Allotropes of carbon, such as diamond and graphene, are among the best conductors of heat. We monitored the evolution of thermal conductivity in thin graphite as a function of temperature and thickness and found an intimate link between high conductivity, thickness, and phonon hydrodynamics. The room temperature in-plane thermal conductivity of 8.5-micrometer-thick graphite was 4300 watts per meter-kelvin-a value well above that for diamond and slightly larger than in isotopically purified graphene. Warming enhances thermal diffusivity across a wide temperature range, supporting partially hydrodynamic phonon flow. The enhancement of thermal conductivity that we observed with decreasing thickness points to a correlation between the out-of-plane momentum of phonons and the fraction of momentum relaxing collisions. We argue that this is due to the extreme phonon dispersion anisotropy in graphite.
Trying to dope graphite flakes we found that the magnetization of pure, several tens of micrometers grain size graphite powder and after a simple treatment with pure water shows clear and reproducible granular superconducting behavior with a critical temperature above 300K. The observed magnetic characteristics as a function of temperature, magnetic field and time, provide evidence for weakly coupled grains through Josephson interaction, revealing the existence of superconducting vortices.
We develop a new chemical route to prepare carbon nanotubes at room temperature. Graphite powder is immersed in a mixed solution of nitric and sulfuric acid with potassium chlorate. After heating the solution up to 70°C and leaving them in the air for 3 days, we obtained carbon nanotube bundles. This process could provide an easy and inexpensive method for the preparation of carbon nanotubes.
We report the chemical synthesis route, structural characterization, and physical properties of nanofluid magnetic graphite (NFMG) obtained from the previously synthesized bulk organic magnetic graphite (MG) by stabilizing the aqueous ferrofluid suspension with an addition of active cationic surfactant. The measured magnetization-field hysteresis curves along with the temperature dependence of magnetization confirmed room-temperature ferromagnetism in both MG and NFMG samples.
We present a x-ray dichroism study of graphite surfaces that addresses the origin and magnitude of ferromagnetism in metal-free carbon. We find that, in addition to carbon $π$ states, also hydrogen-mediated electronic states exhibit a net spin polarization with significant magnetic remanence at room temperature. The observed magnetism is restricted to the top $\approx$10 nm of the irradiated sample where the actual magnetization reaches $ \simeq 15$ emu/g at room temperature. We prove that the ferromagnetism found in metal-free untreated graphite is intrinsic and has a similar origin as the on…
The search for macroscopic magnetic ordering phenomena in organic materials, in particular in pure graphite, has been one of the more exciting scientific activities working in the frontiers of physics, chemistry, and materials science. In this Letter we report on a novel chemical route leading to undoubtedly obtain macroscopic quantities of magnetic graphite. This material has a stable and strong ferromagnetic response even at room temperature where it can be attracted by a commercial magnet. We have obtained this magnetic graphite by a vapor reaction consisting of a controlled etching on the …
Ferromagnetism in carbon-based materials is appealing for both applications and fundamental science purposes because carbon is a light and bio-compatible material that contains only s and p electrons in contrast to traditional ferromagnets based on 3d or 4f electrons. Here we demonstrate direct evidence for ferromagnetic order locally at defect structures in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) with magnetic force microscopy and in bulk magnetization measurements at room temperature. Magnetic impurities have been excluded as the origin of the magnetic signal after careful analysis support…
Carbon materials are attracting increasing attention due to the novelty of the associated physical properties and the potential applications in high-tech devices. The possibility to achieve outstanding properties in macroscopic carbon materials opens up a profusion of new striking applications. Magnetic properties induced by defects on graphite structures, such as pores, edges of the planes and topological defects, have been theoretically predicted. The possible coexistence of sp3 and sp2 bonds have been also invoked to predict this behavior (for a review, see ref. 1). Some reports have proved…
Recently, Liu et al. reported that Ti2CTx MXene have ultra-high hydrogen storage capacity (8.8 wt.%) at room temperature. For the purpose to clearly understand the hydrogen storage (H-storage), the composition of studied samples should be clearly characterized and the H-storage structure need be explored. To achieve 8.8 wt.% capacity, 3 layers of H2 molecules need be stored in the interlayer space of MXene with the structure of Ti2CF2H14. The H2 layers with graphene-like 2D structure are in solid/liquid state at room temperature, which is significant in the explore new materials with surprisin…
This paper reports the synthesis and detailed characterization of graphite thin films produced by thermal decomposition of the (0001) face of a 6H-SiC wafer, demonstrating the successful growth of single crystalline films down to approximately one graphene layer. The growth and characterization were carried out in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. The growth process and sample quality were monitored by low-energy electron diffraction, and the thickness of the sample was determined by core level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows c…
The intrinsic values of the carriers mobility and density of the graphene layers inside graphite, the well known structure built on these layers in the Bernal stacking configuration, are not well known mainly because most of the research was done in rather bulk samples where lattice defects hide their intrinsic values. By measuring the electrical resistance through microfabricated constrictions in micrometer small graphite flakes of a few tens of nanometers thickness we studied the ballistic behavior of the carriers. We found that the carriers' mean free path is micrometer large with a mobilit…
Highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) is an inert substrate with a structural honeycomb lattice, well suited for the growth of two-dimensional (2D) silicene layer. It was reported that when Si atoms are deposited on HOPG surface at room temperature, they arrange in two configurations: silicene nanosheets and three dimensional clusters. In this work we demonstrate, by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and Raman spectroscopy, that a third configuration stabilizes in the form of Si 2D nanosheets intercalated below the first top layer of carbon atoms. The Raman spectra reveal a structu…
The micro-Raman scattering response of a graphene-like location on the surface of bulk natural graphite is investigated both at $T=\unit{4.2}{K}$ and at room temperature in magnetic fields up to 29 T. Two different polarization configurations, co-circular and crossed-circular, are employed in order to determine the Raman scattering selection rules. Several distinct series of electronic excitations are observed and we discuss their characteristic shapes and amplitudes. In particular, we report a clear splitting of the signals associated with the inter-Landau level excitations $-n\rightarrow+n$.…
We demonstrate the formation of semimetal graphite/semiconductor Schottky barriers where the semiconductor is either silicon (Si), gallium arsenide (GaAs) or 4H-silicon carbide (4H-SiC). Near room temperature, the forward-bias diode characteristics are well described by thermionic emission, and the extracted barrier heights, which are confirmed by capacitance voltage measurements, roughly follow the Schottky-Mott relation. Since the outermost layer of the graphite electrode is a single graphene sheet, we expect that graphene/semiconductor barriers will manifest similar behavior.
We report on unusual magnetic properties observed in the nanofluid room-temperature ferromagnetic graphite (with an average particle size of l=10nm). More precisely, the measured magnetization exhibits a low-temperature anomaly (attributed to manifestation of finite size effects below the quantum temperature) as well as pronounced temperature oscillations above T=50K (attributed to manifestation of the hard-sphere type pair correlations between ferromagnetic particles in the nanofluid).
Heat conduction in graphite has been studied for decades because of its exceptionally large thermal anisotropy. While the bulk thermal conductivities along the in-plane and cross-plane directions are well known, less understood are the microscopic properties of the thermal phonons responsible for heat conduction. In particular, recent experimental and computational works indicate that the average phonon mean free path (MFP) along the c-axis is considerably larger than that estimated by kinetic theory, but the distribution of MFPs remains unknown. Here, we report the first quantitative measurem…
Here we report on the preparation of transparent and flexible polymerized graphite oxide, which is composed of carbons with sp3-hybridized orbitals and a non-planar ring structure, and which demonstrates dispersion in its dielectric constant at room temperature. This frequency dependence renders the material suitable for creating miniaturized, flexible, and transparent variable capacitors, allowing for smaller and simpler integrated electronic devices. We discuss this polarizability in terms of space charge effects.
We investigate the optical properties of bromine intercalated highly orientated pyrolytic graphite (Br-HOPG) and provide a novel interpretation of the data. We observe new absorption features below 620 meV which are absent in the absorption spectrum of graphite. Comparing our results with those of theoretical studies on graphite, single and bilayer graphene as well as recent optical studies of multilayer graphene, we conclude that Br-HOPG contains the signatures of ultrapure bilayer, single layer graphene, and graphite. The observed supermetallic conductivity of Br-HOPG is identified with the …
We report on the temperature dependence of the anharmonic decay rate of zone-center (G mode) optical phonons in both single-walled carbon nanotubes and graphite. The measurements are performed using a pump-probe Raman scattering scheme with femtosecond laser pulses. For nanotubes, measured over a temperature range of 6 K-700 K, we observe little temperature dependence of the decay rate below room temperature. Above 300 K, the decay rate increases from 0.8 to 1.7 ps-1. The decay rates observed for graphite range from 0.5 to 0.8 ps-1 for temperatures from 300 K-700 K. We compare the behavior obs…
It is a long-time pursuit of computations with \emph{ab initio} precision of thermal contributions to phase behaviors of condensed matters under extreme conditions. In this work, the pressure induced structural phase transitions of crystalline aluminum up to $600$ GPa at room temperature are investigated based on the criterion of Gibbs free energy derived directly from the partition function that formulated in the ensemble theory with the interatomic interactions characterized by density functional theory computations. The transition pressures of the FCC$\rightarrow$HCP$\rightarrow$BCC phase t…
Discovering new materials with ultrahigh thermal conductivity has been a critical research frontier and driven by many important technological applications ranging from thermal management to energy science. Here we have rigorously investigated the fundamental lattice vibrational spectra in ternary compounds and determined the thermal conductivity using a predictive ab initio approach. Phonon transport in B-X-C (X = N, P, As) groups is systematically quantified with different crystal structures and high-order anharmonicity involving a four-phonon process. Our calculation found an ultrahigh room…
Semi-metals might offer a stronger interaction and a better confinement for terahertz wave than semiconductors, while preserve tunability. Particularly, graphene-based materials are envisioned as terahertz modulators, filters and ultra-broadband sources. However, the understanding of terahertz generation from those materials is still not clear, thus limits us recognizing the potential and improving device performances. Graphite, the mother material of graphene and a typical bulk semi-metal, is a good system to study semi-metals and graphene-based materials. Here we experimentally modulate and …
The defect induced interfacial states are created in an atomically thin two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide channel by underlying a narrow pattern of a graphene layer in a field effect transistor. Nondestructive method for the generation of charge-state allowed a highly sensitive molecular interaction with the sensitivity of nearly three-order of magnitude at room temperature. The presence of interfacial states in the channel lead to a conductance fluctuation and its magnitude is modulated using the nitrogen dioxide gas molecules in the subthreshold region. The study provides a systematic app…
A sheared microscopic graphite mesa retracts spontaneously to minimize interfacial energy. Using an optical knife-edge technique, we report comparative measurements of the speeds of such self-retracting motion (SRM) in air and low vacuum (about 1 Pa). We found that the retracting speed Vm of SRM is almost the same in the two environments at both room temperature and high temperature (above 150 celsius degree). We also extract the acceleration of the SRM, and found some typical behaviors. In the high speed range (above 5 m/s), the acceleration decreases linearly with the logarithm of the SRM sp…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy have been applied to study the intercalation process of silver underneath a monolayer of graphite (MG) on Ni(111). The room-temperature deposition of silver on top of MG/Ni(111) system leads to the islands-like growth of Ag on top of the MG. Annealing of the "as-deposited" system at temperature of 350-450 C results in the intercalation of about 1-2 ML of Ag underneath MG on Ni(111) independently of the thickness of pre-deposited Ag film (3-100 A). The intercalation of Ag is followed by a shift of the graphite-derived val…
We report the structural and optical properties of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown 2-dimensional (2D) material molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) on graphite, CaF2 and epitaxial graphene. Extensive characterizations reveal that 2H- MoSe2 grows by van-der-Waals epitaxy on all 3 substrates with a preferred crystallographic orientation and a Mo:Se ratio of 1:2. Photoluminescence at room temperature (~1.56 eV) is observed in monolayer MoSe2 on both CaF2 and epitaxial graphene. The band edge absorption is very sharp, <60 meV over 3 decades. Overcoming the observed small grains by promoting mobility o…
The fabrication of electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) with high areal capacitance relies on the use of elevated mass loadings of highly porous active materials. Herein, we demonstrate a high-throughput manufacturing of graphene/nanotubes hybrid EDLCs. Wet-jet milling (WJM) method is exploited to exfoliate the graphite into single/few-layer graphene flakes (WJM-G) in industrial volume (production rate ~0.5 kg/day). Commercial single/double walled carbon nanotubes (SDWCNTs) are mixed with graphene flakes in order to act as spacers between the graphene flakes during their film format…
Developing applicable two-dimensional (2D) electrode materials with high performance, especially with high ion storage capacity, has become an ever more obsessive quest in recent years. Based on first-principles calculations, we report that T-graphene, a new carbon-based 2D material, has a record-high Li/Na storage capacity. The capacity of T-graphene is as high as 2233.2 mA h g-1 for Li, and can reach 2357.2 mA h g-1 for Na, which are 6 times as much as that of the commercial graphite and are the highest among 2D anode materials identified so far. We demonstrate that the ultrahigh storage cap…
The structural, dynamical, and thermodynamical properties of diamond, graphite and layered derivatives (graphene, rhombohedral graphite) are computed using a combination of density-functional theory (DFT) total-energy calculations and density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT) lattice dynamics at the GGA-PBE level. Overall, very good agreement is found for the structural properties and phonon dispersions, with the exception of the c/a ratio in graphite and the associated elastic constants and phonon dispersions. Both the C_33 elastic constant and the Gamma to A phonon dispersions are brough…
Graphite, with many industrial applications, is one of the widely sought-after allotropes of carbon. The sp2 hybridized and thermodynamically stable form of carbon forms a layered structure with strong in-plane carbon bonds and weak inter-layer van der Waals bonding. Graphite is also a high-temperature ceramic, and shaping them into complex geometries is challenging, given its limited sintering behavior even at high temperatures. Although the geometric design of the graphite structure in many of the applications could dictate its precision performance, conventional synthesis methods for formul…

Engineering materials with high thermal conductivity are of fundamental interest for efficiently dissipating heat in micro/nanoelectronics. Using first principles computations we report an ultra-high thermal conductivity of 2090 Wm-1K-1 (1395 Wm-1K-1) for hexagonal pure (natural) BC6N(h-BC6N). This value is among the highest thermal conductivities known after diamond and cubic boron arsenide. This ultra-high lattice thermal conductivity (k) is mainly attributed with high phonon group velocities of both acoustic and optical phonons arising from strong C-C and B-N bonds as well as the light atom…
Two-dimensional molybdenum disulphide on graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition is a promising van der Waals system for applications in optoelectronics and catalysis. To extend the fundamental understanding of growth and intrinsic properties of molybdenum disulphide on graphene, molybdenum disulphide on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite is a suitable model system. Here we show, experimentally and by density-functional-theory calculations, that molybdenum disulphide flakes grow in two orientations. One of the orientations is energetically preferred, the other one is rotated by 30 degree.…
Ubiquitous graphene is a stricly 2D material representing an ideal adsorbing platform due to its large specific surface area as well as its mechanical strength and resistance to both thermal and chemical stresses. However, graphene as a bulk material has the tendency to form irreversible agglomerates leading to 3D graphitic structures with a significant decrease of the area available for adsorption and no room for gas intercalation. In this paper a novel nanoporous graphite formed by graphtriyne sheets is introduced: its 3D structure is theoretically assessed by means of electronic structure a…
The electrical resistance of detonation nano-diamond powders was measured from liquid nitrogen temperature to room temperature and in relative humidity environments from around 10% to 100%. After sample exposures of several hours at 100% relative humidity at room temperature (around 295 K), when the temperature was reduced, the resistance increased to the upper measurement limit of our apparatus (120 MΩ) at around 240 K. Upon warming, the resistance dropped back to the room temperature value, with some hysteresis. For sample exposures after several hours at 100% relative humidity at room tempe…
Search for new high-temperature superconductors and insight into their superconducting mechanism are of fundamental importance in condensed matter physics. The discovery of near-room temperature superconductivity at more than a million atmospheres ushers in a new era for superconductors. However, the critical task of identifying materials with comparable superconductivity at near or ambient pressure remains. Carbon materials can always lead to intriguing surprises due to their structural diversity and electronic adjustability. Insulating diamond upon doping or external stimuli has achieved sup…
There has been a lot of excitement around the observation of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene, associated to flat bands close to the Fermi level. Such correlated electronic states also occur in multilayer rhombohedral stacked graphene (RG), which has been receiving increasing attention in the last years. In both natural and artificial samples however, multilayer stacked Bernal graphene (BG) occurs more frequently, making it desirable to determine what is their relative stability and under which conditions RG might be favored. Here, we study the energetics of BG and RG in bulk and …
Excitons in semiconductors are usually non interacting and behave like an ideal gas, but may condense to a strongly correlated liquid like state, i.e. electron hole liquid (EHL), at high density and appropriate temperature. EHL is a macroscopic quantum state with exotic properties and represents the ultimate attainable charge excitation density in steady states. It bears great promise for a variety of fields such as ultrahigh power photonics and quantum science and technology. However, the condensation of gas like excitons to EHL has often been restricted to cryogenic temperatures, which signi…
The realization of long-range magnetic ordering in two-dimensional (2D) systems can potentially revolutionize next-generation information technology. Here, we report the successful fabrication of crystalline Cr3Te4 monolayers with room temperature ferromagnetism. Using molecular beam epitaxy, the growth of 2D Cr3Te4 films with monolayer thickness is demonstrated at low substrate temperatures (~100C), compatible with Si CMOS technology. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal a Curie temperature (Tc) of ~344 K for the Cr3Te4 monolayer with an out-of-plane magnetic easy axis, which…
Si(100) surfaces were prepared by wet-chemical etching followed by 0.3-1.5keV Ar ion sputtering, either at elevated or room temperature. After a brief anneal under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, the resulting surfaces were examined by scanning tunneling microscopy. We find that wet-chemical etching alone cannot produce a clean and flat Si(100) surface. However, subsequent 300eV Ar ion sputtering at room temperature followed by a 973K anneal yields atomically clean and flat Si(100) surfaces suitable for nanoscale device fabrication.
Topological semimetal may have potential applications like topological qubits, spintronics and quantum computations. Efficient heat dissipation is a key factor for the reliability and stability of topological semimetal-based nano-electronics devices, which is closely related to high thermal conductivity. In this work, the elastic properties and lattice thermal conductivity of TaN are investigated by first-principles calculations and the linearized phonon Boltzmann equation within the single-mode relaxation time approximation (RTA). According to the calculated bulk modulus, shear modulus and $C…
Graphene is an intriguing material with properties that are distinct from those of other graphitic systems. The first samples of pristine graphene were obtained by peeling off and epitaxial growth. Recently, the chemical reduction of graphite oxide was used to produce covalently functionalized single-layer graphene oxide. However, chemical approaches for the large-scale production of highly conducting graphene sheets remain elusive. Here, we report that the exfoliation-reintercalation-expansion of graphite can produce high-quality single-layer graphene sheets stably suspended in organic solven…
The ultrahigh thermal conductivity of boron arsenide makes it a promising material for next-generation electronics and optoelectronics. In this work, we report measured optical properties of cubic boron arsenide crystals including the complex dielectric function, refractive index, and absorption coefficient in the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelength range. The data were collected at room temperature using spectroscopic ellipsometry as well as transmission and reflection spectroscopy. We further calculate the optical response using density functional and many-body perturbation th…
Self-assembled monolayers of 1,3,5-tris(4'-biphenyl-4"-carbonitrile)benzene, a large functional trinitrile molecule, on the (111) surfaces of copper and silver under ultrahigh vacuum conditions were studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and low-energy electron diffraction. A densely packed hydrogen-bonded polymorph was equally observed on both surfaces. Additionally, deposition onto Cu(111) yielded a well-ordered metal-coordinated porous polymorph that coexisted with the hydrogen-bonded structure. The required coordination centers were supplied by the adatom gas of the Cu(111) surface. On A…
Combining equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations with accurate carbon potentials, we determine the thermal conductivity $λ$ of carbon nanotubes and its dependence on temperature. Our results suggest an unusually high value $λ{\approx}6,600$~W/m$\cdot$K for an isolated (10,10) nanotube at room temperature, comparable to the thermal conductivity of a hypothetical isolated graphene monolayer or diamond. Our results suggest that these high values of $λ$ are associated with the large phonon mean free paths in these systems; substantially lower values are predicted and observ…
The possibility to induce long range ferromagnetic order by doping oxides with transition metal ions has become a very exciting challenge in the last decade. Theoretically, it has been claimed that Mn doped ZrO$_2$ could be a very promising spintronic candidate and that high critical temperatures could be already achieved even for a low Mn concentration. Some experiments have reported room temperature ferromagnetism (RT-FM) whilst some others only paramagnetism. When observed, the nature of RT-FM appears to be controversial and not clearly understood. In this study, we propose to clarify and s…
The ability to control electronic properties of a material by externally applied voltage is at the heart of modern electronics. In many cases, it is the so-called electric field effect that allows one to vary the carrier concentration in a semiconductor device and, consequently, change an electric current through it. As the semiconductor industry is nearing the limits of performance improvements for the current technologies dominated by silicon, there is a constant search for new, non-traditional materials whose properties can be controlled by electric field. Most notable examples of such mate…
Patterned graphene shows substantial potential for applications in future molecular-scale integrated electronics. Environmental effects are a critical issue in a single layer material where every atom is on the surface. Especially intriguing is the variety of rich chemical interactions shown by molecular oxygen with aromatic molecules. We find that O2 etching kinetics vary strongly with the number of graphene layers in the sample. Three-layer-thick samples show etching similar to bulk natural graphite. Single-layer graphene reacts faster and shows random etch pits in contrast to natural graphi…
