We consider the sphere $\Sph^{2n+1}$ equipped with its standard CR structure. In this paper we construct explicit contact forms on $\Sph^{2n+1}\setminus \Sph^{2k+1}$, which are conformal to the standard one and whose related Webster metrics have constant Webster curvature; in particular the curvature is positive if $2k< n-2$. As main applications, we provide two perturbative results. In the first one we prove the existence of infinitely many contact structures on $\Sph^{2n+1}\setminus τ(\Sph^{1})$ conformal to the standard one and having constant Webster curvature, where $τ(\Sph^{1})$ is a small perturbation of $\Sph^1$. In the second application, we show that there exist infinitely many bifurcating branches of periodic solutions to the CR Yamabe problem on $\Sph^{2n+1}\setminus \Sph^{1}$ having constant Webster curvature.
We prove some existence results for the Webster scalar curvature problem on the Heisenberg group and on the unit sphere of ${\mathbb C}^{n+1}$, under the assumption of some natural symmetries of the prescribed curvatures. We use variational and perturbation techniques.
By variational methods, for a kind of Webster scalar curvature problems on the CR sphere with cylindrically symmetric curvature, we construct some multi-peak solutions as the parameter is sufficiently small under certain assumptions. We also obtain the asymptotic behaviors of the solutions.
This paper is devoted to the existence of contact forms of prescribed Webster scalar curvature on a $3-$dimensional CR compact manifold locally conformally CR equivalent to the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ of $\mathbb{C}^{2}$. Due to Kazdan-Warner type obstructions, conditions on the function $H$ to be realized as a Webster scalar curvature have to be given. We prove new existence results based on a new type of Euler-Hopf type formula. Our argument gives an upper bound on the Morse index of the obtained solution. We also give a lower bound on the number of conformal contact forms having the sa…
This is the second of two papers, in which we study the problem of prescribing Webster scalar curvature on the CR sphere as a given function f. Using the Webster scalar curvature flow, we prove an existence result under suitable assumptions on the Morse indices of f.
This is the first of two papers, in which we prove some properties of the Webster scalar curvature flow. More precisely, we establish the long-time existence, L^p convergence and the blow-up analysis for the solution of the flow. As a by-product, we prove the convergence of the CR Yamabe flow on the CR sphere. The results in this paper will be used to prove a result of prescribing Webster scalar curvature on the CR sphere, which is the main result of the second paper.
In this paper, we investigate the problem of prescribing Webster scalar curvatures on compact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. In terms of the method of upper and lower solutions and the perturbation theory of self-adjoint operators, we can describe some sets of Webster scalar curvature functions which can be realized through pointwise CR conformal deformations and CR conformally equivalent deformations respectively from a given pseudo-Hermitian structure.
Using the prescribed Webster scalar curvature flow, we prove some existence results on the 3-dimensional compact CR manifold with nonnegative CR Yamabe constant.
We deform the contact form by the amount of the Tanaka-Webster curvature on a closed spherical $CR$ three-manifold. We show that if a contact form evolves with free torsion and positive Tanaka-Webster curvature as initial data, then a certain Harnack inequality for the Tanaka-Webster curvature holds.
In this paper, we study contact forms on the three- dimensional Heisenberg manifold with its standard CR structure. We discover that the $Q'$-curvature, introduced by Branson, Fontana and Morpurgo [BFM13] on the CR three-sphere and then generalized to any pseudo-Einstein CR three manifold by Case and Yang [CY95], controls the isoperimetric inequality on such a CR-manifold. To show this, we first prove that the nonnegative Webster curvature at infinity deduces that the metric is normal, which is analogous to the behavior on a Riemannian four-manifold.
The orthogonal decomposition of the Webster curvature provides us a way to characterize some canonical metrics on a pseudo-Hermitian manifold. We derive some subelliptic differential inequalities from the Weitzenböck formulas for the traceless pseudo-Hermitian Ricci tensor and the Chern-Moser tensor of Sasakian manifolds with constant pseudo-Hermitian scalar curvature and Sasakian pseudo-Einstein manifolds respectively. By means of either subelliptic estimates or maximum principle, some rigidity theorems are established to characterize Sasakian pseudo-Einstein manifolds among Sasakian manifold…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded strictly pseudoconvex domain in $C^2$ with a smooth, connected and compact boundary M and having a CR structure $J_0$ induced from $C^2$. Assume this CR structure has zero Webster torsion. Then if we deform the CR structure through real-analytic dependence on the deformation parameter and such that each deformed structure along the deformation path is smooth and embeddable in $C^2$, we show that for small deformations of the CR structure $J$ from $J_0$, the associated CR Paneitz operator for $J$ is non-negative. We also show that the Webster curvature for any ellipsoid in …
We develop estimates for the equation of scalar curvature of singular metrics with cone angle $β>1$, in a big and semi-positive cohomology class on a Kähler manifold. We further derive the Laplacian estimate for the scalar curvature equation of degenerate Kähler metrics. We then have several applications of these estimates on the singular constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics, which also include the singular Kähler-Einstein metrics.
We introduce a regularization method for mean curvature flow of a submanifold of arbitrary codimension in the Euclidean space, through higher order equations. We prove that the regularized problems converge to the mean curvature flow for all times before the first singularity.
Measure contraction properties are generalizations of the notion of Ricci curvature lower bounds in Riemannian geometry to more general metric measure spaces. In this paper, we give sufficient conditions for a Sasakian manifold equipped with a natural sub-Riemannian distance to satisfy these properties. Moreover, the sufficient conditions are defined by the Tanaka-Webster curvature. This generalizes the earlier work in \cite{AgLe1} for the three dimensional case and in \cite{Ju} for the Heisenberg group. To obtain our results we use the intrinsic Jacobi equations along sub-Riemannian extremals…
We prove that finite area isolated singularities of surfaces with constant positive curvature in R^3 are removable singularities, branch points or immersed conical singularities. We describe the space of immersed conical singularities of such surfaces in terms of the class of real analytic closed locally convex curves in the 2-sphere with admissible cusp singularities, characterizing when the singularity is actually embedded. In the global setting, we describe the space of peaked spheres in R^3, i.e. compact convex surfaces of constant positive curvature with a finite number of singularities, …
In this note we announce results on the mean curvature flow of mean convex sets in 3-dimensions. Loosely speaking, our results justify the naive picture of mean curvature flow where the only singularities are neck pinches, and components which collapse to asymptotically round spheres.
It is conjectured that the mean curvature blows up at the first singular time of the mean curvature flow in Euclidean space, at least in dimensions less or equal to 7. We show that the mean curvature blows up at the singularities of the mean curvature flow starting from an immersed closed hypersurface with small L^2-norm of the traceless second fundamental form (observe that the initial hypersurface is not necessarily convex). As a consequence of the proof of this result we also obtain the dynamic stability of a sphere along the mean curvature flow with respect to the L^2-norm.
This paper is devoted to the construction of weak solutions to the singular constant $Q$-curvature problem. We build on several tools developed in the last years. This is the first construction of singular metrics on closed manifolds of sufficiently large dimension with constant (positive) $Q$-curvature.
Consider a family of smooth immersions $F(\cdot,t): M^n\to \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ moving by the mean curvature flow $\frac{\partial F(p,t)}{\partial t} = -H(p,t)\cdot ν(p,t)$, for $t\in [0,T)$. We prove that the mean curvature blows up at the first singular time $T$ if all singularities are of type I. In the case $n = 2$, regardless of the type of a possibly forming singularity, we show that at the first singular time the mean curvature necessarily blows up provided that either the Multiplicity One Conjecture holds or the Gaussian density is less than t…
The paper introduces a number of new techniques to handle minimal hyersurface singularities. In particular, they allow to extend the obstruction theory for postive scalr curvature to any dimension.
Employing a notion of curvature for arbitrary closed sets we prove an ABP-type estimate for a class of singular submanifolds of arbitrary codimension and bounded mean curvature recently introduced by B. White. A weak-Harnack-type estimate is then derived using the ABP estimate. These results generalize analogous results by O. Savin for viscosity solutions of the minimal surface equation.
In this note we investigate the behaviour at finite-time singularities of the mean curvature flow of compact Riemannian submanifolds M^m_t\hookrightarrow (N^{m+n}, h). We show that they are characterized by the blow-up of a trace A = H \cdot II of the square of the second fundamental form.
In this paper we derive a refined asymptotic expansion, near an isolated singularity, for conformally flat metrics with constant positive Q-curvature and positive scalar curvature. The condition that the metric has constant Q-curvature forces the conformal factor to satisfy a fourth order nonlinear partial differential equation with critical Sobolev growth, whose leading term is the bilaplacian. We model our results on a similar asymptotic expansion for conformally flat, constant scalar curvature metrics proven by Korevaar, Mazzeo, Pacard, and Schoen. Along the way we analyze the linearization…
In this paper, we study curvature behavior at the first singular time of solution to the Ricci flow on a smooth, compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$, $\frac{\partial}{\partial t}g_{ij} = -2R_{ij}$ for $t\in [0,T)$. If the flow has uniformly bounded scalar curvature and develops Type I singularities at $T$, using Perelman's $\mathcal{W}$-functional, we show that suitable blow-ups of our evolving metrics converge in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov sense to a Gaussian shrinker. If the flow has uniformly bounded scalar curvature and develops Type II singularities at $T$, we show that suitable…
We consider one of the generic regimes of formation of singularities. We obtain a detailed description of a possibly small, but fixed, neighborhood of the blowup point, up to (and including) the blowup time, and find that it is mean convex. This confirms a conjecture by Ilmanen. And we find that the singularity is isolated from the other ones.
For constant mean curvature surfaces of class $C^2$ immersed inside Sasakian sub-Riemannian 3-manifolds we obtain a formula for the second derivative of the area which involves horizontal analytical terms, the Webster scalar curvature of the ambient manifold, and the extrinsic shape of the surface. Then we prove classification results for complete surfaces with empty singular set which are stable, i.e., second order minima of the area under a volume constraint, inside the 3-dimensional sub-Riemannian space forms. In the first Heisenberg group we show that such a surface is a vertical plane. In…
For singular corank 1 surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ we introduce a distinguished normal vector called the axial vector. Using this vector and the curvature parabola we define a new type of curvature called the axial curvature, which generalizes the singular curvature for frontal type singularities. We then study contact properties of the surface with respect to the plane orthogonal to the axial vector and show how they are related to the axial curvature. Finally, for certain fold type singularities, we relate the axial curvature with the Gaussian curvature of an appropriate blow up.
We give an explicit formula for singular surfaces of revolution with prescribed unbounded mean curvature. Using it, we give conditions for singularities of that surfaces. Periodicity of that surface is also discussed.
We investigate behavior of principal curvatures and principal vectors near a non-degenerate singular point of the first kind of frontals. As an application, we extend the notion of Ribaucour transformations to frontals with singular points.
We introduce the concept of singular values for the Riemann curvature tensor, a central mathematical tool in Einstein's theory of general relativity. We study the properties related to the singular values, and investigate five typical cases to show its relationship to the Ricci scalar and other invariants.
By constructing an ODE through a kind of meromorphic 1-forms, we will give an explicit construction of a kind of conformal metrics of constant curvature on Riemann surfaces with singularities. As an application, we will classify constant curvature one metrics on $S^{2}$ with two conical singularities, which was first proved by Troyanov in \cite{Tr89} by using projective connection.
A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence and uniqueness of a conformal metric on 2-sphere of constant curvature 1 and with three conical singularities of prescribed order is given.
We define cuspidal curvature $κ_c$ (resp. normalized cuspidal curvature $μ_c$) along cuspidal edges (resp. at swallowtail singularity) in Riemannian $3$-manifolds, and show that it gives a coefficient of the divergent term of the mean curvature function. Moreover, we show that the product $κ_Π$ called the product curvature (resp. $μ_Π$ called normalized product curvature) of $κ_c$ (resp. $μ_c$) and the limiting normal curvature $κ_ν$ is an intrinsic invariant of the surface, and is closely related to the boundedness of the Gaussian curvature. We also consider the limiting behavior of $κ_Π$ whe…
For singular $n$-manifolds in $\mathbb R^{n+k}$ with a corank 1 singular point at $p\in M^n_{\mbox{sing}}$ we define up to $l(n-1)$ different axial curvatures at $p$, where $l=\min\{n,k+1\}$. These curvatures are obtained using the curvature locus (the image by the second fundamental form of the unitary tangent vectors) and are therefore second order invariants. In fact, in the case $n=2$ they generalise all second order curvatures which have been defined for frontal type surfaces. We relate these curvatures with the principal curvatures in certain normal directions of an associated regular $(…
We extend the concept of singular Ricci flow by Kleiner and Lott from 3d compact manifolds to 3d complete manifolds with possibly unbounded curvature. As an application of the generalized singular Ricci flow, we show that for any 3d complete Riemannian manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature, there exists a smooth Ricci flow starting from it.
Square metrics is an important class of Finsler metrics. Recently, we introduced a special class of non-regular Finsler metrics called singular square metrics. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for singular square metrics to be of constant Ricci or flag curvature when dimension $n\geq3$.
In the 3-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space we prove that the sign of the Gaussian curvature of any timelike minimal surface is determined by the degeneracy and the orientations of the two null curves that generate the surface. Moreover, we also investigate the behavior of the Gaussian curvature near singular points of a timelike minimal surface which admits some kind of singular points.
In Part I of this paper we have seen that any singular compact area minimizer in a positive scalar curvature manifold admits a conformal deformation to some minimal factor geometry that shares many properties with the minimizer, like the Ahlfors regularity, the validity of Poincare inequalities and the presence of tangent cones with positive scalar curvature. In this Part II we show that these geometries admit surgery style arguments eliminating the singular sets.
Given a singular Riemannian foliation on a compact Riemannian manifold, we study the mean curvature flow equation with a regular leaf as initial datum. We prove that if the leaves are compact and the mean curvature vector field is basic, then any finite time singularity is a singular leaf, and the singularity is of type I. These results generalize previous results of Liu and Terng, Pacini and Koike. In particular our results can be applied to partitions of Riemannian manifolds into orbits of actions of compact groups of isometries.
In this paper, we study the singularities of spacelike constant mean curvature one (CMC 1) surfaces in the de Sitter 3-space. We prove the duality between generalized conelike singular points and 5/2-cuspidal edges on spacelike CMC 1 surfaces. To describe the duality between $A_{k+3}$ singularities and cuspidal $S_k$ singularities, we introduce two invariants, called the $α$-invariant and $σ$-invariant, of spacelike CMC 1 surfaces at their singular points. Moreover, we give a classification of non-degenerate singular points on spacelike CMC 1 surfaces.
We consider an axisymmetric closed hypersurface evolving by its mean curvature with driving force under singular initial hypersurface. We study this problem by level set method. We give some criteria to judge whether the interface evolution is fattening or non-fattening.
At each point in an immersed surface in $\mathbb R^4$ there is a curvature ellipse in the normal plane which codifies all the local second order geometry of the surface. More recently, at the singular point of a corank 1 singular surface in $\mathbb R^3$, a curvature parabola in the normal plane which codifies all the local second order geometry has been defined. When projecting a regular surface in $\mathbb R^4$ to $\mathbb R^3$ in a tangent direction corank 1 singularities appear generically. The projection has a cross-cap singularity unless the direction of projection is asymptotic, where m…
Under certain conditions such as the $2$-convexity, a singularity of the level set flow is of type I (in the sense that the rate of curvature blow-up is constrained before and after the singular time) if and only if the flow shrinks to either a round point or a $C^{1}$ curve near that singular point. Analytically speaking, the arrival time is $C^{2}$ near a critical point if and only if it satisfies a Lojasiewicz inequality near the point.

We study the equation for improper (parabolic) affine spheres from the view point of contact geometry and provide the generic classification of singularities appearing in geometric solutions to the equation as well as their duals. We also show the results for surfaces of constant Gaussian curvatureand for developable surfaces. In particular we confirm that generic singularities appearing in such a surface are just cuspidal edges and swallowtails.
Singular Finsler metrics, such as Kropina metrics and $m$-Kropina metrics, have a lot of applications in the real world. In this paper, we classify a class of singular $(α,β)$-metrics which are locally projectively flat with constant flag curvature in dimension $n= 2$ and $n \ge 3$ respectively. Further, we determine the local structure of $m$-Kropina metrics and particularly Kropina metrics which are projectively flat with constant flag curvature and prove that such metrics must be locally Minkowskian but are not necessarily flat-parallel.
We use integrable systems techniques to study the singularities of timelike non-minimal constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space. The singularities arise at the boundary of the Birkhoff big cell of the loop group involved. We examine the behaviour of the surfaces at the big cell boundary, generalize the definition of CMC surfaces to include those with finite, generic singularities, and show how to construct surfaces with prescribed singularities by solving a singular geometric Cauchy problem. The solution shows that the generic singularities of the generalized su…
