We introduce the notion of a self-similar action of a groupoid $G$ on a finite higher-rank graph. To these actions we associate a compactly aligned product system of Hilbert bimodules, and thereby obtain corresponding universal Nica--Toeplitz and Cuntz--Pimsner algebras. We consider natural actions of the real numbers on both algebras and study the KMS states of the associated dynamics. For large inverse temperatures, we describe the simplex of KMS states on the Nica--Toeplitz algebra in terms of traces on the full $C^*$-algebra of $G$. We prove that if the graph is $G$-aperiodic and the action satisfies a finite-state condition, then there is a unique KMS state on the Cuntz--Pimsner algebra.
We provide groupoid models for Toeplitz and Cuntz-Krieger algebras of topological higher-rank graphs. Extending the groupoid models used in the theory of graph algebras and topological dynamical systems to our setting, we prove results on essential freeness and amenability of the groupoids which capture the existing theory, and extend results involving group crossed products of graph algebras.
We provide inverse semigroup and groupoid models for the Toeplitz and Cuntz-Krieger algebras of finitely aligned higher-rank graphs. Using these models, we prove a uniqueness theorem for the Cuntz-Krieger algebra.
This dissertation concerns the classification of groupoid and higher-rank graph C*-algebras and has two main components. Firstly, for a groupoid it is shown that the notions of strength of convergence in the orbit space and measure-theoretic accumulation along the orbits are equivalent ways of realising multiplicity numbers associated to a sequence of induced representations of the groupoid C*-algebra. Examples of directed graphs are given, showing how to determine the multiplicity numbers associated to various sequences of induced representations of the directed graph C*-algebras. The second …
We consider the amenability of groupoids $G$ equipped with a group valued cocycle $c:G\to Q$ with amenable kernel $c^{-1}(e)$. We prove a general result which implies, in particular, that $G$ is amenable whenever $Q$ is amenable and if there is countable set $D\subset G$ such that $c(G^{u})D=Q$ for all $u\in G^{(0)}$. We show that our result is applicable to groupoids arising from partial semigroup actions. We explore these actions in detail and show that these groupoids include those arising from directed graphs, higher rank graphs and even topological higher rank graphs. We believe our metho…
We consider fiberwise singly generated Fell-bundles over etale groupoids. Given a continuous real-valued 1-cocycle on the groupoid, there is a natural dynamics on the cross-sectional algebra of the Fell bundle. We study the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger equilibrium states for this dynamics. Following work of Neshveyev on equilibrium states on groupoid C*-algebras, we describe the equilibrium states of the cross-sectional algebra in terms of measurable fields of traces on the C*-algebras of the restrictions of the Fell bundle to the isotropy subgroups of the groupoid. As a special case, we obtain a des…
We extend Matui's notion of almost finiteness to general etale groupoids and show that the reduced groupoid C*-algebras of minimal almost finite groupoids have stable rank one. The proof follows a new strategy, which can be regarded as a local version of the large subalgebra argument. The following three are the main consequences of our result. (i) For any group of (local) subexponential growth and for any its minimal action admitting a totally disconnected free factor, the crossed product has stable rank one. (ii) Any countable amenable group admits a minimal action on the Cantor set all whos…
We consider the boundary-path groupoids of topological higher-rank graphs. We show that the all such groupoids are topologically amenable. We deduce that the C*-algebras of topological higher-rank graphs are nuclear and prove versions of the gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem. We then provide a necessary and sufficient condition for simplicity of a topological higher-rank graph C*-algebra, and a condition under which it is also purely infinite.
In this paper we show that for an almost finite minimal ample groupoid $G$, its reduced $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $C_r^*(G)$ has real rank zero and strict comparison even though $C_r^*(G)$ may not be nuclear in general. Moreover, if we further assume $G$ being also second countable and non-elementary, then its Cuntz semigroup ${\rm Cu}(C_r^*(G))$ is almost divisible and ${\rm Cu}(C_r^*(G))$ and ${\rm Cu}(C_r^*(G)\otimes \mathcal{Z})$ are canonically order-isomorphic, where $\mathcal{Z}$ denotes the Jiang-Su algebra.
Given a $k$-graph $Λ$ we construct a Markov space $M_Λ$, and a collection of $k$ pairwise commuting cellular automata on $M_Λ$, providing for a factorization of Markov's shift. Iterating these maps we obtain an action of ${\mathbb N}^k$ on $M_Λ$ which is then used to form a semidirect product groupoid $M_Λ\rtimes {\mathbb N}^k$. This groupoid turns out to be identical to the path groupoid constructed by Kumjian and Pask, and hence its C*-algebra is isomorphic to the higher rank graph C*-algebra of $Λ$.
We consider self-similar actions of groupoids on the path spaces of finite directed graphs, and construct examples of such self-similar actions using a suitable notion of graph automaton. Self-similar groupoid actions have a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra and a Toeplitz algebra, both of which carry natural dynamics lifted from the gauge actions. We study the equilibrium states (the KMS states) on the resulting dynamical systems. Above a critical inverse temperature, the KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra are parametrised by the traces on the full $C^*$-algebra of the groupoid, and we describe a program…
A diagram of groupoid correspondences is a homomorphism to the bicategory of étale groupoid correspondences. We study examples of such diagrams, including complexes of groups and self-similar higher-rank graphs. We encode the diagram in a single groupoid, which we call its groupoid model. The groupoid model is defined so that there is a natural bijection between its actions on a space and suitably defined actions of the diagram. We describe the groupoid model in several cases, including a complex of groups or a self-similar group. We show that the groupoid model is a bilimit in the bicategory …
k-graphs are higher-rank analogues of directed graphs which were first developed to provide combinatorial models for operator algebras of Cuntz-Krieger type. Here we develop a theory of the fundamental groupoid of a k-graph, and relate it to the fundamental groupoid of an associated graph called the 1-skeleton. We also explore the failure, in general, of k-graphs to faithfully embed into their fundamental groupoids.
We define a semidirect product groupoid of a system of partially defined local homeomorphisms $T=(T_{1},..., T_{r})$. We prove that this construction gives rise to amenable groupoids. The associated algebra is a Cuntz-like algebra. We use this construction for higher rank graph algebras in order to give a topological interpretation for the duality in $E$-theory between $C^{*}(Λ)$ and $C^{*}(Λ^{op})$.
We introduce the notion of a topological higher-rank graph, a unified generalization of the higher-rank graph and the topological graph. Using groupoid techniques, we define the Toeplitz and Cuntz-Krieger algebras of topological higher-rank graphs, and show that the $C^*$-algebras defined are coherent with the existing theory.
Given a higher-rank graph $Λ$, we investigate the relationship between the cohomology of $Λ$ and the cohomology of the associated groupoid $G_Λ$. We define an exact functor between the abelian category of right modules over a higher-rank graph $Λ$ and the category of $G_Λ$-sheaves, where $G_Λ$ is the path groupoid of $Λ$. We use this functor to construct compatible homomorphisms from both the cohomology of $Λ$ with coefficients in a right $Λ$-module, and the continuous cocycle cohomology of $G_Λ$ with values in the corresponding $G_Λ$-sheaf, into the sheaf cohomology of $G_Λ$.
We initiate the study of C*-algebras and groupoids arising from left regular representations of Garside categories, a notion which originated from the study of Braid groups. Every higher rank graph is a Garside category in a natural way. We develop a general classification result for closed invariant subspaces of our groupoids as well as criteria for topological freeness and local contractiveness, properties which are relevant for the structure of the corresponding C*-algebras. Our results provide a conceptual explanation for previous results on gauge-invariant ideals of higher rank graph C*-a…
This paper continues our investigation into the question of when a homotopy $ω= \{ω_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ of 2-cocycles on a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ gives rise to an isomorphism of the $K$-theory groups of the twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras: $K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_0)) \cong K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_1)).$ In particular, we build on work by Kumjian, Pask, and Sims to show that if $\mathcal{G} = \mathcal{G}_Λ$ is the infinite path groupoid associated to a row-finite higher-rank graph $Λ$ with no sources, and $\{c_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ is a homotopy of 2-cocycles on $Λ$, then $K…
We will define new constructions similar to the graph systems of correspondences described by Deaconu et al. We will use these to prove a version of Ionescu's theorem for higher rank graphs. Afterwards we will examine the properties of these constructions further and make contact with Yeend's topological k-graphs and the tensor groupoid valued product systems of Fowler and Sims.
In this paper we describe a new method of defining C*-algebras from oriented combinatorial data, thereby generalizing the constructions of algebras from directed graphs, higher-rank graphs, and ordered groups. We show that only the most elementary notions of concatenation and cancellation of paths are required to define versions of Cuntz-Krieger and Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebras, and the presentation by generators and relations follows naturally. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of an AF core, hence of the nuclearity of the C*-algebras, and for aperiodicity, which is used to p…
A simple Steinberg algebra associated to an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ is algebraically purely infinite if and only if the characteristic functions of compact open subsets of the unit space are infinite idempotents. If a simple Steinberg algebra is algebraically purely infinite, then the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(G)$ is simple and purely infinite. But the Steinberg algebra seems to small for the converse to hold. For this purpose we introduce an intermediate $*$-algebra $B(G)$ constructed using corners $1_U C^*_r(G) 1_U$ for all compact open subsets $U$ of the unit space of the g…
We consider groupoids constructed from a finite number of commuting local homeomorphisms acting on a compact metric space, and study generalized Ruelle operators and $ C^{\ast} $-algebras associated to these groupoids. We provide a new characterization of $ 1 $-cocycles on these groupoids taking values in a locally compact abelian group, given in terms of $ k $-tuples of continuous functions on the unit space satisfying certain canonical identities. Using this, we develop an extended Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius theory for dynamical systems of several commuting operators ($ k $-Ruelle triples and c…
We consider a family of operator-algebraic dynamical systems involving the Toeplitz algebras of higher-rank graphs. We explicitly compute the KMS states (equilibrium states) of these systems built from small graphs with up to four connected components.
A continuous groupoid homomorphism $c$ on a locally compact second countable Hausdorff étale groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ gives rise to a $C^{*}$-dynamical system in which every $β$-KMS state can be associated to a $e^{-βc}$-quasi-invariant measure $μ$ on $\mathcal{G}^{(0)}$. Letting $Δ_μ$ denote the set of KMS states associated to such a $μ$, we will prove that $Δ_μ$ is a simplex for a large class of groupoids, and we will show that there is an abelian group that acts transitively and freely on the extremal points of $Δ_μ$. This group can be described using the support of $μ$, so our theory of symm…
A characterization is given for directed graphs that yield graph $C^*$-algebras with continuous trace. This is established for row-finite graphs with no sources first using a groupoid approach, and extended to the general case via the Drinen-Tomforde desingularization. Partial results are given to characterize higher-rank graphs that yield $C^*$-algebras with continuous trace.
We define the categorical cohomology of a k-graph Λ and show that the first three terms in this cohomology are isomorphic to the corresponding terms in the cohomology defined in our previous paper. This leads to an alternative characterisation of the twisted k-graph C*-algebras introduced there. We prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem and use it to show that every twisted k-graph C*-algebra is isomorphic to a twisted groupoid C*-algebra. We deduce criteria for simplicity, prove a Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem and establish that all twisted k-graph C*-algebras are nuclear and belong to…
We consider a family of higher-dimensional noncommutative tori, which are twisted analogues of the algebras of continuous functions on ordinary tori, and their Toeplitz extensions. Just as solenoids are inverse limits of tori, our Toeplitz noncommutative solenoids are direct limits of the Toeplitz extensions of noncommutative tori. We consider natural dynamics on these Toeplitz algebras, and compute the equilibrium states for these dynamics. We find a large simplex of equilibrium states at each positive inverse temperature, parametrised by the probability measures on an (ordinary) solenoid.
Building on recent work of Robertson and Steger, we associate a C*-algebra to a combinatorial object which may be thought of as a higher rank graph. This C*-algebra is shown to be isomorphic to that of the associated path groupoid. Sufficient conditions on the higher rank graph are found for the associated C*-algebra to be simple, purely infinite and AF. Results concerning the structure of crossed products by certain natural actions of discrete groups are obtained; a technique for constructing rank 2 graphs from ``commuting'' rank 1 graphs is given.
We characterise simplicity of twisted C*-algebras of row-finite k-graphs with no sources. We show that each 2-cocycle on a cofinal k-graph determines a canonical second-cohomology class for the periodicity group of the graph. The groupoid of the k-graph then acts on the cartesian product of the infinite-path space of the graph with the dual group of the centre of any bicharacter representing this second-cohomology class. The twisted k-graph algebra is simple if and only if this action is minimal. We apply this result to characterise simplicity for many twisted crossed products of k-graph algeb…
We describe a special class of representations of an inverse semigroup S on Hilbert's space which we term "tight". These representations are supported on a subset of the spectrum of the idempotent semilattice of S, called the "tight spectrum", which is in turn shown to be precisely the closure of the space of ultra-filters, once filters are identified with semicharacters in a natural way. These representations are moreover shown to correspond to representations of the C*-algebra of the groupoid of germs for the action of S on its tight spectrum. We then treat the case of certain inverse semigr…
The notion of textile system was introduced by M. Nasu in order to analyze endomorphisms and automorphisms of topological Markov shifts. A textile system is given by two finite directed graphs $G$ and $H$ and two morphisms $p,q:G\to H$, with some extra properties. It turns out that a textile system determines a first quadrant two-dimensional shift of finite type, via a collection of Wang tiles, and conversely, any such shift is conjugate to a textile shift. In the case the morphisms $p$ and $q$ have the path lifting property, we prove that they induce groupoid morphisms $π, ρ:Γ(G)\to Γ(H)$ bet…
We consider probability measure preserving discrete groupoids, group actions and equivalence relations in the context of general probability spaces. We study for these objects the notions of cost, $β$-invariant and some higher-dimensional variants. We also propose various convergence results about $\ell^2$-Betti numbers and rank gradient for sequences of actions, groupoids or equivalence relations under weak finiteness assumptions. In particular we connect the combinatorial cost with the cost of the ultralimit equivalence relations. Finally a relative version of Stuck-Zimmer property is also c…
Let $Λ$ be a row-finite and source-free higher rank graph with finitely many vertices. In this paper, we define the Higman-Thompson like group $\Lht$ of the graph C*-algebra $\mathcal{O}_Λ$ to be a special subgroup of the unitary group in $Ø_Λ$. It is shown that $\Lht$ is closely related to the topological full groups of the groupoid associated with $Λ$. Some properties of $\Lht$ are also investigated. We show that its commutator group $\DLht$ is simple and that $\DLht$ has only one nontrivial uniformly recurrent subgroup if $Λ$ is aperiodic and strongly connected. Furthermore, if $Λ$ is singl…
We define the notion of a $Λ$-system of $C^*$-correspondences associated to a higher-rank graph $Λ$. Roughly speaking, such a system assigns to each vertex of $Λ$ a $C^*$-algebra, and to each path in $Λ$ a $C^*$-correspondence in a way which carries compositions of paths to balanced tensor products of $C^*$-correspondences. Under some simplifying assumptions, we use Fowler's technology of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras for product systems of $C^*$-correspondences to associate a $C^*$-algebra to each $Λ$-system. We then construct a Fell bundle over the path groupoid $\Gg_Λ$ and show that the $C^*$-alge…
We study the equilibrium simplex of Nica-Pimsner algebras arising from product systems of finite rank on the free abelian semigroup. First we show that every equilibrium state has a convex decomposition into parts parametrized by ideals on the unit hypercube. Secondly we associate every gauge-invariant part to a sub-simplex of tracial states of the diagonal algebra. We show how this parametrization lifts to the full equilibrium simplices of non-infinite type. The finite rank entails an entropy theory for identifying the two critical inverse temperatures: (a) the least upper bound for existence…
We consider Pimsner algebras that arise from C*-correspondences of finite rank, as dynamical systems with their rotational action. We revisit the Laca-Neshveyev classification of their equilibrium states at positive inverse temperature along with the parametrizations of the finite and the infinite parts simplices by tracial states on the diagonal. The finite rank entails an entropy theory that shapes the KMS-structure. We prove that the infimum of the tracial entropies dictates the critical inverse temperature, below which there are no equilibrium states for all Pimsner algebras. We view the l…
We consider C*-algebras of finite higher-rank graphs along with their rotational action. We show how the entropy theory of product systems with finite frames applies to identify the phase transitions of the dynamics. We compute the positive inverse temperatures where symmetry breaks, and in particular we identify the subharmonic parts of the gauge-invariant equilibrium states. Our analysis applies to positively weighted rotational actions through a recalibration of the entropies.
