluster Approach significantly e…
We address the breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence observed in non-Hermitian systems, where open and periodic systems can have distinct phase diagrams. The correspondence can be completely restored by considering the Hamiltonian's singular value decomposition instead of its eigendecomposition. This leads to a natural topological description in terms of a flattened singular decomposition. This description is equivalent to the usual approach for Hermitian systems and coincides with a recent proposal for the classification of non-Hermitian systems. We generalize the notion of the entang…
The simulation of quantum transport in a realistic, many-particle system is a nontrivial problem with no quantitatively satisfactory solution. While real-time propagation has the potential to overcome the shortcomings of conventional transport methods, this approach is prone to finite size effects that are associated with modeling an open system on a closed spatial domain. Using a master equation framework, we exploit an equivalence between the superoperators coupling an open system to external particle reservoirs and non-Hermitian terms defined at the periphery of a quantum device. By taking …
An Attempt is made to study the non-Hermitian effect on the topological quantum criticality and also in the physics of Majroana zero mode (MZMs). In this work, the effects and modifications done by the non-Hermitian factor $γ$ on the topological phases, criticality and also in the MZMs is studied. We use the zero mode solutions (ZMS) to construct the phase diagram. We find a correspondence between Hermitian and non-Hermitian model Hamiltonian. The MZMs appear at criticality and has a stability dependence on the new passage created because of the introduction of non-Hermiticity. The multicritic…
The breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence in non-Hermitian (NH) topological systems is an open, controversial issue. In this paper, to resolve this issue, we ask the following question: Can a (global) topological invariant completely describe the topological properties of a NH system as its Hermitian counterpart? Our answer is no. One cannot use a global topological invariant (including non-Bloch topological invariant) to accurately characterize the topological properties of the NH systems. Instead, there exist a new type of topological invariants that are absence in its Hermitian coun…
A scenario of non-Hermitian bulk--boundary correspondence proposed for one-dimensional topological insulators is adapted to a non-Hermitian Chern insulator to examine its applicability to two-dimensional systems. This scenario employs bulk geometry under a modified periodic boundary condition and boundary geometry under an open boundary condition. The bulk geometry is used to define a topological number, whereas the boundary geometry is used to observe the presence or absence of a topological boundary state. It is demonstrated that the bulk--boundary correspondence holds in a two-dimensional C…
Topological states of matter in non-Hermitian systems have attracted a lot of attention due to their intriguing dynamical and transport properties. In this study, we propose a periodically driven non-Hermitian lattice model in one-dimension, which features rich Floquet topological phases. The topological phase diagram of the model is derived analytically. Each of its non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases is characterized by a pair of integer winding numbers, counting the number of real 0- and π-quasienergy edge states at the boundaries of the lattice. Non-Hermiticity induced Floquet topolog…
Recently, many novel and exotic phases have been proposed by considering the role of topology in non-Hermitian systems, and their emergent properties are of wide current interest. In this work we propose the non-Hermitian generalization of semi-Dirac semimetals, which feature a linear dispersion along one momentum direction and a quadratic one along the other. We study the topological phase transitions in such two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetals in the presence of a particle gain-and-loss term. We show that such a non-Hermitian term creates exceptional points originating out of each semi-Dir…
The multipartite non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model is explored as a prototypical example of one-dimensional systems with several sublattice sites for unveiling intriguing insulating and metallic phases with no Hermitian counterparts. These phases are characterized by composite cyclic loops of multiple complex-energy bands encircling single or multiple exceptional points (EPs) on the parametric space of real and imaginary energy. We show the topology of these composite loops is similar to well-known topological objects like Möbius strips and Penrose triangles, and can be quantified by a …
As a hallmark of pure quantum effect, quantum entanglement has provided unconventional routes to condensed matter systems. Here, from the perspective of quantum entanglement, we disclose exotic quantum physics in non-Hermitian quasicrystals. We present a class of experimentally realizable models for non-Hermitian quasicrystal chains, in which asymmetric hopping and complex potential coexist. We diagnose global phase diagram by means of entanglement from both real-space and momentum-space partition. By measuring entanglement entropy, we numerically determine the metal-insulator transition point…
Recent studies of disorder or non-Hermiticity induced topological insulators inject new ingredients for engineering topological matter. Here we consider the effect of purely non-Hermitian disorders, a combination of these two ingredients, in a 1D coupled-cavity array with disordered gain and loss. Topological photonic states can be induced by increasing gain-loss disorder strength with topological invariants carried by localized states in the complex bulk spectra. The system showcases rich phase diagrams and distinct topological states from Hermitian disorders. The non-Hermitian critical behav…
We consider a class of one-dimensional non-Hermitian models with a special type of a chiral symmetry which is related to pseudo-Hermiticity. We show that the topology of a Hamiltonian belonging to this symmetry class is determined by a hidden Chern number described by an effective 2D Hermitian Hamiltonian $H^{\rm eff} (k, η)$, where $η$ is the imaginary part of the energy. This Chern number manifests itself as topologically protected in-gap end states at zero real part of the energy. We show that the bulk-boundary correspondence coming from the hidden Chern number is robust and immune to non-H…
We predict the existence of non-Hermitian topologically protected end states in a one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensate lattice, where topological transitions are driven by the laser pump pattern. We show that the number of end states can be described by a Chern number and a topological invariant based on the Wilson loop. We find that such transitions arise due to {\it enforced exceptional points} which can be predicted directly from the bulk Bloch wave functions. This allows us to establish a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence for non-Hermitian systems and to compute the phase di…
