Using AdS/CFT correspondence and the Euclidean action formalism for black hole entropy Kraus and Larsen have argued that the entropy of a BTZ black hole in three dimensional supergravity with (0,4) supersymmetry does not receive any correction from higher derivative terms in the action. We argue that as a consequence of AdS/CFT correspondence the action of a three dimensional supergravity with (0,4) supersymmetry cannot receive any higher derivative correction except for those which can be removed by field redefinition. The non-renormalization of the entropy then follows as a consequence of this and the invariance of Wald's formula under a field redefinition.
We consider four-derivative corrections to the bosonic sector of five-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity. Since this theory includes the N=2 graviphoton, we consider both curvature and graviphoton field-strength terms that show up at the four-derivative level. We construct, to linear order, the higher-derivative corrections to the non-rotating R-charged AdS_5 black hole and demonstrate how this solution transforms under field redefinitions.
Higher derivative bulk gravity (without Riemann tensor square term) admits AdS-Schwarzschild black hole as exact solution. It is shown that induced brane geometry on such background is open, flat or closed FRW radiation dominated Universe. Higher derivative terms contributions appear in the Hawking temperature, entropy and Hubble parameter via the redefinition of 5-dimensional gravitational constant and AdS scale parameter. These higher derivative terms do not destroy the AdS-dual description of radiation represented by strongly-coupled CFT. Cardy-Verlinde formula which expresses cosmological …
We consider asymptotically AdS black hole solutions in presence of string clouds and higher derivative corrections. We find that it admits three black hole solutions within a region of the parameter space. In order to examine the stabilities of these solutions we consider a thermodynamic analysis. Using holography, we have studied the quark-antiquark distance and binding energy in the dual gauge theory.
We investigate the AdS/CFT correspondence for higher-derivative gravity systems, and develop a formalism in which the generating functional of the boundary field theory is given as a functional that depends only on the boundary values of bulk fields. We also derive a Hamilton-Jacobi-like equation that uniquely determines the generating functional, and give an algorithm calculating the Weyl anomaly. Using the expected duality between a higher-derivative gravity system and N=2 superconformal field theory in four dimensions, we demonstrate that the resulting Weyl anomaly is consistent with the fi…
An action for the higher-derivative corrections to minimal gauged supergravity in four dimensions has been recently proposed. We demonstrate that the supersymmetric solutions of this model are those of the two-derivative action, and investigate some of their properties. In particular, we prove a formula for the renormalised on-shell action in terms of contributions from fixed points of a $U(1)$ action, and confirm that it is invariant under deformations which preserve the boundary almost contact structure.
We study four-derivative corrections to four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity and show that they are controlled by two real constants. The solutions of the equations of motion in the two-derivative theory are not modified by the higher-derivative corrections. We use this to derive a general formula for the regularized on-shell action for any asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ solution of the theory and show how the higher-derivative corrections affect black hole thermodynamic quantities in a universal way. We employ our results in the context of holography to derive explicit…
Employing the coset approach we construct component actions for a superparticle moving in AdS$_3$ with $N{=}(2,0)$, $D{=}3$ supersymmetry partially broken to $N{=}2$, $d{=}1$. These actions may contain higher time-derivative terms, which are chosen to possess the same (super)symmetries as the free superparticle. In terms of the nonlinear-realization superfields, the component actions always take a simpler form when written in terms of covariant Cartan forms. We also consider in detail the reduction to the nonrelativistic case and construct the corresponding action a Newton-Hooke superparticle …
We consider warped AdS_3 black holes in generic higher derivatives gravity theories in 2+1 dimensions. The asymptotic symmetry group of the phase space containing these black holes is the semi-direct product of a centrally extended Virasoro algebra and an affine u(1) Kac-Moody algebra. Previous works have shown that in some specific theories, the entropy of these black holes agrees with a Cardy-like entropy formula derived for warped conformal field theories. In this paper, we show that this entropy matching continues to hold for the most general higher derivative theories of gravity. We also …
We investigate the behaviors of holographic entanglement entropy for AdS soliton geometries in the presence of higher derivative corrections. We calculate the leading higher derivative corrections for the AdS5 setup in type IIB string and for the AdS4,7 ones in M-theory. We also study the holographic entanglement entropy in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and study how the confinement/deconfinement phase transition observed in AdS solitons is affected by the higher derivative corrections.
We follow to Witten proposal in the calculation of conformal anomaly from d+1-dimensional higher derivative gravity via AdS/CFT correspondence. It is assumed that some d-dimensional conformal field theories have a description in terms of above d+1-dimensional higher derivative gravity which includes not only Einstein term and cosmological constant but also curvature squared terms. The explicit expression for two-dimensional and four-dimensional anomalies is found, it contains higher derivative corrections. In particular, it is shown that not only Einstein gravity but also theory with the Lagra…
We calculate the correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula for five dimensional AdS-Schwarzschild black holes due to thermodynamic fluctuations. The result is then compared with the boundary gauge theory entropy corrections via AdS/CFT correspondence. We then further generalise our analysis for the rotating black hole in five dimensional AdS space.
We study four-derivative corrections to 5d $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity using tools from conformal supergravity. There are two supersymmetric invariants at the four-derivative order and we show explicitly how to write down the action in the Poincaré frame in terms of their coefficients. We apply our results in the context of holography where the four-derivative terms in the supergravity action translate into corrections to the conformal anomalies of the dual 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT. We use these results to study corrections to the entropy of the supersymmetric black string solut…
We use conformal supergravity techniques to study four-derivative corrections in four-dimensional gauged supergravity. We show that the four-derivative Lagrangian for the propagating degrees of freedom of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ gravity multiplet is determined by two real dimensionless constants. We demonstrate that all solutions of the two-derivative equations of motion in the supergravity theory also solve the four-derivative equations of motion. These results are then applied to explicitly calculate the regularized on-shell action for any asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ solution of the two-deriv…
We compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of a magnetically charged extremal black hole in AdS4 x S7 using the quantum entropy function and discuss the possibility of matching against recently derived microscopic expressions.
We study the role of higher derivative terms (Riemann curvature squared ones) in thermodynamics of SCFTs via AdS/CFT correspondence. Using IIB string effective action (d5 AdS gravity) with such HD terms deduced from heterotic string via duality we calculate strong coupling limit of ${\cal N}=2$ SCFT free energy with the account of next to leading term in large $N$ expansion. It is compared with perturbative result following from boundary QFT. Considering modification of such action where HD terms form Weyl squared tensor we found (strong coupling limit) free energy in such theory. It is intere…
We compute coefficients of two-derivative terms in the hydrodynamic energy momentum tensor of a viscous fluid which has an AdS_D dual with D between 3 and 7. For the case of D=3 we obtain an exact AdS_3 black hole solution, valid to all orders in a derivative expansion, dual to a perfect fluid in 1+1 dimensions.
We calculate small correction terms to gravitational potential on Randall-Sundrum brane with an induced Einstein term. The behaviors of the correction terms depend on the magnitudes of $AdS$ radius $k^{-1}$ and a characteristic length scale $ł$ of model. We represent the gravitational potential for arbitrary $k$ and $ł$ at all distances.
We study giant magnon solutions in AdS4 \times CP3. We compute quantum corrections to their dispersion relation. We find out that the one--loop correction vanishes in infinite volume. This implies that the interpolating function h(λ) between strong and weak coupling regimes does not have a constant term λ^0 at strong coupling. We also compute first nonvanishing finite volume correction to the one--loop expression. When compared to the Lüsher formula, our results could provide a nontrivial check of the AdS4 \times CP3 S--matrix proposed recently in arXiv:0807.1924.
Stringy corrections in AdS/CFT generally fall into the category of either α' effects or string loop effects, corresponding to 1/λand 1/N corrections, respectively, in the dual field theory. While α'^3R^4 corrections have been well studied, at least in the context of N=4 super-Yang-Mills, less is known about the 1/N^2 corrections arising from closed string loops. In this paper, we consider AdS_5 x SE_5 compactifications of the IIB string, and compute the closed string loop correction to the anomaly coefficients a and c in the dual field theory. For T^{1,1} reductions, we find the string loop co…
We compute four-derivative corrections to the AdS supergravity actions arising from the near-horizon geometry of N M5-branes wrapped on either one or two Riemann surfaces. This setup features the novel presence of both gauged isometries as well as nontrivial hypermultiplets. We argue that the 5d Chern-Simons terms receive not only higher-derivative corrections but also contributions from Killing vector parameters, which we find must also be corrected. We check the central charges found by our supergravity methods against the dual field theory results and find perfect agreement at leading and s…
In integrable quantum field theories the large volume spectrum is given by the Bethe Ansatz. The leading corrections, due to virtual particles circulating around the cylinder, are encoded in so-called Luscher corrections. In order to apply these techniques to the AdS/CFT correspondence one has to generalize these corrections to the case of generic dispersion relations and to multiparticle states. We review these various generalizations and the applications of Luscher's corrections to the study of the worldsheet QFT of the superstring in AdS5xS5 and, consequently, to anomalous dimensions of ope…
We calculate the absorption cross section by studying the spin--dependent wave equation in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space(AdS$_3$). Here the AdS/CFT correspondence is used. It turns out that the new gauge bosons coupled to (2,0) and (0,2) operators on the boundary at infinity receive logarithmic corrections. This shows that the gauge bosons may play the role of singletons in AdS$_5$. On the other hand, test fields including the intermediate scalars($η, ξ$) and fixed scalar($λ$) do not receive any logarithmic correction in the first-order approximation.
We discuss the string corrections to one-loop amplitudes in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, focussing on their expressions in Mellin space. We present the leading $(α')^3$ corrections to the family of correlators $\langle \mathcal{O}_2 \mathcal{O}_2 \mathcal{O}_p \mathcal{O}_p \rangle$ at one loop and begin the exploration of the form of correlators with multiple channels. From these correlators we extract some string corrections to one-loop anomalous dimensions of families of operators of low twist.
We propose formulas for the Lüscher type finite size energy correction of multiparticle states on the interval and evaluate them for the simplest case in the AdS/CFT setting. By this we determine the leading wrapping correction to the anomalous dimension of the simplest determinant type operator, which corresponds to a one particle state on the Y=0 brane.
We analyze higher derivative corrections to attractor geometries in five dimensions. We find corrected AdS_3xS^2 geometries by solving the equations of motion coming from a recently constructed four-derivative supergravity action in five dimensions. The result allows us to explicitly verify a previous anomaly based derivation of the AdS_3 central charges of this theory. Also, by dimensional reduction we compare our results with those of the 4D higher derivative attractor, and find complete agreement.
AdS-hydrodynamics has proven to be a useful tool for obtaining transport coefficients observed in the collective flow of strongly coupled fluids like quark gluon plasma (QGP). Particularly, the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density ${η/ s}$ obtained from elliptic flow measurements can be matched with the computation done in the dual gravity theory. The experimentally observed temperature dependence of ${η/ s}$ requires the study of scalar matter coupled AdS gravity including higher derivative curvature corrections. We obtain the backreaction to the metric for such a matter coupled AdS gr…
As was shown earlier, one-loop correction in 10d supergravity on AdS_5 x S^5 corresponds to the contributions to the vacuum energy and boundary 4d conformal anomaly which are minus the values for one n=4 Maxwell supermultiplet, thus reproducing the subleading term in their N^2-1 coefficient in the dual SU(N) SYM theory. We perform similar one-loop computations in 11d supergravity on AdS_7 x S^4 and 10d supergravity on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. In the AdS_7 case we find that the corrections to the 6d conformal anomaly a-coefficient and the vacuum energy are again minus the ones for one (2,0) tensor mu…
We consider certain supersymmetric Born-Infeld couplings to the D3 brane action and show that they give rise to massless and massive KK excitations of type IIB on $AdS_5\times S_5$, in terms of singleton Yang-Mills superfields.
We compute the off-shell spectrum of supergravity on AdS$_2\times S^2$ by explicit diagonalization of the equations of motion for an effective AdS$_2$ theory where all fields are dualized to scalars and spin-${1\over 2}$ fermions. Classifying all bulk modes as physical, gauge violating, and pure gauge let us identify boundary modes as physical fields on $S^2$ that are formally pure gauge but with gauge function that is non-normalizable on AdS$_2$. As an application we compute the leading quantum correction to AdS$_2\times S^2$ as a sum over physical fields including boundary states.
We study the leading $α^\prime$ corrections to the entropy of certain black holes with AdS$_5\times S^5$ asymptotics. We find that, in the supersymmetric limit, the entropy does not receive $α^\prime$ corrections. This result strengthens recent calculations that match the index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills with the corresponding partition function in the supersymmetric limit. In the small temperature regime, we find that the entropy corrections are concordant with the weak gravity conjecture.
It is shown that the AdS_3 gravity action with boundary terms is non invariant under diffeomorphisms and that its Lie derivative has the form of the Weyl anomaly in two dimensions. This variation is compensated by a Weyl transformation of the boundary metric when the radial derivative of the metric on the boundary is expressed in terms of the stress tensor of a Liouville field. The obtained invariance of the action under the combined transformation of a diffeomorphism and a Weyl transformation allows to interpret the computed Lie derivative as minus the Weyl anomaly of the two-dimensional effe…
The general model of higher derivative (HD) gravity is considered. The search of brane-world cosmology in such theory is presented when bulk is d5 AdS and boundary is spherical, hyperbolic or flat (single) brane. It is found the wide range of theory parameters where such cosmology may be realized. Special attention is paid to the version of HD theory representing SG dual of ${\cal N}=2$ $Sp(N)$ SCFT (in next-to-leading order of large $N$ expansion). In particular, it is shown that inflationary brane Universe does not occur for SG dual while hyperbolic brane occurs (which was not possible in le…
Dispersion relations for S-matrices and CFT correlators translate UV consistency into bounds on IR observables. In this note, we construct dispersive sum rules for 1D CFTs. We use them to prove bounds on higher-derivative couplings in weakly-coupled non-gravitational EFTs in AdS$_2$. At the leading order in the bulk-point limit, the bounds agree with the flat-space result. We compute the leading universal effect of finite AdS radius on the bounds. Along the way, we give an explicit formula for anomalous dimensions in general higher-derivative contact Witten diagrams in AdS$_2$.
We investigate the Brown-York stress tensor for curvature-squared theories. This requires a generalized Gibbons-Hawking term in order to establish a well-posed variational principle, which is achieved in a universal way by reducing the number of derivatives through the introduction of an auxiliary tensor field. We examine the boundary stress tensor thus defined for the special case of `massive gravity' in three dimensions, which augments the Einstein-Hilbert term by a particular curvature-squared term. It is shown that one obtains finite results for physical parameters on AdS upon adding a `bo…
We consider $α'$ corrections to the one-loop four-point correlator of the stress-tensor multiplet in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills at order $1/N^4$. Holographically, this is dual to string corrections of the one-loop supergravity amplitude on AdS$_5\times$S$^5$. While this correlator has been considered in Mellin space before, we derive the corresponding position space results, gaining new insights into the analytic structure of AdS loop-amplitudes. Most notably, the presence of a transcendental weight three function involving new singularities is required, which has not appeared in the con…
We apply a physical principle, previously used to eliminate ambiguities in quantum corrections to the 2 dimensional kink, to the case of spinning strings moving in $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$, thought of as another kind of two dimensional soliton. We find that this eliminates the ambiguities and selects the result compatible with AdS/CFT, providing a solid foundation for one of the previous calculations, which found agreement. The method can be applied to other classical string "solitons".
We compute 1-loop correction E_1 to the energy of folded string in AdS_5 x S^5 (carrying spin S in AdS_5 and momentum J in S^5) using ``long string'' approximation in which S >> J >> 1. According to AdS/CFT E_1 should represent the first subleading correction to strong coupling expansion of anomalous dimension of higher twist SL(2) sector operators of the form Tr D^S Z^J. We show that E_1 smoothly interpolates between the ln S regime (previously found in the J=0 case) and the λ/J^2 ln^3 (S/J) regime (which is the leading correction to the thermodynamic limit on the spin chain side). This suppo…
We consider the four-point correlator of the stress-energy tensor multiplet in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. In the planar limit and at large 't Hooft coupling such correlator is given by the corresponding holographic correlation function in IIB supergravity on $AdS_5 \times S^5$. We consider subleading corrections in the number of colours, i.e. order $1/N^4$, at large 't Hooft coupling. This corresponds to loop corrections to the supergravity result. Consistency conditions, most notably crossing symmetry, constrain the form of such corrections and lead to a complete determination of the spectrum of leadi…
We study four-derivative corrections to five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity. We evaluate the on-shell action of the AdS$_5$ black hole solution with two independent angular momenta and one electric charge at linear order in the corrections. After imposing supersymmetry, we are able to recast the action in terms of the supersymmetric chemical potentials and match the result obtained from the dual superconformal index on the second sheet. To achieve this, we exploit the freedom to implement field redefinitions to recast the action in a much simpler form, as well as the fact that the two…
We explore the effect of curvature-square corrections on Lifshitz solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system. After exhibiting the renormalized Lifshitz scaling solution to the system with parameterized R^2 corrections, we turn to a toy model with coupling g(ϕ)C_{μνρσ}^2 and demonstrate that such a term can both stabilize the dilaton and resolve the Lifshitz horizon to AdS_2 x R^2. As an example, we construct numerical flows from AdS_4 in the UV to an intermediate Lifshitz region and then to AdS_2 x R^2 in the deep IR.

Using recent results in four-derivative 5d $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity, we evaluate the regularized on-shell action of the Euclidean solution in this theory that admits a Lorentzian continuation to an AdS$_5$ black hole with one electric charge and two angular momenta. We focus on the supersymmetric limit of this solution and employ holography to show that the result can be expressed purely in terms of angular momentum fugacities and the 't Hooft anomalies for the $\mathrm{U}(1)_{\mathrm R}$ R-symmetry of the dual 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT. This holographic calculation is in perf…
We study 2D Maxwell-dilaton gravity with higher order corrections given by the Chern-Simons term. The model admits three distinctive $AdS_2$ vacuum solutions. By making use of the entropy function formalism we find the entropy of the solutions which is corrected due to the presence of the Chern-Simons term. We observe that the form of the correction depends not only on the coefficient of the Chern-Simons term, but also on the sign of the electric charge; pointing toward the chiral nature of the dual CFT. Using the asymptotic symmetry of the theory as well as requiring a consistent picture we c…
We compute the complete contribution to the stress-energy tensor in the minimal bosonic higher spin theory in D=4 that is quadratic in the scalar field. We find arbitrarily high derivative terms, and that the total sign of the stress-energy tensor depends on the parity of the scalar field.
We study the leading quantum string correction to the dressing phase in the asymptotic Bethe Ansatz system for superstring in AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 supported by RR flux. We find that the phase should be different from the BES phase appearing in the AdS_5 x S^5 case. We use the simplest example of a rigid circular string with two equal spins in S^3 and also consider the general approach based on the algebraic curve description. We also discuss the case of the AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 theory and find the dependence of the 1-loop correction to the effective string tension function h(λ) (expected to en…
A big open problem in $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ holographic duality is to compute the CFT data of the dual theory. In this direction recently it was introduced the hexagonalization framework in the $AdS_3$ context. It allows the computation of the structure constants of the CFT$_2$ dual in the planar limit non-perturbatively, however in this proposal it was introduced only the asymptotic part of the hexagon valid for correlators with asymptotically large bridge lengths. In this work we complete this picture by computing the so called mirror corrections that allow to describe structure cons…
We identify the leading finite-size (Luscher-type) correction to the energy of open strings ending on maximal giant gravitons. In particular we obtain the leading finite size correction at weak 't Hooft coupling and in the planar limit to the energy of very short vacuum states. These results are shown to agree with certain 1, 2, 3 and 4-loop dual gauge theory perturbative calculations, which we also perform.
Motivated by holography, we explore higher derivative corrections to four-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity. We point out that in such a theory the variational problem is generically not well-posed given only a boundary condition for the metric. However, when one evaluates the higher derivative terms perturbatively on a leading order Einstein solution, the equations of motion are always second order and therefore the variational problem indeed requires only a boundary condition for the metric. The equations of motion required to compute the spectrum around the corrected background are s…
We calculate the expectation value of the Wilson line in the pure AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity theory and also the entanglement entropy in the boundary theory. Our one-loop calculation of entanglement entropy shows a shift of the central charge 26. Finally, we show that the Wilson line provides the equivalent description to the boundary entanglement entropy. This equivalence leads to a concrete example of the building of "minimum surface=entanglement entropy".
The zeta function of an arbitrary field in $(d+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime is expressed as an integral transform of the corresponding $so(2,d)$ representation character, thereby extending the results of arXiv:1603.05387 for AdS$_4$ and AdS$_5$ to arbitrary dimensions. The integration in the variables associated with the $so(d)$ part of the character can be recast into a more explicit form using derivatives. The explicit derivative expressions are presented for AdS$_{d+1}$ with $d=2,3,4,5,6$.
We revisit the calculation of one-loop corrections to the partition functions of a string ending on a circular or straight line in type IIB string theory on $AdS_3\times S^3 \times T^4$ supported by a mixture of 3-form fluxes depending on a parameter $q$ (with $q=0$ being R-R and $q=1$ pure NS-NS cases). Correcting earlier results in the literature, we find that the partition function depends on $q$ only through rescaled tension $T= T_0/(1-q^2)$.
We analyze quantum corrections to rigid spinning strings in AdS(5)xS(5). The one-loop worldsheet quantum correction to the string energy is compared to the finite-size correction from the quantum string Bethe ansatz. Expanding the summands of the string theory energy shift in the parameter λ/J^2 and subsequently resumming them yields a divergent result. However, upon zeta-function regularization this result agrees with the Bethe ansatz at the first three orders. We also perform an analogous computation in the limit of large winding number, which results in a disagreement with the string Bethe …
We consider the leading finite-size effects on some structure constants for the $η$ - deformed $AdS_5\times S^5$ background in the framework of the semiclassical approach. The leading finite-size corrections are derived for the cases when we have two heavy string states represented by giant magnons and for two different choices of the light states corresponding to dilaton operator with nonzero momentum and primary scalar operators. Since the dual field theory is still unknown, the results obtained here must be considered as conjectures or as predictions from the string theory side.
In this work the pure spinor formulation of the superstring is used to study quantum corrections to the left current OPE algebra of the coset $PSU(2, 2|4)/SO(4, 1) \times SO(5)$ sigma model, which describes the superstring dynamics in the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background. In particular, the one loop corrections to the simple poles of the bosonic currents are computed. Unlike the case of the double poles, we show that the simple poles suffer corrections, which are important since the simple poles contribute to the four point amplitudes. We show that the only contribution to the simple poles comes …
