We study generating functions of moduli-space integrals at genus one that are expected to form a basis for massless $n$-point one-loop amplitudes of open superstrings and open bosonic strings. These integrals are shown to satisfy the same type of linear and homogeneous first-order differential equation w.r.t. the modular parameter $τ$ which is known from the A-elliptic Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov--Bernard associator. The expressions for their $τ$-derivatives take a universal form for the integration cycles in planar and non-planar one-loop open-string amplitudes. These differential equations manifest the uniformly transcendental appearance of iterated integrals over holomorphic Eisenstein series in the low-energy expansion w.r.t. the inverse string tension $α'$. In fact, we are led to matrix representations of certain derivations dual to Eisenstein series. Like this, also the $α'$-expansion of non-planar integrals is manifestly expressible in terms of iterated Eisenstein integrals without referring to twisted elliptic multiple zeta values. The degeneration of the moduli-space integrals at $τ\rightarrow i\infty$ is expressed in terms of their genus-zero analogues -- $(n{+}2)$-point Parke--Taylor integrals over disk boundaries. Our results yield a compact formula for $α'$-expansions of $n$-point integrals over boundaries of cylinder- or Moebius-strip worldsheets, where any desired order is accessible from elementary operations.
We compute the normalization of the general multi-instanton contribution to the partition function of $(p',p)$ minimal string theory and also to the dual two-matrix integral. We find perfect agreement between the two results.
We study cluster algebras for some all-loop Feynman integrals, including box-ladder, penta-box-ladder, and (seven-point) double-penta-ladder integrals. In addition to the well-known box ladder whose symbol alphabet is $D_2\simeq A_1^2$, we show that penta-box ladder has an alphabet of $D_3\simeq A_3$ and provide strong evidence that the alphabet of double-penta ladder can be identified with a $D_4$ cluster algebra. We relate the symbol letters to the ${\bf u}$ variables of cluster configuration space, which provide a gauge-invariant description of the cluster algebra, and we find various sub-a…
In this paper, we present the universal structure of the alphabet of one-loop Feynman integrals. The letters in the alphabet are calculated using the Baikov representation with cuts. We consider both convergent and divergent cut integrals and observe that letters in the divergent cases can be easily obtained from convergent cases by applying certain limits. The letters are written as simple expressions in terms of various Gram determinants. The knowledge of the alphabet enables us to easily construct the canonical differential equations of the $ d\log $ form and aids in bootstrapping the symbo…
We derive analytic results for the symbol of certain two-loop Feynman integrals relevant for seven- and eight-point two-loop scattering amplitudes in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang--Mills theory. We use a bootstrap inspired strategy, combined with a set of second-order partial differential equations that provide powerful constraints on the symbol ansatz. When the complete symbol alphabet is not available, we adopt a hybrid approach. Instead of the full function, we bootstrap a certain discontinuity for which the alphabet is known. Then we write a one-fold dispersion integral to recover the …
We evaluate four-gauge-particle tree level scattering amplitudes using the Polyakov string path integral in the proper-time gauge, where the string path integral can be cast into the Feynman-Schwinger proper-time representation. We compare the resultant scattering amplitudes, which include $\ap$-corrections, with the conventional ones that may be obtained by substituting local vertex operators for the external string states. In the zero-slope limit, both amplitudes are reduced to the four-gauge-particle scattering amplitude of non-Abelian Yang-Mills gauge theory. However, when the string corre…
Integrals of periodic motion and periodic solutions for classical equations of relativistic string with masses at ends. I. Integrals of periodic motion
We present a new method to evaluate the $α'$-expansion of genus-one integrals over open-string punctures and unravel the structure of the elliptic multiple zeta values in its coefficients. This is done by obtaining a simple differential equation of Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard-type satisfied by generating functions of such integrals, and solving it via Picard iteration. The initial condition involves the generating functions at the cusp $τ\to i\infty$ and can be reduced to genus-zero integrals.
We continue our investigation of Z-theory, the second double-copy component of open-string tree-level interactions besides super-Yang-Mills (sYM). We show that the amplitudes of the extended non-linear sigma model (NLSM) recently considered by Cachazo, Cha, and Mizera are reproduced by the leading alpha'-order of Z-theory amplitudes in the semi-abelian case. The extension refers to a coupling of NLSM pions to bi-adjoint scalars, and the semi-abelian case involves to a partial symmetrization over one of the color orderings that characterize the Z-theory amplitudes. Alternatively, the partial sy…

In this letter, we provide evidence for universality in the low-energy expansion of tree-level string interactions. More precisely, in the alpha'-expansion of tree-level scattering amplitudes, we conjecture that the leading transcendental coefficient at each order in alpha' is universal for all perturbative string theories. We have checked this universality up to seven points and trace its origin to the ability to restructure the disk integrals of open bosonic string into those of the superstring. The accompanying kinematic functions have the same low-energy limit and do not introduce any tran…

We continue the study of positive geometries underlying the {\it Grassmannian string integrals}, which are a class of "stringy canonical forms", or stringy integrals, over the positive Grassmannian mod torus action, $G_+(k,n)/T$. The leading order of any such stringy integral is given by the canonical function of a polytope, which can be obtained using the Minkowski sum of the Newton polytopes for the regulators of the integral, or equivalently given by the so-called scattering-equation map. The canonical function of the polytopes for Grassmannian string integrals, or the volume of their dual …
Integrability, spin-chains and the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence
In this paper we derive the tree-level S-matrix of the effective theory of Goldstone bosons known as the non-linear sigma model (NLSM) from string theory. This novel connection relies on a recent realization of tree-level open-superstring S-matrix predictions as a double copy of super-Yang-Mills theory with Z-theory --- the collection of putative scalar effective field theories encoding all the alpha'-dependence of the open superstring. Here we identify the color-ordered amplitudes of the NLSM as the low-energy limit of abelian Z-theory. This realization also provides natural higher-derivative…
We derive the first law of black hole mechanics in the context of the Heterotic Superstring effective action to first order in alpha prime using Wald's formalism. We carefully take into account all the symmetries of the theory and, as a result, we obtain a manifestly gauge- and Lorentz-invariant entropy formula in which all the terms can be computed explicitly. An entropy formula with these properties allows unambiguous calculations of macroscopic black-hole entropies to first order in alpha prime that can be reliably used in a comparison with the microscopic ones. Such a formula was still lac…
We introduce the notion of "binary" positive and complex geometries, giving a completely rigid geometric realization of the combinatorics of generalized associahedra attached to any Dynkin diagram. We also define open and closed "cluster string integrals" associated with these "cluster configuration spaces". The binary geometry of type ${\cal A}$ gives a gauge-invariant description of the usual open and closed string moduli spaces for tree scattering, making no explicit reference to a worldsheet. The binary geometries and cluster string integrals for other Dynkin types provide a generalization…
This paper applies the phase-integral method to the stationary theory of alpha-decay. The rigorous form of the connection formulae, and their one-directional nature that was not widely known in the physical literature, are applied. The condition for obtaining s-wave metastable states affects the stationary state at large distance from the nucleus, which is dominated by the cosine of the phase integral minus (pi over 4). Accurate predictions for the lowest s-wave metastable state and mean life of the radioactive nucleus are obtained in the case of Uranium. The final part of the paper describes …
We re-derive the first law of black hole mechanics in the context of the Heterotic Superstring effective action compactified on a torus to leading order in alpha prime, using Wald's formalism, covariant Lie derivatives and momentum maps. The Kalb-Ramond field strength of this theory has Abelian Chern-Simons terms which induce Nicolai-Townsend transformations of the Kalb-Ramond field. We show how to deal with all these gauge symmetries deriving the first law in terms of manifestly gauge-invariant quantities. In presence of Chern-Simons terms, several definitions of the conserved charges exist, …
We investigate generating functions for the integrals over world-sheet tori appearing in closed-string one-loop amplitudes of bosonic, heterotic and type-II theories. These closed-string integrals are shown to obey homogeneous and linear differential equations in the modular parameter of the torus. We spell out the first-order Cauchy-Riemann and second-order Laplace equations for the generating functions for any number of external states. The low-energy expansion of such torus integrals introduces infinite families of non-holomorphic modular forms known as modular graph forms. Our results gene…
We initiate the study of cluster algebras in Feynman integrals in dimensional regularization. We provide evidence that four-point Feynman integrals with one off-shell leg are described by a $C_{2}$ cluster algebra, and we find cluster adjacency relations that restrict the allowed function space. By embedding $C_{2}$ inside the $A_3$ cluster algebra, we identify these adjacencies with the extended Steinmann relations for six-particle massless scattering. The cluster algebra connection we find restricts the functions space for vector boson or Higgs plus jet amplitudes, and for form factors recen…
Based on general mathematical assumptions we give an independent, elementary derivation of a theorem by Francis Brown and Clément Dupont which states that tree-level amplitudes of closed and open strings are related through the single-valued map `sv'. This relation can be traced back to the underlying moduli-space integrals over punctured Riemann surfaces of genus zero. The sphere integrals $J$ in closed-string amplitudes and the disk integrals $Z$ in open-string amplitudes are shown to obey $J = {\rm sv} \, Z$.
String geometry theory is one of the candidates of the non-perturbative formulation of string theory. In this paper, from the closed bosonic sector of string geometry theory, we derive path integrals of all order perturbative strings on all the string backgrounds, $G_{μν}(x)$, $B_{μν}(x)$, and $Φ(x)$, by considering fluctuations around the string background configurations, which are parametrized by the string backgrounds.
