The one-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) running behavior of quark and lepton mass matrices with general structures are studied simultaneously. Suppose the non-linear terms of RGEs are dominated by the Yukawa couplings of top quark and τ lepton, the unitary matrices that diagonalize the mass matrices of up-type quark and charged lepton in Hermitian basis are found as invariant with energy scale. Based on this result, we can decouple the RGEs and obtain the RGE corrected mass matrices of fermion. As examples, we consider the renormalization-group evolution of fermion matrices with four or five texture zeros and of lepton mass matrices which realize the tribimaximal mixing.
We discuss all possible fermion field renormalization prescriptions in conventional field renormalization meaning and mainly pay attention to the imaginary part of unstable fermion Field Renormalization Constants (FRC). We find that introducing the off-diagonal fermion FRC leads to the decay widths of physical processes $t\to c Z$ and $b\to s γ$ gauge-parameter dependent. We also discuss the necessity of renormalizing the bare fields in conventional quantum field theory.
In order to obtain proper wave-function renormalization constants for unstable fermion and consist with Breit-Wigner formula in the resonant region, We have assumed an extension of the LSZ reduction formula for unstable fermion and adopted on-shell mass renormalization scheme in the framework of without field renormaization. The comparison of gauge dependence of physical amplitude between on-shell mass renormalization and complex-pole mass renormalization has been discussed. After obtaining the fermion wave-function renormalization constants, we extend them to two matrices in order to include …
We present analytical results at four-loop level for the renormalization constants and anomalous dimensions of an extended QCD model with one coupling constant and an arbitrary number of fermion representations. One example of such a model is the QCD plus gluinos sector of a supersymmetric theory where the gluinos are Majorana fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The renormalization constants of the gauge boson, ghost and fermion fields are analytically computed as well as those for the ghost-gluon vertex, the fermion-gluon vertex and the fermion mass. All other renormali…
We discuss the gauge dependence of fermion mass definition and physical result under the conventional on-shell mass renormalization scheme and the recently proposed pole mass renormalization scheme in standard model. By the two-loop calculations of top quark's mass counterterm and the cross section of physical process $W^{-}W^{+}\to b\bar{b}$ we strictly prove that the on-shell mass renormalization scheme makes fermion mass definition and the physical result gauge dependent at the first time, while we don't find such gauge dependence in the pole mass renormalization scheme. Besides, our calcul…
We report on an explicit on-shell framework to renormalize the fermion-flavour mixing matrices in the Standard Model and its extensions, at one-loop level. It is based on a novel procedure to separate the external-leg mixing corrections into gauge-independent self-mass and gauge-dependent wave-function renormalization contributions.
We obtain explicitly the renormalization group equations for the quark mass matrices in terms of a set of rephasing invariant parameters. For a range of assumed high energy values for the mass ratios and mixing parameters, they are found to evolve rapidly and develop hierarchies as the energy scale decreases. To achieve the experimentally observed high degree of hierarchy, however, the introduction of new models with specific properties becomes necessary.
We show how to renormalize Phi-derivable approximations in a theory with a fermionic field coupled to a self-interacting scalar field through a Yukawa interaction. The nonperturbative renormalization concerns the self-interaction coupling of the scalar field which is renormalized via a set of nested Bethe-Salpeter equations for the scalar and fermionic four-point functions. We use this information to construct explicit finite equations of motion in the symmetric phase. We work in the context of equilibrium quantum field theory and show that the renormalization can be carried out without introd…
A new category of phenomena is predicted in which fermions of different flavours can transmute into one another, for example $e \to μ$ or $e \to τ$, as a consequence of the `rotating' mass matrix due to renormalization. As examples, calculations will be presented for various such processes. Some of these could be accessible to experiments in the near future.
We reconsider the question of wave function renormalization in heavy fermion effective field theories. In particular, we work out a simple and efficient scheme to define the wave function renormalization with respect to the lowest order heavy fermion propagator. The method presented is free of a set of ambiguities which arise in heavy fermion effective field theories. In this context, we discuss the approaches used in the literature so far. We also calculate the fourth order pion mass contribution to the nucleon mass shift and discuss the tree and loop contributions to the electric Sachs form …
We consider favourable extensions of the standard model (SM) where the lepton sector contains Majorana neutrinos with vanishing left-handed mass terms, thus allowing for the see-saw mechanism to operate, and propose physical on-mass-shell (OS) renormalization conditions for the lepton mixing matrices that comply with ultraviolet finiteness, gauge-parameter independence, and (pseudo)unitarity. A crucial feature is that the texture zero in the neutrino mass matrix is preserved by renormalization, which is not automatically the case for possible generalizations of existing renormalization prescri…
The continuous block spin (Wilson) renormalization group equation governing the scale dependence of the action is constructed for theories containing scalars and fermions. A locally approximated form of this equation detailing the structure of a generalized effective potential is numerically analyzed. The role of the irrelevant operators in the nonperturbative renormalization group running is elucidated and a comparison with the 1-loop perturbative results is drawn. Focusing on the spontaneously broken phase of a model possessing a discrete symmetry forbidding an explicit fermion mass term, ma…
We generalize a recently proposed on-shell approach to renormalize the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix to the case of an extended leptonic sector that includes Dirac and Majorana neutrinos in the framework of the seesaw mechanism. An important property of this formulation is the gauge independence of both the renormalized and bare lepton mixing matrices. Also, the texture zero in the neutrino mass matrix is preserved.
In the context of non-supersymmetric SO(10) models, we analyze the renormalization group equations for the fermions (including neutrinos) from the GUT energy scale down to the electroweak energy scale, explicitly taking into account the effects of an intermediate energy scale induced by a Pati--Salam gauge group. To determine the renormalization group running, we use a numerical minimization procedure based on a nested sampling algorithm that randomly generates the values of 19 model parameters at the GUT scale, evolves them, and finally constructs the values of the physical observables and co…
We test the renormalization group procedure for effective particles (RGPEP) on a model of fermion-scalar interaction based on the Yukawa theory. The model is obtained by truncating the Yukawa theory to just two Fock sectors in the Dirac front form of Hamiltonian dynamics, a fermion, and a fermion and a boson, for the purpose of simple analytic calculation that exhibits steps of the procedure.
The method of searching for signals of heavy virtual particles is developed. It is based on a renormalization group equation for the low energy effective Lagrangian and the decoupling theorem. As an application, the model independent search for Abelian Z' boson in four-fermion processes is analyzed. The basic one-loop renormalization group relation for the parameters of the effective Lagrangian is derived which gives possibility to reduce the problem to the scattering of the Standard Model particles in the ``external field'' substituting heavy virtual Z' state. From the set of derived relation…
We discuss renormalization in a toy model with one fermion field and one real scalar field phi, featuring a spontaneously broken discrete symmetry which forbids a fermion mass term and a phi^3 term in the Lagrangian. We employ a renormalization scheme which uses the MSbar scheme for the Yukawa and quartic scalar couplings and renormalizes the vacuum expectation value of phi by requiring that the one-point function of the shifted field is zero. In this scheme, the tadpole contributions to the fermion and scalar selfenergies are canceled by choice of the renormalization parameter delta_v of the …
If the scale dependence of a Yukawa matrix is assumed to be determined entirely by the dominant 33-element, then the renormalization group equations can be expressed in terms of two separate equations: a differential equation for the 33-coupling, and, an algebraic equation for the scale-independent 3x3 matrix that is found to have only two non-trivial, hierarchical, solutions with eigenvalues (0,0,1) and (0,1,1). The mass matrices are constructed from these solutions by rotating them first by the experimentally known mixing matrices-the CKM for quarks and charged leptons, and the CKM-analog fo…
We study the properties of heavy fermions in the vector-like representation of the electro-weak gauge group $SU(2)_W\times U(1)_Y$ with Yukawa couplings to the standard model (SM) Higgs boson. Using the renormalization group analysis, we discuss their effects on the vacuum stability and the triviality bound on the Higgs self-coupling, within the context of the standard model (i.e., the Higgs particle is elementary). Contrary to the low energy case where the decoupling theorem dictates their behavior, the inclusion of heavy fermions drastically change the SM structure at high scale. We also dis…
Several phenomenological features of fermion masses and mixings can be accounted for by a simple model for fermion mass matrices, which suggests an underlying U(2) horizontal symmetry. In this context, it is also proposed how an approximate quark-lepton symmetry can be achieved without unified gauge theories.

Texture specific fermion mass matrices have played an important role in understanding several features of fermion masses and mixings. In the present work, we have given an overview of all possible cases of Fritzsch-like as well as non Fritzsch-like texture 6 and 5 zero fermion mass matrices. Further, for the case of texture 4 zero Fritzsch-like quark mass matrices, the issue of the hierarchy of the elements of the mass matrices and the role of their phases have been discussed. Furthermore, the case of texture 4 zero Fritzsch-like lepton mass matrices has also been discussed with an emphasis on…
The renormalization of the most general dimension-six four-fermion operators without power subtractions is studied at one loop in lattice perturbation theory using overlap fermions. As expected, operators with different chirality do not mix among themselves and parity-conserving and parity-violating multiplets renormalize in the same way. The renormalization constants of unimproved and improved operators are also the same. These mixing factors are necessary to determine physical matrix elements relevant to many phenomenological applications of weak interactions. The most important are the K0-K…
We study dynamical fermion mass generation in (2+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with a gauge field coupling to massless Dirac fermions and non-relativistic scalar bosons. We calculate the fermion velocity renormalization and then examine its influence on dynamical mass generation by using the Dyson-Schwinger equation. It is found that dynamical mass generation takes place even after including the scalar bosons as long as the bosonic compressibility parameter $ξ$ is sufficiently small. In addition, the fermion velocity renormalization enhances the dynamically generated mass.
We study the renormalization of the fermion mixing matrix in the Standard Model and derive the constraints that must be satisfied to respect gauge invariance to all orders. We demonstrate that the prescription based on the {\it on-shell} renormalization conditions is not consistent with the Ward-Takahashi Identities and leads to gauge dependent physical amplitudes. A simple scheme is proposed that satisfies all theoretical requirements and is very convenient for practical calculations.
We study the one-loop renormalization of high-energy Lorentz violating four fermion models. We derive general formulas and then consider a number of specific models. We study the conditions for asymptotic freedom and give a practical method to determine the asymptotic-freedom domain. We also point out that in some models the RG flow contains "rational" Zimmermann trajectories that might hide new symmetries.
The QCD light quark mass renormalized at a 1 GeV scale in the $ \overline{MS} $ scheme is obtained from the numerical results of the lattice QCD simulation with staggered fermions. The primary emphasis is given to the connection between the lattice and continuum parameters. The results are compared with those from the QCD sum rule.
We study the one-loop level renormalization of the electrodynamics of spin 1/2 fermions in the Poincaré projector formalism, in arbitrary covariant gauge and including fermion self-interactions, which are dimension four operators in this framework. We show that the model is renormalizable for arbitrary values of the tree level gyromagnetic factor g within the validity region of the perturbative expansion, αg^2 << 1. In the absence of tree level fermion self-interactions, we recover the pure QED of second order fermions, which is renormalizable only for |g|=2. Turning off the electromagnetic in…
The development of the Exact Renormalization Group for fermionic theories is presented, together with its application to the chiral Gross-Neveu model. We focus on the reliability of various approximations, specifically the derivative expansion and further truncations in the number of fields. The main differences with bosonic theories are discussed.
We perform a non-perturbative study of the scale-dependent renormalization factors of a multiplicatively renormalizable basis of $Δ{B}=2$ parity-odd four-fermion operators in quenched lattice QCD. Heavy quarks are treated in the static approximation with various lattice discretizations of the static action. Light quarks are described by non-perturbatively ${\rm O}(a)$ improved Wilson-type fermions. The renormalization group running is computed for a family of Schroedinger functional (SF) schemes through finite volume techniques in the continuum limit. We compute non-perturbatively the relation…
The exact renormalization group methods is applied to many fermion systems with short-range attractive force. The strength of the attractive fermion-fermion interaction is determined from the vacuum scattering length. A set of approximate flow equations is derived including fermionic and bosonic fluctuations. The numerical solutions show a phase transition to a gapped phase. The inclusion of bosonic fluctuations is found to be significant only in the small-gap regime.

Strongly coupled gauge systems with many fermions are important in many phenomenological models. I use the 2-lattice matching Monte Carlo renormalization group method to study the fixed point structure and critical indexes of SU(3) gauge models with 8 and 12 flavors of fundamental fermions. With an improved renormalization group block transformation I am able to connect the perturbative and confining regimes of the N_f=8 flavor system, thus verifying its QCD-like nature. With N_f=12 flavors the data favor the existence of an infrared fixed point and conformal phase, though the results are also…
The second functional derivative of the effective potential of pure fermionic field theories is rewritten in a factorized form which facilitates the evaluation of the renormalisation flow rate of the effective action in the Wetterich equation. It is applied to the Local Potential Approximation in cases, when the effective potential depends on scalar composites built from the fermions. The procedure is demonstrated explicitly on the example of the $N_f$-flavor Gross-Neveu model and the one-flavor chiral Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model.
Consistency of present-day lattice QCD simulations with dynamical (``sea'') staggered fermions requires that the determinant of the staggered-fermion Dirac operator, $det(D)$, be equal to $det^4(D_{rg}) det(T)$ where $D_{rg}$ is a local one-flavor lattice Dirac operator, and $T$ is a local operator containing only excitations with masses of the order of the cutoff. Using renormalization-group (RG) block transformations I show that, in the limit of infinitely many RG steps, the required decomposition exists for the free staggered operator in the ``flavor representation.'' The resulting one-flav…
We obtain the next-to-next-to-leading-log renormalization group improvement of the spectrum of Hydrogen-like atoms with massless fermions by using potential NRQED. These results can also be applied to the computation of the muonic Hydrogen spectrum where we are able to reproduce some known double logs at O(mα^6). We compare with other formalisms dealing with log resummation available in the literature.
With the introduction of a spectral representation, the Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) for the fermion propagator is formulated in Minkowski space in QED. After imposing the on-shell renormalization conditions, analytic solutions for the fermion propagator spectral functions are obtained in four dimensions with a renormalizable version of the Gauge Technique anzatz for the fermion-photon vertex in the quenched approximation in the Landau gauge. Despite the limitations of this model, having an explicit solution provides a guiding example of the fermion propagator with the correct analytic struc…
We present the first calculation of fermion spectral function at finite temperature in quark-meson model in the framework of the functional renormalization group (FRG). We compare the results in two truncations, after first evolving flow equation of effective potential, we investigate the spectral function either by taking the IR values as input to calculate one-loop self-energy or by taking the scale-dependent values as input to evolve the flow equation of the fermion two-point function. The latter one is a self-consistent procedure in the framework of FRG. In both truncations, we find a mult…
We present first results on the calculation of fermionic spectral functions from analytically continued flow equations within the Functional Renormalization Group approach. Our method is based on the same analytic continuation from imaginary to real frequencies that was developed and used previously for bosonic spectral functions. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the method also for fermionic correlations we apply it here to the real-time quark propagator in the quark-meson model and calculate the corresponding quark spectral functions in the vacuum.
We consider a mixed system of unstable Majorana fermions in a general parity-nonconserving theory and renormalize its propagator matrix to all orders in the pole scheme, in which the squares of the renormalized masses are identified with the complex pole positions and the wave-function renormalization (WFR) matrices are adjusted in compliance with the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formalism. In contrast to the case of unstable Dirac fermions, the WFR matrices of the in and out states are uniquely fixed, while they again bifurcate in the sense that they are no longer related by pseudo-H…
In this work we study the renormalization of the electrodynamics of spin 1/2 fermions in the Poincaré projector formalism which is second order in the derivatives of the fields. We analyze the superficial degree of divergence of the vertex functions of this theory, calculate at one-loop level the vacuum polarization, fermion self-energy and γ-fermion-fermion vertex function and the divergent piece of the one-loop contributions to the γ-γ-fermion-fermion vertex function. It is shown that these functions are renormalizable independently of the value of the gyromagnetic factor g which is a free p…
The results of a preliminary partially quenched (N_f=2) study of the light hadron spectrum, renormalization constants and light quark masses are presented. Numerical simulations are carried out with the LL-SSOR preconditioned Hybrid Monte Carlo with two degenerate dynamical fermions, using the plaquette gauge action and the Wilson quark action at beta = 5.8. Finite volume effects have been investigated employing two lattice volumes: 16^3 x 48 and 24^3 x 48. Configurations have been generated at four values of the sea quark mass corresponding to M_{PS}/M_V ~ 0.6 - 0.8.
We introduce a new parameterization of four-fermion operator matrix elements which does not involve quark masses and thus allows a reduction of systematic uncertainties. In order to simplify the matching between lattice and continuum renormalization schemes, we express our results in terms of renormalization group invariant B-parameters which are renormalization-scheme and scale independent. As an application of our proposal, matrix elements of DI=3/2 and SUSY DS =2 operators have been computed. The calculations have been performed using the tree-level improved Clover lattice action at two dif…
We formulate the thermal renormalization group, an implementation of the Wilsonian RG in the real-time (CTP) formulation of finite temperature field theory, for fermionic fields. Using a model with scalar and fermionic degrees of freedom which should describe the two-flavor chiral phase-transition, we discuss the mechanism behind fermion decoupling and universality at second order transitions. It turns out that an effective mass-like term in the fermion propagator which is due to thermal fluctuations and does not break chiral symmetry is necessary for fermion decoupling to work. This situation…
We propose a method of multi-regulator functional renormalization group (MR-FRG) which is a novel formulation of functional renormalization group with multiple infrared regulators. It is applied to a two-component fermionic system with an attractive contact interaction to study crossover phenomena between the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) phase and the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) phase. To control both the fermionic one-particle excitations and the bosonic collective excitations,IR regulators are introduced, one for the fermionic two-point function and another for the four-fermion verte…
Fermionic functional renormalization group (f-FRG) is applied to describe Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of dimers for a two-component fermionic system with attractive contact interaction. In order to describe the system of dimers without introducing auxiliary bosonic fields (bosonization), we propose a new exact evolution-equation of the effective action in f-FRG with an infrared regulator for the fermion vertex. Then we analyze its basic properties in details. We show explicitly that the critical temperature of the free Bose gas is obtained naturally by this method without bosonization. Me…
We consider a mixed system of Dirac fermions in a general parity-nonconserving theory and renormalize the propagator matrix to all orders in the pole scheme, in which the squares of the renormalized masses are identified with the complex pole positions and the wave-function renormalization (WFR) matrices are adjusted in compliance with the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formalism. We present closed analytic all-order expressions and their expansions through two loops for the renormalization constants in terms of the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and pseudovector parts of the unrenormali…
Fermionic functional renormalization group (FRG) is applied to describe the superfluid phase transition of the two-component fermionic system with attractive contact interaction. Connection between the fermionic FRG approach and the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory with Gorkov and Melik-Barkhudarov (GMB) correction are clarified in details in the weak coupling region by using the renormalization group flow of the fermionic four-point vertex with particle-particle and particle-hole scattering contributions. To go beyond the BCS+GMB theory, coupled FRG flow equations of the fe…
We derive the renormalized equations of motion and the renormalized energy-momentum tensor for fermions coupled to a spatially homogeneous scalar field (inflaton) in a flat FRW geometry. The fermion back reaction to the metric and to the inflaton field is formulated in one-loop approximation. Having determined the infinite counter terms in an $\bar{MS}$ scheme we formulate the finite terms in a form suitable for numerical computation. We comment on the trace anomaly which is inferred from the standard analysis. We also address the problem of initial singularities and determine the Bogoliubov t…
Magnetic catalysis describes the enhancement of symmetry breaking quantum fluctuations in chirally symmetric quantum field theories by the coupling of fermionic degrees of freedom to a magnetic background configuration. We use the functional renormalization group to investigate this phenomenon for interacting Dirac fermions propagating in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime, described by the Gross-Neveu model. We identify pointlike operators up to quartic fermionic terms that can be generated in the renormalization group flow by the presence of an external magnetic field. We employ the beta function f…
Fermionic functional renormalization group (FRG) is applied to describe the superfluid phase transition of the two-component fermionic system with attractive contact interaction. Connection between the fermionic FRG approach and the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory with its Gorkov and Melik-Barkhudarov (GMB) correction is made clear, and the FRG flow of the fermion self-energy is also studied to go beyond the BCS+GMB theory. The superfluid transition temperature and the associated chemical potential are calculated in the region of the negative scattering length using fermionic FRG.
