The defect induced interfacial states are created in an atomically thin two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide channel by underlying a narrow pattern of a graphene layer in a field effect transistor. Nondestructive method for the generation of charge-state allowed a highly sensitive molecular interaction with the sensitivity of nearly three-order of magnitude at room temperature. The presence of interfacial states in the channel lead to a conductance fluctuation and its magnitude is modulated using the nitrogen dioxide gas molecules in the subthreshold region. The study provides a systematic approach to establish a correlation between modulated conductance fluctuation and the molecular concentration upto parts-per-billion. First-principles density functional theory further explains the role of unique interfacial configuration on conductance fluctuation. Therefore, our study demonstrates an experimental approach to induce charge-state for the modulation of carrier concentration and exploits the role of defect induced interfacial states in atomically thin interfaces for the molecular interaction.
Well-known effect of mechanical stiffness degradation under the influence of point defects in macroscopic solids can be controversially reversed in the case of low-dimensional materials. Using atomistic simulation, we showed here that a single-layered graphene film can be sufficiently stiffened by monovacancy defects at a tiny concentration. Our results correspond well with recent experimental data and suggest that the effect of mechanical stiffness augmentation is mainly originated from specific bonds distribution in the surrounded monovacancy defects regions. We showed that such unusual mech…
Topological defects such as magnetic solitons, vortices, Bloch lines, and skyrmions have started to play an important role in modern magnetism because of their extraordinary stability, which can be exploited in the production of memory devices. Recently, a novel type of antisymmetric exchange interaction, namely the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), has been uncovered and found to influence the formation of topological defects. Exploring how the DMI affects the dynamics of topological defects is therefore an important task. Here we investigate the dynamic domain wall (DW) under a strong…
Position-sensitive-detectors (PSDs) based on lateral photoeffect has been widely used in diverse applications, including optical engineering, aerospace and military fields. With increasing demand in long distance, low energy consumption, and weak signal sensing systems, the poor responsivity of conventional PSDs has become a bottleneck limiting its applications. Herein, we present a high performance graphene based PSDs with revolutionary interfacial amplification mechanism. Signal amplification in the order of ~10^4 has been demonstrated by utilizing the ultrahigh mobility of graphene and long…
Graphene quality indicators obtained by Raman spectroscopy have been correlated to the structural changes of the graphene/Germanium interface as a function of in-vacuum thermal annealing. Specifically, it is found that graphene becomes markedly defected at 650 °C. By combining scanning tunneling microscopy, x-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Near Edge x-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy, we conclude that these defects are due to the release of H_{2} gas trapped at the graphene/Germanium interface. The H_{2} gas was produced following the transition from the as-grown hydrogen-termina…
This paper is devoted mainly to mathematical aspects of modeling and simulation of tunnel relaxation of nonequilibrium charged oxide traps located at/near the interface insulator - conductive channel, for instance in irradiated MOS devices. The generic form of the tunnel annealing response function was derived from the rate equation for the charged defect buildup and annealing as a linear superposition of the responses of different defects with different time constants. Using this linear response function, a number of important practical problems are analyzed and discussed. Combined tunnel and…
We present a density functional study of graphene adhesion on a realistic SiO$_2$ surface taking into account van der Waals (vdW) interactions. The SiO$_2$ substrate is modeled at the local scale by using two main types of surface defects, typical for amorphous silica: the oxygen dangling bond and three-coordinated silicon. The results show that the nature of adhesion between graphene and its substrate is qualitatively dependent on the surface defect type. In particular, the interaction between graphene and silicon-terminated SiO$_2$ originates exclusively from the vdW interaction, whereas the…
Halide perovskite light absorbers have great advantages for photovoltaics such as efficient solar energy absorption, but charge accumulation and recombination at the interface with an electron transport layer (ETL) remains a major challenge in realizing their full potential. Here we report the experimental realization of a zipper-like interdigitated interface between a Pb-based halide perovskite light absorber and an oxide ETL by the PbO capping of the ETL surface, which produces an atomically thin two-dimensional metallic layer that can significantly enhance the perovskite/ETL charge extracti…
Aqueous proton transport at interfaces is ubiquitous and crucial for a number of fields, ranging from cellular transport and signaling, to catalysis and membrane science. However, due to their light mass, small size and high chemical reactivity, uncovering single proton surface transport at room temperature and in aqueous environment has so far remained out-of-reach of conventional atomic-scale surface science techniques, such as STM. Here, we use single-molecule localization microscopy techniques to resolve optically the transport of individual excess protons at the interface of hexagonal bor…
We report on a direct measurement of sizable interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) at the interface of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (2D-TMD), MoS$_{\rm 2}$ and Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (Py) using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. A clear asymmetry in spin-wave dispersion is measured in MoS$_{\rm 2}$/Py/Ta, while no such asymmetry is detected in the reference Py/Ta system. A linear scaling of the DMI constant with the inverse of Py thickness indicates the interfacial origin of the observed DMI. We further observe an enhancement of DMI constant in three to four…
Surfaces are at the frontier of every known solid. They provide versatile supports for functional nanostructures and mediate essential physicochemical processes. Being intimately related with 2D materials, interfaces and atomically thin films often feature distinct electronic states with respect to the bulk, which are key for many relevant properties, such as catalytic activity, interfacial charge-transfer, or crystal growth mechanisms. Of particular interest is reducing the surface electrons' dimensionality and spread with atomic precision, to induce novel quantum properties via lateral scatt…

The properties of metal-semiconductor junctions are often unpredictable because of non-ideal interfacial structures, such as interfacial defects or chemical reactions introduced at junctions. Black phosphorus (BP), an elemental two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting crystal, possesses the puckered atomic structure with high chemical reactivity, and the establishment of a realistic atomic-scale picture of BP's interface toward metallic contact has remained elusive. Here we examine the interfacial structures and properties of physically-deposited metals of various kinds on BP. We find that Au, Ag, …
By studying the temperature-dependent behavior of electron thermal conductivity (k) in a 3.2 nm-thin film, we quantify the extremely confined defect-electron scattering and reveal the intrinsic phonon-electron scattering that is shared by bulk Ir. At low temperatures below 50 K, the thermal conductivity of the thin film has almost two orders of magnitude reduction from that of the bulk Ir. The thermal conductivity of the film increases with increasing temperature while that of the bulk Ir has an opposite trend. We introduce a unified thermal resistivity to interpret this completely different k…
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) has recently attracted considerable interest owing to its fundamental role in the stabilization of chiral spin textures in ultrathin ferromagnets, which are interesting candidates for future spintronic technologies. Here we employ a scanning nano-magnetometer based on a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond to locally probe the strength of the interfacial DMI in CoFeB/MgO ultrathin films grown on different heavy metal underlayers X=Ta,TaN, and W. By measuring the stray field emanating from DWs in micron-long wires of such materials, we obser…
Magnetic phase transitions are a test bed for exploring the physics of non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter, which become even more complex when topological constraints are involved. In particular, the investigation of skyrmions and skyrmion lattices offers insight into fundamental processes of topological-charge creation and annihilation upon changing the magnetic state. Nonetheless, the exact physical mechanisms behind these phase transitions remain unresolved. Here, we have systematically compared ultra-thin films with isotropic and anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (D…
