The area law for entanglement provides one of the most important connections between information theory and quantum many-body physics. It is not only related to the universality of quantum phases, but also to efficient numerical simulations in the ground state. Various numerical observations have led to a strong belief that the area law is true for every non-critical phase in short-range interacting systems. However, the area law for long-range interacting systems is still elusive, as the long-range interaction results in correlation patterns similar to those in critical phases. Here, we show that for generic non-critical one-dimensional ground states with locally bounded Hamiltonians, the area law robustly holds without any corrections, even under long-range interactions. Our result guarantees an efficient description of ground states by the matrix-product state in experimentally relevant long-range systems, which justifies the density-matrix renormalization algorithm.
We study an exactly solvable model of $D(D_3)$ non-Abelian anyons on a one-dimensional lattice with a free coupling parameter in the Hamiltonian. For certain values of the coupling parameter level crossings occur, which divide the ground-state phase diagram into four regions. We obtain explicit expressions for the ground-state energy in each phase, for both closed and open chain boundary conditions. For the closed chain case we show that chiral phases occur which are characterised by non-zero ground-state momentum.
We prove that the entanglement entropy of any state evolved under an arbitrary $1/r^α$ long-range-interacting D-dimensional lattice spin Hamiltonian cannot change faster than a rate proportional to the boundary area for any $α>D+1$. We also prove that for any $α>2D+2$, the ground state of such a Hamiltonian satisfies the entanglement area law if it can be transformed along a gapped adiabatic path into a ground state known to satisfy the area law. These results significantly generalize their existing counterparts for short-range interacting systems, and are useful for identifying dynamical phas…

Within the "lowest Landau level approximation", we develop a method to find the ground state of a 2d system of interacting particles confined by a parabolic potential.
We introduce a variational method for the approximation of ground states of strongly interacting spin systems in arbitrary geometries and spatial dimensions. The approach is based on weighted graph states and superpositions thereof. These states allow for the efficient computation of all local observables (e.g. energy) and include states with diverging correlation length and unbounded multi-particle entanglement. As a demonstration we apply our approach to the Ising model on 1D, 2D and 3D square-lattices. We also present generalizations to higher spins and continuous-variable systems, which al…
Bosonic degrees of freedom and their emergence as a part of complex quantum many-body dynamics, symmetries, collective behavior, clustering and phase transitions play an important role in modern studies of quantum systems. In this work we present a systematic study of many-boson systems governed by random interactions. Our findings show that ground states of randomly interacting bosons are not random, being dominated by a few collective configurations containing condensates of clusters.
We study spatial correlation functions of local operators of interacting many bosons confined in a box of a large, but volume V, for various `ground states' whose energy densities are almost degenerate. The ground states include the coherent state of interacting bosons (CSIB), the number state of interacting bosons (NSIB), and the number-phase squeezed state of interacting bosons, which interpolates between the CSIB and NSIB. It was shown previously that only the CSIB is robust (i.e., does not decohere for a macroscopically long time) against the leakage of bosons into an environment. We show …
A rotationally invariant random interaction ensemble was realized in a single-j fermion model. The dominance of ground states with zero and maximum spin was confirmed and explained with a statistical approach based on the random coupling of individual angular momenta. The interpretation is supported by the structure of the ground state wave functions.
We study the ground state of a finite size ensemble of interacting qubits driven by a quantum field. We find a maximally entangled W-state in the ensemble part of the system for a certain coupling parameters region. The area of this region decreases as the ensemble size increases and, in the classical limit, becomes the line in parameter space that defines the phase transition of the system. In the classical limit, we also study the dynamics of the system and its transition from order to disorder for initial energies close to the ground state energy. We find that a critical energy providing th…
We consider charge transport for interacting many-body systems with a gapped ground state subspace which is finitely degenerate and topologically ordered. To any locality-preserving, charge-conserving unitary that preserves the ground state space, we associate an index that is an integer multiple of $1/p$, where $p$ is the ground state degeneracy. We prove that the index is additive under composition of unitaries. This formalism gives rise to several applications: fractional quantum Hall conductance, a fractional Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem that generalizes the standard LSM to systems where th…
We present a method to construct number-conserving Hamiltonians whose ground states exactly reproduce an arbitrarily chosen BCS-type mean-field state. Such parent Hamiltonians can be constructed not only for the usual $s$-wave BCS state, but also for more exotic states of this form, including the ground states of Kitaev wires and 2D topological superconductors. This method leads to infinite families of locally-interacting fermion models with exact topological superconducting ground states. After explaining the general technique, we apply this method to construct two specific classes of models.…
We investigate the finite-size scaling exponents for the critical point at the shape phase transition from U(5) (spherical) to O(6) (deformed $γ$-unstable) dynamical symmetries of the Interacting Boson Model, making use of the Holstein-Primakoff boson expansion and the continuous unitary transformation technique. We compute exactly the leading order correction to the ground state energy, the gap, the expectation value of the $d$-boson number in the ground state and the $E2$ transition probability from the ground state to the first excited state, and determine the corresponding finite-size scal…
We study the localization problem of one-dimensional interacting spinless fermions in an incommensurate optical lattice, which changes from an extended phase to a nonergoic many-body localized phase by increasing the strength of the incommensurate potential. We identify that there exists an intermediate regime before the system enters the many-body localized phase, in which both the localized and extended many-body states coexist, thus the system is divided into three different phases, which can be characterized by normalized participation ratios of the many-body eigenstates and distributions …
We consider a collection of bosonic modes corresponding to the vertices of a graph $Γ.$ Quantum tunneling can occur only along the edges of $Γ$ and a local self-interaction term is present. Quantum entanglement of one vertex with respect the rest of the graph is analyzed in the ground-state of the system as a function of the tunneling amplitude $τ.$ The topology of $Γ$ plays a major role in determining the tunneling amplitude $τ^*$ which leads to the maximum ground-state entanglement. Whereas in most of the cases one finds the intuitively expected result $τ^*=\infty$ we show that it there exis…
We propose a new quantum computational way of obtaining a ground-state energy and expectation values of observables of interacting Hamiltonians. It is based on the combination of the adiabatic quantum evolution to project a ground state of a non-interacting Hamiltonian onto a ground state of an interacting Hamiltonian and the phase estimation algorithm to retrieve the ground-state energy. The expectation value of an observable for the ground state is obtained with the help of Hellmann-Feynman theorem. As an illustration of our method, we consider a displaced harmonic oscillator, a quartic anha…
We offer a general treatment of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a five level system consisting of four metastable ground states. Two additional RF/microwave fields coherently couple the two ground states of the standard EIT $Λ$ atom to a pair of additional hyperfine states in the ground state manifold, generating two sets of dressed states that interact via the probe and control lasers, which couple to the electronic excited state. These new hyperfine dressed states manifest themselves in the linear optical susceptibility of the probe as new resonances in addition to the Autl…
We compare a star and a ring network of interacting spins in terms of the entanglement they can provide between the nearest and the next to nearest neighbor spins in the ground state. We then investigate whether this entanglement can be optimized by allowing the system to interact through a weighted combination of the star and the ring geometries. We find that such a weighted combination is indeed optimal in certain circumstances for providing the highest entanglement between two chosen spins. The entanglement shows jumps and counterintuitive behavior as the relative weighting of the star and …
A variational method for studying the ground state of strongly interacting quantum many-body bosonic systems is presented. Our approach constructs a class of extensive variational non-Gaussian wavefunctions which extend Gaussian states by means of nonlinear canonical transformations (NLCT) on the fields of the theory under consideration. We illustrate this method with the one dimensional Bose-Hubbard model for which the proposal presented here, provides a family of approximate ground states at arbitrarily large values of the interaction strength. We find that, for different values of the inter…
We derive and describe a very accurate variational scheme for the ground state of the system of a few ultra-cold bosons confined in one-dimensional traps of arbitrary shapes. It is based on assumption that all inter-particle correlations have two-body nature. By construction, the proposed ansatz is exact in the noninteracting limit, exactly encodes boundary conditions forced by contact interactions, and gives full control on accuracy in the limit of infinite repulsions. We show its efficiency in a whole range of intermediate interactions for different external potentials. Our results manifest …
We consider $N_a$ three-level atoms (or systems) interacting with a one-mode electromagnetic field in the dipolar and rotating wave approximations. The order of the quantum phase transitions is determined explicitly for each of the configurations $Ξ$, $Λ$ and $V$, with and without detuning. The semi-classical and exact quantum calculations for both the expectation values of the total number of excitations $\cal{M}=\langle \bm{M} \rangle$ and photon number $n=\langle \bm{n} \rangle$ have an excellent correspondence as functions of the control parameters. We prove that the ground state of the co…
Bose-Einstein condensation and the $λ$-transition are described in molecular detail for bosons interacting with a pair potential. New phenomena are identified that are absent in the usual ideal gas treatment. Monte Carlo simulations of Lennard-Jones helium-4 neglecting ground momentum state bosons give a diverging heat capacity approaching the transition. Pure permutation loops give continuous growth in the occupancy of the ground momentum state. Mixed ground and excited momentum state permutation loops give a discontinuous transition to the condensed phase. The consequent latent heat for the …
We consider two-dimensional Hamiltonians on a torus with finite range, finite strength interactions and a unique ground state with a non-vanishing spectral gap, and a conserved local charge, as defined precisely in the text. Using the local charge operators, we introduce a boundary magnetic flux in the horizontal and vertical direction and evolve the ground state quasi-adiabatically around a square of size one magnetic flux, in flux space. At the end of the evolution we obtain a trivial Berry phase, which we compare, via a method reminiscent of Stokes' Theorem, to the Berry phase obtained from…
Critical phenomena involve a structural change in the correlations of its constituents. These features can be employed in quantum simulators to assess when a criticality occurred in medium-size systems, for which phase transitions are not captured by standard thermodynamical methods. Here we demonstrate these concepts in a photonic quantum simulator: we encode the wavefunction of the ground state of a three-spin Ising ring by using a pair of entangled photons. The effect of a simulated magnetic field, leading to a critical modification of the correlation within the ring, is analysed by studyin…
We analyze exact ground state (GS) separability in general $N$ particle systems with two-site couplings. General necessary and sufficient conditions for full separability, in the form of one and two-site eigenvalue equations, are first derived. The formalism is then applied to a class of $SU(n)$-type interacting systems, where each constituent has access to $n$ local levels, and where the total number parity of each level is preserved. Explicit factorization conditions for parity-breaking GS's are obtained, which generalize those for $XYZ$ spin systems and correspond to a fundamental GS multil…
An area law is proved for the Renyi entanglement entropy of possibly degenerate ground states in one-dimensional gapped quantum systems. Suppose in a chain of $n$ spins the ground states of a local Hamiltonian with energy gap $ε$ are constant-fold degenerate. Then, the Renyi entanglement entropy $R_α(0<α<1)$ of any ground state across any cut is upper bounded by $\tilde O(α^{-3}/ε)$, and any ground state can be well approximated by a matrix product state of subpolynomial bond dimension $2^{\tilde O(ε^{-1/4}\log^{3/4}n)}$.
Transparent media exhibiting anomalous dispersion have been of considerable interest since Wang, Kuzmich, and Dogariu [Nature {\bf 406}, 277 (2000)] first observed light propagate with superluminal and negative group velocities without absorption. Here, we propose an atomic model exhibiting these properties, based on a generalization of amplification without inversion in a five-level DIGS system. The system consists of a $Λ$ atom prepared as in standard electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), with two additional metastable ground states coupled to the $Λ$ atom ground states by two RF/m…
The effective field theory approach simplifies the perturbative computation of the ground state energy of the diluted gas of fermions allowing in the case of the unpolarized system to easily re-derive the classic results up to the $(k_{\rm F}a_0)^2$ order (where $k_{\rm F}$ is the system's Fermi momentum and $a_0$ the $s$-wave scattering length) and (with more labour) to extend it up to the order $(k_{\rm F}a_0)^4$. The corresponding expansion of the ground state energy of the polarized gas of spin $1/2$ fermions is known analytically (to our best knowledge) only up to the $k_{\rm F}a_0$ (wher…
I obtain the exact ground state of $N$-fermions in $D$-dimensions $(D \geq 2)$ in case the $N$ particles are interacting via long-ranged two-body and three-body interactions and further they are also interacting via the harmonic oscillator potential. I also obtain the $N$-fermion ground state in case the oscillator potential is replaced by an $N$-body Coulomb-like interaction.
We analyze the ground state properties of a one-dimensional cold atomic system in a lattice, where Rydberg excitations are created by an external laser drive. In the classical limit, the ground state is characterized by a complete devil's staircase for the commensurate solid structures of Rydberg excitations. Using perturbation theory and a mapping onto an effective low energy Hamiltonian, we find a transition of these commensurate solids into a floating solid with algebraic correlations. For stronger quantum fluctuations the floating solid eventually melts within a second quantum phase transi…
We explore the ground state properties of cold atomic gases, loaded into a bichromatic lattice, focusing on the cases of non-interacting fermions and hard-core (Tonks-Girardeau) bosons, trapped by the combination of two potentials with incommensurate periods. For such systems, two limiting cases have been thoroughly established. In the tight-binding limit, the single-particle states in the lowest occupied band show a localization transition, as the strength of the second potential is increased above a certain threshold. In the continuous limit, when the tight-binding approximation does not hol…
We present a microscopic model of interacting fermions where the ground state degeneracy is topologically protected. The model is based on a double-wire setup with local interactions in a particle number conserving setting. A compelling property of this model is the exact solvability for its ground states and low energy excitations. We demonstrate the appearance of topologically protected edge states and derive their braiding properties on a microscopic level. We find the non-abelian statistics of Ising anyons, which can be interpreted as Majorana-like edge states.
The concept of topological phases is a powerful framework to characterize ground states of quantum many-body systems that goes beyond the paradigm of symmetry breaking. While a few topological phases appear in condensed matter systems, a current challenge is the implementation and study of such quantum many-body ground states in artificial matter. Here, we report the experimental realization of a symmetry protected topological phase of interacting bosons in a one-dimensional lattice, and demonstrate a robust ground state degeneracy attributed to protected edge states. The setup is based on ato…
We argue that the entanglement Chern number proposed recently is invariant under the adiabatic deformation of a gapped many-body groundstate into a {\it disentangled/purified} one, which implies a partition of the Chern number into subsystems (disentangled Chern number). We generalize the idea to another topological number, the Z$_2$ Berry phase for a system with particle-hole symmetry, and apply it to a groundstate in a weak topological phase where the Chern number vanishes but the groundstate nevertheless has edge states. This entanglement Berry phase is especially useful for characterizing …
We show that ground states of unfrustrated quantum spin-1/2 systems on general lattices satisfy an entanglement area law, provided that the Hamiltonian can be decomposed into nearest-neighbor interaction terms which have entangled excited states. The ground state manifold can be efficiently described as the image of a low-dimensional subspace of low Schmidt measure, under an efficiently contractible tree-tensor network. This structure gives rise to the possibility of efficiently simulating the complete ground space (which is in general degenerate). We briefly discuss "non-generic" cases, inclu…
We study the robustness, against the leakage of bosons, of wave functions of interacting many bosons confined in a finite box, by deriving and analyzing a general equation of motion for the reduced density operator. We identify a robust wave function that remains a pure state, whereas other wave functions, such as the Bogoliubov's ground state and the ground state with a fixed number of bosons, evolve into mixed states. Although these states all have the off-diagonal long-range order, and almost the same energy densities, we argue that only the robust state is realized as a macroscopic quantum…
We propose to utilize the sub-system fidelity (SSF), defined by comparing a pair of reduced density matrices derived from the degenerate ground states, to identify and/or characterize symmetry protected topological (SPT) states in one-dimensional interacting many-body systems. The SSF tells whether two states are locally indistinguishable (LI) by measurements within a given sub-system. Starting from two polar states (states that could be distinguished on either edge), the other combinations of these states can be mapped onto a Bloch sphere. We prove that a pair of orthogonal states on the equa…
Given a specific interacting quantum Hamiltonian in a general spatial dimension, can one access its entanglement properties, such as, the entanglement entropy corresponding to the ground state wavefunction? Even though progress has been made in addressing this question for interacting bosons and quantum spins, as yet there exist no corresponding methods for interacting fermions. Here we show that the entanglement structure of interacting fermionic Hamiltonians has a particularly simple form -- the interacting reduced density matrix can be written as a sum of operators that describe free fermio…
A local Hamiltonian with Topological Quantum Order (TQO) has a robust ground state degeneracy that makes it an excellent quantum memory candidate. This memory can be corrupted however if part of the state leaves the protected ground state manifold and returns later with a dynamically accrued phase error. Here we analyse how TQO suppresses this process and use this to quantify the degree to which spectral densities in different topological sectors are correlated. We provide numerical verification of our results by modelling an interacting p-wave superconducting wire.
Standard analytical construction of the many-body wave function of interacting particles in one dimension, beyond mean-field theory, is based on the Jastrow approach. The many-body interacting ground state is build up from the ground state of the non-interacting system and the product of solutions of the corresponding interacting two-body problem. However, this is possible only if the center-of-mass motion is decoupled from the mutual interactions. In our work, based on the general constraints given by contact nature of the atom-atom interactions, we present an alternative approach to the stan…
We use entanglement to investigate the transition from vortex liquid phase to vortex lattice phase in weakly interacting rotating Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Ground state entanglement spectrum is analyzed to distinguish these two different phases. For the torus geometry, the low-lying part of ground state entanglement spectrum, as well as the behavior of its lowest level change clearly when the transition occurs. For the sphere geometry, the disappearance of entanglement gap in the conformal limit (CL) can indicate this transition. We also show that the decrease of entanglement between par…
We generalize the Ensemble Geometric Phase (EGP), recently introduced to classify the topology of density matrices, to finite-temperature states of interacting systems in one spatial dimension (1D). This includes cases where the gapped ground state has a fractional filling and is degenerate. At zero temperature the corresponding topological invariant agrees with the well-known invariant of Niu, Thouless and Wu. We show that its value at finite temperatures is identical to that of the ground state below some critical temperature $T_c$ larger than the many-body gap. We illustrate our result with…
In this work, we make a connection between two seemingly different problems. The first problem involves characterizing the properties of entanglement in the ground state of gapped local Hamiltonians, which is a central topic in quantum many-body physics. The second problem is on the quantum communication complexity of testing bipartite states with EPR assistance, a well-known question in quantum information theory. We construct a communication protocol for testing (or measuring) the ground state and use its communication complexity to reveal a new structural property for the ground state entan…
Preparing the ground state of a system of interacting classical particles is an NP-hard problem. Thus, there is in general no better algorithm to solve this problem than exhaustively going through all N configurations of the system to determine the one with lowest energy, requiring a running time proportional to N. A quantum computer, if it could be built, could solve this problem in time sqrt(N). Here, we present a powerful extension of this result to the case of interacting quantum particles, demonstrating that a quantum computer can prepare the ground state of a quantum system as efficientl…
The intriguing many-body phases of quantum matter arise from the interplay of particle interactions, spatial symmetries, and external fields. Generating these phases in an engineered system could provide deeper insight into their nature and the potential for harnessing their unique properties. However, concurrently bringing together the main ingredients for realizing many-body phenomena in a single experimental platform is a major challenge. Using superconducting qubits, we simultaneously realize synthetic magnetic fields and strong particle interactions, which are among the essential elements…
A more reasonable trial ground state wave function is constructed for the relative motion of an interacting two-fermion system in a 1D harmonic potential. At the boundaries both the wave function and its first derivative are continuous and the quasi-momentum is determined by a more practical constraint condition which associates two variational parameters. The upper bound of the ground state energy is obtained by applying the variational principle to the expectation value of the Hamiltonian of relative motion on the trial wave function. The resulted energy and wave function show better agreeme…
