We complement our work on the causality of upper semi-continuous distributions of cones with some results on Cauchy hypersurfaces. We prove that every locally stably acausal Cauchy hypersurface is stable. Then we prove that the signed distance $d_S$ from a spacelike hypersurface $S$ is, in a neighborhood of it, as regular as the hypersurface, and by using this fact we give a proof that every Cauchy hypersurface is the level set of a Cauchy temporal (and steep) function of the same regularity as the hypersurface. We also show that in a globally hyperbolic closed cone structure compact spacelike hypersurfaces with boundary can be extended to Cauchy spacelike hypersurfaces of the same regularity. We end the work with a separation result and a density result.
In a recent paper we quantized the interaction of gravity with a Yang-Mills and Higgs field and obtained as a result a gravitational wave equation in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. Assuming that the Cauchy hypersurfaces are compact we proved a spectral resolution for the wave equation by applying the method of separation of variables. In this paper we extend the results to the case when the Cauchy hypersurfaces are non-compact by considering a Gelfand triplet and applying the nuclear spectral theorem.
In our model of quantum gravity the quantum development of a Cauchy hypersurface is governed by a wave equation derived as the result of a canonical quantization process. To find physically interesting solutions of the wave equation we employ the separation of variables by considering a temporal eigenvalue problem which has a complete countable set of eigenfunctions with positive eigenvalues and also a spatial eigenvalue problem which has a complete set of eigendistributions. Assuming that the Cauchy hypersurface is asymtotically Euclidean we prove that the temporal eigenvalues are also spatia…
Recently, folk questions on the smoothability of Cauchy hypersurfaces and time functions of a globally hyperbolic spacetime M, have been solved. Here we give further results, applicable to several problems: (1) Any compact spacelike acausal submanifold H with boundary can be extended to a spacelike Cauchy hypersurface S. If H were only achronal, counterexamples to the smooth extension exist, but a continuous extension (in fact, valid for any compact achronal subset K) is still possible. (2) Given any spacelike Cauchy hypersurface S, a Cauchy temporal function T (i.e., a smooth function with pa…
Given a globally hyperbolic spacetime $M$, we show the existence of a {\em smooth spacelike} Cauchy hypersurface $S$ and, thus, a global diffeomorphism between $M$ and $\R \times S$.
Recently it was found that quantum gravity theories may involve constructing a quantum theory on non-Cauchy hypersurfaces. However this is problematic since the ordinary Poisson brackets are not causal in this case. We suggest a method to identify classical brackets that are causal on 2+1 non-Cauchy hypersurfaces and use it in order to show that the evolution of scalars and vectors fields in the 3rd spatial direction can be constructed by using a Hamilton-like procedure. Finally, we discuss the relevance of this result to quantum gravity.
Recently, a link between Lorentzian and Finslerian Geometries has been carried out, leading to the notion of wind Riemannian structure (WRS), a generalization of Finslerian Randers metrics. Here, we further develop this notion and its applications to spacetimes, by introducing some characterizations and criteria for the completeness of WRS's. As an application, we consider a general class of spacetimes admitting a time function $t$ generated by the flow of a complete Killing vector field (generalized standard stationary spacetimes or, more precisely, SSTK ones) and derive simple criteria ensur…
The global characteristic initial value problem for linear wave equations on globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds is examined, for a class of smooth initial value hypersurfaces satisfying favourable global properties. First it is shown that, if geometrically well-motivated restrictions are placed on the supports of the (smooth) initial datum and of the (smooth) inhomogeneous term, then there exists a continuous global solution which is smooth "on each side" of the initial value hypersurface. A uniqueness result in Sobolev regularity $H^{1/2+\varepsilon}_\mathrm{loc}$ is proved among soluti…
We derive explicit formulae for a set of constraints for the Einstein equations on a null hypersurface, in arbitrary dimensions. We solve these constraints and show that they provide necessary and sufficient conditions so that a spacetime solution of the Cauchy problem on a characteristic cone for the hyperbolic system of the reduced Einstein equations in wave-map gauge also satisfies the full Einstein equations. We prove a geometric uniqueness theorem for this Cauchy problem in the vacuum case.
We prove that analytic initial data on a light cone arising from a metric satisfying a "near-roundness" condition near the vertex lead to a solution of the vacuum Einstein equations to the future of the light-cone.
In this paper we study the spacelike-characteristic Cauchy problem for the Einstein vacuum equations. We prove that given initial data on a maximal compact spacelike hypersurface $Σ\simeq \overline{B(0,1)} \subset \mathbb{R}^3$ and the outgoing null hypersurface $\mathcal{H}$ emanating from $\partial Σ$, the time of existence of a solution to the Einstein vacuum equations is controlled by low regularity bounds on the initial data at the level of curvature in $L^2$. The proof uses the bounded $L^2$ curvature theorem by Klainerman, Szeftel and Rodnianski, the extension procedure for the constrai…
We construct states on the algebra of the Klein-Gordon field that minimize the energy density in homogeneous and in inhomogeneous spacetimes, both with compact Cauchy hypersurfaces. The energy density is measured by geodesic observers and smeared over a spacelike slab of spacetime, entirely containing a Cauchy hypersurface and extended in time. We further show that these states are Hadamard states. The present construction generalizes the construction of States of Low Energy in Robertson-Walker spacetimes presented by Olbermann (2007).
We argue that quantum gravity theories should involve constructing a quantum theory on non-Cauchy hypersurfaces and suggest that the hypersurface direction should be the same as the direction of the effective non-gravitational force field at a point. We start with a short review of works which support this idea and then we foliate spacetime along an effective non-gravitational force field direction. Next we discuss the implication of this foliation on the expected properties of quantum gravity. We also discuss the vagueness caused by constructing any quantum theory when using non-Cauchy foliat…
This paper gives a detailed pedagogic presentation of the central concepts underlying a new algorithm for the numerical solution of Einstein's equations for gravitation. This approach incorporates the best features of the two leading approaches to computational gravitation, carving up spacetime via Cauchy hypersurfaces within a central worldtube, and using characteristic hypersurfaces in its exterior to connect this region with null infinity and study gravitational radiation. It has worked well in simplified test problems, and is currently being used to build computer codes to simulate black h…
We prove that the maximal development of any spherically symmetric spacetime with collisionless matter (obeying the Vlasov equation) or a massless scalar field (obeying the massless wave equation) and possessing a constant mean curvature $S^1 \times S^2$ Cauchy surface also contains a maximal Cauchy surface. Combining this with previous results establishes that the spacetime can be foliated by constant mean curvature Cauchy surfaces with the mean curvature taking on all real values, thereby showing that these spacetimes satisfy the closed-universe recollapse conjecture. A key element of the pr…
In our previous work [Y. Angelopoulos, S. Aretakis, and D. Gajic, Late-time asymptotics for the wave equation on spherically symmetric stationary backgrounds, in Advances in Mathematics 323 (2018), 529-621] we showed that the coefficient in the precise leading-order late-time asymptotics for solutions to the wave equation with smooth, compactly supported initial data on Schwarzschild backgrounds is proportional to the time-inverted Newman-Penrose constant (TINP), that is the Newman-Penrose constant of the associated time integral. The time integral (and hence the TINP constant) is canonically …
We derive a formula for the spacetime volume of a small causal cone. We use this formula within the context of causal set theory to construct causal set expressions for certain geometric quantities relating to a spacetime with a spacelike hypersurface. We also consider a scalar field on the causal set, and obtain causal set expressions relating to its normal derivatives with respect to the hypersurface.
Recently, Carroll and Chen [hep-th/0410270] suggested a promising natural explanation of the thermodynamic arrow of time. However, we criticize their assertion that there exists a Cauchy hypersurface with a minimal entropy and argue that such a Cauchy hypersurface is not needed for an explanation of the arrow of time.
On arbitrary spacetimes, we study the characteristic Cauchy problem for Dirac fields on a light-cone. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the future of the light-cone inside a geodesically convex neighbourhood of the vertex. This is done for data in $L^2$ and we give an explicit definition of the space of data on the light-cone producing a solution in $H^1$. The method is based on energy estimates following L. Hörmander (J.F.A. 1990). The data for the characteristic Cauchy problem are only a half of the field, the other half is recovered from the characteristic data by integr…
In this paper, we review results on the existence (and nonexistence) of constant mean curvature spacelike hypersurfaces in the cosmological setting, and discuss the connection to the spacetime splittng problem. It is a pleasure to dedicate this paper to Robert Bartnik, who has made fundamental contributions to this area.
We define the stretched future light cone, a timelike hypersurface composed of the worldlines of radially accelerating observers with constant and uniform proper acceleration. By attributing temperature and entropy to this hypersurface, we derive Einstein's equations from the Clausius relation. Moreover, we show that the gravitational equations of motion for a broad class of diffeomorphism-invariant theories of gravity can be obtained from thermodynamics on the stretched future light cone, provided the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is replaced by the Wald entropy.
We prove that if in a spacetime endowed with a merely continuous metric, a complete partial Cauchy hypersurface has nonempty Cauchy horizon, then the horizon is caused by the presence of almost closed causal curves behind it or by the influence of points at infinity. This statement is related to strong cosmic censorship and a conjecture of Wald. In this light, Wald's conjecture can be reformulated as a PDE problem about the location of Cauchyh horizons inside black hole interiors.
We present a general gauge invariant formalism for defining cosmological averages that are relevant for observations based on light-like signals. Such averages involve either null hypersurfaces corresponding to a family of past light-cones or compact surfaces given by their intersection with timelike hypersurfaces. Generalized Buchert-Ehlers commutation rules for derivatives of these light-cone averages are given. After introducing some adapted "geodesic light-cone" coordinates, we give explicit expressions for averaging the redshift to luminosity-distance relation and the so-called "redshift …
Starting from the Hawking--Page solutions, we consider the corresponding Lorentzian cone metrics. These represent cone interior scale-invariant vacuum solutions, defined in the chronological past of the scaling origin. We extend the Lorentzian Hawking--Page solutions to the cone exterior region in the class of $(4+1)$-dimensional scale-invariant vacuum solutions with an $SO(3)\times U(1)$ isometry, using the Kaluza--Klein reduction and the methods of Christodoulou. We prove that each Lorentzian Hawking--Page solution has extensions with a null curvature singularity, extensions with a spacelike…
Motivated by the Hawking-King-McCarthy-Malament (HKMM) theorem and the associated reconstruction of spacetime geometry from its causal structure $(M,\prec)$ and local volume element $ε$, we define a one-parameter family of spatial distance functions on a Cauchy hypersurface $Σ$ using only $(M,\prec)$ and $ε$. The parameter corresponds to a "mesoscale" cut-off which, when appropriately chosen, provides a distance function which approximates the induced spatial distance function to leading order. This admits a straightforward generalisation to the discrete analogue of a Cauchy hypersurface in a …
We analyse the Cauchy problem on a characteristic cone, including its vertex, for the Einstein equations in arbitrary dimensions. We use a wave map gauge, solve the obtained constraints and show gauge conservation.
