The second functional derivative of the effective potential of pure fermionic field theories is rewritten in a factorized form which facilitates the evaluation of the renormalisation flow rate of the effective action in the Wetterich equation. It is applied to the Local Potential Approximation in cases, when the effective potential depends on scalar composites built from the fermions. The procedure is demonstrated explicitly on the example of the $N_f$-flavor Gross-Neveu model and the one-flavor chiral Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model.
Inspired by the tachyon-free non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string we consider a special class of non-supersymmetric field theories: Those that can be obtained from supersymmetric field theories by supersymmetry breaking twists. We argue that such theories, like their supersymmetric counter parts, may still possess some fermionic symmetries as left-overs of the super gauge transformations and have special one-loop non-renormalization properties due to holomorphicity. In addition, we extend the supergraph techniques to these theories to calculate some explicit supersymmetry-breaking…
We present first results on the calculation of fermionic spectral functions from analytically continued flow equations within the Functional Renormalization Group approach. Our method is based on the same analytic continuation from imaginary to real frequencies that was developed and used previously for bosonic spectral functions. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the method also for fermionic correlations we apply it here to the real-time quark propagator in the quark-meson model and calculate the corresponding quark spectral functions in the vacuum.
The Polchinski version of the exact renormalization group equation is discussed and its applications in scalar and fermionic theories are reviewed. Relation between this approach and the standard renormalization group is studied, in particular the relation between the derivative expansion and the perturbation theory expansion is worked out in some detail.
Fermionic functional renormalization group (f-FRG) is applied to describe Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of dimers for a two-component fermionic system with attractive contact interaction. In order to describe the system of dimers without introducing auxiliary bosonic fields (bosonization), we propose a new exact evolution-equation of the effective action in f-FRG with an infrared regulator for the fermion vertex. Then we analyze its basic properties in details. We show explicitly that the critical temperature of the free Bose gas is obtained naturally by this method without bosonization. Me…
We discuss Holographic Renormalization Group equations in the presence of fermions and form fields in the bulk. The existence of a holographically dual quantum field theory for a given bulk gravity theory imposes consistency conditions on the ranks of the form fields, the fermion - form field couplings, and leads to a novel Ward identity.
We build the two dimensional Gross-Neveu model by a new method which requires neither cluster expansion nor discretization of phase-space. It simply reorganizes the perturbative series in terms of trees. With this method we can for the first time define non perturbatively the renormalization group differential equations of the model and at the same time construct explicitly their solution.
We present a frame- and reparametrisation-invariant formalism for quantum field theories that include fermionic degrees of freedom. We achieve this using methods of field-space covariance and the Vilkovisky-DeWitt (VDW) effective action. We explicitly construct a field-space supermanifold on which the quantum fields act as coordinates. We show how to define field-space tensors on this supermanifold from the classical action that are covariant under field reparametrisations. We then employ these tensors to equip the field-space supermanifold with a metric, thus solving a long-standing problem c…
The functional equation governing the renormalization flow of fermionic field theories is investigated in $d$ dimensions without introducing auxiliary Bose-fields on the example of the Gross-Neveu and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The UV safe fixed points and the eigenvectors of the renormalization group equations linearized around them are found in the local potential approximation. The results are compared carefully with those obtained with partial bosonisation. The results do not receive any correction in the next-to-leading order approximation of the gradient expansion of the effective ac…
Magnetic catalysis describes the enhancement of symmetry breaking quantum fluctuations in chirally symmetric quantum field theories by the coupling of fermionic degrees of freedom to a magnetic background configuration. We use the functional renormalization group to investigate this phenomenon for interacting Dirac fermions propagating in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime, described by the Gross-Neveu model. We identify pointlike operators up to quartic fermionic terms that can be generated in the renormalization group flow by the presence of an external magnetic field. We employ the beta function f…
The exact renormalization group approach (ERG) is developed for the case of pure fermionic theories by deriving a Grassmann version of the ERG equation and applying it to the study of fixed point solutions and critical exponents of the two-dimensional chiral Gross-Neveu model. An approximation based on the derivative expansion and a further truncation in the number of fields is used. Two solutions are obtained analytically in the limit $N\to \infty $, with N being the number of fermionic species. For finite N some fixed point solutions, with their anomalous dimensions and critical exponents, a…
We give a review of the exact renormalization group (ERG) approach and illustrate its applications in scalar and fermionic theories. The derivative expansion and approximations based on the derivative expansion with further truncation in the number of fields (mixed approximation) are discussed. We analyse the mixed approximation for a three-dimensional scalar theory and show that it is less effective than the pure derivative expansion. For pure fermionic theories analytical solutions for the pure derivative expansion and mixed approximation in the limit $N \to \infty $, where $N$ is the number…
We continue the investigation of the physics implications of a class of flat directions for a prototype quasi-realistic free fermionic string model (CHL5), building upon the results of the previous paper in which the complete mass spectrum and effective trilinear couplings of the observable sector were calculated to all orders in the superpotential. We introduce soft supersymmetry breaking mass parameters into the model, and investigate the gauge symmetry breaking patterns and the renormalization group analysis for two representative flat directions, which leave an additional $U(1)'$ as well a…
We consider a mixed system of Dirac fermions in a general parity-nonconserving theory and renormalize the propagator matrix to all orders in the pole scheme, in which the squares of the renormalized masses are identified with the complex pole positions and the wave-function renormalization (WFR) matrices are adjusted in compliance with the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formalism. We present closed analytic all-order expressions and their expansions through two loops for the renormalization constants in terms of the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and pseudovector parts of the unrenormali…
We renormalize QCD to one loop in coordinate space using constrained differential renormalization, and show explicitly that the Slavnov-Taylor identities are preserved by this method.
We propose a framework for a new type of finite field theories based on a hidden duality between an ultra-violet and an infra-red region. Physical quantities do not receive radiative corrections at a fundamental scale or the fixed point of the duality transformation, and this feature is compatible with models possessing a specific fermionic symmetry. Theories can be tested indirectly by relations among parameters, reflecting underlying symmetries.
We discuss questions related to renormalization group and to nonperturbative aspects of non-Abelian gauge theories with N=2 and/or N=1 supersymmetry. Results on perturbative and nonperturbative $β$ functions of these theories are reviewed, and new mechanisms of confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking recently found in a class of $SU(n_c)$, $USp(2n_c)$ and $SO(n_c)$ theories are discussed.
We carry out the extension of the covariant Ostrogradski method to fermionic field theories. Higher-derivative Lagrangians reduce to second order differential ones with one explicit independent field for each degree of freedom.
We construct fermionic Lagrangians with anisotropic scaling z=2, the natural counterpart of the usual z=2 Lifshitz field theories for scalar fields. We analyze the issue of chiral symmetry, construct the Noether axial currents and discuss the chiral anomaly giving explicit results for two-dimensional case. We also exploit the connection between detailed balance and the dynamics of Lifshitz theories to find different z=2 fermionic Lagrangians and construct their supersymmetric extensions.
This review provides a detailed introduction to chiral gauge theories, renormalization theory, and the application of dimensional regularization with the non-anticommuting BMHV scheme for $γ_5$. One goal is to show how chiral gauge theories can be renormalized despite the spurious breaking of gauge invariance and how to obtain the required symmetry-restoring counterterms. A second goal is to familiarize the reader with the theoretical basis of the renormalization of chiral gauge theories, the theorems that guarantee the existence of renormalized chiral gauge theories at all orders as consisten…
We present a minimal version for the renormalization of softly broken Super-Yang-Mills theories using the extended model with a local gauge coupling. It is shown that the non-renormalization theorems of the case with unbroken supersymmetry are valid without modifications and that the renormalization of soft-breaking parameters is completely governed by the renormalization of the supersymmetric parameters. The symmetry identities in the present context are peculiar, since the extended model contains two anomalies: the Adler-Bardeen anomaly of the axial current and an anomaly of supersymmetry in…
We present a procedure of differential renormalization at the one loop level which avoids introducing unnecessary renormalization constants and automatically preserves abelian gauge invariance. The amplitudes are expressed in terms of a basis of singular functions. The local terms appearing in the renormalization of these functions are determined by requiring consistency with the propagator equation. Previous results in abelian theories, with and without supersymmetry, are discussed in this context.
The one-loop renormalization of a general chiral gauge theory without scalar and Majorana fields is fully worked out within Breitenlohner and Maison dimensional renormalization scheme. The coefficients of the anomalous terms introduced in the Slavnov-Taylor equations by the minimal subtraction algorithm are calculated and the asymmetric counterterms needed to restore the BRS symmetry, if the anomaly cancellation conditions are met, are computed. The renormalization group equation and its coefficients are worked out in the anomaly free case. The computations draw heavily from the existence of a…
We show how to consistently renormalize $\mathcal{N} = 1$ and $\mathcal{N} = 2$ super-Yang-Mills theories in flat space with a local (i.e. space-time-dependent) renormalization scale in a holomorphic scheme. The action gets enhanced by a term proportional to derivatives of the holomorphic coupling. In the $\mathcal{N} = 2$ case, this new action is exact at all orders in perturbation theory.
Considered are superparticle and superstring models invariant under supersymmetry in a target superspace and local extended worldsheet supersymmetry the latter replacing the fermionic $κ$--symmetry of the conventional Green--Schwarz formulations. (Talk given at the Conference on Geometry of Constrained Dynamical Systems, Cambridge, June 15-18, 1994).
We discuss a general procedure to obtain 1/2 BPS partition functions for generic N=1 quiver gauge theories. These functions count the gauge invariant operators (bosonic and fermionic), charged under all the global symmetries (mesonic and baryonic), in the chiral ring of a given quiver gauge theory. In particular we discuss the inclusion of the spinor degrees of freedom in the partition functions.
We briefly review the calculations of quantum corrections related with the exact NSVZ $β$-function in ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theories, paying especial attention to the scheme dependence of the results. It is explained, how the NSVZ relation is obtained for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the bare coupling constant if a theory is regularized by higher derivatives. Also we describe, how to construct a special renormalization prescription which gives the NSVZ relation for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant exactl…
The renormalization of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with soft supersymmetry breaking is presented using spurion fields for introducing the breaking terms. It is proven that renormalization of the fields and parameters in the classical action yields precisely the correct counterterms to cancel all divergences. In the course of the construction of higher orders additional independent parameters appear, but they can be shown to be irrelevant in physics respects. Thus, the only parameters with influence on physical amplitudes are the supersymmetric and the well-known soft breaking parameters…
We prove a generalization of the Verlinde formula to fermionic rational conformal field theories. The fusion coefficients of the fermionic theory are equal to sums of fusion coefficients of its bosonic projection. In particular, fusion coefficients of the fermionic theory connecting two conjugate Ramond fields with the identity are either one or two. Therefore, one is forced to weaken the axioms of fusion algebras for fermionic theories. We show that in the special case of fermionic W(2,d)-algebras these coefficients are given by the dimensions of the irreducible representations of the horizon…
We compute all four-point functions involving the operators $J_0$ and $J_1$ in large-$N$ Chern-Simons fermionic theories, in the regime where all external momenta lie along the $z$-axis. We find that our result for $\langle J_0 J_0 J_0 J_0 \rangle$ agrees with previous computations, and that the other correlators fall in line with expectations from bootstrap arguments.
We consider the renormalisation properties of non-Hermitian Yukawa theories involving a pseudoscalar (axion) field at or near $4$ dimensions. The non-Hermiticity is \cPT-symmetric where $\mathcal P$ is a linear idempotent operator (such as parity) and $\mathcal T$ is an anti-linear idempotent operator (such as time-reversal). The coupling constants of the Yukawa and quartic scalar coupling terms reflect this non-Hermiticity. The path integral representing the field theory is used to discuss the Feynman rules associated with the field theory. The fixed point structure associated with the renorm…
Two dimensional dilaton gravity interacting with a four-fermion model and scalars is investigated, all the coefficients of the Lagrangian being arbitrary functions of the dilaton field. The one-loop covariant effective action for 2D dilaton gravity with Majorana spinors (including the four-fermion interaction) is obtained, and the technical problems which appear in an attempt at generalizing such calculations to the case of the most general four-fermion model described by Dirac fermions are discussed. A solution to these problems is found, based on its reduction to the Majorana spinor case. Th…
We have studied holographic Wilsonian renormalization group (HWRG) of free massless fermionic fields in AdS space and its stochastic quantization(SQ) by identifying the Euclidean action with its boundary on-shell action. The natural extension of the relation between stochastic 2-point correlation function and double trace coupling obtained from HWRG computation conjectured in arXiv:1209.2242 to fermionic fields is established. We have confirmed that the stochastic 2-point function precisely captures the radial flow of the double trace coupling via this relation.
We present a comprehensive analysis of quantum fluctuation effects in the superfluid ground state of an attractively interacting Fermi system, employing the attractive Hubbard model as a prototype. The superfluid order parameter, and fluctuations thereof, are implemented by a bosonic Hubbard-Stratonovich field, which splits into two components corresponding to longitudinal and transverse (Goldstone) fluctuations. Physical properties of the system are computed from a set of approximate flow equations obtained by truncating the exact functional renormalization group flow of the coupled fermion-b…
We study holographic Wilsonian renormalization group flows for bulk spinor fields in AdS. We use this to compute the all-loop beta function for fermionic double trace operators in the dual conformal field theory.
Extending previous work on scalar field theories, we develop a quantum algorithm to compute relativistic scattering amplitudes in fermionic field theories, exemplified by the massive Gross-Neveu model, a theory in two spacetime dimensions with quartic interactions. The algorithm introduces new techniques to meet the additional challenges posed by the characteristics of fermionic fields, and its run time is polynomial in the desired precision and the energy. Thus, it constitutes further progress towards an efficient quantum algorithm for simulating the Standard Model of particle physics.
We define Modular Linear Differential Equations (MLDE) for the level-two congruence subgroups $Γ_\vartheta$, $Γ^0(2)$ and $Γ_0(2)$ of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$. Each subgroup corresponds to one of the spin structures on the torus. The pole structures of the fermionic MLDEs are investigated by exploiting the valence formula for the level-two congruence subgroups. We focus on the first and second order holomorphic MLDEs without poles and use them to find a large class of `Fermionic Rational Conformal Field Theories', which have non-negative integer coefficients in the $q$-series expansion of thei…
In this paper, we analyze the fermionic Casimir effects associated with a massless quantum field in the context of Lorentz symmetry violation approach based on Horava-Lifshitz methodology. In order to obtain these observables, we impose the standard MIT bag boundary condition on the fields on two large and parallel plates. Our main objectives are to investigate how the Casimir energy and pressure depend on the parameter associated with the breaking of Lorentz symmetry.
The development of the Exact Renormalization Group for fermionic theories is presented, together with its application to the chiral Gross-Neveu model. We focus on the reliability of various approximations, specifically the derivative expansion and further truncations in the number of fields. The main differences with bosonic theories are discussed.
We comment on a recent puzzle regarding renormalization group invariance of exact results in SUSY theories, and argue that a purported renormalization of the dynamical scale Λdoes not in fact occur.
It is possible to describe fermionic phases of matter and spin-topological field theories in 2+1d in terms of bosonic "shadow" theories, which are obtained from the original theory by "gauging fermionic parity". The fermionic/spin theories are recovered from their shadow by a process of fermionic anyon condensation: gauging a one-form symmetry generated by quasi-particles with fermionic statistics. We apply the formalism to theories which admit gapped boundary conditions. We obtain Turaev-Viro-like and Levin-Wen-like constructions of fermionic phases of matter. We describe the group structure …
Manifestly invariant renormalization scheme for supersymmetric gauge theories is proposed. This scheme is applied to supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics.
General fermionic expressions for the branching functions of the rational coset conformal field theories $\widehat{su}(2)_{M}\times \widehat{su}(2)_N/\widehat{su}(2)_{M+N}$ are given. The equality of the bosonic and fermionic representations for the branching functions is proven by introducing polynomial truncations of these branching functions which are the configuration sums of the RSOS models in regime III. The path space interpretation of the RSOS models provides recursion relations for the configuration sums. The proof of the recursion relations for the fermionic expressions is given by u…
We present fermionic quasi-particle sum representations consisting of a single fundamental fermionic form for all characters of the logarithmic conformal field theory models with central charge c(p,1), p>=2, and suggest a physical interpretation. We also show that it is possible to correctly extract dilogarithm identities.

We discuss non-renormalization theorems applying to galileon field theories and their generalizations. Galileon theories are similar in many respects to other derivatively coupled effective field theories, including general relativity and $P(X)$ theories. In particular, these other theories also enjoy versions of non-renormalization theorems that protect certain operators against corrections from self-loops. However, we argue that the galileons are distinguished by the fact that they are not renormalized even by loops of other heavy fields whose couplings respect the galileon symmetry.
We study the addition of quantum fermionic impurities to the N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theories in 2+1 spacetime dimensions. The impurities are introduced by means of Wilson loops in the antisymmetric representation of the gauge group. In a holographic setup, the system is represented by considering D6-branes probing the AdS_4 x CP^3 background of type IIA supergravity. We study the thermodynamic properties of the system and show how a Kondo lattice model with holographic dimers can be constructed. By computing the Kaluza-Klein fluctuation modes of the probe brane we determine the…
Recent results on solutions to the equation of motion of the cubic fermionic string field theory and an equivalence of non-polynomial and cubic string field theories are discussed. To have a possibility to deal with both GSO(+) and GSO(-) sectors in the uniform way a matrix formulation for the NS fermionic SFT is used. In constructions of analytical solutions to open string field theories truncated pure gauge configurations parameterized by wedge states play an essential role. The matrix form of this parametrization for the NS fermionic SFT is presented. Using the cubic open superstring field …
We consider the scaling behavior of circuit complexity under quantum quench in an a relativistic fermion field theory on a one dimensional spatial lattice. This is done by finding an exactly solvable quench protocol which asymptotes to massive phases at early and late times and crosses a critical point in between. We find a variety of scaling behavior as a function of the quench rate, starting with a saturation for quenches at the lattice scale, a "fast quench scaling" at intermediate rate and a Kibble Zurek scaling at slow rates.
We construct for the first time Drukker-Trancanelli (DT) type fermionic Bogomolnyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Wilson loops in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ quiver theory and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. The connections of these fermionic BPS Wilson loops have a supermatrix structure. We construct timelike BPS Wilson lines in Minkowski spacetime and circular BPS Wilson loops in Euclidean space. These Wilson loops involve dimensionful parameters. For generic values of parameters, they preserve one real (complex) supercharge in Lorentzian (Euclidean…
