We extend homological perturbation theory to encompass algebraic structures governed by operads and cooperads. The main difficulty is to find a suitable notion of algebra homotopy that generalizes to algebras over operads O. To solve this problem, we introduce what we call thick maps of O-algebras and special thick maps that we call pseudo-derivations, which serve as appropriate generalizations of algebra homotopies for the purposes of homological perturbation theory.
As an application, we derive explicit formulas for transferring Cobar(C)-algebra structures along contractions, where C is any connected cooperad in chain complexes. This specializes to transfer formulas for O-infinity algebras for any Koszul operad O, in particular for A-infinity, C-infinity, L-infinity and G-infinity algebras. A key feature is that our formulas are expressed in terms of the compact description of Cobar(C)-algebras as coderivation differentials on cofree C-coalgebras. Moreover, we get formulas not only for the transferred structure and a structure on the inclusion, but also for structures on the projection and the homotopy.
We construct small cylinders for cellular non-symmetric DG-operads over an arbitrary commutative ring by using the basic perturbation lemma from homological algebra. We show that our construction, applied to the A-infinity operad, yields the operad parametrizing A-infinity maps whose linear part is the identity. We also compute some other examples with non-trivial operations in arities 1 and 0.
Motivated by the operad built from moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, we consider a general class of operads in the category of spaces that satisfy certain homological stability conditions. We prove that such operads are infinite loop space operads in the sense that the group completions of their algebras are infinite loop spaces. The recent, strong homological stability results of Galatius and Randal-Williams for moduli spaces of even dimensional manifolds can be used to construct examples of operads with homological stability. As a consequence the map to $K$-theory defined by the action of t…
We show that the little discs operad $D_2$ is not formal over $\mathbb{F}_2$ as a planar (or non-symmetric) operad. We compute explicitly the homological obstruction using as chain model the cells of the spineless cacti operad
Theorem 6.1.1 of [H.A.H.A.] on the existence of a model structure on the category of operads is not valid in the generality claimed. We present here a counter-example (due to B. Fresse) and a corrected version of the theorem.
We show a homological result for the class of planar or symmetric operad groups: We show that under certain conditions, group (co)homology of such groups with certain coefficients vanishes in all dimensions, provided it vanishes in dimension $0$. This can be applied for example to $l^2$-homology or cohomology with coefficients in the group ring. As a corollary, we obtain explicit vanishing results for Thompson-like groups such as the Brin-Thompson groups $nV$.
In this paper we prove that, in the category of chain complexes, partial algebras can be functorially replaced by quasi-isomorphic algebras. In particular, partial algebras contain all of the important homological and homotopical information that genuine algebras do. Applying this result to McClure's partial algebra in [6] shows that the chains of a PL-manifold are quasi-isomorphic to an E-infinity algebra.
Using homological perturbation theory, we develop a formal version of the miniversal deformation associated with a deformation problem controlled by a differential graded Lie algebra over a field of characteristic zero. Our approach includes a formal version of the Kuranishi method in the theory of deformations of complex manifolds.
Several topological and homological operads based on families of projectively weighted arcs in bounded surfaces are introduced and studied. The spaces underlying the basic operad are identified with open subsets of a compactification due to Penner of a space closely related to Riemann's moduli space. Algebras over these operads are shown to be Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras, where the entire BV structure is realized simplicially. Furthermore, our basic operad contains the cacti operad up to homotopy, and it similarly acts on the loop space of any topological space. New operad structures on the ci…
We prove a general version of the homological perturbation lemma which works in the presence of curvature, and without the restriction to strong deformation retracts, building on work of Markl. A key observation is that the notion of strong homotopy equivalence of complexes (or objects in an abstract dg category) has a natural expression in the language of curved twisted complexes.
In [math.AT/9907138] we proved that strongly homotopy algebras are homotopy invariant concepts in the category of chain complexes. Our arguments were based on the fact that strongly homotopy algebras are algebras over minimal cofibrant operads and on the principle that algebras over cofibrant operads are homotopy invariant. In our approach, algebraic models for colored operads describing diagrams of homomorphisms played an important role. The aim of this paper is to give an explicit description of these models. A possible application is an appropriate formulation of the `ideal' homological per…
We explain how deformation theories of geometric objects such as complex structures, Poisson structures and holomorphic bundle structures lead to differential Gerstenhaber or Poisson algebras. We use homological perturbation theory to obtain $A_{\infty}$ algebra structures and some canonically defined deformations of such structures on the cohomology. We formulate the $A_{\infty}$ algebraic mirror symmetry as the identification of the $A_{\infty}$ algebras together with their canonical deformations constructed this way on different manifolds.
We use homological perturbation machinery specific for the algebra category [P. Real. Homological Perturbation Theory and Associativity. Homology, Homotopy and Applications vol. 2, n. 5 (2000) 51-88] to give an algorithm for computing the differential structure of a small 1--homological model for commutative differential graded algebras (briefly, CDGAs). The complexity of the procedure is studied and a computer package in Mathematica is described for determining such models.
Our main objective is to demonstrate how homological perturbation theory (HPT) results over the last 40 years immediately or with little extra work give some of the Koszul duality results that have appeared in the last decade. Higher homotopies typically arise when a huge object, e. g. a chain complex defining various invariants of a certain geometric situation, is cut to a small model, and the higher homotopies can then be dealt with concisely in the language of sh-structures (strong homotopy structures). This amounts to precise ways of handling the requisite additional structure encapsulatin…
We have one more look at the (homological) perturbation lemma and we point out some non-standard consequences, including the relevance to deformations.
This text was written and used for a MAP Summer School at the University of Genova, August 28 to September 2, 2006. Available since then on the web site of the second author, it has been used and referenced by several colleagues working in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Topology. To make safer such references, it was suggested to place it on the Arxiv repository. It is a relatively detailed exposition of the use of the Basic Perturbation Lemma to make constructive Homological Algebra (standard Homological Algebra is not constructive) and how this technology can be used in Commutative Algebr…
This work is dedicated to some new exotic homological constructions associated with the different Morse-type inequalities for differential forms and vector fields. It contains also survey of ideas developed by the present author in 1986 for this goal.
This master's thesis contains an introduction to $A_\infty$-algebras and homological perturbation theory. We then discuss the formality of compact Kähler manifolds and present a direct proof of a homotopy transfer principle of $A_\infty$-algebras, also known as Kadeishvili's Theorem.
Let R be a local ring and A a connected differential graded algebra over R which is free as a graded R-module. Using homological perturbation theory techniques, we construct a minimal free multi model for A having properties similar to that of an ordinary minimal model over a field; in particular the model is unique up to isomorphism of multialgebras. The attribute multi refers to the category of multicomplexes.
We construct a solution of the master equation by means of standard tools from homological perturbation theory under just the hypothesis that the ground field be of characteristic zero, thereby avoiding the formality assumption of the relevant Lie algebra. To this end we endow the homology H(g) of any differential graded Lie algebra g with an sh-Lie structure such that g and H(g) are sh-equivalent. We discuss our solution of the master equation in the context of deformation theory. Given the extra structure appropriate to the extended moduli space of complex structures on a Calabi-Yau manifold…
We set up an algebraic framework for the study of pseudoholomorphic discs bounding nonorientable Lagrangians, as well as equivariant extensions of such structures arising from a torus action. First, we define unital cyclic twisted $A_\infty$ algebras and prove some basic results about them, including a homological perturbation lemma which allows one to construct minimal models of such algebras. We then construct an equivariant extension of $A_\infty$ algebras which are invariant under a torus action on the underlying complex. Finally, we construct a homotopy retraction of the Cartan-Weil compl…
