We show that the notions of homotopy epimorphism and homological epimorphism in the category of differential graded algebras are equivalent. As an application we obtain a characterization of acyclic maps of topological spaces in terms of induced maps of their chain algebras of based loop spaces. In the case of a universal acyclic map we obtain, for a wide class of spaces, an explicit algebraic description for these induced maps in terms of derived localization.
We analyze in homological terms the homotopy fixed point spectrum of a T-equivariant commutative S-algebra R. There is a homological homotopy fixed point spectral sequence with E^2_{s,t} = H^{-s}_{gp}(T; H_t(R; F_p)), converging conditionally to the continuous homology H^c_{s+t}(R^{hT}; F_p) of the homotopy fixed point spectrum. We show that there are Dyer-Lashof operations beta^epsilon Q^i acting on this algebra spectral sequence, and that its differentials are completely determined by those originating on the vertical axis. More surprisingly, we show that for each class x in the $^{2r}-term …
Let V be a mod 2 vector space of rank k. W. Singer defined a transfer homomorphism from the GL(k,2) coinvariants of the primitives in the homology of BV to the cohomology of the Steenrod algebra, as an algebraic version of the geometric transfer from the stable homotopy of BV to the stable homotopy of spheres. It has been shown that the algebraic transfer is highly nontrivial and, more precisely, that it is an isomorphism for k=1, 2, or 3. However, Singer showed that it is not an epimorphism for k=5. In this paper, we prove that it also fails to be an epimorphism when k=4. Precisely, it does n…
Theorem 6.1.1 of [H.A.H.A.] on the existence of a model structure on the category of operads is not valid in the generality claimed. We present here a counter-example (due to B. Fresse) and a corrected version of the theorem.
One of the most useful methods for studying the stable homotopy category is localising at some spectrum E. For an arbitrary stable model category we introduce a candidate for the E-localisation of this model category. We study the properties of this new construction and relate it to some well-known categories.
This text gives a construction of a differential graded Lie algebra in Nori's category of effective homological motives. In fact the construction works in more a general setting than that of an Abelian category. This allows us to give the rational homotopy Lie algebra of a 1-connected space a motivic structure. As a consequence the rational homotopy Lie algebra inherits a mixed Hodge structure and Galois module structure.
We show that the canonical map from the associative operad to the unital associative operad is a homotopy epimorphism for a wide class of symmetric monoidal model categories. As a consequence, the space of unital associative algebra structures on a given object is up to homotopy a subset of connected components of the space of non-unital associative algebra structures.
In [Chu12], Church used representation stability to prove that the space of configurations of distinct unordered points in a closed manifold exhibit rational homological stability. A second proof was also given by Randal-Williams in [RW11] using transfer maps. We give a third proof of this fact using localization and rational homotopy theory. This gives new insight into the role that the rationals play in homological stability. Our methods also yield new information about stability for torsion in the homology of configuration spaces of points in a closed manifold.
Let E be an H-space acting on a based space X. Then we refer to ev: E -> X, the map obtained by acting on the base point of X, as a ``generalized evaluation map." We establish several fundamental results about the rational homotopy behaviour of a generalized evaluation map, all of which apply to the usual evaluation map Map(X,X;1)->X. With mild hypotheses on X, we show that a generalized evaluation map ev factors, up to rational homotopy, through a map Gamma_ev: S_ev -> X where S_ev is a (relatively small) finite product of odd-dimensional spheres and the map induced by Gamma_ev on rational ho…
We discuss two categorical characterizations of the class of acyclic maps between (path-connected) spaces. The first one is in terms of the higher categorical notion of an epimorphism. The second one employs the notion of a balanced map, that is, a map whose homotopy pullbacks define also homotopy pushouts. We also identify the modality in the homotopy theory of spaces that is defined by the class of acyclic maps, and discuss the content of the generalized Blakers-Massey theorem for this modality.
Fix a prime $p$. Since their definition in the context of Localization Theory, the homotopy functors $P_{B\Z/p}$ and $CW_{B\Z/p}$ have shown to be powerful tools to understand and describe the mod $p$ structure of a space. In this paper, we study the effect of these functors on a wide class of spaces which includes classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and their homotopical analogues. Moreover, we investigate their relationship in this context with other relevant functors in the analysis of the mod $p$ homotopy, such as Bousfield-Kan completion and Bousfield homological localization.
To do homological algebra with unbounded chain complexes one needs to first find a way of constructing resolutions. Spaltenstein solved this problem for chain complexes of R-modules by truncating further and further to the left, resolving the pieces, and gluing back the partial resolutions. Our aim is to give a homotopy theoretical interpretation of this procedure, which may be extended to a relative setting. We work in an arbitrary abelian category A and fix a class I of "injective objects". We show that Spaltenstein's construction can be captured by a pair of adjoint functors between unbound…
In this addendum, we give a differential form interpretation of the proof of the main theorem of arXiv:1812.02448, which gives lower bounds of the dimensions of $π_k(B\mathrm{Diff}(D^4,\partial))\otimes\mathbb{Q}$ in terms of the dimensions of Kontsevich's graph homology, and explain why it can be extended to arbitrary even dimensions $d\geq 4$. We attempted to make the proof accessible to more readers. Thus we do not assume familiarity with configuration space integrals nor knowledge of finite type invariants. Part of this addendum might be joined to the original article when it will be re-su…
The primary goal of this paper is to find a homotopy theoretic approximation to moduli spaces of holomorphic maps Riemann surfaces into complex projective space. There is a similar treatment of a partial compactification of these moduli spaces of consisting of irreducible stable maps in the sense of Gromov-Witten theory. The arguments follow those from a paper of G. Segal on the topology of the space of rational functions.
Self equivalences of classifying spaces of $p$-local compact groups are well understood by means of the algebraic structure that gives rise to them, but explicit descriptions are lacking. In this paper we use a construction of Robinson of an amalgam $G$, realizing a given fusion system, to produce a split epimorphism from the outer automorphism group of $G$ to the group of homotopy classes of self homotopy equivalences of the classifying space of the corresponding $p$-local compact group.
In [math.AT/9907138] we proved that strongly homotopy algebras are homotopy invariant concepts in the category of chain complexes. Our arguments were based on the fact that strongly homotopy algebras are algebras over minimal cofibrant operads and on the principle that algebras over cofibrant operads are homotopy invariant. In our approach, algebraic models for colored operads describing diagrams of homomorphisms played an important role. The aim of this paper is to give an explicit description of these models. A possible application is an appropriate formulation of the `ideal' homological per…
The use of homological and homotopical devices, such as Tor and André-Quillen homology, have found substantial use in characterizing commutative algebras. The primary category setting has been differentially graded algebras and modules, but recently simplicial categories have also proved to be useful settings. In this paper, we take this point of view up a notch by extending some recent uses of homological algebra in characterizing Noetherian commutative algebras to characterizing simplicial commutative algebras having finite Noetherian homotopy through the use of simplicial homotopy theory. T…
We extend homological perturbation theory to encompass algebraic structures governed by operads and cooperads. The main difficulty is to find a suitable notion of algebra homotopy that generalizes to algebras over operads O. To solve this problem, we introduce what we call thick maps of O-algebras and special thick maps that we call pseudo-derivations, which serve as appropriate generalizations of algebra homotopies for the purposes of homological perturbation theory. As an application, we derive explicit formulas for transferring Cobar(C)-algebra structures along contractions, where C is any …
In this note we show that a $p$-complete nilpotent space $X$ has a $p$-complete suspension spectrum if and only if its homotopy groups $π_*X$ are bounded $p$-torsion. In contrast, if $π_*X$ is not all bounded $p$-torsion, we locate uncountable rational vector spaces in the integral homology and in the stable homotopy groups of $X$. To prove this, we establish a homological criterion for $p$-completeness of connective spectra. Moreover, we illustrate our results by studying the stable homotopy groups of $K(\mathbb{Z}_p,n)$ via Goodwillie calculus.
In this paper we prove two theorems which resemble the classical cohomological and homological Brown representability theorems. The main difference is that our results classify small contravariant functors from spaces to spaces up to weak equivalence of functors. In more detail, we show that every small contravariant functor from spaces to spaces which takes coproducts to products up to homotopy and takes homotopy pushouts to homotopy pullbacks is naturally weekly equivalent to a representable functor. The second representability theorem states: every contravariant continuous functor from the …
An important example of a model category is the category of unbounded chain complexes of R-modules, which has as its homotopy category the derived category of the ring R. This example shows that traditional homological algebra is encompassed by Quillen's homotopical algebra. The goal of this paper is to show that more general forms of homological algebra also fit into Quillen's framework. Specifically, a projective class on a complete and cocomplete abelian category A is exactly the information needed to do homological algebra in A. The main result is that, under weak hypotheses, the category …
We give examples of spaces which are good and bad at different primes in the sense of Bousfield and Kan in any arbitrary combination and investigate which impact the existence of a Sylow $p$-subgroup has on the homotopy type on the classifying space and under which conditions the homotopy type of wedges of classifying spaces is good or bad for a solid ring $R$. We give results relating to various other $R$-homological structures and a collection of examples.
We use homological perturbation machinery specific for the algebra category [P. Real. Homological Perturbation Theory and Associativity. Homology, Homotopy and Applications vol. 2, n. 5 (2000) 51-88] to give an algorithm for computing the differential structure of a small 1--homological model for commutative differential graded algebras (briefly, CDGAs). The complexity of the procedure is studied and a computer package in Mathematica is described for determining such models.
We analyze the homological behavior of the attaching maps in the 2-local Goodwillie tower of the identity evaluated at S^1. We show that they exhibit the same homological behavior as the James-Hopf maps used by N. Kuhn to prove the 2-primary Whitehead conjecture. We use this to prove a calculus form of the Whitehead conjecture: the Whitehead sequence is a contracting homotopy for the Goodwillie tower of S^1 at the prime 2.
We construct a model for cohomology of a space $X$ equipped with a torus $T$ action, whose homotopy orbit space $X_{T}$ is formal. This model represents Koszul complex of its equivariant cohomology. Studying homological properties of modules over polynomial ring we derive new bounds on homological rank (dimension of cohomology ring) of $X$ equipped with almost free torus action. We give a proof of toral rank conjecture for spaces with formal quotient in the case of torus dimension $\le5$.
The present article is devoted to the study of transfers for $A_\infty$ structures, their maps and homotopies, as developed in \cite{Markl06}. In particular, we supply the proofs of claims formulated therein and provide their extension by comparing them with the former approach based on the homological perturbation lemma.
Classical homological algebra takes place in additive categories. In homotopy theory such additive categories arise as homotopy categories of ``additive groupoid enriched categories'', in which a secondary analog of homological algebra can be performed. We introduce secondary chain complexes and secondary resolutions leading to the concept of secondary derived functors. As a main result we show that the E_3-term of the Adams spectral sequence can be expressed as a secondary derived functor. This result can be used to compute the E_3-term explicitly by an algorithm.
We show that the space of chains of smooth maps from spheres into a fixed compact oriented manifold has a natural structure of a transversal $d$-algebra. We construct a structure of transversal 1-category on the space of chains of maps from a suspension space $S(Y)$, with certain boundary restrictions, into a fixed compact oriented manifold. We define homological quantum field theories \HL and construct several examples of such structures. Our definition is based on the notions of string topology of Chas and Sullivan, and homotopy quantum field theories of Turaev.
We prove that the factorization homologies of a scheme with coefficients in truncated polynomial algebras compute the cohomologies of its generalized configuration spaces. Using Koszul duality between commutative algebras and Lie algebras, we obtain new expressions for the cohomologies of the latter. As a consequence, we obtain a uniform and conceptual approach for treating homological stability, homological densities, and arithmetic densities of generalized configuration spaces. Our results categorify, generalize, and in fact provide a conceptual understanding of the coincidences appearing in…
Building on Quillen's rational homotopy theory, we obtain algebraic models for the rational homotopy theory of parametrised spectra. For any simply-connected space $X$ there is a dg Lie algebra $Λ_X$ and a (coassociative cocommutative) dg coalgebra $C_X$ that model the rational homotopy type. In this article, we prove that the rational homotopy type of an $X$-parametrised spectrum is completely encoded by a $Λ_X$-representation and also by a $C_X$-comodule. The correspondence between rational parametrised spectra and algebraic data is obtained by means of symmetric monoidal equivalences of hom…
Starting from a biased definition of a properad, we describe explicitly algebras over the cobar construction of a properad. Equivalent description in terms of solutions of generalized master equations, which can be interpreted as homological differential operators, are explained from the properadic point of view. This is parallel to the Barannikov's theory for modular operads. In addition to well known IBL-homotopy algebras, the examples include their associative analogues, which we call $IBA$-homotopy algebras, and a combination of the above two.
Given a graded $E_1$-module over an $E_2$-algebra in spaces, we construct an augmented semi-simplicial space up to higher coherent homotopy over it, called its canonical resolution, whose graded connectivity yields homological stability for the graded pieces of the module with respect to constant and abelian coefficients. We furthermore introduce a notion of coefficient systems of finite degree in this context and show that, without further assumptions, the corresponding twisted homology groups stabilize as well. This generalizes a framework of Randal-Williams and Wahl for families of discrete…
We construct a zig-zag from the once delooped space of pseudoisotopies of a closed $2n$-disc to the once looped algebraic $K$-theory space of the integers and show that the maps involved are $p$-locally $(2n-4)$-connected for $n>3$ and large primes $p$. The proof uses the computation of the stable homology of the moduli space of high-dimensional handlebodies due to Botvinnik--Perlmutter and is independent of the classical approach to pseudoisotopy theory based on Igusa's stability theorem and work of Waldhausen. Combined with a result of Randal-Williams, one consequence of this identification …
Let A be a graded-commutative, connected k-algebra generated in degree 1. The homotopy Lie algebra g_A is defined to be the Lie algebra of primitives of the Yoneda algebra, Ext_A(k,k). Under certain homological assumptions on A and its quadratic closure, we express g_A as a semi-direct product of the well-understood holonomy Lie algebra h_A with a certain h_A-module. This allows us to compute the homotopy Lie algebra associated to the cohomology ring of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, provided some combinatorial assumptions are satisfied. As an application, we give examples…
Let X be a simply connected Riemannian manifold. Until now, quantitative topology has used Sullivan's rational homotopy theory as the bridge between geometric information on X and torsion-free homotopy theoretic information on X. In this paper we introduce Chen's iterated integrals on the based loop space of X as a new bridge between these two areas. We give two applications: finding upper bounds for Gromov's distortion of higher homotopy groups on X and also proving the non-existence of homologically non-trivial small-volume cycles in the space of loops on X of length at most L.
Quantum Chern-Simons invariants of differentiable manifolds are analyzed from the point of view of homological algebra. Given a manifold M and a Lie (or, more generally, an L-infinity) algebra g, the vector space H^*(M) \otimes g has the structure of an L-infinity algebra whose homotopy type is a homotopy invariant of M. We formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for this L-infinity algebra to have a quantum lift. We also obtain structural results on unimodular L-infinity algebras and introduce a doubling construction which links unimodular and cyclic L-infinity algebras.
As a step towards establishing homotopy-theoretic foundations for topological data analysis (TDA), we introduce and study homotopy interleavings between filtered topological spaces. These are homotopy-invariant analogues of interleavings, objects commonly used in TDA to articulate stability and inference theorems. Intuitively, whereas a strict interleaving between filtered spaces $X$ and $Y$ certifies that $X$ and $Y$ are approximately isomorphic, a homotopy interleaving between $X$ and $Y$ certifies that $X$ and $Y$ are approximately weakly equivalent. The main results of this paper are that …
This master's thesis contains an introduction to $A_\infty$-algebras and homological perturbation theory. We then discuss the formality of compact Kähler manifolds and present a direct proof of a homotopy transfer principle of $A_\infty$-algebras, also known as Kadeishvili's Theorem.
We continue our investigation of spaces of long embeddings (long embeddings are high-dimensional analogues of long knots). In previous work we showed that when the dimensions are in the stable range, the rational homology groups of these spaces can be calculated as the homology of a direct sum of certain finite graph-complexes, which we described explicitly. In this paper, we establish a similar result for the rational homotopy groups of these spaces. We also put emphasis on different ways how the calculations can be done. In particular we describe three different graph-complexes computing the…
Exact sequences are a well known notion in homological algebra. We investigate here the more vague properties of 'homotopical exactness', appearing for instance in the fibre or cofibre sequence of a map. Such notions of exactness can be given for very general 'categories with homotopies' having homotopy kernels and cokernels, but become more interesting under suitable stability hypotheses, satisfied - in particular - by chain complexes. It is then possible to measure the default of homotopical exactness of a sequence by the homotopy type of a certain object, a sort of 'homotopical homology'.
Using the theory of extensions of L-infinity algebras, we construct rational homotopy models for classifying spaces of fibrations, giving answers in terms of classical homological functors, namely the Chevalley-Eilenberg and Harrison cohomology. We also investigate the algebraic structure of the Chevalley-Eilenberg complexes of L-infinity algebras and show that they possess, along with the Gerstenhaber bracket, an L-infinity structure that is homotopy abelian.
In this paper we discuss various aspects of open-closed homotopy algebras (OCHAs) presented in our previous paper, inspired by Zwiebach's open-closed string field theory, but that first paper concentrated on the mathematical aspects. Here we show how an OCHA is obtained by extracting the tree part of Zwiebach's quantum open-closed string field theory. We clarify the explicit relation of an OCHA with Kontsevich's deformation quantization and with the B-models of homological mirror symmetry. An explicit form of the minimal model for an OCHA is given as well as its relation to the perturbative ex…
Let X and Y be finite-type CW-complexes (X connected, Y simply connected), such that the rational cohomology ring of Y is a k-rescaling of the rational cohomology ring of X. Assume H^*(X,Q) is a Koszul algebra. Then, the homotopy Lie algebra pi_*(Omega Y) tensor Q equals, up to k-rescaling, the graded rational Lie algebra associated to the lower central series of pi_1(X). If Y is a formal space, this equality is actually equivalent to the Koszulness of H^*(X,Q). If X is formal (and only then), the equality lifts to a filtered isomorphism between the Malcev completion of pi_1(X) and the complet…
