A new evolution algorithm for the characteristic initial value problem based upon an affine parameter rather than the areal radial coordinate used in the Bondi-Sachs formulation is applied in the spherically symmetric case to the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field. The advantages over the Bondi-Sachs version are discussed, with particular emphasis on the application to critical collapse. Unexpected quadratures lead to a simple evolution algorithm based upon ordinary differential equations which can be integrated along the null rays. For collapse to a black hole in a Penrose compactified spacetime, these equations are regularized throughout the exterior and interior of the horizon up to the final singularity. They are implemented as a global numerical evolution code based upon the Galerkin method. New results regarding the global properties of critical collapse are presented.
We present a symmetric hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein equations in affine-null coordinates. Giannakopoulos et. al. (arXiv:2007.06419) recently showed that the most commonly numerically implemented formulations of the Einstein equations in affine-null coordinates (and other single-null coordinate systems) are only weakly-but not strongly-hyperbolic. By making use of the tetrad-based Newman-Penrose formalism, our formulation avoids the hyperbolicity problems of the formulations investigated by Giannakopoulos et. al. We discuss a potential application of our formulation for studying gravi…
The details are presented of a new evolution algorithm for the characteristic initial-boundary value problem based upon an affine parameter rather than the areal radial coordinate used in the Bondi-Sachs formulation. The advantages over the Bondi-Sachs version are discussed, with particular emphasis on the application to the characteristic extraction of the gravitational waveform from Cauchy simulations of general relativistic astrophysical systems.
We present two recently obtained solutions of the Einstein equations with spherical symmetry and one additional Killing vector, describing colliding null dust streams.
Dynamics of a null thin shell immersed in a generic spherically symmetric spacetime is obtained within the distributional formalism. It has been shown that the distributional formalism leads to the same result as in the conventional formalism.
The definition of well-behaved coordinate charts for black hole spacetimes can be tricky, as they can lead for example to either unphysical coordinate singularities in the metric (e.g. $r=2M$ in the Schwarzschild black hole) or to an implicit dependence of the chosen coordinate to physical relevant coordinates (e.g. the dependence of the null coordinates in the Kruskal metric). Here we discuss two approaches for coordinate choices in spherical symmetry allowing us to discuss explicitly "solitary" and spherically symmetric black holes from a regular horizon to null infinity. The first approach …
Geometric structure of spherically-symmetric space-time in metric-affine gauge theory of gravity is studied. Restrictions on curvature tensor and Bianchi identities are obtained. By using certain simple gravitational Lagrangian the solution of gravitational equations for vacuum spherically-symmetric gravitational field is obtained.
The Einstein equations are integrated in the presence of two (incoming and outgoing) streams of null dust, under the assumptions of spherical symmetry and staticity. The solution is also written in double null and radiation coordinates and it is reinterpreted as an anisotropic fluid. Interior matching with a static fluid and exterior matching with the Vaidya solution along null hypersurfaces is discussed. The connection with two-dimensional dilaton gravity is established.
We derive an expression for the expansion of outgoing null geodesics in spherical dust collapse and compute the limiting value of the expansion in the approach to singularity formation. An analogous expression is derived for the spherical collapse of a general form of matter. We argue on the basis of these results that the covered as well as the naked singularity solutions arising in spherical dust collapse are stable under small changes in the equation of state.
The residual gauge freedom within the null quasi-spherical coordinate condition is studied, for spacetimes admitting an expanding, shear-free null foliation. The freedom consists of a boost and rotation at each coordinate sphere, corresponding to a specification of inertial frame at each sphere. Explicit formulae involving arbitrary functions of two variables are obtained for the accelerated Minkowski, Schwarzschild, and Robinson-Trautman spacetimes. These examples will be useful as test metrics in numerical relativity.

The structure of the full Einstein equations in a coordinate gauge based on expanding null hypersurfaces foliated by metric 2-spheres is explored. The simple form of the resulting equations has many applications -- in the present paper we describe the structure of timelike boundary conditions; the matching problem across null hypersurfaces; and the propagation of gravitational shocks.
The notion of null (isotropic) vector field is considered in spaces with affine connections and metrics as models of space or space-time. On its basis the propagation of signals in space-time is considered. The Doppler effect is generalized for these types of spaces. The notions of standard (longitudinal) Doppler effect and transversal Doppler effect are introduced. On their grounds, the Hubble effect and the aberration effect appear as Doppler effects with explicit forms of the centrifugal (centripetal) and Coriolis velocity vector fields in spaces with affine connections and metrics. The upp…
We describe numerical techniques used in the construction of our 4th order evolution for the full Einstein equations, and assess the accuracy of representative solutions. The code is based on a null gauge with a quasi-spherical radial coordinate, and simulates the interaction of a single black hole with gravitational radiation. Techniques used include spherical harmonic representations, convolution spline interpolation and filtering, and an RK4 "method of lines" evolution. For sample initial data of "intermediate" size (gravitational field with 19% of the black hole mass), the code is accurate…
The issue of the local visibility of the shell-focussing singularity in marginally bound spherical dust collapse is considered from the point of view of the existence of future-directed null geodesics with angular momentum which emanate from the singularity. The initial data (i.e. the initial density profile) at the onset of collapse is taken to be of class $C^3$. Simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a naked singularity are derived in terms of the data. It is shown that there exist future-directed non-radial null geodesics emanating from the singularity if and only i…
We study analytically the features of the Cauchy horizon (CH) singularity inside a spherically-symmetric charged black hole, nonlinearly perturbed by a self-gravitating massless scalar field. We derive exact expressions for the divergence rate of the blue-shift factors, namely the derivatives in the outgoing direction of the scalar field $Φ$ and the area coordinate $r$. Both derivatives are found to grow along the contracting CH exactly like $1/r$. Our results are valid everywhere along the CH singularity, up to the point of full focusing. These exact analytic expressions are verified numerica…
Extending the study of spherically symmetric metrics satisfying the dominant energy condition and exhibiting singularities of power-law type initiated in SI93, we identify two classes of peculiar interest: focusing timelike singularity solutions with the stress-energy tensor of a radiative perfect fluid (equation of state: $p={1\over 3} ρ$) and a set of null singularity classes verifying identical properties. We consider two important applications of these results: to cosmology, as regards the possibility of solving the horizon problem with no need to resort to any inflationary scenario, and t…
We revisit Winicour's affine-null metric initial value formulation of General Relativity, where the characteristic initial value formulation is set up with a null metric having two affine parameters. In comparison to past work, where the application of the formulation was aimed for the timelike-null initial value problem, we consider here a boundary surface that is a null hypersurface. All of the initial data are either metric functions or first derivatives of the metric. Given such a set of initial data, Einstein equations can be integrated in a hierarchical manner, where first a set of equat…
We investigate the use of asymptotically null slices combined with stretching or compactification of the radial coordinate for the numerical simulation of asymptotically flat spacetimes. We consider a 1-parameter family of coordinates characterised by the asymptotic relation $r\sim R^{1-n}$ between the physical radius $R$ and coordinate radius $r$, and the asymptotic relation $K\sim R^{n/2-1}$ for the extrinsic curvature of the slices. These slices are asymptotically null in the sense that their Lorentz factor relative to stationary observers diverges as $Γ\sim R^{n/2}$. While $1<n\le 2$ slice…
Double-null coordinates are highly useful in numerical simulations of dynamical spherically-symmetric black holes (BHs). However, they become problematic in long-time simulations: Along the event horizon, the truncation error grows exponentially in the outgoing Eddington null coordinate - which we denote $v_e$ - and runs out of control for a sufficiently long interval of $v_e$. This problem, if not properly addressed, would destroy the numerics both inside and outside the black hole at late times (i.e. large $v_e$). In this paper we explore the origin of this problem, and propose a resolution …
We derive a formula for the Bondi mass aspect in terms of asymptotic data of the Bondi-Sachs metric in the affine gauge. We prove the positivity of the total energy of a regular null cone in agreement with a recent result of Chruściel and Paetz.
We find the general solution of equations of motion for self-gravitating spherical null dust as a perturbative series in powers of the outgoing matter energy-momentum tensor, with the lowest order term being the Vaidya solution for the ingoing matter. This is done by representing the null-dust model as a 2d dilaton gravity theory, and by using a symmetry of a pure 2d dilaton gravity to fix the gauge. Quantization of this solution would provide an effective metric which includes the back-reaction for a more realistic black hole evaporation model than the evaporation models studied previously.
We consider the hyperboloidal initial value problem in numerical relativity, motivated by the goal to evolve radiating compact objects such as black hole binaries with a numerical grid that includes null infinity. Unconstrained evolution schemes promise optimal efficiency, but are difficult to regularize at null infinity, where the compactified Einstein equations are formally singular. In this work we treat the spherically symmetry case, which already poses nontrivial problems and constitutes an important first step. We have carried out stable numerical evolutions with the generalized BSSN and…
A theorem, giving necessary and sufficient condition for naked singularity formation in spherically symmetric non static spacetimes under hypotheses of physical acceptability, is formulated and proved. The theorem relates existence of singular null geodesics to existence of regular curves which are super-solutions of the radial null geodesic equation, and allows us to treat all the known examples of naked singularities from a unified viewpoint. New examples are also found using this approach, and perspectives are discussed.
The effect of a scale dependent newton coupling, which is a crucial ingredient of many quantum gravity theories, is investigated in this paper. For case of non-rotating black holes, and using the null energy condition, we show that Newtons scale dependent coupling can actually be obtained without solving the full quantum gap equations.
We address the hyperboloidal initial value problem in the context of Numerical Relativity, motivated by its evolution on hyperboloidal slices: smooth spacelike slices that reach future null infinity, the "location" in spacetime where radiation is to be extracted. Our approach uses the BSSN and Z4 formulations and a time-independent conformal factor. The resulting system of PDEs includes formally diverging terms at null infinity. Here we discuss a regularized numerical scheme in spherical symmetry. A critical ingredient are the gauge conditions, which control the treatment of future null infini…
We present numerical solutions of the hyperboloidal initial value problem for a self-gravitating scalar field in spherical symmetry, using a variety of standard hyperbolic slicing and shift conditions that we adapt to our hyperboloidal setup. We work in the framework of conformal compactification, and study both evolutions that employ the preferred conformal gauge, which simplifies the formal singularities of our equations at null infinity, and evolutions without this simplification. In previous work we have used a staggered grid, which excludes null infinity, while now we include the option o…
We analyze here the structure of non-radial nonspacelike geodesics terminating in the past at a naked singularity formed as the end state of inhomogeneous dust collapse. The spectrum of outgoing nonspacelike null geodesics is examined analytically. The local and global visibility of the singularity is also examined by integrating numerically the null geodesics equations. The possible implications of existence of such families towards the appearance of the star in late stages of gravitational collapse are considered. It is seen that the outgoing non-radial geodesics give an appearance to the na…
We present an algorithm for the construction of conformal coordinates in the interior of a spherically symmetric, collapsing matter cloud in general relativity. This algorithm is based on the numerical integration of the radial null geodesics and a local analysis of their behavior close to the singularity. As an application, we consider a collapsing spherical dust cloud, generate the corresponding conformal diagram and analyze the structure of the resulting singularity. A new bound on the initial data which guarantees that the singularity is visible from future null infinity is also obtained.
We study spherically symmetric solutions of semilinear wave equations in the case where the nonlinearity satisfies the null condition on extremal Reissner--Nordstrom black hole spacetimes. We show that solutions which arise from sufficiently small compactly supported smooth data prescribed on a Cauchy hypersfurace \widetilde{Σ}_0 crossing the future event horizon \mathcal{H}^{+} are globally well-posed in the domain of outer communications up to and including \mathcal{H}^{+}. Our method allows us to close all bootstrap estimates under very weak decay results (compatible with those known for th…
It was long believed that the singularity inside a realistic, rotating black hole must be spacelike. However, studies of the internal geometry of black holes indicate a more complicated structure is typical. While it seems likely that an observer falling into a black hole with the collapsing star encounters a crushing spacelike singularity, an observer falling in at late times generally reaches a null singularity which is vastly different in character to the standard Belinsky, Khalatnikov and Lifschitz (BKL) spacelike singularity. In the spirit of the classic work of BKL we present an asymptot…
We introduce a formulation of Eulerian general relativistic hydrodynamics which is applicable for (perfect) fluid data prescribed on either spacelike or null hypersurfaces. Simple explicit expressions for the characteristic speeds and fields are derived in the general case. A complete implementation of the formalism is developed in the case of spherical symmetry. The algorithm is tested in a number of different situations, predisposing for a range of possible applications. We consider the Riemann problem for a polytropic gas, with initial data given on a retarded/advanced time slice of Minkows…
In this paper, under spherical symmetry we prove a trapped surface formation criterion for the Einstein-Maxwell-charged scalar field system. We generalize an approach introduced by Christodoulou for studying the Einstein-scalar field. In appendix, with double null foliation we also reprove Christodoulou's result and for Minkowskian incoming characteristic initial data, we improve Christodoulou's bound.
Simulations of gravitational collapse in null coordinates IV: evolving through the event horizon, with an application to the spherical charged scalar field

We study plane-fronted electrovacuum waves in metric-affine gravity theories (MAG) with cosmological constant. Their field strengths are, on the gravitational side, curvature $R_α{}^β$, nonmetricity $Q_{αβ}$, torsion $T^α$ and, on the matter side, the electromagnetic field strength $F$. Our starting point is the work by Ozsváth, Robinson, and Rózga on type N gravitational fields in general relativity as coupled to null electromagnetic fields.
Penrose's identification with warp provides the general framework for constructing the continuous form of impulsive gravitational wave metrics. We present the 2-component spinor formalism for the derivation of the full family of impulsive spherical gravitational wave metrics which brings out the power in identification with warp and leads to the simplest derivation of exact solutions. These solutions of the Einstein vacuum field equations are obtained by cutting Minkowski space into two pieces along a null cone and re-identifying them with warp which is given by an arbitrary non-linear holomor…
We numerically investigate the interior of a four-dimensional, spherically symmetric charged black hole accreting neutral null fluid. Previous study by Marolf and Ori suggested that late infalling observers encounter an effective shock wave as they approach the outgoing portion of the inner horizon. Non-linear perturbations could generate an effective gravitational shock wave, which manifests as a drop of the area coordinate $r$ from inner horizon value $r_{-}$ towards zero in an extremely short proper time duration of the infalling observer. We consider three different scenarios: a) A charged…
We show that the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar-field equations for wave-like decaying initial data at null infinity have unique local solutions and unique global solutions for small initial data. We also generalize Christodoulou's global generalized solutions to the wave-like decaying initial data. We emphasize that this decaying condition is sharp.
For spherical symmetry, we provide expressions for the radial null-null components of the generalized Einstein tensor $E_{ab}$ for Lovelock models for diagonal $E_{ab}$ in terms of the metric and of the radial null-null components of the Ricci tensor. We show they can be usefully employed for example in obtaining the Birkhoff-like theorem for Lovelock models, as well as in providing a relation between the null energy and null convergence conditions for the same models.
We investigate the occurrence of naked singularities in the spherically symmetric, plane symmetric and cylindrically symmetric collapse of charged null fluid in an anti-de Sitter background. The naked singularities are found to be strong in Tipler's sense and thus violate the cosmic censorship conjecture, but not hoop conjecture.
We show that almost all metric--affine theories of gravity yield Einstein equations with a non--null cosmological constant $Λ$. Under certain circumstances and for any dimension, it is also possible to incorporate a Weyl vector field $W_μ$ and therefore the presence of an anisotropy. The viability of these field equations is discussed in view of recent astrophysical observations.

We consider the Hamiltonian dynamics of spherically symmetric Einstein gravity with a thin null-dust shell, under boundary conditions that fix the evolution of the spatial hypersurfaces at the two asymptotically flat infinities of a Kruskal-like manifold. The constraints are eliminated via a Kuchar-type canonical transformation and Hamiltonian reduction. The reduced phase space $\tildeΓ$ consists of two disconnected copies of $R^4$, each associated with one direction of the shell motion. The right-moving and left-moving test shell limits can be attached to the respective components of $\tildeΓ…
We initiate the development of a horizon-based initial (or rather final) value formalism to describe the geometry and physics of the near-horizon spacetime: data specified on the horizon and a future ingoing null boundary determine the near-horizon geometry. In this initial paper we restrict our attention to spherically symmetric spacetimes made dynamic by matter fields. We illustrate the formalism by considering a black hole interacting with a) inward-falling, null matter (with no outward flux) and b) a massless scalar field. The inward-falling case can be exactly solved from horizon data. Fo…
The spherically symmetric null hypersurfaces in a Schwarzschild spacetime are smooth away from the singularities and foliate the spacetime. We prove the existence of more general foliations by null hypersurfaces without the spherical symmetry condition. In fact we also relax the spherical symmetry of the ambient spacetime and prove a more general result: in a perturbed Schwarzschild spacetime (not necessary being vacuum), nearly round null hypersurfaces can be extended regularly to the past null infinity, thus there exist many foliations by regular null hypersurfaces in the exterior region of …
A large family of inhomogeneous non-static spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein equation for null fluid in higher dimensions has been obtained. It encompasses higher dimensional versions of many previously known solutions such as Vaidya, charged Vaidya and Husain solutions and also some new solutions representing global monopole or string dust. It turns out that physical properties of the solutions carry over to higher dimensions.
We use null spherical (observational) coordinates to describe a class of inhomogeneous cosmological models. The proposed cosmological construction is based on the observer past null cone. A known difficulty in using inhomogeneous models is that the null geodesic equation is not integrable in general. Our choice of null coordinates solves the radial ingoing null geodesic by construction. Furthermore, we use an approach where the velocity field is uniquely calculated from the metric rather than put in by hand. Conveniently, this allows us to explore models in a non-comoving frame of reference. I…
We show that the behaviour of outgoing radial null geodesic congruence on the apparent horizon is related to the property of nakedness in spherical dust collapse justifying the difference between the Penrose diagrams in the naked and covered dust collapse scenarios. We provide arguments suggesting that the relationship could be generally valid.
The non-equatorial spherical null geodesics of rotating Kerr black holes are studied analytically. Unlike the extensively studied equatorial circular orbits whose radii are known analytically, no closed-form formula exists in the literature for the radii of generic (non-equatorial) spherical geodesics. We provide here an approximate formula for the radii r_{ph}(a/M;cos i) of these spherical null geodesics, where a/M is the dimensionless angular-momentum of the black hole and cos i is an effective inclination angle (with respect to the black-hole equatorial plane) of the orbit. It is well-known…
