We deal with heteroclinic planar fronts for parameter-dependent reaction-diffusion equations with bistable reaction and saturating diffusive term like $$ u_t=ε\, \textrm{div}\, \left(\frac{\nabla u}{\sqrt{1+\vert \nabla u \vert^2}}\right) + f(u), \quad u=u(x, t), \; x \in \textbf{R}^n, \, t \in \textbf{R}, $$ analyzing in particular their behavior for $ε\to 0$. First, we construct monotone and non-monotone planar traveling waves, using a change of variables allowing to analyze a two-point problem for a suitable first-order reduction; then, we investigate their asymptotic behavior for $ε\to 0$, showing in particular that the convergence of the critical fronts to a suitable step function may occur passing through discontinuous solutions.
The present paper is devoted to the study of existence, uniqueness and stability of transition fronts of nonlocal dispersal evolution equations in time heterogeneous media of bistable type under the unbalanced condition. We first study space nonincreasing transition fronts and prove various important qualitative properties, including uniform steepness, stability, uniform stability and exponential decaying estimates. Then, we show that any transition front, after certain space shift, coincides with a space nonincreasing transition front (if it exists), which implies the uniqueness, up to space …
In this paper, curved fronts are constructed for spatially periodic bistable reaction-diffusion equations under the a priori assumption that there exist pulsating fronts in every direction. Some sufficient and some necessary conditions of the existence of curved fronts are given. Furthermore, the curved front is proved to be unique and stable. Finally, a curved front with varying interfaces is also constructed. Despite the effect of the spatial heterogeneity, the result shows the existence of curved fronts for spatially periodic bistable reaction-diffusion equations which is known for the homo…
This paper is devoted to reaction-diffusion equations with bistable nonlinearities depending periodically on time. These equations admit two linearly stable states. However, the reaction terms may not be bistable at every time. These may well be a periodic combination of standard bistable and monostable nonlinearities. We are interested in a particular class of solutions, namely pulsating fronts. We prove the existence of such solutions in the case of small time periods of the nonlinearity and in the case of small perturbations of a nonlinearity for which we know there exist pulsating fronts. …
We study reaction-diffusion equations in one spatial dimension and with general (space- or time-) inhomogeneous mixed bistable-ignition reactions. For those satisfying a simple quantitative hypothesis, we prove existence and uniqueness of transition fronts, as well as convergence of "typical" solutions to the unique transition front (the existence part even extends to mixed bistable-ignition-monostable reactions). These results also hold for all pure ignition reactions without any other hypotheses, but not for all pure bistable reactions. In fact, we find examples of either spatially or tempor…
This paper is concerned with the propagating speeds of transition fronts in $R^N$ for spatially periodic bistable reaction-diffusion equations. The notion of transition fronts generalizes the standard notions of traveling fronts. Under the a priori assumption that there exist pulsating fronts for every direction $e$ with nonzero speeds, we show some continuity and differentiability properties of the front speeds and profiles with respect to the direction $e$. Finally, we prove that the propagating speed of any transition front is larger than the infimum of speeds of pulsating fronts and less t…
This paper is chiefly concerned with qualitative properties of some reaction-diffusion fronts. The recently defined notions of transition fronts generalize the standard notions of traveling fronts. In this paper, we show the existence and the uniqueness of the global mean speed of bistable transition fronts in R^N. This speed is proved to be independent of the shape of the level sets of the fronts. The planar fronts are also characterized in the more general class of almost-planar fronts with any number of transition layers. These qualitative properties show the robustness of the notions of tr…
This paper is concerned with the existence and qualitative properties of pulsating fronts for spatially periodic reaction-diffusion equations with bistable nonlinearities. We focus especially on the influence of the spatial period and, under various assumptions on the reaction terms and by using different types of arguments, we show several existence results when the spatial period is small or large. We also establish some properties of the set of periods for which there exist non-stationary fronts. Furthermore, we prove the existence of stationary fronts or non-stationary partial fronts at an…
This paper is concerned with the existence and further properties of propagation speeds of transition fronts for bistable reaction-diffusion equations in exterior domains and in some domains with multiple cylindrical branches. In exterior domains we show that all transition fronts with complete propagation propagate with the same global mean speed, which turns out to be equal to the uniquely defined planar speed. In domains with multiple cylindrical branches, we show that the solutions emanating from some branches and propagating completely are transition fronts propagating with the unique pla…
We study the biological situation when an invading population propagates and replaces an existing population with different characteristics. For instance, this may occur in the presence of a vertically transmitted infection causing a cytoplasmic effect similar to the Allee effect (e.g. Wolbachia in Aedes mosquitoes): the invading dynamics we model is bistable. After quantification of the propagules, a second question of major interest is the invasive power. How far can such an invading front go, and what can stop it? We rigorously show that a heterogeneous environment inducing a strong enough …
We consider the damped wave equation αu_tt + u_t = u_xx - V'(u) on the whole real line, where V is a bistable potential. This equation has travelling front solutions of the form u(x,t) = h(x-st) which describe a moving interface between two different steady states of the system, one of which being the global minimum of V. We show that, if the initial data are sufficiently close to the profile of a front for large |x|, the solution of the damped wave equation converges uniformly on R to a travelling front as t goes to plus infinity. The proof of this global stability result is inspired by a rec…
Using the method of sub-super-solution, we construct a solution of $(-Δ)^su-cu_z-f(u)=0$ on $\R^3$ of pyramidal shape. Here $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional Laplacian of sub-critical order $1/2<s<1$ and $f$ is a bistable nonlinearity. Hence, the existence of a traveling wave solution for the parabolic fractional Allen-Cahn equation with pyramidal front is asserted. The maximum of planar traveling wave solutions in various directions gives a sub-solution. A super-solution is roughly defined as the one-dimensional profile composed with the signed distance to a rescaled mollified pyramid. In the main e…
For a class of reaction-diffusion equations describing propagation phenomena, we prove that for any entire solution $u$, the level set $\{u=λ\}$ is a Lipschitz graph in the time direction if $λ$ is close to $1$. Under a further assumption that $u$ connects $0$ and $1$, it is shown that all level sets are Lipschitz graphs. By a blowing down analysis, the large scale motion law for these level sets and a characterization of the minimal speed for travelling waves are also given.
We devote this paper to the issue of existence of pulsating travelling front solutions for spatially periodic heterogeneous reaction-diffusion equations in arbitrary dimension, in both bistable and more general multistable frameworks. In the multistable case, the notion of a single front is not sufficient to understand the dynamics of solutions, and we instead observe the appearance of a so-called propagating terrace. This roughly refers to a finite family of stacked fronts connecting intermediate stable steady states whose speeds are ordered. Surprisingly, for a given equation, the shape of t…

This paper addresses the existence and spectral stability of traveling fronts for nonlinear hyperbolic equations with a positive "damping" term and a reaction function of bistable type. Particular cases of the former include the relaxed Allen-Cahn equation and the nonlinear version of the telegrapher's equation with bistable reaction term. The existence theory of the fronts is revisited, yielding useful properties such as exponential decay to the asymptotic rest states and a variational formula for the unique wave speed. The spectral problem associated to the linearized equation around the fro…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of a traveling front and of its speed for the homogeneous heat equation in the half-plane with a Neumann boundary reaction term of non-balanced bistable type or of combustion type. We also establish the monotonicity of the front and, in the bistable case, its behavior at infinity. In contrast with the classical bistable interior reaction model, its behavior at the side of the invading state is of power type, while at the side of the invaded state its decay is exponential. These decay results rely on the construction of a family of explicit bistable traveli…
We consider traveling fronts to the nonlocal bistable equation. We do not assume that the Borel-measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We show that there is a traveling wave solution with monotone profile. In order to prove this result, we would develop a recursive method for abstract monotone dynamical systems and apply it to the equation.
This paper is concerned with the following Lotka-Volterra competition system with advection in a periodic habitat \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \frac{\partial u_1}{\partial t} =d_1(x)\frac{\partial^2 u_1}{\partial x^2}-a_1(x)\frac{\partial u_1}{\partial x}+u_1\left(b_1(x)-a_{11}(x)u_1-a_{12}(x)u_2\right),\\ \frac{\partial u_2}{\partial t} =d_2(x)\frac{\partial^2 u_2}{\partial x^2}-a_2(x)\frac{\partial u_2}{\partial x}+u_2\left(b_2(x)-a_{21}(x)u_1-a_{22}(x)u_2\right), \end{cases} t>0,~x\in\Bbb R, \end{equation*} where $d_i(\cdot)$, $a_i(\cdot)$, $b_i(\cdot)$, $a_{ij}(\cdot)$ $(i,j=1,2)$ are $…
This paper is concerned with a time periodic competition-diffusion system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} {u_t}={u_{xx}}+u(r_1(t)-a_1(t)u-b_1(t)v),\quad t>0,~x\in \mathbb R, {v_t}=d{v_{xx}}+v(r_2(t)-a_2(t)u-b_2(t)v),\quad t>0,~x\in \mathbb R, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $u(t,x)$ and $v(t,x)$ denote the densities of two competing species, $d>0$ is some constant, $r_i(t),a_i(t)$ and $b_i(t)$ are $T-$periodic continuous functions. Under suitable conditions, it has been confirmed by Bao and Wang [J. Differential Equations, 255 (2013), 2402-2435] that this system admits a periodic traveling f…
We investigate the super-linear spreading in a reaction-diffusion model analogous to the Fisher-KPP equation, but in which the population is heterogeneous with respect to the dispersal ability of individuals, and the saturation factor is non-local with respect to one variable. We prove that the rate of acceleration is slower than the rate of acceleration predicted by the linear problem, that is, without saturation. This hindering phenomenon is the consequence of a subtle interplay between the non-local saturation and the non-trivial dynamics of some particular curves that carry the mass at the…
We study the asymptotics of Allen-Cahn-type bistable reaction-diffusion equations which are additively perturbed by a stochastic forcing (time white noise). The conclusion is that the long time, large space behavior of the solutions is governed by an interface moving with curvature dependent normal velocity which is additively perturbed by time white noise. The result is global in time and does not require any regularity assumptions on the evolving front. The main tools are (i)~the notion of stochastic (pathwise) solution for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations with multiplicative rough (…
This paper is concerned with the limit, as the interspecific competition rate goes to infinity, of pulsating front solutions in space-periodic media for a bistable two-species competition--diffusion Lotka--Volterra system. We distinguish two important cases: null asymptotic speed and non-null as-ymptotic speed. In the former case, we show the existence of a segregated stationary equilibrium. In the latter case, we are able to uniquely characterize the segregated pulsating front, and thus full convergence is proved. The segregated pulsating front solves an interesting free boundary problem. We …
This paper deals with the existence of traveling fronts guided by the medium for a KPP reaction-diffusion equation coming from a model in population dynamics in which there is spatial spreading as well as genetic mutation of a quantitative genetic trait that has a locally preferred value. The goal is to understand spreading and invasions in this heterogeneous context. We prove the existence of a threshold value on the existence of a nonzero asymptotic profile (a stationary limiting solution). When a nonzero asymptotic profile exists, we prove the existence of a traveling front. This allows us …
We consider a class of singularly perturbed 2-component reaction-diffusion equations which admit bistable traveling front solutions, manifesting as sharp, slow-fast-slow, interfaces between stable homogeneous rest states. In many example systems, such as models of desertification fronts in dryland ecosystems, such fronts can exhibit an instability by which the interface destabilizes into fingering patterns. Motivated by the appearance of such patterns, we propose two versions of a 2D stability criterion for (transversal) long wavelength perturbations along the interface of these traveling slow…
We consider bistable reaction-diffusion equations in funnel-shaped domains of R N made up of straight parts and conical parts with positive opening angles. We study the large time dynamics of entire solutions emanating from a planar front in the straight part of such a domain and moving into the conical part. We show a dichotomy between blocking and spreading, by proving especially some new Liouville type results on stable solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in the whole space R N. We also show that any spreading solution is a transition front having a global mean speed, which is the un…
For nonlinear parabolic systems of the form \[ \partial_t w(x,t) = \partial_{x}^2 w(x,t) - \nabla V\bigl(w(x,t)\bigr) \,, \] the following conclusions are proved to hold generically with respect to the potential $V$: every travelling front invading a minimum point of $V$ is bistable, there is no standing front, every standing pulse is stable at infinity, the profiles of these fronts and pulses approach their limits at $\pm\infty$ tangentially to the eigenspaces corresponding to the smallest eigenvalues of $D^2V$ at these points, these fronts and pulses are robust with respect to small perturba…
We consider the singular limit of a bistable reaction diffusion equation in the case when the velocity of the traveling wave solution depends on the space variable and converges to a discontinuous function. We show that the family of solutions converges to the stable equilibria off a front propagating with a discontinuous velocity. The convergence is global in time by applying the weak geometric flow uniquely defined through the theory of viscosity solutions and the level-set equation.
We study the existence of monotone heteroclinic traveling waves for a general Fisher-Burgers equation with nonlinear and possibly density-dependent diffusion. Such a model arises, for instance, in physical phenomena where a saturation effect appears for large values of the gradient. We give an estimate for the critical speed (namely, the first speed for which a monotone heteroclinic traveling wave exists) for some different shapes of the reaction term, and we analyze its dependence on a small real parameter when this brakes the diffusion, complementing our study with some numerical simulations…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of sharp front solutions arising from the nonlinear diffusion equation θ_t = (D(θ)θ_x)_x, where the diffusivity is an exponential function D(θ) = D_o exp(βθ). This problem arises for example in the study of unsaturated flow in porous media where θ represents the liquid saturation. For physical parameters corresponding to actual porous media, the diffusivity at the residual saturation is D(0) = D_o << 1 so that the diffusion problem is nearly degenerate. Such problems are characterised by wetting fronts that sharply delineate regions of saturated and unsaturate…

We study homoclinic snaking of one-dimensional, localised states on two-dimensional, bistable lattices via the method of exponential asymptotics. Within a narrow region of parameter space, fronts connecting the two stable states are pinned to the underlying lattice. Localised solutions are formed by matching two such stationary fronts back-to-back; depending on the orientation relative to the lattice, the solution branch may `snake' back and forth within the pinning region via successive saddle-node bifurcations. Standard continuum approximations in the weakly nonlinear limit (equivalently, th…
Following J.D. Murray, we consider a system of two differential equations that models traveling fronts in the Noyes-Field theory of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) chemical reaction. We are also interested in the situation when the system incorporates a delay $h\geq 0$. As we show, the BZ system has a dual character: it is monostable when its key parameter $r \in (0,1]$ and it is bistable when $r >1$. For $h=0, r\not=1$, and for each admissible wave speed, we prove the uniqueness of monotone wavefronts. Next, a concept of regular super-solutions is introduced as a main tool for generating new co…
This paper is concerned with reaction-diffusion systems of two symmetric species in spatial dimension one, having two stable symmetric equilibria connected by a symmetric standing front. The first order variation of the speed of this front when the symmetry is broken through a small perturbation of the diffusion coefficients is computed. This elementary computation relates to the question, arising from population dynamics, of the influence of mobility on dominance, in reaction-diffusion systems modelling the interaction of two competing species. It is applied to two examples. First a toy examp…
