We study aspects of d-dimensional black holes with two electric charges, corresponding to fundamental strings with generic momentum and winding on an internal circle. The perturbative alpha' corrections to such black holes and their gravitational thermodynamics are obtained. The latter are derived using the Euclidean approach and the Wald formula for the entropy. We find that the entropy and the charge/mass ratio of black holes increase in alpha' for any mass and charges, and in all dimensions.
We consider asymptotically AdS black hole solutions in presence of string clouds and higher derivative corrections. We find that it admits three black hole solutions within a region of the parameter space. In order to examine the stabilities of these solutions we consider a thermodynamic analysis. Using holography, we have studied the quark-antiquark distance and binding energy in the dual gauge theory.
We construct the first rotating string solution in 6-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet supergravity, carrying both electric and magnetic charges. By embedding the known rotating string solution of the 2-derivative theory into 6-dimensional off-shell supergravity, the Killing spinors associated with the underlying supersymmetry can be made off-shell and are universal to all off-shell supergravity models based on the same field content. The near-horizon geometry is S^3 fibred over the extremal BTZ black hole, locally isomorphic to AdS_3*S^3. We compute the higher-derivative corrections to the Br…
We study four-derivative corrections to pure $\mathcal{N}=2$, $D=5$ gauged supergravity. In particular, we find that, up to field redefinitions, there is a single four-derivative superinvariant that one can add to the action, up to factors of the two-derivative action. Consequently, this selects out a unique set of coefficients for the four-derivative corrections. We confirm these coefficients (in the ungauged limit) on the BMPV solution.
In an effective field theory approach to gravity, the Einstein-Hilbert action is supplemented by higher derivative terms. In the absence of matter, four derivative terms can be eliminated by a field redefinition. We use the Euclidean action to calculate analytically the corrections to thermodynamic quantities of the Kerr solution arising from terms with six or eight derivatives. The eight derivative terms make a non-negative correction to the entropy (at fixed mass and angular momentum) if their coefficients have appropriate signs. The correction from the six derivative terms does not have a d…
We calculate the vacuum fluctuation of the stress tensor of a higher-derivative theory around a thin cosmic string. To this end, we adopt the method to obtain the stress tensor from the effective action developed by Gibbons et al. By their method, the quantum stress tensor of higher-derivative scalar theories without self-interaction is expressed as a simple sum of quantum stress tensors of free massive scalar fields. Unlike the vacuum expectation value of the scalar field squared obtained in the similar model, there appears no reduction of the values near the conical singularity.
We compute the tree-level $H^2R^3$ couplings of type II strings and provide some basic tests of the couplings by considering both K3 and Calabi-Yau threefold compactifications. Curiously, additional kinematical structures show up at tree level that are not present in the one-loop couplings. This has interesting implications for type II supersymmetry as well as $SL(2, \mathbb Z)$ duality in type IIB strings.
We study the vacuum structures of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 1$ old minimal supergravity with higher derivative corrections. We find that $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supergravity with Riemann curvature square corrections and higher derivative matter chiral multiplets induces a non-trivial de Sitter vacuum, even in the absence of superpotentials. This vacuum generically breaks supersymmetry. We show that the auxiliary fields in the gravity and the chiral multiples play important roles to generate a potential in supersymmetric higher derivative theories.
We derive formulas for the leading mass, entropy, and long-range self-force corrections to extremal black holes due to higher-derivative operators. These formulas hold for black holes with arbitrary couplings to gauge fields and moduli, provided that the leading-order solutions are static, spherically-symmetric, extremal, and have nonzero horizon area. To use these formulas, both the leading-order black hole solution and the higher-derivative effective action must be known, but there is no need to solve the derivative-corrected equations of motion. We demonstrate that the mass, entropy and sel…
The open string field theory of Witten (SFT) has a close formal similarity with Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions. This similarity is due to the fact that the former theory has concepts corresponding to forms, exterior derivative, wedge product and integration over the manifold. In this paper, we introduce the interior product and the Lie derivative in the $KBc$ subsector of SFT. The interior product in SFT is specified by a two-component "tangent vector" and lowers the ghost number by one (like the ordinary interior product maps a $p$-form to $(p-1)$-form). The Lie derivative in SFT is …
